Anyone heading out there from California?
I just looked at moving truck prices, and now I am not sure how I can afford to get out there. Any thoughts?
For about a thousand dollars I can rent a truck for one way travel....ouch!

I am ANXIOUSLY awaiting the mass migration of the "big yellow trucks"!! Cause that means I AM OUTTA THIS PLACE!!!

We [2nd-years] just finished finals yesterday morning...Gen Surgery 1 was the last one. It was more picuyne than we were told to expect. In fact, we were told to expect 100 questions, worth 500 of the 1000 points possible. We actually got a short test of 50 questions -- still worth 50% of our grade! Nothing like knowing that for every boo-boo you make, you loose 1% off your final grade!?

However, it is over and I am damned glad!

Afterward, it was a blast gathering with lots of 1st & 2nd year students on the patio @ Bogie's for cold adult beverages in the wondeful K'ville spring weather.

Best of luck to you all!!

Hey, for those of you still seeking housing, one of our Path professors secretary also manages/rents property through a local realtor. Her name is Bonnie Truitt and you can reach through Heritage House Realty: 660-665-5638

Congratulations Dave! It must feel like a ton of bricks have been removed.

Andrew 😉

I don't know how you do it but I do know that several first years live there now and do every year. You could probably call admissions and they can tell you who to contact or e-mail me if that doesn't work and I can see what I can find out. Time is somewhat limited due to boards now so try admissions first and if that doesn't work send me an e-mail.

I can't wait to start, so I am putting this topic back at the top. I have been checking this topic everyday but nothing has changed on it recently. There are others like me out there I am sure.

Toran 😉

Toran,
you're not the only one, this wait is killing me. In a way, knowing earlier only makes things harder. Anyway, one week from today I leave Colorado bound for Kirksville. 😀

KCOM2005 - Good luck on your pilgrimage to Kirksville.
When are the rest of the 05ers coming into town? I would like to hunt some of you down who are moving to Kirksville early so we can chew some fat and hit the lake or happy hour some. Anything to make the time pass quicker....
I will be going up Aug. 1st...back to the ville. See you there!

Toran, got a mountain bike? The lake has some pretty good single track trails.

I am already in the Kirksville Area!! When you all get here, email me and my husband and I would be glad to meet you for drinks/dinner/whatever. Received all the extracurricular-club stuff today...what are you guys joining?

Does anyone know whether those of us moving there early will have access to the athletic facilities?

I won't be heading out to K'ville until the beginning of August. I recently quit my job and am loving life. This summer is going to be awesome. I'm going to be travelling most of the summer. Myself and four of my buddies are going to Mexico for a week starting next Saturday. After that I'll be spending a few weeks up in Vail with my buddies. Then I'll be going to Montana for about a month. And I'll also be going to visit a friend in the DC area. But the best thing is that at the end of it all I get to start school and meet all of you. I CAN'T WAIT!!!!! See you all there!!

Mike Chase

I am heading to Kirksville in early August. My wife and I found a nice place pretty close to campus, but it comes available August 5th or something like that. This summer cannot go fast enough.

Hope the rest of you have a good summer. No travelling the country here, but I will save some money for my future child (due Sept. 2).

Later,
Bryan

No bike yet Justin, but I am saving every penny to get a fine ride. Man, I can't believe that you bike too; I think this apartment deal is going to work really well.
I will arrive during the first few days of August. We should all meet for a toast before school starts.
Here's to working our butts off in medical school!

Toran

Hi people. I'm getting pumped up also...I'll be in K'ville around august 9th or 10th. Any runners in our new entering class? (I just finished my 1st marathon yesterday...and I ache all over). 😀

I love to run; I am a fellow soccer player to all of you out there. I look forward to running around in that indoor facility playing around.
Bump this forum back to the top!
Financial aid off, housing done, now for health insurance!

Toran

I hear the Northeast Missouri area has some nice trails.
We need to get this Meeting Room kickin'. The Western COMP Meeting Room's got 28 pages now!!!
I guess I'll talk to all ya'll when I get back...I'm going on a vacation trip to China!!! (I'm not chinese, dont no any Mandarin and am a vegetarian...should be an interesting trip).

CHINA???????
I have been looking for fairly reasonable airline tickets to China. I have a friend who is teaching English over there to young Chinese children. She has invited me...but a thousand bucks for a ticket...eeks.. Was yours in this price range? If it was cheaper, can you tell me how you booked it? Thanks!!!!!!!!!!

