FSUJD said:drhenPharmD said:FSUJD said:Hey Henry,
I just got accepted into LECOM-B and Nova. I have until Nov. 24th to put down my deposit for Nova, and a little after that for LECOM-B. I am completely stuck on which school would be better for me.
I love the small/laid-back area of Bradenton, but the only thing that worries me is the smaller amount of rotation sites and no residency programs compared to Nova. There are many pluses for each program, and I am just trying to figure out the best choice for me.
I will probably make one more trip down to both Bradenton and Palm Beach Gardens (Nova's satellite campus) just to get a better feel for each area, but if you could offer ANY insight about the Bradenton area, the pluses and minuses of LECOM-B, and anything else you can think of I would GREATLY appreciate it!!
Thanks a lot!
First, I recommend that you try to come up with some objective measures and arrive at a decision analytically.
Having said that, I am not sure what Nova has to offer in terms of rotation sites. I did not apply to Nova and honestly never heard of that school prior to moving to FL. I can tell you, however, that in California (where I'm from) LECOM is fairly well known among pre-pharmers. I can also tell you that LECOM has a great variety of high quality rotation sites. We have sites all over FL, and several out of state. We also have plenty of sites in the Lee Memorial hospital system in Fort Lauderdale where I know preceptors prefer LECOM-bradenton students over Nova students.
Yes, we do not offer any residencies. But I don't understand why that is an area of concern. Never in the history of pharmacy residencies has a residency director ever given preference to an applicant because their alma mater offered residencies. Unless you are planning on doing a residency at Nova, I seriously doubt that there will be any disadvantages for you becoming a resident at say the Mayo Clinic, St. Jude's, Mass gen. etc... LECOM-B highly emphasizes clinical practice, consequently, a large portion of the Class of 2011 will be completing at least a PGY1.
My personal opinion is that the faculty, staff, students, rotation sites, tuition, reputation, network, location, atmosphere, and on-campus organizations are all amazing. It's the reason I chose LECOM-B over other schools. The only minus I can think of is that people sometimes confuse LECOM -Bradenton for LECOM-Erie or think we are a satellite campus.
I hope this helps. Let me know if you have any further questions. Good luck with your decision.
I really appreciate all of your insight and advice!
I was already leaning towards LECOM-B over Nova, but I think I just needed to be re-assured that I was making the right choice. I had previously listed all of the pros and cons of each school, and LECOM had easily won in every category except for post-grad residency programs. As of now, I would really like to go in to clinical, compounding, or nuclear pharmacy. I'm almost positive that each of these areas require a 1 or 2 year residency, correct? I will admit that I am not 100% sure how the residency programs work and how/where you go for these programs. Do you have any personal insight as to how these residency programs work (where/how you apply, are there any residency programs in the Tampa/Sarasota/Bradenton area, etc...)?
Again, I really appreciate all of your help! If the rest of the student-body is as helpful as you, then I have a lot to look forward to at LECOM!
I got my official acceptance letter in the mail today! 😀
But I don't get it. What's this deal about an alcohol screening? I get the drug test.
Although let me tell you, sounds pricey to have a drug test administered by the Doctor... I'm sure my office will not know how to bill for that, and charge me somewhere in the hundreds.
Congratulations on getting the letter!
Your doctor's office will not charge you in the hundreds for an alcohol screening. I did both my drug test and the alcohol screening together at a clinic, and it was done from A to Z by a technician. I don't remember specifics, but I will ask my classmates and admissions and get back to you soon.
Your salary should also transfer if you work for a big chain. And it should go up after you get your intern license, unless you make over 15 or 16 dollars an hour already.
You will definitely get used to the dress code. All in all, I think all the pesky polices, rules and regulations give us a real edge over other students. We also get a 10 minute break every 50 minutes (there's no walking around to get to another class so 10 minutes is quite long). But some rules, like not having water in the lecture hall, we are still trying to change.
Thank you! Thats awesome. I hope everything works out. I'm going to see if my district managers or the intern coordinator here has any connections down by the school. I work for CVS.
Also, can you get the FL state intern license before you actually start your first year? How does that work? I have the application for it, but I'm a little confused to when you can actually get it.
To be a clinical pharmacist you have to complete a minimum of a 1st year general residency (PGY1). It is not required, but it will be in the very near future. If you want to specialize in cardiology, infectious disease, oncology/hematology, obe-gyn, pediatrics, etc... you must complete a 2nd year specialized residency (PGY2).
To my knowledge, compounding pharmacists do not generally complete a residency. However, in the near future a board certification in compounding may be available for pharmDs.
Also to my knowledge, nuclear pharmacists do not generally complete a residency though I think the trend is that more and more people are doing at least a PGY1. There is a very helpful thread on this forum about nuclear pharmacy (A day in the life of a nuclear pharmacist), it will give you much more insight into the field.
The accreditation of all pharmacy residencies are handled by the American Society of Health-system Pharmacists (ASHP). This organization also holds an annual convention where every residency applicant in the country needs to attend to be considered for residency. Residency directors from 99% of all hospitals and university institutions in the country will be there conducting initial interviews on the spot. I think this is the only way to apply for a residency, but I may be mistaken.
This is a very simplified explanation of the application process and residencies in general. If you would like more information, I would be more than happy to answer questions or direct your questions to current PGY1s and PGY2s. You can also visit www.ASHP.org for more information.
And, there are plenty of programs in FL, many are in Tampa. I don't think there are any in the Sarasota/Bradenton area, but I may be mistaken.
Best,
Henry
Congratulations on getting the letter!

Yes, several people did.
Hi Henry, I'm also having a hard time choosing schools. I got accepted to LECOM-B and MWU-AZ. I love the area in Bradenton and the people I have met there so far, but I'm really concerned with the rotation sites they can offer. I asked my interviewer if I can do rotation outside FL and she said most likely no for APPE. Since you said in your previous post that there can be rotation sites out of FL, and you are also from California, have you tried to request rotation sites anywhere in CA for your APPE and did they agree?
I got mine too! yay~ anyway. i have a question on the housing. Where and How should I start?
First, I just want to clarify for those that may not know. IPPEs are the intermediate pharmacy practice experiences that are completed from July to October of your 2nd year. APPEs are the advanced pharmacy practice experiences that are completed throughout the entire 4th year. IPPEs must be done in either Pennsylvania or Florida. APPEs can potentiallybe done anywhere in the U.S.
From what I've seen, connections take a back seat to contacting the intern coordinator early. The intern coordinator here for CVS is Jamie Magnano. You can contact her at [email protected] or call her at (727) 539-9170.
You cannot get your intern license early. LECOM-Bradenton sends out everyone's intern application as a batch after school starts. You will get your intern license around October/November.
Got an Interview Invite! 😀
Anyone else interviewing 11/23 @ 7:45 AM?? 😴
How many of you who got in also got into another school and will attend the other school instead of LECOM?
How many of you who got in have applied to other schools and will attend them if accepted? (UF doesn't go through their applications until January, so I'm guessing that's when people start giving up their seats at LECOM??)
got my letter of acceptance last Monday 😀Sorry, but I'm going to LECOM-B, unless the off chance in january I get accepted to LIU in Brooklyn... But I think it's time for me to enjoy year round summer 😀
Anyone remember the names of the apartment complexes they recommended to us in the presentation. I can only remember the one name, The Yacht Club. Does anyone remember the other 3?
