Kansas c/o 2015 Applicants

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
If accepted for the upcoming class, you would be Class of 2015. Enter Fall 2011, graduate May 2015.

Yes, but it says 'if you have questions regarding how you could become a more competitive applicant for the Class of 2015'. I think she means 'become a more competitive applicant for the Class of 2016.

Ah, I see what you're saying now. I think "become a more competitive applicant for future applications" might've been better wording. Oh well 🙄

Wasn't it already mentioned in this thread that there was a sort of "hold" status for people they aren't going to interview right away?

Yes, I remember that but still thought (in my head) that they weren't doing that. Sorry!

I also got the "viable applicant email" :annoyed:. Not sure what to think of it, because I have no idea how many people get to interview (or actually get in, for that matter) from this "interview holding pool". Anybody know??

"...you might be invited to interview later during the spring of 2011. You are still on our list as a viable applicant. If you have not heard from us by April 15, 2011, please feel free to contact us to check on the status of your application."

So, does this mean that they could call us for an interview as late as April?? That seems late, since acceptances from other schools would go out before this. I'm pretty sure I am missing something....😕

I'm sorry for those of you that got rejections today! If it makes you feel any better, I applied to Kansas last year, and originally got a rejection letter. THEN they sent me an email (like a week later) that said "Sorry (our bad, lol), you weren't supposed to receive that rejection email. This is the email that you should have gotten"!!! (and the one I "should have gotten" was the viable applicant email) 😱 You're gonna give someone a heart attack with these "mistaken" emails! You just never know what can happen in this crazy process!!

I also can't believe they dont even look at animal experience hours (according to that email)....booooo

I know!!:bullcrap:

boo.. I got rejected today too 🙁 If I knew that they weren't going to even look at experience hours or last 45 hour gpa I probably wouldn't have bothered applying. But good luck to everyone who got interviews!!

Seriously! I was taken completely off guard when I saw what the email said. I was completely expecting last 45 and experience to factor into this somehow and banking on that to save me. Blah. I think I'll shoot them an email after the holidays anyway just to see if they say the obvious and then beat my head against the desk again. :bang:

Good luck and congrats to all of you who got interviews! 😀

Kipani and iheartmycorgi... LOVE the avatars! Corgi's rock!! 😍

From,
Your fellow Corgi lover

I got the "viable applicant" email today too. I'm not sure how to feel about it... it's almost like they're leading us on haha

I also received the "viable applicant" email..... Hmmm... I wonder if anyone has ever been asked to interview from the "viable applicant" list....

I am hoping there are a lot of weird, strange people interviewing in the first round so that I have a better chance of getting an interview invite.

You may be in luck, I'm interviewing on Jan 21. 😉

Just to let everyone who is still waiting to hear from KS to not lose hope. Marci will send out emails in mid December to inform you if you have been flat out rejected or if you're still a "viable candidate". If you receive the viable candidate email it will basically say "We are not rejecting you at this time but we are not inviting you for an interview. If we need additional people to interview we may ask you in the spring. If you have not heard from us by April 1st, please contact us."
Basically... I got the viable email 12/15/09 and then exactly one week later I got an interview invite for the very last interview weekend. So even if you receive the viable candidate email, do not fret. I'm here so it's possible for all of you! Happy email stalking : )

Here is one at least!

Good luck to everyone who has an interview this weekend! 😀

So anyone want to talk about their interview experience from this weekend?

My thoughts are this...

This was my 3rd interview IS.
Nerve wracking but I felt comfortable.

Interview panel had three vets: professor, hospital clinician that also teaches, and a private practice vet who looked close to retirement age and half awake. I knew the clinician from a surgical procedure but I doubt that helped my chances.

Overall it was comfortable, time flew by and I think this was the FIRST year they actually really looked at me as a possible candidate. They actually asked about their concerns with me as a candidate.

Biggest concern they had NON-TRADITIONAL student! Ok this ticks me off but I get it your older have more life demands, blah, blah. Apparently the non-trads are the most likely to not succeed. Or so I was told. However, the good news was I was asked to convince them that this wouldn’t be the case for me. I then followed up my answer with asking them point blank if I convinced them. I was told yes. Here is hoping!