KCOM bound, I want it, I need it. School here I come!

I have been gone for a bit, but did someone mention single-track mountain bike trails in K'vile?

Yep, there is...on the north side of Forest Lake (the lake in the middle of Thousand Hills Park). You can access the trailhead off of Boundry...any of the mountain bikers in the class ahead of you will be able to show you where. Be wary though...THIS IS TICK COUNTRY!!

😛

I was just watching CNN-Headline news and they said that the interest rate for federal student loans has dropped to ~5%. Does anyone know any more about this?

I am interviewing at KCOM on June 18th. Any advice on where to stay, what to expect, ect.. would be appreciated. I'm quite surprised they are conducting interviews this late, any ideas why? KCOM is one of my top choices so anything that might help me would be great.

Thanks,
Dave

Dave,
Congrats on the interview. I would contact the admissions office on a place to stay, they can set up a spot for you with a student usually. I just moved to K'ville, I'm in the class of 2005, so I'm not really an authority on the town or the school (but give me an email if I can be of any more assistance).

Hey everybody, where are you? Hope you are enjoying your summer.

Does anyone still have the info on the test taking files? I seem to have misplaced them in the move. If someone could post a contact for me I would appreciate it.

Well, I can't wait to move out on August 7. I'll be at Navy OIS for a month starting Saturday and then I'm back home for two weeks and then...the big move!

BTW, Mike, I'm in DC. When are you going to be here? Maybe we can meet for dinner/drinks/whatever. I can't wait to meet all my classmates!

Has anyone found health insurance less expensive that that which SOMA provides? I know that some of it depends on what kind of coverage you want, but speaking in general terms, I am thinking that there has to be something out there for a little less $$.

If you find something cheaper than SOMA please pass it on. I am with the SOMA insurance right now and would love to switch to something else.

So...as far as I can tell...there are about 7 or 8 people in the class of 2005 who are aware of SDN.
How is everyone doing now? What are you doing? Are you in Kirksville Yet? How do you like it?
What is everyone doing for fun this summer to relax?
I just got back from the outer banks in NC. All I did was lay on the beach all day and drink Corona. It was almost exactly like the commercial. (I wish I would have had a cheap pager to skip across the water.)
I also read an extremely inspirational book titled "Tuesdays with Morrie". If you get a chance, pick it up. It is an easy two hour read that will blow your hair back.
Everyone take care!

Hi,
No, I haven't made the pilgrimage to K'ville yet. But I did make it to China. It was unbelievable. The people there are so nice. There are no fat people in that country (at least in Shanghai). I think I saw maybe two fat people and one of them was a caucasian. Yup, did the whole thing, climbed the Great Wall, saw the Terracotta Warriors, and all the pagodas you could ever want to see. And it was fun trying to communicate with people who know 10 words of english which helped me to learn about 10 words of Chinese.

BTW CJKalmat, my old roommate and best friend in college is now a police officer in Ann Arbor. Just in case you ever get in trouble....

INSURANCE! My husband and I both have insurance throught Fortis. Their telephone number is 800-800-1212. His monthly premium is $56 and mine is $73. The female's will generally be a little more. That does NOT include maternity clause. We've found it to be good. However, we get pretty low coverage because neither one of us go to the doctor a lot. In April of 2000, I had to have my appendix removed and the insurance provided excellent coverage. It didn't pay at 100%, but we ended up with only paying about $1,600 of an $8,000 bill. So, we felt it was worth it. We do not have children, so I can't give you any indication of family premiums.

I can vouch that they have been very professional with questions I have had and with the processing of any bills. Now, that isn't to say others don't have problems with this...I've just had good experiences with them. Anyway, it's worth looking into, because that SOMA insurance was WAY TOO HIGH for the little amount of medical attention I seek.

Any of you can email me anytime.....I am in the Kirksville area!!

There is one upon receipt of acceptance, and some others in May and June.
I was accepted to another school that wants a deposit immediately and my interview at KCOM isn't until March 1. Any advice? I would love to attend KCOM, but I realistically won't know until I see the school. I don't feel that I can gamble with the other school and then be out a seat for next year's entering class at either schools. I know that you have a higher percentage of acceptance if invited to an interview at KCOM, but I don't know by how much. Anyone know what the chances of acceptance are at this point?
Thanks a bunch,
Toran•

I was in the same situation in that I was accepted at my state school before KCOM. I paid the $100 acceptance fee at OSU-COM, figuring if I got in at KCOM I was willing to lose the $100. I was shocked that KCOM requires a total of $2000 in acceptance/matriculation fees before it is all said and done. But I do believe that you get what you paid for. This school is the most outstanding school I have visited.

