LMU-DCOM (DeBusk COM) Discussion thread Part 2 2007-2008

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
so, what is the grading policy at DCOM? most med schools have High Pass, Pass and Fail system. Is this the case at DCOM?

Letter grades (with no plus/minus) based on the normal percentages (A is 90-100%). If I remember correctly, you just get the letter grade when grades come out and your percentage grade is used for the class ranking.

Maybe a current student can chime in if I'm wrong? 😳

Yay, my interview is this Tuesday and Im so excited! Im about to head out to Sacramento, CA right now and then I fly out to TN tomorrow morning, I've never been so I cant wait to check it out. Im a little scared to death because this is my first interview, but I've prepared so much so Im sure I will do fine. Im bringing my mom with me and Im wondering if anyone else brought a friend or family member? I think I will be a little embarassed if Im the only one, but what the heck! Thanks for all the god advice!
:luck: Good luck to me!

I brought my fiance to the interview with me. That day I was the only person to have someone else with them. He was in the room when they went over everything and went on the tours. I was accepted so I don't think it hinders you in any way. Yeah it may be a little awkward if you are the only one that brought someone but it's not going to affect your chances (unless maybe your guest makes a scene but that's unlikely I would imagine)

why would they not adopt the same grading policy as most med schools? then again, i know nothing. when it comes to matching into residencies, how would we fair with students coming from schools where a 70 and 89 are the same grade and they just get a "pass?" generally, what are the averages and etc....damn, the pre-medness in me is still there. hahaha

It's still the same thing. Even though those students just get a pass, they are still ranked, and their class ranking is sent to the residency programs they apply to. The pass/fail thing is just to keep competition at a minimum. It works out the same in the end.

Pam is right....even though other students only see pass/fail, their numerical values are used to rank them. The same with us....we see our letter grade (which determines the gpa) and the numerical grade (which we see too) is used to determine class rank. Therefore, all students are given the same treatment.

Oh...and at no school are a 70 and 89 equivalent.....yes, the P's are the same, but definitely not equal.

The funny thing about P/F vs. letter grades is that even though we get letter grades, most of us don't talk about what grade we got, but if we passed ro not.....among friends, we discuss scores 😉

When I interviewed, I got the feeling that students were really chill. Does this system make things a bit more cut throat as compared with other schools?

Does anyone know how grades weigh in with comlex scores with residency matching?

I'm not sure I understand your question. Are you asking about the correlation between medical school grades and COMLEX scores? You can go to pubmed and search for "medical school grades and board scores" and get hundreds of hits.

When it's time to participate in the match, programs will look at both your medical school grades (including class rank) and your COMLEX/USMLE scores. They will probably be more interested in your board scores.

Hope this helps! 🙂

i haven't gotten my matriculation packet yet, so im stilling waiting. i had a question on the housing. do you guys recommend getting a single or double? i figure having a double would cut housing in half, but when i toured I only saw one bed in the two bedrooms. anyone living there right now? any suggestions?

I could be wrong but I think the double is two rooms, not two bedrooms. I just assumed it was a two bedroom but when I saw it it definitely didn't look like it was made to have another bed. Like I said though, I could be wrong.

Does anyone know how grades weigh in with comlex scores with residency matching?

The two most important factors in residency matching are board scores and your clinical rotation scores/grades/LORs. Some specialties weigh the your gpa more than others, but according to Iserson's Getting Into a Residency, gpa is constantly ranked as one of the last thing looked at when looking at an applicant. Does this mean you can slack off, of course not, but it isn't the most important thing they look at. But you want the best board scores possible, regardless of your desired residency. Don't just aim low b/c you may want to go into FP.

I don't live in the apartments, but I can answer your question. The two-room apartments are NOT 2-bedrooms. They are 1 bedroom with a seperate living room, so basically you are giving yourself more space. When they say 2-room, they mean that it is 2 hotel rooms combined into one. Therefore, your housing would not be cut in half, but cost more than having a single room. If you want roommates, then you want to rent a house and split rent b/w you and your roommates.

