Like many tales, this all starts on a dark and ominous night.

The circus had been struggling a bit recently. Attendance was down and the tensions were high in management. The feeling had pervaded the entire group... the animals were restless in their cages, the sideshow's often drunken banter was quieted, and even the Fattest Lady Alive had started eating less in preparation for scarcity.

So when the ringmaster was found in the middle of his ring this dark and stormy night... his skull firmly crushed in... nobody was particularly surprised. Something evil, something dark, maybe a bit chaotic, had been lurking in the group, and look. It had finally struck.

The only thing left was to figure out who it was.

It is now Day 1, and there are 23 performers remaining. We will begin on a long day cycle - lynch will close at 9PM EST tomorrow (12/17).

RULES:
  1. If your role description or chat title does not say otherwise, you are a villager.
  2. You may only PM through mod-created conversations. This means that most communication must occur on the main thread. Obviously you may talk to your mentor(s) at any time. 🙂
  3. No screenshots.
  4. You may edit typos, but not the content of posts. Think before you speak, especially if you are scum.
  5. If there is a really overwhelming majority and almost everyone seems to have voted/defended, lynch may close early... but generally night/lynch deadlines will be 7AM/9PM EST. No plurality rules. We can move this forward or back if there is demand, and I promise to try my best to keep people up to speed if I will be early/late.
  6. This is just a suggestion, but I'd love if you changed your avatar to something circus-y! Make it festive in here.
  7. Mentors, please post inside smilie faces per Child's Play rules.
  8. If you die, you MUST STOP ANY STRATEGIC POSTING. No PMs, no posts on the thread with info, etc. A "go villagers!" is okay, but if you think that it may be something that impacts the game in any way going forward... don't say it. After you are dead, your posts should be in stars:
******I am dead. I has a sadz 🙁******
Most importantly, though... have fun! Participate. Ask questions, try new things, enjoy yourselves. WW is a fantastic time, and I'm excited to welcome a new group to my favourite addiction.

I honestly still don't even know how to post gifs here, so I just feel like I have nothing to contribute 🙁

If you're on the computer, click to copy image address from the GIF you want insert. On the SDN hatbox, click on what looks like a landscape button (mountain w/sun silhouette), then paste the image address into the field that appears. Sometimes this will still fail if the GIF is too large or if you put too many images in one post.

Also, I'll quote some advice from the Child's Play game - when in doubt, discuss possible game/theme mechanics.

Just some thoughts but is there maybe a chaos player in addition to wolves? The write-up said something maybe a bit chaotic is lurking in the group. Also how many wolves are we looking for? What are people's thoughts?

I would speculate maybe 4-5 wolves with the number of players, maybe fewer to start out with and conversion later? was anything ever said about this game not having any conversions?

I definitely agree with there likely being a chaos roll based on the writeup as well.

I'm no expert when it comes to game balancing, but guessing no more than a total of 4 wolves. And maybe room for 1 chaos? That'd be ~20% non-village players.

guys. I wrote roll instead of role. I'm not editting it because it made me laugh, but it's proof of what finals has done to my brain.

No worries, both spellings are used here 😀

From what I've read, the n00b games are kept relatively basic/straight forward, so I don't think there will be any conversions. Somewhere in the 3-5 range seems reasonable.

I realized a little bit ago that I'd had my underwear on inside out all day... 😳 It's been a long semester.

On-topic, I have no idea what we're supposed to be doing since I've been too busy studying for finals to read through any past games. Do we just arbitrarily pick someone to lynch?

From what I've seen, the 1st lynch is pretty random because there isn't much info to go off of

After (very) briefly skimming the other noob thread (like one page, tbh) it seems we guess as to what roles might actually be wolves? And that there have been actual animals (i.e. dogs) as roles in previous games.

So like, circus. Maybe some rogue circus animals?!

Noob-grasping at straws here hahaha

This is where I feel wolves win too often these days not necessarily because of imbalanced games, but because village has forgotten how to interrogate and find wolves based on inaccuracies and insincerity in posting. You can't rely on waiting for so called "solid" info. Use your wits and intuition to hunt.

Q. Was the deceased ringmaster an actual "human being" ... or some type of animal, bird, fish, reptile, whatever?

Q. How was the ringmaster's skull crushed - do we know or does it matter at this time (e.g., blunt force, constriction, etc.)?

I think at this point, we don't have any information more than is in the original post.

I can't really think of what circus creatures would be considered evil by nature? maybe clowns?

I'm guessing it was a human.

I'm not sure if any information will come out of this death. As it was a random side NPC that died rather than one of us.

The problem is that if you're too open about your role it can make the wolves target you. I'm only a couple pages into an old noob game, myself, so I'm not entirely sure how or why. I just know people didn't want to reveal too much early on.

Role wise, I have really only thought about clowns, animals, and the classic circus "freaks." But I'm not sure any of those are inherently bad. Any others you guys have thought of?

because if you have a role with an ability (one that can identify/kill wolves) the wolves want to kill you before you have the chance to out them to the village

Look, I actually changed my avatar! I realized I'm way too incompetent to give my kitty a clown nose, and no one else had gone for the Britney Spears reference. 😛

animal trainers. Like, maybe someone who works with elephants. That would explain the ringmaster's crushed skull.
🤔

"What" or "who" would kill the ringmaster ... and "what" would be his/her/its motive, if any?

For that reason, I'd still like to know the cause of the ringmaster's death (blunt force, constriction, etc.). Will the cause of death ever be revealed?
the ringmaster his skull firmly crushed in

Yes ... "skull firmly crushed in" ... but what "means/method" was used to firmly crush the ringmaster's skull?

If we identify the actual means/method of death, it might be a clue about the killer's identity, eh?

Motive?

I think the motive is that the murderer was unhappy with the circus' current financial situation, so now they're going on a killing spree starting with one of the most important performers.

@Animal Midwife, that's a good hypothesis and sounds logical. Hmmm ... or, conversely, did someone kill (or direct the killing of) the ringmaster as a "get even" vendetta (e.g., a circus performer was "let go" from the circus payroll due to the circus' financial problems)?

Maybe, but if the circus isn't doing well, why make it worse by killing the ringmaster? I think the financial situation is key- maybe someone who wants to take the ringmaster's spot/thinks they can do better.

I agree, crushing someone's skull is a strange way to kill them. Maybe it was a large animal?

It's possible. But our wolves may not all be human. I bet there's a couple animal roles in the game (not necessarily as wolves).
