LECOM-Erie Discussion thread 2007-2008

I was "conditionally" accepted to LECOM, provided that I complete 4 credit hours of Inorganic Chem I. Which is silly since I had AP credit. I called them and they said I was fine-- I just need to send them a transcript. I sent a transcript to them after my secondary app ( a really long time ago) and they said they didn't get it. I sent another one last week and they said they still haven't gotten it. Do you all have any thoughts on what is going on. I really hope I don't get rejected from LECOM on an administrative issue. It is just kinda frustrating because I AM ALREADY IN!!

Did you send them the transcript yourself or have it sent to them by the school? If you sent it I would either send it priority mail with delivery confirmation or overnight it. When you overnight it they require a signature so if they actually do receive it they won't be able to deny it.

I interviewed here on nov 2nd and I was wondering if anyone heard back yet?

I called the school and they said that the people who interviewed on Nov 2nd had their files reviewed on the 7th and letter were mailed out thursday or friday of that week, therefore we should be anxiously checking our mailboxes for the next week.....

But I digress, My question is did anyone here back? from the Nov 2nd group?
 
Hi I have a couple of questions for any LECOM ISP students out there, or any other LECOM student for that matter.

Anyway, I was recently accepted to LECOM in the ISP pathway and was wondering if any students can offer some insight about this curricular track. After talking to a few LECOM students and grads, I am getting the idea that I should probably just switch to the lecture pathway. Is it difficult to have one test determine your entire grade for each system? Is not being on the same schedule as the lecture students a disadvantage due to not being able to attend lecture? Any advice would be appreciated. Feel free to PM me if you prefer. Thanks
 
How much of a deposit do they require and when is it due? Has anyone heard if they were accepted from calling the admissions office or did everyone have to wait for the letter?

You do have to wait for the letter; I tried to call and was just told to wait. The deposit to hold your seat is 1500 bones and it all goes towards tuition. They give you about a month to accept depending on when you receive the letter. If you are offered the $1000 LECOM scholarship you have to respond within a certain amount of time. Basically makes the OS tuition the same as IS tuition. It is offered to those that are in the top 10% of the applicant pool accepted. Hope that helps, good luck.

I'm in LDP but I thought that ISP was on the same track as LDP for the purpose that if the ISPers were confused about something they could attend lecture. PBL definitely does not correlate with LDP, and neither does PCSP. But someone correct me if I'm wrong about ISP.

Lisa is correct from what I've heard. anyone, ISP or PBL can attend lecture if they want to. with PBL it doesn't always correspond, but from the ISPer's that i have talked to, they seem to be following along with LDP.
 
Does anyone have an idea which path choice gives a student the best chance of admission? In other words is LECOM relatively short of ISP and PBL applicants and overwhelmed with LDP or PCSP applicants or vice versa? Any advice from current students?

If you pick one path will they offer you another if the first is filled?

Your pathway pick doesn't influence your admission to LECOM. When you go for your interview they have you rate your top choices on a separate piece of paper and these then go into a separate file. Once your personal file is reviewed after your interview and they decide to accept you, then they pull out your pathway preference and see if you get your number one pick based on how many are already in that pathway and how you will fit (I did get my first choice!). So in your letter of acceptance it will tell you that you are accepted to the school and will then give details to which pathway you are accepted into.

I interviewed on Nov 1st and received my acceptance letter/scholarship letter today!!..yippee....good luck to everyone:luck:
 
Anybody been stocking up on fancy clothes for lecture yet?
 
But I just realized that you have to call and confirm your interview and it is passed the 2 week date. Has anyone called past the deadline? Are they pretty upset about it? I'm sure I'll have to get a later date now but I'm just wondering if this is going to make me look bad?
 
How far past the 2 weeks is it? I know other people have called after the deadline and it apparently wasn't a problem. Just call first thing in the morning and I'm guessing you should be fine. Congrats on getting an interview!
 
does anyone know how long after the interview it takes to get a response? I had my interview on november 8th..I'm guessing i'll know by this thursday since it's the 2 week mark..
 
