I just emailed Geraldine (?) last night about the late applications. Does anyone know about the whole late application process and if it is still even available? Can anyone fwd me their email if possible? I am very interested and I dont know if I can wait till Monday to find out about Edinburgh!

Email: [email protected]

You would think that applying to vet school would make me more of a patient person but I fear it may have done the opposite!

I originally emailed Geraldine and didn't hear back from her for a day or two, so i just emailed her back a scanned copy of my transcript, resume, one LOR and a personal statement. She emailed me back in 2-3 days with the conditional offer!

She will explain in the email the next steps - to fill out the formal app, have your transcripts mailed in, send another LOR, etc.

It was the easiest process and they are extremely responsive on the decisions. I would recommend sending all of your stuff asap. Feel free to PM me if you have any more questions.

Good Luck!! :luck:

Thanks so much for all these info everyone! I just emailed Geraldine with the necessary documents and I'm waiting anxiously for her reply 😀

I agree that they must be turning a blind eye to a few things because I was offered a spot in the four year with only a year of gen chem and year of organic, and I know that people who applied regularly with similar got the five year. But YAY!
And the turn around for their decision is super fast,so look for a reply maybe three days after you submit depending on the time difference.

Good luck everyone!!:luck:

I think a year of gen chem and year of orgo is what is normally required anyway. I applied last fall with the same, plus a semester of biochem (which I don't think they require) and was accepted to the 4 yr. program as well. So I don't think that was an oversight of some sort...

i don't think many vet schools require more chemistry than that anyway, except for some that require/recommend some biochemistry.

Congratulations! I would not by any means say they are turning a blind eye. I have more chemistry than that, applied late and got the 5 year. The fact that the turn around is so fast would appear to suggest they are very committed to this matter. For whatever reason they are accepting late apps, i am most appreciative.

Best of Luck to all that are applying!

flyhi, are you going to choose Europe over the Caribbean? 🙂

I believe so, but i'm taking opinions/advice over on another thread "Edinburgh v SGU", so please post yours over there 😀. I'm getting a landslide vote at this point, but there are pros and cons to each, so i'm anxious to hear what you think.

Well, since I know exactly nothing about either school (other than their locations, haha) not sure how helpful I'd be! I was just being nosey 🙂 Good luck!

Ha! Fair enough. The biggest difference is that Edinburgh is AVMA accredited, whereas SGU is not. Another large difference for me, is that I was accepted into the 5 year program at UofE, not the 4 year. Is is very hard to compare the two, as they are at two ends of the spectrum, thus the overwhelming response that i should choose Edinburgh. I have been told UofE is now ranked #1 in the UK for research and they have absolutely amazing new vet facilities that are supposed to be completed next year. There really are such large differences, that it actually makes the decsion easier. Plus, who doesn't want to be a Dick Vet? 😀

Oh yeah, the weather is pretty different too

For those of you that are applying/have applied for the late application.. How long did it take Geraldine to Email you back? I emailed her yesterday and I am awaiting an email today. I know it is 2:45am here in Socal but its like 11am or something in Scotland. I would REALLLY like to apply and I am scared shes never going to email me back. lol....

Also...

I am debating whether not I should go to Edinburgh (if I can hopefully apply and more hopefully get in:luck:) or stick around the states and give U.S. another try. I am an alternate at Western but I am not holding my breath... I honestly dont know if I would like to wait around for another year for more heartbreaking blows below the belt... ( I am a girl but you know what i mean 😳)
I know there are many non trads on SDN that would probably tell me to quit my whining but i am somewhat non-trad. I am going to be 25 in Sept and receiving my BS either this spring or next spring depending on if I get into vet school. I feel as though time is of the essence...
What are the pros/cons of attending an international vet school ... more specifically Edinburgh?
I would very much like to hear / appreciate you guys' inputs and opinions and thank you very much in advance. 🙂

It really depends if you are attending an in-state or out-of-state school in the US. If you get into an in-state vet school then it will be much cheaper compared with Edinburgh. However if you get into an out-of-state school then the only cons will be moving to another country and leaving your friends and family. The tuition internationally is comparable to tuition for an out-of-state vet student. Education wise Edinburgh is a well established program that is accredited in the US. Edinburgh has a 5 year program and a accelerated 4 year program so that is something to keep in mind as well.

