I understand the nervousness too. I'm SO PUMPED THOUGH! We just sold our house for a great price and we don't have anywhere to move quite yet.

Anyone else going into the PCSP? I just heard from Tara, the Admin Assist on that and she said there are 19 who are interested and we are all going to be considered. At week 10 we'll know if we're in. It sounds so sweet!

All 19? Then why'd they force us to go to that interview day back in April? They said they'd be choosing 12. Of course they also said we could do our residency in the Cleveland/Erie/Pittsburgh area and now seem to be saying it's Erie only. If that's the case, I'm out. Anyone else know if the residency must be in Erie or not?

Mies,
I think it is Erie only. I will find out. I think I may just continue LDP. You lose all your electives in PCSP which I think even for a Primary Care Physician is still something that is needed. IMHO, they should of incorporated electives on a shorter time scale.

Are girls allowed to wear dressy blouses that are sleeveless/tank tops? They aren't listed on the dress code as a can or can not wear, so I figured I'd ask.

you can't wear tank tops. they are technically "spaghetti strapped"and can't be worn. you can, however, use them as a layering piece just as long as you don't wear a tank top solo.
sorry to break the not so fun news.

They actually were going to get us all back, but then they decided aparently that they could interview the other twelve of us the first week and they are gearing up for that. I've been keeping tabs with Tara the new admin assistant for the program.

So the rest of us will be interviewed too, just like you were.

Talking to Tara, it does seem like all the rotations will be very close to Erie or the area, though I think one is in Cleveland too. So I just think it wont be farther than that. If you look on the new website, they have this QT video of one of the presentations and the specifically mention a hospital in Cleveland, if I remember.

They are still trying to get mentors for each of the 6 people, they want them to be different from those they already use for the LECOM program anyway to give the 6 more exposure to more people.

What I think is nice is that you're in clinic by week 15, with a physician, which I think is unique to that compared to lecture or PBL.

All 19 of us will be sitting candidates and at week 10 they will choose and then by week 12 we're on our way on a new path way that is a mix of independent study and PBL, from what I've been told.

Tara is very willing to share info, if you have questions, so you can email her from the one she sent out today.

count me in on the nervousness....I feel like a 1st grader who is all anxious on the start of school and the rundown. Not to mention the wonderful supplies!

I just had a nightmare that I failed out after 3 days and had to get a job as an air traffic controller.

Though if I were smart, I'd be an ATC to begin with. What a sweet job. Didn't learn about that one until after I'd put down a deposit for LECOM.

I'd say that's a pretty good backup in case we fail out.

According to federal law, you must be no older than 31 years of age to begin ATC training. I'm out. Looks like it's medicine or bust for me.

That's a very interesting and random fact.... please tell me you had to look that up.... 😉

What about flight attendant? We could all travel the world.... 😛

What about flight attendant? We could all travel the world.... 😛

Flight attendant is a terrible job. I come from a family of pilots and people in aviation...it's bad.

Well, let's hope that none of us end up on the LECOM-ATC pathway!

Is Time-Warner Cable the only internet option? I'd rather not get $44/mth internet. DSL would be fine with me, but I can't find any providers.

I found it about half way down the page on be an ATC. Flight attendant might be O.K., but 10 months of flight school in Florida could land you a gig as a pilot. I'd rather do that.

The cheapest alcohol test is actually a breathalzer if you can find a local place that has one. The occupational health place in Erie has one, so you can just do it when you get here if you want.

Make sure that you keep copies of everything, because my alcohol test got lost hence my knowing about the breathalizer.

I just went to LabCorb, they took some blood, and that's all I know.

I'd have no reason to fail either test, so I'll assume everything is fine. Unless them using an alcohol swab makes results weird, like someone said above...

So I had my physical and everything a few weeks ago, got my fingerprinting done, went on vacation and moved to Erie. Now I have just found out:

1. For some reason, LabCorp ONLY did my titers 😡. They somehow ignored my urine sample, and did not do my drug panel on that, nor my alcohol screening on my blood. It took foreverrrrrrrrrr to pee in a cup, and now do I have to do it again?? Can I get drug panel AND alcohol done through bloodwork?? Please?? I'm in Erie now and can't go to my doctor again, obviously.

