LMU c/o 2027 Applicants

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Most students rent houses and live by themselves or with roommates. It's been mentioned here but join the LMU CVM housing and for sale page and you can start get a feel of what is available. There is also a LMU-DCOM housing facebook group that I would join. I would say a majority of the housing is in Middlesboro and Harrogate. There are some off-campus apartments but they are few and far between. Best bet would be graduate housing or renting a house. Be careful if looking at housing out at Ewing which is closer to the Virginia farm, some houses don't have internet or if they do its slow.

I know I have classmates that moved from big cities and experienced culture shock. It is very rural out here and the larger cities are knoxville (11.5 hours away) and lexington (2 hours away). Morristown is about an hour and has a little more to do than middlesboro. Middlesboro has a walmart, movie theatre, belks, and a few other small shops but that is about it. The majority of things to do around here is being outside (hiking, kayaking). The gap has festivals pretty regularly which are fun and a chance to get out and enjoy the community. There are 2 bars in the gap but most people go to knoxville. Honestly it makes going to knoxville fun because you usually go on a free weekend or after exams to celebrate. You are so busy studying and doing school work I think I forget sometimes that I live in a rural area.

I would not recommend working. You hit the ground running from the first week and are doing hands on labs and lecture days can be from 8-5pm. Your schedule is also always changing and it's not like undergrad where you have the same class on the same day. Your schedule can also change even after the semester starts. Once you get through first year if you do well in a class you can apply to be a tutor and it's an easy way to earn some money while having a flexible schedule. If anything I would wait until your at least through your first year before considering working during school and just focus on working during breaks.
Thanks for the advice!! Very much appreciated! And yeah, that seems to be something common I've heard from other students from other vet schools on the APVMA FB page since most of the vet schools tend to be in rural areas. It seems like everyone just gets really busy that they don't even notice that they live in a rural area haha

For some of the practice MMI questions (which are hard to find) I’ve seen some where they may have applicants calculate drug dosages, etc. How high of probability does that have being asked during vet school interviews?
I know for me personally when I did my interview, there was no math involved. I highly doubt they will ask you a calculation question but if they did, it shouldn't be a hard math problem.

I’m so conflicted 😞 the idea that this may be my only chance of attending vet school next year (other than the carribeans) is making this choice impossible. I want to give myself the chance to hear back from the 12 schools I have left to hear from, but what if they are all rejections? Then I’ll be stuck going to the carribeans which is my back up school 😭 do you think those who are accepted for the spring will also be at the top of the list for fall acceptances?
If It helps, I can walk you through my thought process. I'm like 95% leaning towards placing my deposit today but just have a few phone calls to make that's gonna solidify my decision. The main thing that was really stopping me from accepting the offer right away was the fact that I would have to break my current lease, LMU is far from my home state and friends and family, and that I still had a lot of schools left to hear back from. I've been lucky in that my boyfriend is willing to take on the entire apartment so that I don't have to pay any penalty fines for breaking our lease. I'm still intimidated in that LMU is so far from home, and I would've loved to stay closer to where my boyfriend would be able to visit, but I think the reality is that no matter where I go, I'll eventually be so busy with studying that I would really only be able to see him a few times in a semester + breaks. Finally, I would've loved to hear back from all of the other schools that I had applied to, but I absolutely don't want to be applying a third cycle. So for me, the risk of having to apply for a third cycle is just too big, especially since I won't have the money to do so since I spent so much on this cycle. I think you also just need to take into consideration whether or not you're willing/able to take that risk. Hopefully that helps, but I also know that everyone is completely different! Make the decision that's best for you!

Hey guys,

Can I please confirm some order of events occurring during this application process with LMU?

From reading the thread, it appears that people who applied this cycle did so through VMCAS with the expectation that they were applying for a standard Fall (August) matriculation.

Later, it seems applicants were contacted about whether they would be interested in a Spring cohort, and the people initially offered acceptances were given the choice of either matriculation date.

Then last week, this changed to being offered only acceptance in the spring, with reconsideration for the fall if you decline this initially.

Is that all correct?

Does anyone know if we get anything in the mail about an acceptance?

Pretty much

For everyone who's already accepted, is there any info on getting a rabies vaccine and stethoscope?

I believe we will get all of that in the mail with our “official” acceptance letter. I do know that you will need to get the rabies vaccine. I think, and don’t quote me, with a meeting I had with admissions, they will try to have rabies vaccines for the incoming class and it’s an out of pocket cost. A stethoscope is needed for school so purchase one, or have family make it a Christmas gift that’s what I’m doing lol!

ahhh ok, I might contact them about it then. I'm trying to get it before I leave since my boyfriend is the policyholder for our insurance since it's from the company he works for and it's a lot easier to deal with this kind of stuff in person than over the phone lol

I emailed admission a question yesterday and they responded saying they will put me back in the applicant pool for the fall. But I never asked to be put back 😭😂 wondering if I should just take this as a sign
lol what the heck, though i'm sure if you told them they misunderstood you they would finish giving you your 5 days

can we please get some more context I am cracking up 😂😂 did they just randomly say this or was it a question about denying the acceptance because these circumstances are just too much for these actions by them right now 😂😂😂

I’d recommend following back up and clarifying what you were actually wanting.

