So I just got one of those 'join the AMA!' leaflets. My initial impulse was to chuck it out, but then I thought I'd get your guys opinion: is it worth it for an EM resident to join the AMA? I am already an ACEP and EMRA member.
Nobody should join that worthless organization, unless there is a unified effort to bring a significant percentage of practicing physicians into the organization and completely turn it around.

I joined and have been a delegate for the last couple years. It is a decent opportunity to gain leadership positions if you so wish during residency. ACEP also has some very active members on the AMA and it is very easy to make connections with some high up people in ACEP. If you are looking to join just to join, it isn't really worth it, but if you are looking to get involved it can be a good experience.
Also the more EM people that join the AMA and list ACEP as their organization that represents them, the better for us as a specialty as we gain more delegate seats that way.

I've held state and national positions in ACEP, Texas, and Tennessee Medical Associations.
**** the AMA. They'll never see a dime from me. As far as I'm concerned, they represent me as much as Nancy Pelosi represents me.

No desire to join. They'll sell your prescribing data to drug companies and then tell you that you can't have a free ink pen when the rep comes by for a visit. I also disagree with the monthly letters from AMA saying that my "dues are enclosed."
