KCUMB COB Discussion 2019-2020

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I looked at their Class of 2017 student Outcome and it seem 73% went on to medical school, 5% employment, 2% doctoral, and 1% professional school. Med school acceptances are scattered out of to AZ, NM, CO, KS, OK, MO, AR, AL, OH, VA and NY. So i guess its safe to assume majority of the people completing the program with good grades are placed somewhere in medical school.

True. Although, i think only about 45% got into KCU med school. I am thinking other masters programs might be safer - VCOM, LECOM, etc.

Where did you find this stat? I'm curious how many of the guaranteed interviews did not get accepted.

Sorry. At this point I cant remember it. Maybe sdn. But I remember reading somewhere that of the 73% going into med school, about 25-30% go into other med schools.

Is it too late to apply for fall 2019?

I don't think so. I do suggest you apply ASAP (Early the better). I couldn't find a deadline for the app, but most masters stay open till April/June.
They also tend to get back fast and some people tend to drop out before the program starts. So you should definitely go for it.

@MicrobeMommy
I got my acceptance!! I am so happy I didnt have to wait months to hear back. I live on the other side of the US though, and this is the first time my parents will have to consider sending me away and paying the fees. I have a few questions that hopefully will help calm their nerves if you can take some time to answer them

1) What is the total cost of tuition? Online it says
2019-2020 Tuition: $33,552 per year

BMS Books and Instruments: $1,342

PsyD Books and Supplies: $2,020

Student Activity Fee: $70

Technology Fee: $150

Are those all included in the 33,552 or is it in addition? I am thinking we disregard the PsyD right?

2) How hard is it to maintain a 3.5 in the class? Aside from working your butt off and making sure you study everywhere, I am just curious how difficult the curriculum and exams are. Any chance you know GPA averages for the class? Are there pop quizzes or anything like that?

3) Can you speak about mentoring and any educational assistance that is available to help us succeed in the program?

4) I've read about the housing online, but any chance you know the average cost of living and/or average apartment fees?

5) This might be stupid question, but the COB program is at Kansas city right, not Joplin? Is the surrounding neighborhood safe? Are there shopping malls, restaurants, and grocery stores that are within 10-20 min?

Thank you so much <3

1) All the additional fees are not included in that tuition number. Don’t worry about the PsyD stuff. Also, I’ve never paid that much for books in this program so don’t expect to have to spend that much.

2) Our class average for last semester was 3.63. If you treat school like a job, you will be fine. The tests are fair, so try not to worry. No pop quizzes. We are aware of all testing and quizzes before they happen.

3) We have a couple of classes that have tutoring (Epidemiology, Molecular and Cell Bio, and Immunology). We have access to an amazing learning specialist named Janelle who is seriously a gift from the heavens. She is super helpful with anything learning related.

4) I can’t really speak to this because I own a house in KCK. My house payment is 800 for a pretty large house. As far as the KCMO side, housing is a bit more expensive. That being said, Kansas City on average is pretty decent for cost of living.

5) The COB program is in Kansas City. The surrounding area is...questionable. It isn’t the safest area. On campus, the security is amazing and we are very safe on campus. The surrounding area, not so much. I know a lot of people who just go a little further off campus to be a little safer. There doesn’t seem to be many stores around the school. I know of an ALDI close to the school, but then again, I don’t live in that area.

Hope this helps!

Congrats to everyone accepted! I was also accepted recently and was wondering if the 3.5GPA first semester with a 501+ MCAT means a guaranteed interview?

There's really nothing on the website confirming this. And does this guaranteed interview basically mean an acceptance as long as you get the stats and don't get in trouble for behavior/professionalism?

I'm wondering and weighing this out to other programs since this program is fairly large and a bit of a risk as well.

For our class, 3.5 and 501 was a guaranteed acceptance. It may change for your class. Guaranteed interview does not mean guaranteed acceptance. Just do the best you can and you will do fine!

Hey. I was wondering if you decided to go to KCUMB. Do you think you would have to retake the MCAT since I keep hearing 501 is MCAT they want. I got 500, not sure if that's a deterrent.

My friend got an interview with a 4.0 and a 500, but it wasn’t guaranteed to her.

