iowa c/o 2015 applicants!

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Dunno about the cumulative, since I only attended one school anyway. However, for the science GPA, they ONLY count your chemistries, the one semester of physics, your genetics, and two 'biological' courses that they choose. I think they're upper division. It's pretty painful unless you've nailed all your chem courses.

Hmm, okay, good to know. But frustrating that chem counts so much more than bio! Do you know if they choose bio classes you did well in or just whichever they feel like?

Umm... I think they pick ones you did okay in, but they have to be upper division so no bio 101 or anything. But I'm not sure.

I do know that they don't count animal genetics because those tend to be "livestock breeding" more than general genetics. However, my school has a separate class for livestock breeding (well, several classes) and my animal genetics was very much a normal genetics class, so I submitted a syllabus and am waiting to hear back about that.

Science GPA is calculated using the prerequisite science courses... so gen chem, organic, biochem, physics, gen bio, genetics, and mammalian anatomy/physiology. If you've got more than one course that fulfills the requirement then the one with the highest grade will be used. Does that make sense?

And again, don't worry if stuff isn't in/calculated; the admissions cycle has a ways to go yet. But if you've got questions/concerns about the status of your application -- call or email! It won't hurt.

i wonder why they stillll haven't calculated my GPA?? it says they have not received my GRE either, which i sent almost 2 months ago 😕 am i the only one?

I sent my stuff about 2 months ago too... it shows my GRE as received, but scores not entered yet. They also show having all my transcripts (no small feat when you consider how many there are), but none of the GPAs are calculated yet. Does it not at least say your GRE was received? Do you have the receipt/score report from ETS showing that the score was sent? I'm not too worried at the moment that none of my stuff is entered... figure they are busy getting ready for IS and contract state interviews right now.

I just sent them an email asking about the cumulative GPA, so I will post what they say.

I'm definitely interested to see what they say about the cumulative GPA. I'm assuming they only used the primary school because my calculated cumulative is way higher than if they used all my schools -- very unexpected but good.

Have any of you had problems logging into their supplemental website? I can't seem to log in. I've tried every password I can think of (apparently I didn't write it down anywhere?) but none of the work. I've tried the "forgot password" link to have instructions emailed to me, but nothing ever arrives (I've done this way too many times at this point).

Does anyone know of another contact number to use? email? etc.

Thanks.

Have you tried emailing/calling Brenda? At the very least she can probably direct you to the right person.

LunaCaelum,
The same thing happened to me awhile back and the forgotten password link never worked, so I just called Brenda and she changed my password right over the phone with me. Hope they can help you! 🙂

So they do use your GPAs from every school attended, but I think they incorrectly calculated one of my GPAs. Also, they use your grade from physics I, not physics II, even if your physics II grade was higher 🙁

I also believe that they calculated my cumulative GPA incorrectly. It is significantly lower than the GPA on my transcripts.

With mine, I took some classes at a local community college, with one of them being a pass/fail class. When they went to calculate my cumulative GPA, they included the pass/fail hours too, making my GPA lower than what it should be.

That is actually exactly what happened to me as well. I haven't talked to them about it yet though. Have you? I took about 5 credits of Pass/Fail classes and I think they counted them as well.

I sent them an email last night about it, and am waiting to hear back from them, though I'm sure it probably won't be until Monday.

Let me know what the outcome is, I also had that... hence what may have happened... I don't think it will affect my gpa that much though.

Kathy Kuehl had just responded to me and said she recalculated my gpas, she said they were correct.. looks like there is no chance I'm getting in. Good luck to everyone!

Don't be so pessimistic! Does Iowa have a hard GPA cut-off that I am unaware of? Hope not!

Still waiting for my GPAs and GREs to get entered...:scared:

I received an email back this morning from Kathy saying that she had inadvertently included the hours from my pass/fail class, and she adjusted my GPA accordingly. She said that this is why they post the GPAs and since they calculate so many, they may make a few mistakes.

No GPA cutoff (my grades really aren't that good.. actually they are horrible)... I actually was pretty persistent (3 or 4 e-mails).. and we did find a discrepancy in one of the calculations, my science GPA was incorrect, so now that is correct. And I asked her about the pass/fail and she said she didn't end up doing that, she recalculated it today.. 🙁 Even though NCSU calculated it a bit different.

What minimum cumulative undergraduate grade point is required?

