Interview Invites

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
As for the VAs, I think a lot of them send invites already or at least to my friend. I don't know personally since didn't apply to VA.

Ours has not sent out any interview invites yet. Probably will at some point before feb 1st.

I should clarify I got an interview from Henry Ford. I did not apply to TGH.

Neither of them had publications. Hope you hear back from them really soon! And with good news 😉.

IU Health sent out invites already

Looks like I can mark two more off my list without even checking my inbox 😛 Oh, here's hoping the ace up my sleeve works out before the day's end :meanie:

We don't look at publications in our screening criteria. What people list as a "publication" is all across the board. But again this may be more important for a large academic center where publication is expected during residency.

I'm still hoping to hear from Henry Ford :xf:, may be they are offering interviews as they review the applications...... Trying to stay positive lol

What is considered a good amount of publications to be competitive? And do the publications have to be "clinical"?

In the PhD world it's publish or perish with as many first authorships as possible. For residency, does first author matter that much or is it sufficient to just have a publication regardless of where you are in the list? Just wondering what gets you into the "interview" pile if you already have the >3.5 GPA, work experience, and leadership.

Curious how many of you with interviews had more than one publication....

I think the key is trying to distinguish yourself, so even a single publication will help to do that. First author would be a huge plus, as people tend to pad authorship quite a bit these days.

Also, publish or perish is a common saying for PhDs, but I'd suggest a more accurate description would be funding or perish! It all comes down to $$$.

Anyone heard from VAs in FL like Miami, Gainesville, Lake City, or Pensacola? Or any hospitals in ATL or Jax,Fl?
I got rejected from Tampa VA.

I heard back from Gainesville and Lake City VA, and only one out of four ATL hospitals got back to me so far.

Oh I already did, I was probably in the same "rejection" batch that your friends were in. I think my only weakness is no real publication other than an abstract. Which I think is the reason why I got rejected at TGH.

I think all of mine are in except for florida ones, for some reason florida program are taking more time that I thought they would. A lot of out of state programs are asking for like late to mid january invites, definitely not florida is shooting for.

Aaw, I am sorry to hear. 🙁

I hope you get the residency for you! It's difficult to say what each institution is looking for, because each program has different criteria for what type of residents they desire to represent them.

Some Florida programs are aiming for the early Jan to mid Feb deadline, other not so much. If you want, you can PM me, I would be happy to relay to you which programs have been sending out invites in Florida (per my classmates and friends). If not, I completely understand. It's a stressful process, but I think we will all gain so much from this process.

Best of luck to everyone!

Applied to 7 programs (6 were VA's)
2 interview invites
2 rejections
3 unknowns

I'm wondering the same thing. I'm really surprised I even got interviews because although I have research experience both in undergrad and pharmacy school, I have nothing to show for it in terms of publishing a paper. But I guess that explains why I got rejected from now 2 University of "X" programs.

If I do match, I'll make an Average Joe's and Jane's thread (haven't checked if there's already one) 🙂
"Do you like drugs" will be my theme => http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-OFOP_BP8vM

and it's late and I'm ranting and being slow as h*ll trying to prepare a presentation 🙁

Having publications is always a plus but not as detrimental in applying to residencies as it is for PhDs. I'm sure there are some programs that weigh publications very heavily, but I think the overall idea is to be as well rounded as possible. A friend of mine had no publications or research and applied to ~7 programs (all big name academic programs) and got interviews with 2 highly sought after residency programs as well as some others. Ultimately, he showed himself to be a very well rounded individual and was able to convey motivation, dedication, and willingness to learn on his application. Conversely, he received a rejection from another highly sought after program. On the other hand, I have 2 publication, applied to 7 programs and received interviews and rejections from some highly sought after programs. There are so many qualities programs look for in an applicant and it may vary from place to place. I guess the point I'm trying to make is that not having a publication is not a "Death Sentence" per se for the residency applicant who wishes to apply for more prestigious programs. It looks great, but it will not always make or break an application.

Maybe someone who has a residency can provide more insight, but remember this is 1 program director/faculty/resident's perspective and cannot be applied to every institution, prestigious or not.

Wishing you the best of luck. I know we will all be able to breathe a bit easier when March comes and goes and we have a better idea of what we will be doing.

May the force be with everyone!🙂

👍I think you nailed it in that its a multitude of things that programs look for and it differ per program. Good luck everyone.

I am now up to 3 interview invites and 3 rejections. Still waiting to hear from 3 programs. Out of curiousity, how is everyone else handling the issue of asking preceptors for days off and making up time to allow for interviews? Any advice/tips would be appreciated! Scheduling is starting to get tricky....there is the potential I may have to miss the first day of my next rotation due to an interview and the prospect of this does not feel quite right but I may not have a choice...

I had contacted my preceptor before hand and she had told me to do whatever was necessary. She's giving me a few extra projects to "make up" the time. I'm doing 7 interviews and I took January and March dates where available as to not try to miss too much time.

Seeing as today is MLK day and its a holiday, anyone hearing anything back? I am kinda tired of getting my hopes up every time I get a new email lol. Still at 2 invites and 8 unknown, getting worried.