I know what you mean about waiting......I've been refreshing my mailbox the entire day.

She emailed me back!! I am so excited! I would get started on this right away but I have a midterm then a project to deal with today... Heres an excerpt...

The attached information mentions details on how to apply. However, as the
deadline has now passed, in order for us to assess your eligibility for the
5-year and the 4-year programmes here at Edinburgh, it would be very helpful
to us if you could provide the following information prior to making a
formal application (details of which I will send to you separately):

1. an up-to-date cv detailing your educational background including
subjects/modules and grades

2. academic reference/letter of recommendation from a current academic tutor

3. personal statement as to why you wish to study veterinary medicine
including details of all relevant work experience undertaken

4. official or certified copies of transcripts

i dont know how far along the rest of you are in this process but I have a couple of questions that I would prefer not to email/ask her because I dont want to sound like an utter idiot.

1. CV: Can I just use the one I sent into western?
2. LOR: All of the ppl who wrote my LOR's this past cycle sent me the letters in the email. Can I just attach this to an email? Or do I have to have them resend it to them?
3. PS: Did you guys just send the same PS that you used?
4. This is my main question... Getting official transcripts at my school takes about 10 working days. Is it possible for me to email them copies of my unofficial? Scan them my unofficial? I know this probably sounds really dumb but I usually have dumb questions. haha:laugh:

Sorry everyone.. I realize that you guys arent the adcom for Edinburgh but i figure it cant hurt to ask you guys before I risk looking like an idiot and asking them.

Again ... Thanks so much in advance! (and thanks darrenn for the info!)

1. Send her your most recent CV, just take out any reference to Western.

2. Yes, send your LOR's as an email attachment. If accepted, they will ask for originals.

3. Yes. Update it for Edinburgh

4. Yes. Email her a copy of your transcript. If accepted, your offer will be conditional on sending them originals.

Now, get busy and get your stuff in!!! GOOD LUCK!

Has anyone been able to determine WHY Edinburgh is so eager to fill spots for this fall? I was accepted through the late application and I am beyond happy to have a place, but also wondering if I should be worried.

Any current Edinburgh students have thoughts on this? Are they expanding the class size?

Hey flyhi thanks for the information!! For the LOR's is it okay if its from me? like do i have to ask my teacher to email it to them?
and for the transcript... do you think its okay if its in word format? I feel uncomfy doin that considerin you can change the grades... ( I copy pasted my unofficial from online).

Yes, the LOR can come from you, BUT you will have to send an official one. I just emailed her the Word LOR that my guy sent me for my records. It was on letterhead. I will now have him print it out, execute and send via post to Geraldine.

The transcript.....not sure about that one. I guess it's better than nothing. Plus, your offer would be conditional on them receiving the official copy. Can you at least PDF it first? Or, print out your online version and then scan it back into your computer as a PDF? Either way, i'm sure it will be fine.

GOOD LUCK and let us know!

Why would you be worried? You could always ask Geraldine and let us all know 😀

Yeah, go ahead and ask. But, I think it is because they are trying to increase the number of full fee paying students. If you noticed on the announcement on the website, the late app is only open to GRADUATES. The UK only subsidizes students' 1st degree, so those that are graduates are also full fee paying. It's not something to worry about. Sheesh, I'm getting tired of explaining that the quality of education at Edinburgh is nothing less than here. Does AVMA accreditation mean nothing anymore?

Didn't mean to offend anybody. I am well aware of Edinburgh's renown, both as a research institution and as a vet school. There are a thousand reasons I would love to go there. they are accredited by AVMA as well as European veterinary association, so Dick Vets can practice just about anywhere in the world! I am living in France now and I can tell you that Edinburgh has a very good reputation in the vet community here.

I actually didn't apply last fall because I thought it was out of my league, and I feel deeply honored to have a place in the incoming class!

I was simply surprised that they are accepting people so quickly - within days of sending application materials to the admissions office - as if they aren't being very selective. But hey, I can't complain, I'm going to be a Dick Vet (as long as I get approved for loans and visa eek)!

Hopeful, it makes sense that they would want to expand on the number of full-fee students. They have some major building projects in the works and probably need the extra money.

