So I applied to the masters program around December, but I didn't get all my supplemental information in till march 1st (long journey/story). Well, I haven't heard anything back since then. Is it safe to assume I was rejected?
 
Not yet. The last email I received was on the same day I turned in my last requirement.

I have a lot of classmates that were called off the wait list within a month of the program starting but that's all I really know. Sorry I can't be more help. As students get into the different programs, they will drop out of the KCU program and open spots will be filled by the wait list. Good luck!

Atmosphere: teachers are great. They put a big emphasis on being student-centered. As for student dynamics, that really depends on your class. As a current COB, my classmates are awesome but I heard that the class before was not as nice (but that's just second hand info so take with a grain of salt).

I personally am living by myself at Century Towers, which is right across from campus. I've never lived by myself before and thought I'd miss having a roommate but I've found it really nice to live alone. When I want to hang out with others, it's not hard so I don't miss out. But I also have a dedicated space to study if I don't wanna study on campus.

As for exams, I guess that depends on how you study? Part of being successful in this program is learning how to study and what works for you. Don't get behind on studies and MCAT(if you need it). For most classes if you put in the time, you should be okay but some classes are harder to predict than others which can happen wherever you go to school. Most tests are pretty fair but there's always gonna be a lot of material to cover. Just make sure you know if it's mostly multiple choice or includes true/false, fill-in, short answer, etc. Even if you don't do as well, most grades will be curved up to 85%, make sure you're at or above the class average.

As for night life, many of my classmates go out every weekend in the Power and Light district, but that's not really my scene so I'm not the best judge. Maybe someone else can comment. 😉

I really feel the program has prepared me for Med school and would definitely recommend attending.

Does anyone know if KCUMB talks about the "priority consideration" for COB applying to COM criteria at the Accepted Students Day? Or do they wait until orientation? More obsessive questions... Sorry lol
 
I had the same question since I can't make accepted students day...I'm worried I'll miss that important information.
 
So I was put on the waiting list last week and yesterday, I received an email from the dean saying a seat has been made available.
I am probably being too suspicious or pessimistic, but does that mean I have been officially accepted? I emailed the admissions office and have yet to hear from them.
I just don't want to get my hopes up!!🤔

I was waitlisted in Dec and got a similar email yesterday, followed by 3 more all with congrats and how to proceed so Im guessing you got in as well. The emails were staggered throughout the day and out of order so I wouldnt fret too much! I have given up my seat though because I have decided to accept Western U MSMS invite instead so my seat can go to another hopeful soul!!! Goodluck everyone!!!

Is anyone currently apartment hunting? If so, what do you recommend? I am looking into Century Towers and possibly Quality Hill (if they have any studios)!
This is my first time ever to apartment hunt, I lived at home with my mom for all of undergrad and I have no idea how to go about this! :nailbiting:

I've heard Century Towers is really convenient for KCUMB students, and I can imagine it's fun to have other med/pre-med students close by for studying and hanging out. When I did my apartment search I used padmapper.com quite a bit. They have tons of filters (# of rooms, cat/dog friendly, etc) and it pulls listings from multiple websites I believe. It's nice to be able to search with the map function too. I live ~20 minutes away because we live closer to my wife's job in south KC, but I have several friends who used to live in River Market and loved it. (I think it's semi-pricey though--one friend's studio was around or slightly over $1000/month.) Good luck!!

Got my polio booster, meningitis and tdap shots yesterday. Gosh, my immune system in shock! Body ache and fever, not sure why they require polio boosters🙁 sucks.

Anyone planning on taking the mcat course during the fall? I scored a 498 on my last attempt, contemplating if I should take it before the fall semester starts.

Were you mmr titers low? I hope I don't have to take any more shots. Still waiting on my lab results for all the titers. Fingers crossed.

Yeah, my titer mmr came back too low. So I got the booster for it, and man did it sting! My arm was sorest from that one. Also I realized we have to wait 6 from the point of vaccination to have the titers re-drawn.

I plan to take it sometime this summer as well! I am scared to try to take it while in classes because I don't know what to expect in terms of course load. (But I assume it will be an extremely heavy load)
 
Hello guys! let me know if you have any more questions! I am going to be selling some of my books, and keeping a few others.

Namely I will be selling my Biochemistry book for $75 and my histology for $50 so if you're interested just send me a message!

I live at CT and I would recommend it! Neighborhood is shady at best but the area is fenced in and it's pretty standard dorm living if you're coming from undergrad. I really like seeing my classmates when I walk to class or in the building and I have a dog who just adores CT and all the dog friends he has here! I would recommend, if you're not an animal person to look somewhere else. Just because I think it can get kind of uncomfortable in a small elevator, in lobby, or in the front of the building if you don't like dogs.
 
Hey guys! I am looking to find someone to sublease my apartment from 2nd week in june. My landlord said you can look to extend it once the lease is over (around first week august and they have 10 month leases which is great for this program). I live in a studio apartment in westport (midtown). Direct message me for details!

