LMU c/o 2027 Applicants

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I declined a SGU January start last year for a fall start the year after. Thankful I was given the option for either cohort at LMU, but realistically I haven’t heard the greatest things about them. I’m not going to turn down the possibility of getting into my IS. Vet school is a money game and I’m not going to go 300K in debt for a maybe.

my exact thoughts. I don’t want to attend spring but i am eligible. If they accept me for spring i will be so torn and would only accept out of fear that my IS would reject me and i wouldn’t get accepted for fall. The fact that so many people were already given the choice and now they’re taking it away looks so terrible on them.
I feel the same way. I am eligible for spring but I applied to other schools and want to hear back from them. It would be heartbreaking to get accepted for one cohort and denied for the other all due to a form that was not supposed to be a binding agreement.

I usually try to stay positive on this forum, but I feel like my dreams have just been crushed lol. I live 10+ hours away from LMU and realistically I maybe could have seen myself decide to make the move a month ago, but now it just seems unrealistic and for them to take the choice away from us stings. Like I understand why the did it, but now I will probably be giving away my chances of attending LMU if I do decide against spring. Also not fair of those who already received an acceptance to still be able to choose fall and not have to be reevaluated. Just makes me feel hopeless 😔

they think they’re having a hard time filling the spring cohort now, it’s going to be even more difficult with what they’ve done with the “non-binding” survey and taking away the choice. People aren’t going to want to attend an institution that has had this much difficulty and has sent so many meaningless emails that they change their minds about, and their tuition being almost double that of most IS schools. I would honestly rather take the chance of being rejected from my IS than attend because of how mad this has made me lol.

I feel the same, I’m honestly throwing them out for now mentally. I’m not accepting a spring seat at this point and if I don’t get in in the fall, so be it. I have 9 other schools to hear from and LMU is now pretty much the bottom of my list. If I’m spending a quarter million dollars on my education I’d rather do it at a school that has a better administration. How unfair.

So I hope my message can express to you that you are not alone and things will work out! I am a re-applicant for vet school this year. Last year, one of the schools I applied to and got waitlisted on - contacted me 3 DAYS before orientation in the fall (the school shall remain anon so it doesn't impact anyones opinion of it)- offering me a seat in their CO 26. That was the most difficult choice I had to make. Start my dream that I have wanted since childhood and move my entire life within 48 hours and somehow find a way to pay for everything and find living, or take my chances and go with the schools I applied to for this cycle. I declined the offer, and as difficult as it was, in the long run I knew I made the right choice for myself and my life. From my experience, do what is best for you and your circumstances. It will work out for you in the end. If you feel that you may have to reject a spring acceptance because it will positively impact you in the long run, don't worry. Follow your instincts and do what is in your best interest. Vet schools will always be here, but we only get one shot at playing our life the way we want it to go.

Could not say it better myself!

this is actually great advice, you are so kind 🥲❤️

That’s how it should’ve been to begin with, those interested and eligible should have only had the option for spring. So, those already accepted and have chosen the fall date remain in the fall cohort correct?

I believe so, I signed the document stating what cohort I wanted. I haven’t heard anything else from them, but if they take away my acceptance to be reconsidered, I’ll pull my application.

If they do that, that would be awful. I wish everyone the best of luck and hate so many things are changing for us!

I don’t think that they would go back on the acceptances they already sent out. That would be horrible. I understand this is the first year that they are doing this process, but I wish it would have gone differently from the beginning for everyone’s sake

I hate the fact that they’ve taken away the choice. If you’re good enough to be accepted for spring then they shouldn’t have to reevaluate you for fall. An acceptance is an acceptance regardless of cohort and they shouldn’t “take it back” just because you decide on a different cohort. Especially since it’s such short notice and you could get accepted literally a week before. I don’t feel like that’s fair to oos people or ones waiting to hear from IS. I get their first priority is spring, but it just sucks that if you decline spring then you’re back in to be looked at again.

Ugh yeah I totally understand this and the back and forth is definitely hard. My view more comes from fairness to those who know they can only do fall. I think they’re struggling to fill spring so the fear (and likely why they changed things) before was that fall would be full before fall only applicants were even reviewed. So as a fall only applicant it relieves my anxiety a lot.

this is understandable too, but only allowing a few weeks or days to pack you’re entire life up to attend can be impossible for some, and not allowing them to attend fall when it’s their fault that such little notice was given, is completely unfair to those who were accepted. I am local to LMU so this doesn’t even apply to me, i just feel for those who live cross country. Also allowing those to choose who interviewed earlier and taking it away for others who interviewed later should be completely unacceptable.

completely understandable. If they try to go back on the ones they’ve already let decide, i would pull my application too and i’ve not even been offered admissions.

So they are allowing those who already received an acceptance to keep their pick, but are no longer giving a choice to the next round of offers until Spring is filled?

I 100% feel for all of you going through this, but I also don't know what their other option was if they were required to start a spring cohort with such a short notice? I feel like this sucks for everyone, applicants, admissions, and admin.

