Hey guys!! So, I went to look at some apartments today! Besides Laurel Ridge and Laurel Springs, I also like Mill Glenn apts and Royal Villa. Does anyone know which one is better or closer to LECOM? Is it relatively quiet at Mill Glenn since someone mentioned that sometimes it can be noisy.

Hello all,

There are two houses that are about 5 minutes walking distance from LECOM open for rent starting in June.

One has three bedrooms while the other is a single bedroom deal. Both have access to a pool and I believe the landlady is in the process of adding a gym to the property in the near future.

The rent is pretty cheap and the houses are located on a quiet side street near LECOM.

I will be joining you all in the fall as well. I'm hoping to get a 2Br at Laurel Ridge or Laurel Springs and share with a roommate. I like the whole walking distance from school thing. If any females (I'm female) are interested in sharing an apartment please PM me. I'm on the wait list for both places.

Did anyone get a schedule of when classes begin or a list of the books we need yet?

Hey Everyone! I recently paid a deposit on a townhouse in the Carrolwood complex.... 2 mins from LECOM.... and I was wondering if anyone else was moving there in the fall.
 
You will probably get your schedule in the summer sometime. But I think its done, we just had a presentation on how our evaluations changed the MS1 schedule for next year. You got a lot of good stuff we are jealous of! For example, your anatomy lab practicals are on Friday, while the written exam is on Monday. So you get more time to study just individual aspects, and you're not in the school for 6 hours at a time with no eating! You also get more of a "finals week" for CORE (biochem, micro, pharm, etc.....) where every day you have a different test. Ours were just 1 giant test on the same day.

BUT...you have more quizzes and anatomy oral quizzes :meanie:
 
Ahh we'll get them for their MS2. Just remember to say you hate all the good things and love all the bad. 😆

ISP/PCSP/LDP/PBl ALL take anatomy together. We only have a small oral portion to our anatomy practicals that counted for 3 point (6%) per exam. At the time, we would draw a card and then have to answer the question on the card within one minute. I think they are planning for your oral exams to be worth more. I wouldn't get worked up about it now. Just enjoy the summer.
 
He was talking about the oral quizzes being part of normal lab, not the practical (which I'm sure will still have an oral component). Its their way of making sure you are prepared for lab that day. Everyone in your group has to answer questions, so if you get it wrong, all your group members get a lower grade.

This sounds like it sucks, however, I learned so much more in neuroanatomy lab where we had quizzes at the end of every lab period. Anatomy lab I did nothing except stared at the clock. So having this pressure will help you immensely in learning the material NOT right before the practical.

Hi Everyone!

Kind of a random question but for those of you who are current students at LECOM what cell phone provider do you use? Right now I have T-mobile but the times I've been back to visit my family in Pittsburgh I've found that it works just fine when I'm in town but as soon as I leave any major city I get spotty or no service. My contract is up at the moment so I'm debating whether or not to continue with them or swich to another carrier. I don't know how much traveling to expect to get to rotations and such and my fear is that I will end up on the side of some icy country road in the winter and not be able to call for help.

Hi azdesertgirl,
Welcome to LECOM! :hardy: I use Cingular & it works well. Be advised, your cell probably won't work in the building except for a few hotspots (1st floor by the north entrance, 2nd floor by the clinical office/pharm school windows, and 3rd floor next to the forbidden south entrance foyer).
 
I use verizon and haven't had a problem with it anywhere in Erie except LECOM, it works inside in various spots though.
 
Hey, Just curious if anyone has heard when orientation starts?

I believe it is July 26, but I could be wrong.

I was also wondering about housing in the Erie area. I got accepted late so I'm only starting to look now, but I see a lot of posts talking about people being on waitlists for apartments. Is it that hard to find housing in Erie? Or is it just that everyone wants to live right next to school so those apartments have waitlists?
 
There are a few things about erie which you may find well, eerie. For example; every third car has a blinker going for no reason, an approaching ambulance with lights and sirens blaring means nothing to other drivers (I got flipped off for safely pulling to the right), EVERYONE here thinks going to medical school means you're studying to be a nurse's aid, you can only buy wine & spirits at a wine & spirits store (many of which close at 7pm), you can only buy beer at a beer store (where you can get draft beer in to-go containers), most of the locals are obese smokers, & the legal age of consent is 14!!!! I am not complaining, I'm just pointing out some particular oddities.