A minimum cumulative undergraduate GPA of 2.50 is required to apply. In calculating this GPA ALL undergraduate courses taken for a grade are used. Repeated courses are averaged. The second grade achieved in a repeated course DOES NOT replace the first grade. Although 2.50 is the minimum GPA, to be competitive a resident/contract applicant should have a cumulative undergraduate GPA of 3.00 and non-resident/non-contract applicants should have a cumulative undergraduate GPA of 3.20.

But they used to have a thing up showing the complete range of GPAs from accepted students, and they did go down pretty low. But I can't find it now. Anyway, that made me feel a bit better, seeing the ranges, but like Raimes, I probably won't be holding my breath any time soon.

Ahhh... ok! I started to worry that they had something like that 3.7 unofficial cut-off like MO apparently had last year.

I'm glad they are willing to re-calculate if you think there is an error... not that I will have any clue if there is an error in mine! I will probably just have to go with whatever they say!

Kathy Kuehl is probably going to hate me! I went and made an excel sheet for my cGPA, again.. off..

I apologized profusely in my e-mail! 🙁

Maybe she might understand that I am a psychotic veterinary wanna-be?

From the packet I got at some point before being admitted: GPA ranges for fall 2008 admits were 2.79-4.00 (cumulative), 2.67-4.00 (last 45), and 2.26-4.00 (science). I don't have the information for my class or for the 2014'ers, though.

I'm not sure exactly how helpful this will be, but it at least shows averages and the general breakdown of the admissions procedure (and they advertise SDN at the end 😉): http://vetmed.iastate.edu/academics/prospective-students/admissions/unsuccessful-app-reviews

Also: I think this thread needs some happy thoughts... so here is one and here's a baby elephant sneezing 🙂

Hah! I did the same thing, sent her an excel spreadsheet last night. She had replied with a copy of their spreadsheet by the time I woke up!

This entire comment makes me feel better. Even if my GPAs aren't entered yet. The baby elephant is too ridiculously cute.

hey everyone, just an update: the interviews are SUPER non-stressful, at least once you're in the room! I was extremely nervous beforehand but the moderators were really nice and laid back; they started cracking jokes right away because they could tell I was stressed.

The process is pretty easy, they take your picture, give you a tour, fit you for your white coat, have some discussions you can sit in (finances, student panel, clubs, etc), then its interview time. The questions are exactly what you would expect for a 'behavioral' interview. For example, one of mine was, "talk about a time you had to make a difficult decision and explain the process you used to arrive at that decision". They expect you to take time and think about each decision and it's really just like a conversation between the four of you.

Hope this helps! And for those of you still waiting to hear, have faith!

... fit you for your white coat ....

Agreed. I'm surprised they do this before you are accepted. What does a rejection letter say? "For your privacy, we are deleting your coat measurements from our system as you will not be receiving one. Warm Regards."?

Glad to hear everything went well, cubby38!

And for the rest of you applicants: If you get an interview (think positive!), I strongly, strongly recommend scoping out all of the activities. Go check out the club posters, the tablet demos, the student panel -- all of it! We all volunteer to do these things and work hard to showcase our school, to give you an idea of what the curriculum and student life are like here (so you can make an informed decision as to whether ISU is a good fit), and to make your interview day as stress-free as possible.

And ask questions! Heck, ask everyone the same types of questions so you can get multiple perspectives. IMO the best tours/panels/conversations I've given/been on/had at interviews (last year's set and the ones last week) are where I'm answering questions rather than rambling on about whatever relevant information happens to cross my mind.

Agreed. I'm surprised they do this before you are accepted.

It's so they can order your white coat and have it ready for you at the White Coat Ceremony in August (they're nice and pretty and embroidered and stuff). Otherwise, people wouldn't get measured until orientation -- i.e 1-3 days before the WCC.

Seriously? That sounds like extra pressure! Eep.

It does... but on the bright side everyone has to do it?

I'm confused. Where is everyone finding their GPAs posted? All my page shows is my supplemental app and a "you have already finalized your supplemental app" statement highlighted at the top.

Am I missing something?/not finding something?

Thanks.

I just kept scrolling down and all of my GRE/GPA, etc. information is down further on the page.

Try clicking on the "home" link on the left hand side of the page, and then scroll down.

In related news, my GRE and GPAs got entered today! I basically agree with their cumulative and science GPAs, but I thought my last 45 was much (OK, like .2) higher. Oh well! Not sure what they included.

Anyway, I am hoping that OOS invites go out in a few weeks!:xf::xf:

My GPAs finally got posted, pretty much exactly what I expected them to be. Even though I knew what they would be, it's still a little exciting to see them up (all "official" and such, haha).