I realize that we may have to wait for something to come available, but that is fine with me. My wife is about 5 months pregnant so we are coming down as early as something is available.

If you know when you are going up to K'ville, then more power to ya I guess. I will see you all definitely by next fall!

Later,
Bry

We moved the first of June. Let me know if you are already here--I just found the forum and am not yet up to speed. I live in the condos on Sundown Drive just about one block from campus. The condos are very nice and affordable. I know several students who are moving out over the next 2 months, too.

I've been using the facilities--the people are very nice. Ask to speak to Dan Martin and he will hook you up!

Gee Old Man,
You sound like you are in a hurry or something. I don't know why, only 5 weeks and 1 day of classes left. I can't wait either.

Hey you two, enjoy your summertime sunshine pre-clinical idyllic lives out in that Brigadoon-equivalent prarie-land cow/college-town while you can... things are gonna get a lot faster once you return to your preKCOM medical lives. It's been a lot more fun for me out here, but that's no surprise. Keep in touch and let me know what doctors you decide to become. 🙄

For all who are interested, my wife has considered sitting for a couple of children to ease the concern others have about daycare. My wife is a licensed manicurist, but will not be working so that she can stay at home with our 2 daughters. One is six and will be in first grade, while the other is almost 2. My wife will only keep two children so that she may give them persoanl attention like we would want given to our children. However, if you have school-age children and younger ones in need of babysitting, she can pick the older ones up from school and keep them until you are out of class. We can work out a schedule that is mutually beneficial. If you're interested, email me at [email protected] . She will be charging $75/week, which is considerably less than most daycare and gives you the peace of mind that comes with not leaving them at a daycare (we live one block from campus, also, so you can check on him/her anytime). 🙂

Hey All!!!

I'm not going to have much access to the internet until I move out to K'ville at the beginning of August. I just want to let you all know that I can't wait to meet everyone!!! I hope you all have a great summer. I'm going to be on chill mode until I move 😎 .

I just recieved an acceptance so I'll be joining ya'll!

Congratulations, Dave! I'm looking forward to meeting you! 😀

KCOM 2005,

just wanted to let you know we had a blast at your place Wednesday night! Maybe we can do it again soon . . .

As soon as anyone arrives in town, let us know and we'll get together!

🙂

HELL YEAH!!

After three arduous years, three app cycles--I got in! Third time is the charm, baby!!

I had all but given up when I was called for an interview on the 21st. They called me yesterday to give me THE GOOD NEWS!!

I'm looking forward to meeting you all and am definitely planning on coming up there within the next week or so to find a place to live--I know I'm WAY behind on that one.
Anyway, when I do, maybe some of us should try to get together or something--whatdya say?

Carrie and OMD--I met the both of you in Feb. 2000 before that interview at dinner at Ailerons (after which I was placed on the dreaded "Alternate List"). Anyway, thanks for your advice and everything and now it's finally happened--on to Kirksville!

WOOHOO!!

Congrats, Monkey Boy! There are still places available in town, so you are not too far behind. The Woodwinds are very nice, if any apts are available still, and the condos we live in on Sundown Drive will have openings in August. I've seen tons of places in town with "For Rent" signs in front of them, like Osteopathy Heights, if you're single. Good luck finding a place and post when you're settled in so we can meet!

john

Hey Monkey,
Nice show of persistance, way to go! Must be an incredible feeling for you. Looking forward to hearing the whole story.

Hey class of 2005!! 1.5 months to go. 44 days. 1056 hours. 63360 minutes........
Can't wait to get that white coat.
Anyone else in the class NAVY HPSP? I'm sure if you are, you are in OIS now. I just got the call so I am too late for OIS this year. Can't wait to meet you all!!!
Bustin

Man can this summer go any slower. I can't move down to Kirksville until August 6-ish. My wife and I are moving into a nice house that is currently occupied by a second year student. It is really nice, but it kinda sucks having to wait till the very last minute to get to Kirksville.

I probably shouldn't be in a hurry...in a couple months we will probably be wanting a break. Anyways, see you all in August!

Later,
Bryan

i know what you mean--we had selected a house, but didn't want to wait for the second years to leave. we chose a condo that was available immediately instead! it's hard to wait! we're looking forward to getting everyone here! btw, i requested a 3/4 length coat, but they declined!
