So I am a resident in my last year of residency in Emergency Medicine. My wife is also a resident in her last year of residency (But she is in a pediatrics residency). We have one kid in preschool, and we would love for my wife to be available to be with our child most of the day.

We have a combined 16 years of student debt (college and medical school for both of us), and we didn't earn enough during residency to pay off much of our debt. I am going to try to work about 45 hours a week, and my wife is going to join a pediatrics group, working 10-2 with no call, every Monday-Friday to earn some extra money to pay off our debts.

We both have great education and residencies, and could easily get jobs, but it is increasingly difficult to find a place with a job for me and this job for her. We would move anywhere in the country, except for big cities like NYC or LA. We also would not go to anywhere in Florida. Does anybody have any tips for us to find these jobs? Do we cold call? Do I use one of those national groups (EMCare type) and cold call at local practices to my job? Help!

Why no love for Florida, if I may ask ?

We have several reasons, for this, but mainly:
1. Too hot climate
2. Malpractice
3. Not enough trees, there is no greenery
4. Don't like Heat, the Marlins, or the Dolphins.
5. Just don't like the state. We have had some bad experiences there.

You could reach out to any of the big corp. groups and see what they have available. Once you narrow it down to a half dozen or so places you could then cold call the area for peds jobs. You could also ask if the head hunter can work on the peds job as well.

Not enough trees in Florida? WHAT?

On another note if you want to pay down debt no state income tax is quite nice.

Otherwise, it would seem a job wokring 4 hours a day is gonna be tough.Outside of a few places EM jobs within a 30 minute commute are out there.

Texas.

Debts will vanish. Lots of areas qualify for federal loan repayment programs.

PM Dr.McNinja - he does EM and his wife does Pediatrics, they looked all throughout the South, then ended up in South Texas.

No state income tax, malpractice situation is otherworldly, and the money is well above average.

It sounds to me like the 10-2 with no call job is going to be the tougher one to find. As such, I'd start by looking for that, and then find an EM job in that area.

Agree with Wilco. Find that cush pedi job first, then EM jobs are everywhere.

I'm not sure if these are everywhere, but in Houston there are several after hours pedi urgent care places. Not 10-2, but she could probably do 1-2 evenings per week on days you were off, with no call.

Thanks for all the suggestions.

Update: We did some cold calls last night for her, and we found her the Pediatrics job. 9:30-2 with no call! And the salary is really good for those hours.

I also found an ED job in the area, and the best part is that it is $210 an hour! It said to call the group, which I did, and I talked for a good half with the founder. I am about 1500 miles away, so he said that that phone call would count as an interview and he is sending me the contract and more information.

The money is really important here because we have well over $500k in debt.

Congrats!

If it's not rude, where is this area? It doesn't have to be specific.

Texas. I've found a bunch of really high paying jobs there, some up to $240 an hour. I didn't take the $240 because there was no opportunities for career advancement, no pediatric opportunities for my wife, and the location was terrible.

I'll put another plug here for Texas....

GREAT pay throughout most of the state (Dallas/Houston/Austin tends to be slightly lower..but still not too bad), CHEAP cost of living (even in those cities), many major airports, great colleges throughout the state, most places have darn good public schools, NO state income tax, but property tax is on the higher side...

It gets hot here at times, but thats what A/C is for. Occasional snows through the northern half at least, but no blizzards....

Malpractice climate is probably one of the best if not the best in the US.

Exactly. These are the reasons I really looked at Texas, even though I looked at other states, I really really looked at Texas.

Another Update: I called a group I am affiliated with (electives, rotations, personal connections, etc.), and they offered me a job paying $205 an hour, and they connected me to a local pediatric group for my wife, and they also offered her a job. She would work from 9-2 with no call, from Monday to Friday with a base pay of almost 100k! It is not in Texas, but in Minnesota, but that is still a very physician friendly state. I also have some family up there, and we love the state. I'm pretty positive I will go with them.

i wish i had friends in TX... in the end though, i know i'd be miserable w/o a support system. gonna give my home state a try for a while - definitely better than average for medmal/compensation, but not the goldmine of TX.
