I sent in a primary application for the new KCOM-Mesa this past monday. I was wondering if anyone has applied yet, aswell, and have heard anything from them yet. Specifically a secondary application invite. Is anyone going to their open house on Oct. 14??

i applied the moment it became available.. still no word

If anyone is going to the MESA open house on the 14th......can you ask if they have any idea what the 10 health care centers might be???

I'll be there, and it is one of the main things I want to know. I will keep you informed. Has anyone gotten a secondary invite from them yet??, and if so when did you turn in your primary?

if i dont hear anything back by november/december, i want my money back

I talked to the admissions office today and the woman I spoke with was very kind and helpful. I submitted my primary over the weekend as well. She mentioned that there hasn't been any secondaries sent out yet and that the first set of interviews most likely won't even start until November. She even said that they aren't quite sure what the interview day will consist of. Of course, this is all due to the fact that they were late on getting their accredidation. As for the open house, I'll be there.🙂

i'll be there, too. 🙂

i wonder if we haven't heard more details on the location sites because atsu-mesa is still working on them...right now i'm wondering where or at least what to expect from their site locations: rural or urban? if both, how will students be divided? will individual placements be negotiated or will a lottery system will be used? how will the first year compare/contrast to other DO schools (cadavers, etc.)? how much work or material will be individual, group, computer, small lecture? if all sites will be using the same basic syllabus/time plan? what the second/third/fourth years will each look like and if and when more travel is to be expected? what assistance will be available to help students pass the boards? what sort of electives will be granted and/or whether students will have the freedom to set up some of their rotations at sites of their choice or if they'll be limited to specific NACHC campuses? how the community faculty advisors/professors were or will be selected... i'm going to have to write this all down haha... what else are you all wondering?

YEAH I WILL BE THERE TOO

Just spoke with the admissions director today and she told me that they are still in the process of getting the contracts for the locations signed and they will be posted on the web by November. It should be a good mix of rural and urban I was told.

The first year you will be put into groups of 10 and will learn in small groups..she didn't elaborate here. Then 2nd through 4th year each group of 10 will be sent to a community health center.

That's all I found out. She was really nice and friendly!

What i am wondering is that will there be rotations set up as far as 3rd and 4th years are concerned? Will students be able to do clerships in different medical fields other than general practice? I am wondering because I do not know what type of services these community centers will provide.

Well, I think that sounds pritty cool. Seems lika a very unique, real world, future doctor friendly curriculum. A good environment to learn collaboration, something every good doctor needs to be an expert in. This open house should be interesting. 👍

so for those of you who went to the open house on saturday (oct 14)

were u able to find out any more info on the 10 health care centers.....even though they are still picking them out and if they gave any specs on the curriculum

also how are the Mesa facilities...i know they have a dental school already but any more info would be great from someone who went there.

any other input or thoughts as well....

where did all of u phx area sdners dissapear to....? you did go to the open house right? 🙂

Hello,
I went to the open house. The whole experience was really nice. The campus is very nice and new. They were still building much of the medical school program's facilities. They were still building alot of things like student housing aswell, but the dental and P.T. facilities were very modern and very nice. We got to hear from the dean and the assistant dean. They were very exited and down to earth about what we should expect as the first class of their new D.O. program. Basically, there is 100 spots to fill. The 100 students will be broken into groups of ten which is were we wiil be spending alot of our time. The school is very clinically oriented, so I got the impression that from day 1 we will be spending most of our time discussing clinical cases with our groups and spending little time in lecture. The first year is the only year you spend at the Mesa campus. After the first year you are sent out to public health centers around the country. So, depending on where you choose or are chosen to go is how the groups of ten are formed. Some of the states where these public health clinics are possibly located are Arizona, Utah, Massachuesettes (did I spell that right?), Hawaii, Washington, California, S. Carolina. Now these are some of the sites they speculate, but they said nothing is official right now. I think that this school is going to be very innovative, I have to say it's looking like my first choice. They haven't sent out secondaries yet, so don't think you've been shunned quite yet if you haven't gotten one. The food they gave us at the end of the lecture/tour was really good. 👍

Hawaii..nice and on-campus housing..even better. Seems like that group of 10 will be really close nit..

The school does seem to be really hands-on and innovative..for some strange reason I am really drawn to this school..it's betwee Nova and this school..