Sorry youki, no offense taken.
They're probably accepting people so quickly because they need to fill their class and the sooner they let people know, the more time they have to prepare for enrolling. The UK government doesn't offer the large amount of loans that most of us generally borrow to pay for professional school (because most of them do vet school as a 1st, subsidized degree). I think fewer UK grads choose to apply to Edinburgh because its fees are higher than the other UK vet schools. Accepting students now is a bit unconventional, but nothing to be concerned about I'd say.

Hello,

I e-mailed Geraldine and I am waiting for an e-mail back. I'm in Alaska so 3pm my time is 12am Scotland time so I'll be waiting for a few days I'm assuming.
I have never assembled a CV and was wondering the format that is generally acceptable.
Also, those who have sent in their documents to edinburgh for this late application, do you scan them and attach them to an e-mail document?
Should they be in PDF format?
Any help you could give me I would really appreciate, its last minute I know and I have finals this week that I'm cramming for, but this is a very enticing diversion and getting in this September would be fantastic!
Thanks

I had another question about the letter of recommendation to be sent with the CV and personal statement and transcripts. Does the letter have to be from an academic tutor, or can I used one from a veterinarian that I work for. I only have letters from veterinarians, and I think asking a teacher to write me a letter under such short notice would be quite inconsiderate, especially during finals. I guess I can ask Geraldine if she e-mails me back, but if anyone knows, let me know😉

Mine was not from a teacher, so you should be fine. Just send your stuff in....they will tell you if they need anything else. Good Luck! :luck:

I just got an email from Geraldine and I was offered a spot in the 4 year program 🙂🙂🙂🙂

Thanks to the original poster for letting us know about the acceptance of late apps! Love you!!! 😍😍😍

CONGRATULATIONS!!!! Are you definitely going?

I'm not sure yet......I went from 4 rejections to being accepted by PEI, MSU, and Edinburgh. Still waiting for Melbourne and Massey. I don't know what to do right now honestly. My parents want me to go to MSU because Taiwanese have this mentality that an education in the States is much better. I studied in the states for my undergrad so I kinda want to go to a new country and experience something new. Decisions...decisions...:scared:

LOL. typical asian parents (Im korean). How long did it take between you sending Geraldine and email with your information (transcripts, cv, etc) and your acceptance?

btw CONGRATULATIONS!

Does anyone know how many minorities are at Edinburgh? I definitely not racist or anything but I would also not want to be the "token asian". LOL:laugh::laugh:

I sent my app out on Monday...so it took about four days. I hear that there are plenty of international students at Edinburgh can anyone confirm that?

I believe I read somewhere or was told that approximately 30 of Edinburgh's 120 spots every year are for international students.

And now I can add my name to the list of Edinburgh acceptances! I have been accepted to the 4 year program and they want me to gain 2 weeks of experience in mixed/large animal veterinary medicine and 2 weeks in farm/equine. Anyone know where I could get these experiences in Orlando and or Miami, FL??

CONGRATS! I'm so happy for everyone

I'm applying tonight. Wish me luck!:xf:

PS..would anyone mind listing stats so I know what they are looking for?

Congrats turtle lover!! That's very exciting.

Are you def planning on going? I am still holding out hope you'll be joining me at Western! 🙂

They told me the same thing! I have ridden horses my entire life, and spent three summers with equine vets. I haven't worked with cows at all, so I'm guessing that's what they meant. I wonder if it's something they say to everyone. I don't think there are all that many cows near me though. I don't think it's going to happen....

TurtleLover, are you definitely going to Dick? I scheduled a trip to go see it next week. I have to decide between that and Kansas.

Congrats TurtleLover!! Are you going if it comes down between SMU and UofE? Check your email, but i believe the experience is only 'recommended' and not required at this point. You will get plenty of experience in your EMS.

Great job!

So I was accepted to the 5-year programme during the initial cycle, and decided that it's better for me to go to a 4-year program in the States than to spend the extra money in tuition. Never could write the email declining the offer, though. So, I wrote to Geraldine and Yvonne a few days ago requesting that they take a closer look at my chemistry coursework (the reason they gave for my not being accepted to GEP) to see if maybe I could qualify for GEP. 5-year versus 4-year will likely make or break my decision. As of now, I'm going to Tufts. I will keep you all posted!