So people who already interviewed at LECOM, did you guys already have answers to the standard questions they ask before you went in to the interview? I was wondering if I should do this or not, I am afraid it will sound too mechanical and not from the heart at the interview.

Hopefully this does not happen to your LOR's at Erie when your applying to residency... funny how things dont show up at LECOM!!!:laugh:
 
MDROCKSTAR - I see the above post about your AP credit for Chemistry - are they going to accept your AP credit afterall, once they actually recieve your transcript??

I am wondering if anyone else has been in this situation and what you did...

I have 8 credits of AP physics credit (that appears on my college transcript as credit), and LECOM just sent me an email saying they weren't sure if they would accept that - that the admissions committee would review it.

Has anyone had to then re-take classes that you already took AP credit in to get accepted to LECOM? Or did they eventually accept the AP credits?

I have 8 AP credits of Bio 1 and 2 on my application, hopefully I won't have to take the class over again 🙁 I haven't gotten an email or anything like that yet.
 
accepted yesterday.....its my first one and it feels great!!! 😀

Btw know how much the deposit is at Lecom?

The lady at Erie (Amy Rowe) told me that my AP credit was fine-- they just needed to see that credit was applied to my undergraduate transcript. That would be a totally B.S. reason to reject somebody-- for being smart in high school and passing those AP tests.

My good friend Lisa is correct. I'm PCSP. And switching out of LDP has been a challenge for me, since PCSP is in line with PCSP. It's really challenging, did I say? Yes, the 1 test per subject is intense, it is not for the faint of heart, but the last two LDP tests weren't any easier by y thoughts, would you think Lisa? Right now we're hitting micro, and luckily the LDP did micro a little later, so what they will be doing in micro, proably 6 lectures, will apply, and their lecturers has already placed their lectures on the server, so I can check them out.

In biochem, our Module(PCSP/ISP biochem class) gave us a stack of voice overed slides he made for classes. It was very helpful.

It's hard in that after 1 week, PCSP/ISP is done with Physio, LDP has it for 2 more tests(1.5 months). Next we have biochem, and that's done in two weeks, but realize that at first, a couple times a week we get lectures from those module teachers in case we need help. We have open access to teachers if needed and everything we're being tested on is found in a booklet. If you like flexible and just like hitting the books and figuring it out and working with others, it's really nice, and it's 1 subject at a time. PBL is the same, reading, self guided study, they just put it in context. PCSP does a little of this, but not as much as the PBLers.

Hey guys,
I was curious what you are going to do until we start med school next year. My biochem professor says I should keep taking classes like Biochem 2 (I have a degree in Psych, Chem minor, and TONS of premed prereqs.) but I was thinking I'd work to save up money. What are ya'll doing??
 
working to get some cash ---med school is pretty expensive. I took a lot of courses that I feel will help me in med school (anatomy, physiology, biochem I and II, micro, genetics, etc.) But there are always more: immunology, pharmacology, etc)
 
Does anyone know if LECOM-E has a human simulation lab? In my continuing internal debate on which school to attend next fall, some other schools place a large emphasis on their latest and greatest HSLs, and LECOM didn't even really mention it.

How much do these things actually help?

For instance, WVSOM has a few now, but is scheduled to open a new facility that houses 10 full simulators!

Is this a really necessary and legit teaching tool that is going to make a big difference in my education, or just another bell and whistle that I won't even really notice is absent from another school?

Haha yes, our last 2 tests were challenging I thought. The averages weren't so hot. You go from 1 huge class (anatomy) with some little ones thrown in (histo & embryo) to CORE where everything is a big class. They said that the first exam sucks, and then people gradually improve. I either stayed the same or improved in my subjects.

Really? I haven't heard about this before. I assume that erie doesn't have one, otherwise they would have mentioned it.
 