To everyone that didn’t make interviews something to keep in mind. We were told that there were 1311 applicants this year at KSU and they took the top 1/3 for interviews. Not sure how accurate that statement was but those are some crazy odds so try if you can to realize how amazing you are regardless of what the adcoms say. This is a crazy process and I swear there is no rim or reason to any of it!

(and then drove home 10 hours, getting back at 2am - that was a loooooong time to spend trapped in a car with my parents, hah)

My panel was the same: a professor (super super nice guy!), a clinician in the hospital who teaches (also very nice), and a private practice DVM who graduated from KSU (she was nice but quite intimidating).

This was my first interview and I was OOS. I prepped quite a bit for this interview, so it boosted my confidence level going into the interview a little (so my hands were just a little damp instead of super-sweaty and I don't think they could tell I was shaking....), but most of my prep was rather useless. I felt a lot more comfortable once the interview started because after the usual "Tell us about yourself in 2-3 minutes" they asked me to talk about my research, which I was totally ready for. They also specifically asked me a question about a sentence in my PS, and expanded off of that (how can we tell an animal is suffering, who's choice is it to treat the animal, etc). They also asked me about feed animals, which I have no (literally zero hours) of experience with, but I think that was just to see if I could adapt what I had learned in a SA clinic to an area of vetmed that I was unfamiliar with. The interview really did fly by - I had the last time slot of the day, and we actually ran over by 15 minutes, but it definitely did NOT feel like 45 minutes.

Also, a note on the stats of interview invites: it's actually less than the top 1/3! At the pizza party Saturday night, we were told they only invited 350 people out of the 1311 total applicants, which is just less than 27%.

I got the viable candidate email over a week ago. I guess it's better than being rejected outright. 🙄

It has been quite a ride the last week or so, but I am finally settled into state #6 for a few days and have my computer up and running!

Anyway, I really enjoyed my K-State visit, and was very impressed by everything I heard and saw! My interviewers were very nice... a little formal at first, but more personable as we went. I was asked about "why vet med," current events, ethics, and everything else was sort of spin offs from my answers and application. I was not given a hard time about being a non-traditional applicant, and in fact they seemed very interested in the different skills I will bring because of it. They did bring up the fact that this was my third application cycle and wanted to know what I had been doing to improve each year. I felt like it went really well (so naturally I'll probably get rejected😛)!

Good luck to everyone still waiting to interview, and I'm so glad some viable applicants are getting interviews too!

I interviewed and was accepted as OS last year. I chose to stick with my IS school (VMRCVM), but there are days when I wish I had chosen K St. It is a fantastic school and a fantastic program. For those of you who haven't been to the school or your interviews yet, you'll experience it too, I hope. It was such a warm and inviting atmosphere. I almost forgot that I was interviewing! The town is small and quiet, which may not fit everyone's needs, but the truth is that as a vet student, you don't get a lot of down time to worry about how much there is, or is not, to do! I flew in through Kansas City, via Delta airlines. It was a nice enough trip in (and they had a snow storm the week before, so the roads were a little bad) but the fight out was HORRIBLE. I was delayed overnight, ALONE in Atlanta 😡, but I survived and had the good feelings from my interview to keep me happy. I rented a car from Enterprise, and gave myself an extra day before the interview to look around town and make sure I knew how to get to the school so I wouldn't be late to the interview. I also heard good things about the shuttle service last year, but Manhatten airport was about $100 more than Kansas city, so even the car rental was less than that!
I wish everyone the best of luck, and if you want any more info just PM me!
PS, I applied to my IS 5 times, so I know how frustrating it get sometimes! You can do it, just be persistent and don't take "no" as your final answer!🙂

Hey guys....I haven't checked this thread in awhile, because I really thought my chances were slim for an interview because of the "viable applicant" thing, but here I am! Interview on 1/9! So, I am feeling a little behind for my K-State prep.

G2D - what type of "current events" did they ask you about? General events, or did they focus on veterinary happenings? Did you prep for this type of question? (I have to admit, I am bad about keeping up with the news 😳)

Everyone - what do you plan to wear to the pizza party? Should this attire be like the interview, or more casual? Do many parents attend? My mom is going with me to KS, but wasn't sure if many parents attended the events.

Looking forward to it, guys! I think I will fly in on Jan.7 (in case of bad weather), and won't be flying out until Jan.10. I'm gonna try to catch up with ya'll on this thread, so I don't feel so behind! 🙂

Pizza Party - Tons of family (including younger siblings, ect.). I think I was potentially the only one there alone! Dress is casual... I wouldn't look like a slob, but I wouldn't wear interview attire either! I wore nice jeans and a blouse. I don't think it mattered one spec!