Almost there, hang in guys! 🙂

I opened my email during lunch today and started jumping up and down, I'm not sure if I screamed or not. After no interviews last year, I am so ridiculously excited to get my first interview invite! Was going to visit my family that weekend but sorry, Iowa wins, time to switch my flight. Though it's a bit frustrating because we won't know the exact day or time of the interview until Nov 25 (it's between 2 days, am or pm on each), but I really need to book my flight now because it will get even more crazy expensive as it gets closer. I requested to have mine on the Sunday because I have work Saturday, maybe I'll take a half day.. but agh, it's hard to know when to fly. Sorry, rambling, I'm still too giddy.
But my main point - a few questions for current Iowa people. I'll fly into Des Moines Airport - what's the best way to get to campus/navigate for the next day from there? Where is good to stay? Will it be freezing cold in December where I'll need wool socks and a huge winter coat? (I'm a Californian, so anything will seem quite cold). Do I need to worry about my flight being canceled because of storms? Do they give us more info prior to the interview on how the day of will go? Should I bring clothes to change between interview and info sessions, or do people just stay in interview attire all day? Sry, this is my first interview so I'm really unsure what to expect and how to get all the logistics together in terms of getting there and being there. Thank you!

Congrats, thedogisgreen! I was wondering if any SDN'ers got invites for this round 🙂

IIRC people usually rent a car, but I'm in-state and may not be the best person to answer this.

You should be getting a list of hotels and the like tomorrow or early next week (pretty sure they'll still be in the office!). I stayed at the Days Inn on Duff when I interviewed, and most places in Ames should be just fine.

I would definitely plan to have a good coat (not necessarily a huge one, just one that will keep you warm enough from the parking lot to the school or hotel or wherever), as well as a hat and gloves (in case you need them). It's been in the 40's this week and it's projected to be in the 30's next week, and it could stay there for a bit or drop again... so my answer for now is maybe.

It snowed briefly last night but that's the only hint we've had of it so far (knock on wood that it stays that way for a while!), so I wouldn't worry too much about flight cancellations yet.

Do they give us more info prior to the interview on how the day of will go? Should I bring clothes to change between interview and info sessions, or do people just stay in interview attire all day?
You'll be getting an itinerary once your interview time is set. Lots of stuff is planned for you guys! As far as changing, everyone just stays in interview attire. Just wear comfy shoes or have some to change into (at least for the hour-long tour).

I hope that helps!

When I went to Ames last year, the snow drifts in late February were literally over my head. 😱

edit: the place had a certain charm, though I didn't look at the vet school because I was there to interview for a Ph.D. program/fellowship. In fact I wore my ISU hoodie today!! 🙂

Anyone still not have GRE or GPA scores uploaded? I'm not super worried since they're all marked as received, just wondering 😕

I still don't have my GRE/GPA scores uploaded, and mine were marked as received 8/26.

Mine say received and have yet to be uploaded as well, I was nervous about this but it's nice to see that others are in the same boat as myself. I dont really want to send them an email as it would seem rude and I'm sure they are very busy. I am very tired of checking that supp app page everyday to see if they are entered though.😕

I think it's fine to email them about it, I just emailed Brenda about something else and she answered back the next morning and was really nice about it, definitely took away my stress.

I emailed Brenda a couple of weeks ago about changing my email address and got no response, so I'm assuming they're busy. I'm not going to freak out just yet (since they're marked as received), just getting fidgety 🙄

Congrats thedogisgreen!!! That's so wonderful 😀

Does anyone know when the next round of interview invites are? I'm starting to get a little anxious.... ah I hate waiting!

If they're marked as received then you should be fine. So... wait a few days, or a week, then check again. It'll get in there eventually.

Does anyone know when the next round of interview invites are? I'm starting to get a little anxious.... ah I hate waiting!

The next round of interviews isn't until January 8-9, so mid to late December.

This whole waiting game is starting to drive me crazy! But I applied as OOS and it's already getting nerve-wrecking when people are receiving invites from other schools.

I'm thinking they will probably send out the next round of invites right before Christmas, they sent the other two rounds about two and a half weeks before the weekend of the interview. They'll let you rank your choices between the two weekend days and times, and then email you a confirmation of which you get a week later (though as an OOS, I asked and found out earlier, still haven't gotten anything official and it's in just over a week, so ask when it comes to that!)

I applied OOS and haven't gotten an interview invitation yet... crossing my fingers that I'll get one for one of the later dates! I have a few friends who rave about the vet school!