Lol I agree. I can’t even imagine how crazy the admission office is right now. At the end of the day, more people are going to be accepted to vet schools because of the addition of this spring cohort at LMU. This is a big win for many of us- even those hoping for a fall acceptance.

This is probably not accurate but the FB group says there are 36 members currently which has been steadily and slowly going up since last week
I would take this number with a grain of salt, there are some current students and faculty in the group to help answer questions as well as plenty of people that have been accepted that don’t know the group exists!
I wish I could be of more help with this question, but the only people that truly know the size of the class right now is admin unfortunately.

Totally agreed, it's really hard to say with FB, especially since there are so many people who don't even use the platform anymore. I was waitlisted last year and everyone would constantly be watching the FB page for that specific class and school, but honestly, it really wasn't much help. Just made the anxiety worse lol

Just received an acceptance!!!! I will most likely be declining due to a pre-planned internship but I would love to start in the fall 🤩🤩🤩 hoping I open a seat for someone who is ready for the Spring start date 🙂

I feel like it's hopeless to expect anything from LMU at this point, as I haven't heard anything from them at all. I wish this spring cohort would have been added for 2024 😢
Keep your head up!! It's still very early in application season & this unique scenario has been anxiety inducing, to say the least. Sending good vibes your way! 🙂

Agree it’s stressful and not going smoothly, but I feel very fortunate that spring cohort happened this year, no matter how you look at it, 100 more seats will increase our chances.

Hi friends! I’m an admin for the spring cohort Facebook group! I just want to politely ask that you all fill out the questions before requesting to join or I’ll have to deny you. We had a problem with spam accounts being accepted over the weekend and posting spam links, so I’m going to be stricter about it to avoid the headache! I can’t wait to meet you all

Would you be willing to share how many students are in the group at this time?

Do you know when they are going to start releasing fall offers?

Do you know when they are going to start releasing fall offers?
I feel like it is highly likely that they will release fall offers around January. In the email they clearly stated that they will send spring cohort offers first in the next couple of weeks (1-8 weeks). This email was sent out in the beginning of november.

I interviewed on 10/24 and am eligible to start in the spring, and I’m starting to feel really discouraged that I haven’t heard back yet. I feel like if I wasn’t accepted for spring out of a MUCH smaller pool of applicants, then I definitely don’t have a shot at the fall cohort either 🙁

I was talking with one of the doctors at my clinic and they have a friend who works at LMU & they said there are having trouble filling the spring class (which we all know), but what I was thinking since I still have one pre-rec to do is email them and ask them if they would be willing to void that pre rec since they are likely *desperate* for spring students. Just curious if anyone would be interested in doing this!

I just got an acceptance for spring… interviewed on 11/9.. my masters degree will be finished in december but i can’t break my lease… which goes until September 2023 which i was expecting to deal with the one month overlap. I feel crushed. I have already applied to vet school twice. Fall 2023 would have been perfect, if i decline I feel like I will be giving up my one chance.

Congratulations. Whatever you decide good luck.🍀

I sent an email to cierra 8 days ago about how on VMCAS it says i won’t be finished with pre-reqs until next year but since i submitted, my schedule has changed and i will be finished by december and wanted to make them aware and i still haven’t heard back. Is there anyone else I can email?

Maybe just their main admissions email?

YES! I was just thinking about the same thing the other day. I have one pre req missing that I was planning on taking this spring. Should we do that???

Just got accepted for the spring! But I’m so torn like everyone else. I applied to 15 other schools and don’t really want to commit to LMU without hearing back from the others. I’ve had 1 other interview (with SGU which would only be my last resort since I’d rather stay in the US) and then have 2 other interviews planned for US schools. I’m also on an interview waitlist for one school. But this is my only acceptance so far and so the idea of declining and then not getting in to other schools would be awful but also LMU is just moving further down on my list the more emails they send out with how disorganized they are and also hearing some bad things about their reputation. Ugh I don’t know what to do!!!

So I’m literally only 1 credit short in their “advanced science electives” section. I emailed and asked that question about a month ago when I interviewed and they told me no and that I would not be eligible for January. But now that it is a month later, maybe they’ve become more motivated to fill that January class that they’d be willing to negotiate.
I’m hoping they get back with fall decisions soon. LMU would be the only school I’d have to take any classes in the spring for so I’d rather know sooner than later.

When did you interview?

I also only have one pre req left. If anyone else emails this question soon, let me know! I would love to start in spring if accepted I’m just not eligible as of now

A client at my clinic that works at Virginia-Maryland told me that in the last 2 years, LMU has produced some great vets! I know it has been disorganized lately, but I think it’s still a great school w/ utd technology.