Current events - My Ohio supplemental helped with this one! I was asked to name and discuss a current event relating to veterinary medicine. SDN helped me get ideas on where to get ideas!

Have fun! Everyone was SO nice!

just like G2D said: the pizza party is really casual! both my parents came with me (they actually tagged along for everything except the actual interview - my mom was really interested in the tour of the facilities), and i wore nice jeans and a sweater. we got there about 10 minutes before it started, but they were really lax about people walking in late, so if for some reason you're late for the pizza party, don't worry too much about it.

nevermind

Hey all y'all that interviewed already! Congrats on the interviews and best of luck for when they start with the decisions. Anyone feel like filling out the interview feedback info? I noticed we still don't have any from this year.

G2D, Kelly, DrK - thanks for the comments about your interviews!

Hey all,

If anyone is interested in getting a head start on the housing search while you're here (just in case!) PM me and I'd be happy to show you the rooms I rent out. It's a nice neighborhood, nice house, close to the vet school, and with the added benefit of least one friendly upperclassman to ask questions of 🙂

Just curious, how/why do people go from "viable applicant" to "interviewing" before any decisions have even been made? Does this mean they didn't find enough "good candidates" in the first interview pool, or does it mean that some people from the first interview pool have already declined?

I was wondering the same thing, but I imagine it may be both. They may have decided to reject some people that have already interviewed (No SDNers, of course! 😉), or maybe some people declined the interview. I would be more inclined to think that they decided to reject some people that already interviewed, because I can't imagine that anyone would turn down the opportunity to interview! (I know I wouldn't!)

Oh man, Jan. 9 doesn't feel very far away anymore, since Christmas is over. Starting to get nervous!! 😳

With some schools already having acceptances, people who got into their first choice/in-state school already may have declined or cancelled their interviews, in order to save the $$$ and give someone else a chance...

Wow... thanks to those who did that rather than make the rest of us wait!

I interviewed in December and I think it went pretty well, so I hope this means I have a better chance of getting in now! I don't think there was anything in my interview that would be "reject immediately" material- I'm excited!

On that note, if you were bumped up to interview status from "viable applicant" status, please post so I can get a rush of adrenaline with each person moved up to interviewing!!! (aka, me being one spot closer to being accepted-right?):xf::xf::xf:

Sorry for the triple posts... but I just got a call from an area code 913 number. How does KU notify people of things? Is a phone call good/bad????:scared::scared::scared:

I called back and it goes straight to voicemail.

True. Didn't think of that 🙂

I'm not sure if I posted this already on this thread (I did on the interview invites thread), but I am one that got bumped from "viable applicant" to interview 😀. Got the interview invite a week or so after the "viable applicant" email.

913 is a Kansas City Area Code (Manhattan is 785)-I don't think you would be getting anything from the school with that number-unless you have before?

And it's K-State, not KU. Don't make that mistake while here, or you'll get stoned. (Just kidding-or maybe not)

Sorry... K-State, then 🙂

No, they've never called me before. I probably had a mini-heart attack for nothing, but there's absolutely no reason I should be getting a call from anywhere in KS other than vet school. I didn't even stay at a hotel when I was there, just drove the 7 hrs there and 7 hrs back straight.

G2D, Kelly, DrK - thanks for the comments about your interviews!

(removed my comment that can be read below anyway that was not in line with the tone I meant, the tone I meant is clarified in the next post)... With that said, I already made some comments in this thread and honestly, I felt decently prepared by going over questions already in the interview feedback section. Don't worry, have answers for the common questions, and try hard to relax (I know that is hard!)

I plan to post in the interview feedback after the interview cycle is over. I'm probably being selfish, but I feel like we should all go into the interviews with similar "insider" knowledge since they will evaluate us against each other.

Ouch, g2d, that's a bit harsh. You already have like 3 acceptances, right? I guess you didn't benefit at all from EllieG's post with Ohio's questions? She didn't have to help us all out, but she did. Where's the love?

OK, I'm sorry. I in no way meant to start anything, and boy to I regret that post.

I got the impression that the "custom(?)" in other years was to post interview feedback after the interview cycle, and I was just trying to be reassuring for future applicants that feedback would be entered.