2. I got an envelope in the mail from the police, expecting it to me my clear background report. Instead it has a great letter saying "sorry your fingerprints are smudged and we cannot find your ridge prints you have to come back and get them redone". Except now I am in ERIE and I have to get the background report from MD. Does anyone know if I can just get fingerprinted in Erie and sent it to MD, like my old ones were??? AND, they included the fingerprint card and they do not look smudged at all to me. That was also my 4th attempt at getting fingerprinting, because no police dept in MD apparently knows how to get fingerprinting done. First I got lost trying to get to the place, called the # and was on hold for over 30 mins before I gave up, and the police station I ended up at couldn't give me directions either. This is a long drive from my house into the ghetto btw. The great thing is that there is only ONE POLICE STATION that has cards AND does fingerprinting. The one I ended up with has fingerprint cards, but no fingerprinting service. So they gave me cards and I later drove to the one near my house who does fingerprinting. Except apparently they gave me "felony fingerprint cards" so the policewoman said if they used them on me it would go into the database that I was a felon. So I had to drive back to the place I originally got lost it, turns out its in a MALL 🙂confused🙂 with no outside signs. So I went there like 2 days before I went on vacation and there was a 4 hour wait. So I stood in a line for an hour solely to get the card, to then drive back to the place by my house to get fingerprinted. Then this happens!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Which I'm assuming happened because the lady that did my fingerprints did them at warp speed and obviously messed them up.

Sorry for the essay, I'm so annoyed at people's incompetence!!!

Help 🙁

Wow, that's bad luck. I would be angry too! I have a question though to others... My doc just gave me a physical and said I was ok. The only labwork i had done was on my urine for the drug panel and my blood for the titers. Do I need lab work with my physical ie. cholesterol levels and basic blood work? Because I have to go back if I do, ANYONE on here know? Melissa Watkins is on vacation so I couldn't ask her. Thanks for any help.

LisaMD, does Maryland require fingerprints for background checks? LECOM doesn't. I just called the security director at LECOM to make sure.

krbirc03, The lab work is just for titers and drug screen.

Wow, that sucks.
Check to make sure you really need the fingerprints. I did my background check online, printed it off and mailed. it took about 10 minutes. Of course, I'm from Indiana.

The lab did the same thing to me. You have to be clear that it is a 10 panel drug AND alcohol screen. I actually looked up the right test in the book and made them do it.

Uhhh...no, you don't need cholesterol info or any of that stuff.

Same in Texas... no fingerprints needed. LisaMD, check your state's DPS site for a form you can just mail in. It can take several weeks, so maybe call LECOM and let them know you're working on it. Sorry for all the hassle... that sucks🙁

This is what I found online:
Individual State Background Check (For example; Visas, Gold Seal letters, and Individual Reviews):

If you live within Maryland:

* You may go to your local law enforcement agency to be fingerprinted on the state fingerprint card known as Form 011.
* Once you've been fingerprinted, you may overnight it to CJIS-Central Repository located at 6776 Reisterstown Road, Suite 102, Baltimore Maryland 21215, or mail it to CJIS-CR P.O. Box 32708, Pikesville, Maryland, 21282-2708. (see Associated Fees below).

So do I have to do another blood AND urine or can they do the alcohol and drug tests through my blood alone?

I understand your pain.

I got my titers, and my urine work up, and my PPD. I used to work for a lab, so I went back.

I cannot seem to develope a titer to Rubeola, For the second time my titer was low(checked it 5 years ago), and so another MMR. HAd to get another tetnus, and my PPD came back POSITIVE! Which means a chest Xray. Bah!

Also, I did the hep series 3 years ago and my titer was dead negative. CRazy, so I started that over.

I feel your pain!

So do I have to do another blood AND urine or can they do the alcohol and drug tests through my blood alone?

Probably, if they didn't. Your titers are important, as I said, it shows I'm not "immune" per se to Rubeola and hep. IT's better than just shot records.