Bring on the secondaries allready..:meanie:

thanks mletter,

with that being said, will you be receiving as much material as any other school's 1st 2 years of lecture based material?

the groups of 10 thing sounds really cool. however, it could be a double-edged sword. what if end up hating those people? it could end up like a MTV reality television series or something. but i guess that's life.

Finally, the secodaries are going out! Kiddingme, What day did you send in your primary??

We will be recieving the same material. The most important thing is our licensure exams. The dean and assistant dean said that the school would be focusing on the material we needed to know to get good scores on those exams, and like I said tons of clinical education from day 1. It reminds me of PBL, but more improved.

I will continue to keep my eyes peeled for the elusive COM-Mesa secondary. Like the Lockness monster or Bigfoot, although there may be false sitings, I know that one day I will capture it and tame it.

I see that it looks like one or two people have received their secondaries from ATSU-Mesa. Has anyone else received a secondary? I made them a designation the day that it was available, but still haven't heard anything. I have also called the admissions office and no one seems to want to answer. I am not sure what the hold up may be, but hopefully they will start coming soon!😀

The above post says that they mistakenly thought they recieved a secondary. No one has recieved secondaries yet, that I am aware of. The admission folks at Mesa said they hope to start sending secondaries next week.

Whoops! I guess next time I should read the whole post and not just certain entries. I think I got all excited.

Has anyone heard from this school yet? What is the deal! I want my secondary:meanie:

I spoke to the admissions office last week...they said they were behind because they were a new school and would be sending out applications in the next two weeks.

I wonder if they are really going to open this cycle. 😕

So, I have a question...Let's say we start getting the secondary apps in the next week or two, when will they actually start interviewing? If they are this behind, then who is to say it won't be the same way with other stuff? Has anyone talked to the admissions office regarding anything like this?😕

I wonder how this whole thing will work out. Why is it taking them such long time to get the secondaries out? They will be way behind with the whole process.

Who knows? they will probably wait 'till the last minute, send out secondaries and interview everyone that applies and accept anyone who goes for an interview.

Well, that's one of the biggest problems with new, unestablished schools is that there is no real guarantee what will happen. It's not open until it's open so to speak. Hopefully none of us are putting all our eggs in one basket!

My excitment for mesa has died down considerably...geez. send me the secondary allready...

Is anyone worried about the small group learning? It seems to me that it would be absolutely great for clinical discussion. However, so much of Step I is more basic science oriented that I would be concerned w/ being able to achieve a high score. Path, Phys, Biochem are fairly largely tested (especially USMLE) & I guess I would have a hard time seeing how one year would hardly be enough to prep students for boards. Has anyone asked the admissions questions about this possible problem?

Sure getting into med school is nice, but if you can't pass the boards, you still can't become the physician you dreamed of becoming.

One more question...Is this school oriented towards primary care? It seems like it may be that way w/ the short pre-clinical education. I apologize if these questions are already answered, but I haven't had much time to stay current w/ the new schools opening up as a MS-II.

I think that the small group learning will be good for some skills, but not for others. This school is definetly geared toward people who want to be primary care physicians in rural and underserved settings. When I went to the open house this was REALLY emphasised. People who want to go into specialties that don't involve primary care should not apply, is what they told us. Their curriculum will only really focus on primary care. I can not emphasize this enough. I am sure that clinical skills on the COMLEX/USMLE will be very good for these students, however, other parts of the exams may take considerably more effort from the students, and on their own. It's hard for me to really know as it is for all of us, how students in this program will fare on these exams cause as we all know this school has no track record yet.

I was at the open house also and agree with mletter. Also, I have talked to the admissions office and they were very specific in pointing out the primary care issues. They really want those who are going the primary care route. Another thing, as far as the COMLEX/USMLE are concerned, I don't think it will be as much of an issue as a lot of people may think. You are still getting all of your basic sciences your second year, but the addition of the clinical settings are a plus for your second year.

I also called the admissions office today and they are still saying that the computer system is down and that the emails for the secondaries should be out shortly. Who knows when shortly is though. Has anyone else called and are they saying the same thing?

Ya, I keep hearing the same thing from admissions both on the phone and in emails. Kinda frustrating! 😡

Hello all,
This is a purely random thought. I forgot to put this in my post about the curriculum/open house. They will be doing prosection and not disection at this university. Not sure if that makes too much of a difference?

I have heard and read good and bad things about prosection. I guess for me it just takes the fun out of anatomy. 😀