This!! I wonder how many are already in the fall cohort. No hate, just wondering what our chances out for getting accepted into the fall class

I agree. NONE of us applied to LMU for the possibility of a spring cohort. We all
Applied for a start date of 2023. I am happy for the world of veterinary medicine that a school was able to open their program to more students. It is extremely difficult to re-apply and put our lives on a serious hold. I am very disappointed after receiving the email. I don’t want to put blame on administration, because I know they are working very hard. But, I think they should have only offered the spring offers our first after interviewing everyone and go from there. Yes, it’s not a lot of time and may be impossible for some. But, it may be the best case scenario for some of us. I am sure there are some that only applied to LMU. It’s definitely not okay that they sent this recent email changing up the admissions process. As far as the cost of the program goes, LMU is every bit if not a little cheaper than most OOS schools. I think it’s going to be difficult to evaluate applicants equally with this process..

I had this same question, what if they've already filled a lot of the fall class?
Exactly. Would not surprise me one bit. However, people will start hearing back from other schools come the first of the year and will eventually decline their seats at other schools.

Them not allowing those who are accepted for spring to choose fall is my only issue because i agree their tuition may be cheaper than most OOS schools but it’s almost double for IS schools and a lot of people won’t hear back from their IS school by the time spring cohort has came and students denying spring and then getting rejected from everywhere else and not allowing them to start in fall when we all applied for fall 2023 is delusional.

I'm also worried about their timeline with regards to sending out spring acceptances. If you read the email, it says that they will be sending out acceptances for the next 1-8 weeks. Even 3 weeks from today is cutting it really close for sending out acceptances.

Right 😂 like in 8 weeks it will literally be January 10th

I will say this brings to question the admissions process as a whole. Are people being chosen to interview and subsequently accepted based on their perceived ability to potentially accept a spring seat? Vet schools in general are already aware of their lack of accessibility to people with socioeconomic disadvantages. Will they pass over applicants due to perceived financial strain? Will they interview/accept people closest to campus due to higher likelihood to reasonably make the move? I feel like this may be an ethics concern due to lack of transparency on top of the sheer disappointment for those who have already interviewed.

I say none of this with malice towards the school or their admin and admissions team, I have no doubt this is a very taxing time for them as well.

and at this point are they going to pause on sending out interview invites and just focus on who they already have interviewed??

SO TRUE. I am close to campus, eligible for spring, socioeconomically advantaged, and i feel like this is being set up very strategically and not a holistic or honest process. I hate to even say that but i think everyone can agree that it feels like people spring eligible have been given first priority which is not fair in any way. They should’ve accepted fall cohort first, and then offered spring positions to those accepted in the fall and then extended offers to the fall waitlist, then to those not accepted that had spring interest and worked from there since none of us even applied for spring 2023. I feel like just because i’m eligible for spring, they’ll offer me a seat just to fill the class but i wouldn’t even be considered for fall.

That’s literally how the island schools do it and they always fill their classes because those who didn’t get accepted or were waitlisted jump at the opportunity to go to school. They fill fall and offer the next spring class that isn’t starting during the application cycle.

As someone said above, I wonder how much of the fall cohort has been filled for them to have sent that email last night. I also believe that's probably why no acceptances were sent out this week. I hope they would resend the survey and state that if you mark interested/willing to do the spring class (this time) you have to do the spring or be put back in the pool for the fall. I'm sure there're candidates that would love to do the spring class but they are probably hidden in the many people that said they were interested and really weren't. No hate to these people because I know everyone wants to hear back.

I wouldnt say the fall class has been almost filled, but rather people who were given the choice of both did not choose spring and still have the option of fall seat but havent secured their seats yet(maybe to see if they hear back from other schools first, etc)

Agreed. I think most people are going to wait to hear back from other schools- myself included. I think what is the most irritating is the fact that there were options for other interview dates when interview invites went out. I’m sure some of us picked a later interview that worked with our schedules. Most people, are not going to accept spring if offered in the next 1-8 weeks. Thus, those will just have to wait to be placed back in the pool for fall. I am sure there are many applicants that have all of the pre-reqs completed. It is easier to evaluate those applicants, and I am sure those will be targeted for spring. They should have thought this through better. It will be hard for people to decline a seat for spring, when none of us had intention to start at LMU in the spring. I’m sure it will all work out in the end.

This is my exact thought process. I keep thinking if maybe I had scheduled my interview a week earlier, I may have gotten accepted already and not be in this situation. But that’s not how this process should work, it should be who is truly deserving of a seat. And the fact that I have worked so hard my entire life to get an acceptance to vet school but may have to turn it down is simply comical for my life story 😭😂

I couldn’t agree more.

I’m gonna be completely honest but with this acceptance coming so soon (1 week vs 8 weeks from today), I really can’t help but wonder if I had interviewed earlier, would I have been offered the option?

We probably would have. I’m kicking myself because I had the option to interview on 10/19 but decided on 10/26 instead… 🤦‍♀️ I feel like I should be screaming and jumping right now but I’m actually sooooo conflicted!

I know, I feel that…I could’ve interviewed earlier but I wanted some time to prepare for it. I really have no clue what to do.

I think you have a higher chance to be accepted again for Fall if got into Spring, so i don’t think they will just start all over reviewing who was accepted even if it was for Spring. You still passed the review and has been chosen.

Please take some time to scream and jump, you deserve it! That's AMAZING! :highfive:

Accepted into Spring cohort. I had dreamt of getting accepted into vet school for so long… but I can’t pick up and leave to start in January, especially without hearing from all other 13 schools I applied to. It is so disheartening and disappointing to have to decline.

Does anyone know how long we have to give them a decision after they send out Fall 2023 acceptances in Dec?