With regards to appartments, that's the weirdest thing of all. They're all full. When we came to look for housing, the agents (all of them, regardless of the company) would show us appartments that were currently occupied. That may not sound too weird, but the standard practice was to knock, and if no one answered, they would just unlock the door and show us around. My wife and I felt like burglars. I mean, what if someone was in the shower or gettin' busy, or otherwise too engaged to answer the door?😱

LMAO! I have to laugh because I know it's all true! My family is from Pittsburgh and I have extended family in Erie but I was born and raised in Phoenix. I spent all my summers back there as a kid so I know just how different the culture is. Although I think the comment about going to medical school must apply to 'ahem' less knowledgeable people in general, because even in Arizona when I tell people I'm going to medical school some ask "oh, what are you going for?"---Um, the only thing you go for, to be a DOCTOR! Lol. The only thing I know I'm going to hate about PA is all the smoking. I hate it when I go out to eat with my family and we ask for non-smoking and we get taken a few tables away from people smoking which is the "non-smoking" section. In Arizona I'm spoiled, we have one of the most restrictive, if not the most restrictive smoking law in the US. Smoking is banned in all indoor public areas, even bars, and within so many feet of entrances to public buildings.

RE: the apartments, that is kinda creepy to be looking around someone's apartment when they're still living there. But I suppose if you're looking at apartments a few months in advance it would hard to expect that the apartment would be vacant and then sit vacant until you moved in months later. But I've never heard of apartment waitlists before. Does everyone just hang out on waitlists until an apartment opens up? Where do you stay in the meantime? I thought once I got my acceptance letter that I was done with being on waitlists! 😛
 
You will have no problem getting into an apartment on time, you won't have to wait. There are always people coming and going, it's just that nobody has any spares or models to show potential tenants.
 
Whew, thanks! I was just a little mystified after seeing a bunch of posts of people talking about being on waitlists for apartments.

lol that happened to me before. I was just out of the shower and so I didn't hear the knock only my door opening. I ran and locked myself in the bedroom. But what they do is tell you upfront that it's possible for that to happen towards the end of your lease and ask you if it would be okay. Of course when you approve you imagine the chances of you being out of the shower and them walking in on you to be pretty low.
 
Does anyone know if we are allowed to wear scrubs at least for our anatomy lab?
 
Yes, we can wear scrubs for anatomy lab and we also dress down for OMM lab. I think guys wear shorts and girls wear sports bras and shorts (I'm not exactly looking forward to that though, lol.)
 
Nobody wore scrubs during the actual anatomy lab. Some did however after hours.
 
Yeah, the anatomy profs told us specifically that we were to be in dress code (guys=ties, slacks, & dress shoes) in the lab. Most of us had a dedicated lab ensemble which got thrown out after anatomy ended. Scrubs are not allowed.
 
Really? I could have sworn when I got the tour that they pointed out the lockers and said here's where you'll be changing into scrubs for lab.

Scrubs are definitely not allowed for anatomy lab. People use the locker room area to change into their lab clothes (which are your gross, smelly, dress code clothes).
 
About orientation....I found this post by T.J. on the LECOM Class of 2012 facebook group (Thanks T.J!):

I talked to Susan Lazarro today and she gave me the details on orientation:

Saturday, July 26
- Students report to the school in the morning (this is the first day we need to report to school, nothing on Friday), get student ID, parking pass, turn in any missing paperwork
- From 1-4:30, the school puts on a little presentation for families including an explanation of "What it means to be a D.O." and a tour of the school.

Sunday, July 27
- More of a free day, but just for students. Includes bowling and all-around social time.

That week
- She said the structure for that week is more "getting you used to the pace of things," and will be a mix of orientation and class. The morning sessions will be orientation, while the later sessions will be class, so that way we don't get an overkill of orientation stuff.
 
They really did a great job for our orientation week. Our first day was a Saturday (I think, head full of OMT right now). I came home proudly wearing my ID badge and displaying my parking pass, so fraking excited to FINALLY, officially be a medical student. But my wife & kids were in Buffalo, so I just called my Dad.

Orientation week is a lot like slowly pulling onto an on-ramp in Los Angeles. The second week is like the transition from said on-ramp to the 405 just after rush hour. Med school is really a kick in the bells, but you'll love it. Right, bkpa2med?

I was wondering if anyone knew someone in Royal Villa that would allow me to check out their 2 bedroom this saturday. I tried to get a tour but the owners will not be in town and thus can't take me through. Thanks

So now that its only 8 weeks till school starts I still haven't received the email that gives you your pin from lecom so you can see your financial aid package. Is anyone else still waiting? When do we usually get this information?