I just found out I need to be fingerprinted too. Oh well!

how many people are in pbl.
I was checking to see if anyone here is in it.

What kind of laptop will everyone be using? Since the laptop I presently have is nearly unusable, I think I may get this:

HP Pavilion tx1000z

I bought the Gateway CX210 tablet. I like it alot. Consider one to save the hassle of notebooks lol.

I'm getting a dell small business 480m, it was supposed to be shipped out already but I guess dell has a shortage of screens or something. Anyway I'm eagerly awaiting its arrival.

😍 My dream computer! But I hear the tablet screen on these pcs can go out quickly and sometimes inexplicably. In addition, if you write a lot on their screens, they get scratched up. I still love that computer, though!

My brother (the computer guy in our family) recommended a Dell professional grade computer. To that end, I've got the Dell Latitude D520, which is much more (how should I say) operational than my last HP laptop.

... still wish I had a tablet, though....

Also, if you don't want Windows Vista as an OS, I suggest ordering direct from a manufacturer. Most places (e.g. Best Buy) will have Vista already installed.... and I have yet to meet someone who can uninstall Vista. It's almost like it has a protective function against uninstallation.

I just talked to Melissa Watkins on the phone and she said over the next two days they're going to mail out a class profile, info on Big Brother/Big Sister, and some orientation info. 😀

1 month to go!

Hey classmates!

I just signed a lease for a 1 bedroom apt at Mill Glen Apts with the Hawthorne/Baldwin real estates. It's on Kuntz Road, right across from the Grenada Apts. Wondering if anyone else is living there.

My experience with Windows is that it's particularly easy to "uninstall" 😡

Though Linux has been my primary OS for ~5 years, I want Vista. Linux compels me to tinker, and I'm not anticipating the free time and spare energy for that. Besides, Vista and especially Office 2007 are great.

Does anyone know if we'll be required to install software that may not be compatible with Vista or 64 bit processors (that HP I'm looking at will have an AMD 64 with 64 bit Vista)?

I hope not. I have Vista and pretty much all software over a year old has some part of it that is not compatible with vista. Example, a really nice printer purchased a year ago is not totally compatible. Kind of frustrating. They have stuff you can download to fix some of it, but not all of it.

LECOM laptop specifications can be found at: http://www.my.lecom.edu/lecom/admissions/laptopspec.asp

It looks like most Windows operating systems should work...
I should clarify my comments about Vista. The printer problem (i.e. perfectly good printers not having compatible software with Vista) is *very* common; one of the bugs Microsoft didn't work out before they released the thing. I find that the people who really like Vista are those who do lots of media work with pictures, music, and/ or movies. Those who do more work with data processing, documents, PowerPoint presentations, (traditional MS Office work) tend to prefer the previous operating systems. "Uninstalling" Vista basically requires that you back up all documents, then reinstall and overide the OS with a previous version (such as XP).

Anyhow, several of my friends are very unhappy with Vista, so I want people to make an informed decision....

I have Verizon DSL for 15 bucks a month. I'm using it right now in Erie.

Does anyone know who I send my new address and phone number to at LECOM?

Same thing happened to me, an "all-in-one" printer I purchased less than a year ago took me a while to get working. Funny thing, though...an ancient networked laser printer (>10 year old) I've acquired works pefectly, zero manual configuration was required beyond pointing Vista to its network address. This same printer was hell getting it to work with Win2k, and I gave up trying to get XP to cooperate.

I like Vista. As I mentioned, I've come over from Linux several months ago, and Vista's working great for me. I'd still be using Linux, but I just don't have the time or energy to tweak things anymore. Also, I'm very impressed with Office 2007 (which I suppose I could use in XP, but I like Vista more, so I guess that's that).

Is anyone using Vista on a tablet (or convertible tablet)? Have you used XP on a tablet? Prefer one over the other for tablets?

You should send it to Melissa Watkins- student affairs and Steve Kovac- security. When I was there he said that due to some PA law, the two offices can't exchange information.

Wow- anyone see LECOM's new web page?

I've learned more about our class schedule from looking at that for 2 seconds than I have so far. Apparentely our class is bowling on 7-29....