If you all look back in this thread, I posted much of what was covered in my interview already, and much of it really was very specific to my situation anyway. I was in fact trying to be helpful with my previous post, and reassuring that I will do the feedback at some point.

Sorry for coming off as ungrateful. I think in this process we have all become at least a little bit selfish, and I was the one to say it. Although in retrospect, it of course is not the word I should have used.

I think that the 'successful applicants' thread is usually only filled in near or after April 15th. However, it seems like most give interview feedback right away - the main reason being that you tend to forget what you were asked at which school, etc.

I doubt anyone really thought you were aiming to hurt feelings or seem ungrateful.

OK. I accept your apology. 🙂 I've thought this forum was a lot less competitive this cycle, or maybe I'm naive.

As I already posted on the ISU thread, this is one of my first posts but I've been stalking the threads all fall!!

I interviewed (OOS) at KSU on 12/20... I had leave from Iowa City just an hour after I graduated! I got lucky and didn't run into any snow on the way down there.

Do any of you know if there's a deadline for when we need to send our fall transcripts to KSU? Also, does our cumulative GPA get recalculated and considered for selection? I'm starting to get nervous... they send out letters in just over a month! (as if we haven't waited long enough already..!)

Hawkeye, I believe Kansas does not required applicants to send fall transcripts. Only admitted students need to have fall transcripts sent.

Oh man, how did I miss out on the pizza party? Was it just for OOS applicants? I interviewed on 12/18 and didn't hear anything about it. I thought I saw on here that there had been a pizza party in previous years, but since I didn't hear anything about it, I thought that they might not be having it this year.

For those of you with upcoming interviews at KSU, most of my interview questions came from my application or were derivatives thereof. I wouldn't sweat it too much. Everyone was really nice and I got the sense that they just wanted to get to know me. I will certainly post in the interview feedback section, but I thought this might help more than specific questions because most of my questions were specific to my application. (Other than generic motivation questions)

With some schools already having acceptances, people who got into their first choice/in-state school already may have declined or cancelled their interviews, in order to save the $$$ and give someone else a chance...

I'm one of them 🙂
Good luck to everyone that got asked for interviews that didn't at first. You deserve it and I hope that you guys ace the interview!

I'm not sure what made me think of this today, but I wanted to add to my previous comments and interview feedback 🙂d) that I was also asked about the new biosecurity lab being built (NBAF), so it wouldn't hurt to have some notion of what that is all about. I had only a notion about it but luckily spent some time talking to a current student about it right before my interview! Thanks to whoever that was!

Oh, and I also wanted to add that I was completely touched by the way the vet student (a different one than mentioned above) who took me to my interview room stood around waiting and chatting with me while the last interview was wrapping up. That could have been a seriously nervewracking 5 minutes but she was so sweet and pleasant that I went into the interview feeling relaxed! 👍 to the students who hung around after finishing classes!

I just called KSU to withdraw my application and decline my interview... it was a hard decision (especially with all the wonderful stuff I'm hearing about the school from those who interviewed), but now that I've been accepted somewhere that is better off for me financially, it seemed dishonest to go and interview when someone else who might actually go to the school could go in my spot. I'm crossing my fingers for all you guys still on the 'viable applicants' list! Best of luck! :luck: :xf::xf::xf:

Does anyone have any idea how soon after the interview we should find out if we're accepted/rejected?

I tried to look for clues in last year's thread, but couldn't find anything helpful.

Is everyone excited for this weekend? 😀
I'm getting nervous!!

I saw that acceptances were sent out on February 12th last year so I'm assuming around the same time. So long to wait after interviewing this weekend! (Though the people that interviewed in December are waiting even longer.)

I'm super excited for this weekend and very nervous! Can't wait to meet everyone at the pizza party!

February 12th! I know it's only a month but sooo long.

I had made plans with friends who live in Lawrence to pick me up at KC airport and drive me to KState. I was going to stay with them in Lawrence on Friday and Saturday, but they called today to say they'll be out of town for the weekend! Now I'm faced with renting a car and staying in Manhattan, which sucks, cost wise ($40 fee added to rental if under 25) However it leaves me with more time to explore. My interview is 3:30 on Saturday, anyone have recommendations for things to do after 5pm on Friday thru Sunday at noon?