Unfortunately, lectures are not recorded and posted online like they are in the COM. They really value attendance even though they don't really enforce it. The COB class before us stopped coming to class second semester and they changed the recording lectures policy for our class.

However, you can have any professor sign a permission form and you can personally record their lectures.

It depends on the class. Some professors teach directly out of the book and lectures are not as helpful but technically you have to fill out an excused absence form for any classes you miss. I personally don't like to miss class since I'm paying for those classes.

First semester classes started at 8a and were done by 12:30 at the latest. You have most afternoons free except for every other Wed when you have Anatomy presentations. Second semester is way more hectic in terms of scheduling but everyone has a different schedule based on their elective choice and scientific seminar group.

You can choose to run home for lunch or not. Depending on what's available in the cafeteria, that's usually one of the better choices that are reasonably priced (unless you bring lunch or cook). Although today was Extreme Recycling Day and if you brought something recyclable, you got a ticket for $5 off at one of the 4 food trucks they brought onto campus. 🙂 I had Monk's Roast Beef sandwich with Poutine fries and it was delicious (pretty pricey but worth it).

Not really (regarding professional clothing). There will be specific days where you're required to dress professionally but KCU will be pretty clear when you need to. (e.g. when pictures are being taken). The first few weeks people may dress up a little but lots of students (including COM) wear yoga pants for girls and shorts for guys. Also, when you have a presentation, most students dress up. Part of the Dean's letter you'll receive (upon completion of the program) is regarding professionalism, so keep that in mind.
 
Is it too late to apply for this program? I know the application deadline is June 15, but would most if not all the spots be filled by now?

MCAT: 30

The MCAT score turns 3 years old in July, so that worries me a little. I also failed a class (pharm) in the LECOM post-bacc. I got As and Bs in everything else, but I'm hoping that one fail isn't the final nail in the coffin, especially since I was so close.

I believe that if you were to apply for COB, you would get waitlisted. However, the current COB class had a lot of movement off of the waitlist right before the program started so I think you do have a chance of getting in. You would definitely need to get at least 3.5 GPA in the program to be considered for COM. The good thing about that is - they will only look at the COB GPA and not any other grades (or at least that's what we were told). When applying for COM, I'm not sure if they will accept the expiring MCAT but you could always call or email to verify. I made the mistake of trying to take classes and study for the MCAT. I really encourage everyone to complete the MCAT (getting the minimum 501) BEFORE entering the program so you can just focus on grades. All testing is done through your iPad with mostly multiple-choice questions (1st-2nd order), which can be difficult for students who are used to short answer questions. Be prepared to work super hard and you should succeed.

@musicmed I've done a M.S. in Biomedical Sciences before (at Barry). Do you think COB would still accept me even though I've done the same/similar program before?

COB will accept an old MCAT if it is within 3 years. But since your old MCAT is expiring this year, the COM may or may not accept since you'd be applying for entry in 2017; so I would ask Patty or Brooke.

In my class, there are some students who have already done a similar program but you really need to focus on getting A's.

After the first exam, top students will be asked if they want to be a paid tutor (school pays them; you do not). Then you can schedule to work with a tutor whenever you need help. For certain classes like Biochem and Immuno, the school had MS1 students who were former COB have a group tutoring session.

(I didn't get the MCAT minimum so I was waitlisted and lost my conditional acceptance) As far as COB vs. COM, some classes will be similar. Biochem used practically the same slides (but they use a different book). One MS1 (former COB) said that the transition was a lot easier since you already know the language. There is some overlap with teachers but not much. I'm not looking forward to Anatomy lab since COB doesn't have that but COM definitely has practical exams in the lab.

I am hoping and praying that I get off the waitlist soon and I even renewed my lease at CT. I am trying my hardest to get a really good GPA this semester and further prove that I deserve to be here. Unfortunately, there were many people who got waitlisted in my class, so I'm not the only one stuck in limbo. However, this is not my first time being on a waitlist, so I was not surprised since it was so late in the cycle. If I do not get in, I plan on retaking the MCAT later this summer, finding a job and reapplying.

@musicmed Did you apply through AACOMAS or does the COB have a special application if you want to link to COM? I hope you get off the waitlist. Being in limbo sucks.

It's not really a thesis but more like a presentation on research topic. I actually just presented today on atrial septal defects and I was the very last person for my class. They split us up into different groups and we met once a week for 2 to 3 hours and listened to 2 to 3 different people present.

Haha I found that last part amusing... *Imagining someone being uncomfortable with numerous dogs around him and being squished in an elevator with dogs.* Has that really happened??? I have a corgi 🙂
 
Hey all, has anyone received the financial aid email that their website talks about? ("Application information will be e-mailed to the student who has paid their initial admissions fees in the spring. Thanks for all the information, I had a question about tests. I understand it'll require us to be proactive in our learning but I was wondering if you used or they gave any additional resources like study guides, old exams, practice questions, etc. Thanks!