I've had the fortunate experience of having my ambulatory care rotation as my last rotation during the Jan and Feb months. My preceptor has been very accommodating. Whenever I got an interview, I would speak to her and she would just tell me if I needed to make that day up or not. Additionally, I emailed her back in December to give her fair warning.

I would contact your preceptor now to give them fair warning. I would also assure them that you intend to work as hard as possible and willing to make up any work you would be missing as a result. Also putting in blurb of why this is important to you may be helpful as well. If your preceptor is in a hospital setting, and their hospital offers pharmacy residencies, he/she may be understanding because they may be part of the interview process themselves. I think the biggest action to take would be to inform them as early as possible so that they can prepare for your absence. I can't guarantee that every preceptor will be understanding, but the more sensible ones will. In that case, you really have to weigh which is more important.

On that note, I hope your preceptor is understanding 🙂.

Friend of mine heard back from two this morning and two other people heard back from other places...so definitely not a holiday for a lot of programs!

A friend of mine received 4 invites today alone (All Florida programs). I'm not sure if they just decided to sleep until today or what, but I guess some programs are meeting and sending out invites today.

Right there with you! I check my email every 5 minutes. I heard from 5/11 residencies. 2/7 programs I'm still waiting to hear from sent me an email to confirm that they received my application and that they will get back to me as soon as they review all the applications.

I have to say that scheduling interviews is a bit of a challenge for me. I'm working on switching shifts with other interns and still looking for people to cover for me. Our work schedule comes out a month ahead so it's hard to plan. I would have told my manager to not schedule me at all for February, but I have an out of town rotation in March, and won't be working that month so I didn't want to push it.

I got a call on Friday for an interview. I'm hoping they send out a confirmation today or tomorrow. It feels like it didn't really happen until I get that confirmation, plus the interview is in a couple of weeks. 😀

Has anyone heard from Prebytarian hospital, charlotte NC and texas methodist health yet? Checking emails every 5mins, no interview yet!😕

I heard back from Gainesville and Lake City VA, and only one out of four ATL hospitals got back to me so far.
They must have rejected me I applied to both Gainesville and Lake City VA. I figured I'd be a long shot...I also got 1 rejection and 1 invitation from Jax hospitals.

I have:
3 interviews
3 rejections
Im highly anticipating way more rejections than interview invites. I'm just glad I applied to a lot of programs. I'm trying to stay positive though and plan on knocking out my interviews 🙂.

Where in Florida were the invites from?

Heart skipped a beat today when i got a call from a strange area code. It was a telemarketer😡

Happened to me twice! Once, it was the cable company asking me if I wanted to get cable and phone service. The second time, it was this hospital asking for me to pay a bill (that I only got a few days ago). The hospital is one of the places I applied, so when they asked for me, I got excited.

Well I at least got my first rejection today, so I heard something...

I Heard back from 2 programs this afternoon. I think some places took the long weekend to get caught up on reviewing applications.

Stats so far:
3 invites
1 rejection
4 waiting to hear back from

My friend got an interview from Texas Methodist early last week....

Got rejected from Uni of KY today! So yea, some programs are working on apps today. Good luck everyone!

Mayo JAX? Confirmation of application, response 1/23

I remember now why I used to be on this forum a lot, then fell away...you guys worry too much!!! You're making my blood pressure rise reading these comments and I was not even that worried.

Now i feel like the world is collapsing, everyone's getting a residency but me, and the interviews are going to include fire breathing monsters who ask us clinical questions and criticize our presentations!!! aahhhhh

I completely agree...yet i can't look away! 🙂

Hey! I applied to Presbyterian Charlotte and haven't heard anything from them either...they said they will contact the week of January 14th. I wonder if I should follow up!

I've heard back from San Francisco General Hospital, Cedars Sinai, and UC Davis

Has anyone got an offer for interviews on days you absolutely can't make it? I just got an offer from University of New Mexico for an interview, but the dates they offered I already have interviews scheduled. I just emailed explaining my situation, but not asking for an accommodation (I let them know I didnt want to inconvenience them too much) . My preceptor (who is a UNM residency graduate) said he thinks they will offer another date if they really want you.. so we shall see.

Oh and my stats so far:
12 programs applied to
3 No's
4 interview invites (UCSF, SF General, Scripps Mercy, and University of NM).
awaiting 5

So far...
11 applications
6 interviews
0 rejections
5 no responses

Can we assume at this point if the application was due the first week of January that you were rejected? Most places contacted me soon after their deadline. Is it okay to send a follow up email to check your application status?

No and no. The vast majority of programs reach out to candidates letting them know either way. Last year I received an interview offer the beginning of February. The application deadline was 1/1.

Congrats! The same thing happened to me. I let the program know I was unavailable due to a scheduling conflict and they offered me another date the following day. Luckily it was on an open day.

My friend got an invite from Mayo 10 days ago, but I think he submitted his app at least a few days early

I'm fairly certain Mayo is done sending out invites.

My current stats:

9 applications
8 interviews
0 rejections

Just got an invite today and the site said they had been delayed because of PhORCAS. So I think there is still hope for people who haven't heard anything yet from sites!