I still haven't decided yet. I'm kinda in the same boat as some others. I am also holding out hope for Western and LSU (although I'm getting less hopeful for Western now knowing the whole 6 people left thing) I know it sounds stupid to turn down an AVMA accredited school for one that's not AVMA accredited, but here are some things I'm considering:

SMU has small class sizes and I feel less intimidated and more likely to ask questions and learn more in small classes. (literally the whole class is 20-30 students)

SMU has the turtle farm I can volunteer at

SMU has the dual degree DVM/MPH (federal loans)

Does anyone know if there's a good exotics program at Edinburgh?

I really need to do more research to make a better informed decision. If anyone has anymore information they know about the school, please let me know, or where to find it.

Thanks 😀

turtle lover.. did it take about 4 days to get back to you also? I sent my "unofficial" application in at about 2 in the morning today (what is that like... 10 or 11am in Scotland?).. Im nervous! I am really hoping to get into the 4 year program:xf:

Do you guys know what they look for as far as 5 yr vs 4 yr? Any info would be greatly appreciated.

oh BTW CONGRATULATIONs turtle lover!!

It should take around 4 days so expect a reply next week (they don't send out a confirmation that they have received your email). I think the 5yr vs. 4yr is decided by the classes you have taken and nothing else.

I believe they look into more than just the classes you have taken. I have a lot of chemistry and biology, but got accepted to the 5 year. I believe that the 3.4 cutoff is for the GEP, but could be wrong. I got a sense of that from somewhere on their website. My degree is from a long time ago, which i feel played a factor as well.

DollyLlama - I am surprised didn't get accepted into the GEP, so it will be interesting to see what they have to say....let us know!

TurtleLover - i have seen quite a bit about exotics on their website. At least more than i expected from a school in Scotland 😛. In your acceptance email, there should be a link to a website for students with an offer. There are the archived Dick Vet News found there. I read through the two most recent publications and recall reading something about exotics. Remember too, you end up having to do 12 weeks pre-clinical EMS and 26 weeks clinical EMS - this would be a great opportunity for you to 'specialize' and do some exotic work and/or research. Just one more thing to think about 😀.

Also, I would research the MPH option at SMU and the whole loan deal - it sounded like it was an additional 20k or so in overall tuition and you were eligible for just a small portion of fed loans. Plus, it was all online, which i wasn't personally a fan of. Just something to check into. In the end, i'm sure you will pick what is right for you.

Yea, it took about 4 days, but don't forget it is the weekend coming up, so it might take a bit longer. Once I got all of the information in to her though, it only took 2 days to get an offer.

Thanks Flyhi, I'll look into that

I'm applying tonight. Wish me luck!:xf:

PS..would anyone mind listing stats so I know what they are looking for?

Good luck! I gained admission to the GEP as a sophomore with a 3.9 CGPA and approx. 20000+ (conservative estimate) hours mixed animal practice, and 2500+ hours horse farm experience. Conditions were that I gain at least a "B" in both Genetics and Micro, which I just finished last week - still waiting for marks to come out but should have an A- at least in both.

Check your email, but i believe the experience is only 'recommended' and not required at this point. You will get plenty of experience in your EMS.

I'm not positive if the recommended experience counts or not, but I know it is possible to gain EMS credit (for up to 6 or 8 weeks iirc) for animal experience prior to actually going.

Does anyone know if there's a good exotics program at Edinburgh?

Not sure about how the exotics program stacks up to other schools, but remember the world famous Edinburgh Zoo is nearby. A friend of a friend managed to get some hours working there (not positive if it was EMS or just volunteering on her own) and really enjoyed the penguins.

no update yet so gotta wait til next week (and here i thought the waiting part of the cycle was over!) 🙂

HA! Got me. Had to check. I noticed on Geraldine's email signature, that she is the Undergraduate Admissions Officer (Mon-Thurs). Maybe she is either off or in a different department on Fridays.

Let us know when ya hear 👍

Hello, congrats on getting in!!! I am getting my stuff together this weekend to send to Geraldine on Sunday so she will get it when she is back in the office. Can you give me any pointers on assembling the curriculum vitae? I put one together, but it looks very odd to me. Is it supposed to be basically a resume with work/school and then your classes listed with grades? I went to a few websites for some pointers but nothing really seemed to be what I was looking for. HELP!!! lol -Thanks

Hey guys,

Got all my stuff in already, just waiting on the reply (on pins and needles). :xf:I will have my phone (yay for email access) near me at all times in the coming days, weeks etc until I hear back. I wonder how many late applicants they are accepting.