Is there any way we can access the upcoming class 2020 academic schedule so we can better plan out our relocation?

It may not be complete yet for orientation. However, based on our schedule last year, I’m guessing orientation will be 7/31-8/2. I just looked on the KCU Academic calendar (found it under COM matriculation requirements) and found out your actual class start date is Monday August 5th. The orientation is usually the three business days before that. Good luck!

Just got the email for accepted student day. Is this like required? Anyone know if a lot or majority of students show up for it?

It isn’t required. Quite a few people show up and bring families to see the school. Quite a few people show up.

I'm from SoCal but most likely won't be attending the event.

If anyone is familiar, does the program offer any sort of MCAT prep at all?

Yes. We were offered an MCAT course (self-paced, online) twice (once in fall and once this spring). It was no cost to us and we got all the necessary books as well.

Does anyone have any advice on finding a roommate? I’ve always lived on my own and put my deposit down for a two bedroom at the century towers but kind of nervous if I don’t find one. The century towers lady I toured with said to not worry about it but it’s not guranteed I’ll find a roommate. Also if anyone is interested DM me!
I’ll let you know if I’m interested by June if you still need one.

Oh wow. Do you know if many students actually decided to take the course? In addition, may I ask what company was it through. I’ve recently been accepted into the program and am currently trying to decide between this and several others.

It is through Kaplan. I’m not sure how many people took it. Maybe half the class or so. That’s just a ballpark.

Just submitted my application to this program! Anybody know the accepted class size or what the turn around time on applications looks like?

Our class has 127 in it, so it won’t be much more than that. They are pretty quick with applications. I think mine took like 2 weeks after it was complete.

Does anyone know how many people from the waitlist actually get in to the program?

Application was complete a few days ago, hoping the class isn't already full judging from all these people on waitlist!

Recently, I called to inquire about the waitlist process. It turns out that they will select the stronger, more desirable candidates first and if they see potential in your application they will place you on a waitlist. Come early May/late June, they will review their waitlist applicants and review the contents of the applicant's file again. They do not place priority based on when you got waitlisted since they will review all applications and then render a decision from there.

I hope this helps!

A previous COB student who ended up going to KCU-COM wrote an amazing blog that has helped me through COB. Her COB experience is under “my master’s experience”. She also has some awesome posts about her first year in COM. This helped me and I hope it’ll help you!

What's the COA? On the website it says 32k/yr. I initially read it as 32k for the whole year, but does that mean per semester (so 64k total)?

It is per year which includes the two semester in the 1 year master's program.

my Loans came back and it seem they’re giving 55k total for the whole year. Tuition plus COA

Yeah that includes the fees and other expenses for the year. At Touro, the COA is roughly the same, approximately $53k.

Where are y’all planning on living? Century? Or towards river market?

CT look too much like dorms for me and I don't mind a 15ish minute commute coming from a big city. I've heard river market, downtown westport, and north of KC like zona rosa are pretty nice.

Yeah that’s what I’m saying. I was look at places in river market. Just seems nice and you can walk to places and don’t have to drive to get food or groceries. Compared to CT there’s like no where to walk to and apparently it’s too sketch to even want to walk anywhere besides school

Just got waitlisted today. Been rejected from a few SMP's so really keeping my fingers crossed on this one. Anybody know when to expect movement, updates, or even how good chances of waitlist are?

I’m contemplating this program with another one which is new but really cheap and the linkage based on the interview is pretty strong so i might take it and drop this program

I’m attending this fall but i need to retake my mcat so I am above the cut off. I’m wondering if I should apply right now to the medical school and state that I’m retaking the mcat or just wait until i retake the mcat and then apply? I heard they don’t look at your application until after first semester anyway.

I assume you are taking the MCAT before school starts which would mean no later than late July. I'd imagine this should be ok since, like you said, they don't officially look at your application until after the first semester. I believe some people may have even taken it during the winter break but don't quote me on that. I assume as long as you say when you are scheduled to take the MCAT on your app it should be ok.

If you mean you are applying to KCU, they will hold your application no matter when you apply until after first semester. Most other med schools will put your application on hold until after first semester grades as well as long as you make them aware grades are coming. If not, you run the risk of an outright rejection if your grades aren’t stellar and you need those first semester grades.