We just recently moved to Bradford, PA. I have heard great things about LECOM. My brother wants to go to medical school and he is considering a DO instead of an MD degree because his GPA is a bit low. He was looking into LECOM-Erie. Well, I was talking to my MD the other day and I didn't mention anything to her about my brother. Her daughter is attending DO school in California. When I asked why she went away when there are DO schools much closer, she said that her daughter was afraid of being associated with LECOM. I thought LECOM was a good school. Why did she say that? I have a friend at LECOM who yes, did get in with a 2.9 undergraduate GPA, but also had a 3.7 in graduate school. I thought they had a decent reputation. Why the hating? Now my brother doesn't want to stay close to us because of this school. 🙁
 
LECOM is just a different sort of animal than most other med schools.

They are very strict in terms of dress code and attendance.

The school is only 14 years old and is located in Erie, PA.

Finally, the school is a breakaway school from PCOM. They left bc they believed that PCOM was doing something wrong, which is BS.

Overall though, people who go to LECOM don't seem to be dissatisfied on the whole. I'm sure that LECOMers will chime in shortly.

My advice: He should apply and go to the interview and form his own impressions... The rotations in the Pittsburgh area are not bad... many LECOMers choose to do rotations through PCOM's network, too (JPHazelton, 2006).

Okay other than what Max said, I have heard, and take this with a grain of salt, that a few LECOM graduates who have tried to work and get licensed in this state had difficulties doing so. I have no clue why that would be true.
 
I know 3 LECOM grads here in Austin. 2 FP and 1 ER. So they at least seem to have a presence.

When did your friend get admitted to LECOM with a 2.9?

If you got into Louisville's dental school, y'all did great.
 
weird...LECOM is my first acceptace so im psyched..but i'm also curious as to why there seems to be kind of a weird hush hush negative association with it...i mean, their residency match is good, yeah the dress code sucks but ppl dont seem to mind it too much, tuition is great, facitilites are great..why do i keep hearing bad things??
 
By the way, I'm not trying to stir anything up I'm just stating what I know from a very reliable source. This is just one example and I don't know what are the issues behind it. I wouldn't worry too much about it. I think it's important to learn what you can about each school and apply/attend if you feel it's the right school for you.
 
When I was on the interview trail one of my interviewers was a member of AOA COCA. This person stated that they would recommend all DO schools except RVU (our conversation was regarding RVU) and "the one in Erie". Again, I did not get a full reason as to why. I know next to nothing about LECOM. So I suppose I am adding fuel to the rumor fire without solid evidence. Bad, bad bioteach.

Because people on SDN love to gossip. There are lot's of stories that get repeated here year after year that have no sense of "truth" whatsoever. They have nice facilities, good rotations, a really good match list and a PBLer even scored an 850 on COMLEX the year before last. They have more options for learning styles than you will find anywhere else. So...you can get a good education there if you want to.

They are, however, strict with some of the rules. Really strict sometimes. It always surprises me how people know about all the rules before they ever go there...then complain about about it-- very vocally.

Also, a lot of people who are from the city complain that it's a small town with nothing to do. It's ten times bigger than where I grew up....but it's not a big city. Some people don't like the snow (me for one) and complain about the weather.

You've got to choose where you want to go based on your feelings oncem you've actually seen the place for yourself and talked to the people first hand. If you listen to the rumours from people who have never even been there, however, you might miss out on a great opportunity.

Last of all. Keep in mind that SDN is filled with anonymous posters. You have absolutely NO clue who they are, where they are from, or whether they know what they are talking about. People come on here all the time trolling for no good reason, someone listens to what they say, then spreads it across the board like it's Gospel. be very careful what you believe. If you heard it on SDN, it might be true. Then again, it just might not. Do yourself a favor and don't repeat any hearsay until you've verified it on your own. You've got to see things for yourself before you believe it.

BTW, I could never go there. It's too cold for me :laugh:.

Honestly though, it did make a big impression when a COCA member stated that it was the only already existing school that he wouldn't recommend applying to.


I would love to hear from a current LECOM student. This man had obviously never been a student, so perhaps the education is top notch. It could just be administrative-type issues/hassles. He didn't say anything about the education.
 
There are several LECOM graduates at the hospital where I work and they all said it was a great school. They were all in good residencies and said their education there was excellent. People are always going to have their bias. Maybe those docs had sh*tty residents from LECOM and associate everyone from that school as being bad doctors. It's the perons that matters, not the school.