I'm not exactly sure. Just challenge yourself, and aim high. You'll be fine. Also, from my experiences I've found that who you know is probably one of the most important things when entering into a career in medicine. LORs can make or break your residency placement. That's one of the major perks of DCOM. There are so few students there, so you'll really get a chance to know your professors well. Many of them are fairly well known in the osteopathic community, so an intimate and heartfelt letter from one of them will go a long way. Also, keep this in mind while you're looking at schools, because you're going to want to be able to rotate at hospitals where you can get some LORs that will help you land a residency somewhere you really want to go. For example, if you really want to do your residency at harvard or hopkins, you need to be somewhere that will allow you to rotate through hospitals on that level.

do you guys know how much the rent is for the dorms (1 and 2 bedrooms)?

Congrats on the interview! :hardy: At my interview there was a guy who brought his Mom and another girl who brought her fiancé. Personally, I thought it was a little weird for significant others and parents to be in the room with us while we were going through the interview orientation, but that's just me. Another girl who I interviewed with said she brought her boyfriend along, but he was just hanging out at the hotel until she was done.

Good luck with the interview! Just relax and be yourself . . . the interview is very laid back! Let us know how it goes when you get back! :luck:

I think that it would be fine to bring a significant other with you to tenn. but I dont think its a great idea to have them with you during the interview day. I think this is a day to show what you have accomplished on your own away from your parents. IMO it sends the wrong message to bring someone with you but thats just me.

I disagree. My fiance came with me to interview day and I think, rather than showing my lack of independence, it showed that we are committed to this med school endeavor together. Plus, if his income and lifestyle is going to contribute to my success, he has every right to be there, especially to hear about the financial aid and housing. Heis going to uproot his life to move to a new area, so should be able to make the decision with me.

Perhaps bringing your mom to the interview day would be different, because that could represent that you are not ready to detach. Though many in my interview group travelled to TN with their parents, the moms and dads only came to the pizza night and not the interview day.

If you are planning to bring someone to the interview day, be sure to let Paul Carney know so they have a count for space in the van and for lunch. But he will tell you that your guest can go everywhere with you except for the interview itself. Hope this helps! Good luck at your interview :luck: You will do great! :hardy:

what model of tablet pc does the class of 2011 use? will the class of 2012 use the same model? also, do you guys like them?

It's all a matter of personal opinion. Obviously if DCOM is willing to accommodate SO's and parents they think it's fine and I'm 100% sure it would have no bearing on your acceptance. 👍

To me, it seemed analogous to you showing up at your fiancé's job interview . . . I dunno maybe some companies would think that was ok?

Trust me, I'm not judging you or your decision to bring your fiancé to the interview.

I also think there is a big difference between bringing your Mom/Dad vs. your SO. 🙂

We use the Gateway M-285 or something like that. I am very happy with it....the only problem is that its pretty heavy. Other than that....its great. I don't know if you guys will get the same one or not. I imagine they will talk to the IT guys to see what problems people had, as well as talk to the students to get their opinion on how they worked....and make a decision from there. My guess is that they will make a decision some time over the summer...or near the end of the semester.

I am going to try my hardest to convince LMU to have thinkpads x61 as our class of 2012 notebook

I can also make a petition if people are willing to sign?

thinkpads are much more reliable, lighter, and more durable than any other computer out there...hands down

I think bringing a fiance/spouse is great..and it does show that you as a couple are dedicated to the school and support for medical students' spouses is very important as well. In fact, many schools have certain programs and associations spouses can get involved with, so they can also feel they are a part of the school system in some way as well

However, I think bringing a boyfriend/girlfriend is not proper, but that's just me 🙂

Those are amazing computers, but I dunno if DCOM would go for a computer without a built-in optical drive. They have to load all 160 comps with a good amount of special software. It would be a bit of a hassle (&cost) to buy a bunch of docking stations.

But I agree, you can't do better than a thinkpad.

Actually, you wouldn't need an optical drive to load all the programs. USB external HD's work just as good with ISO software...basically it creates an image of a cd/dvd so you can use it from a harddrive instead of physically putting in the cd/dvd.

I personally think the optical drives waste more battery and are really unnecessary...I mean..how often do you use yours? perhaps to load some programs and to watch dvd's right?

Just use an external DVD player for loading programs (they are ~$30)...and maybe we shouldn't be watching dvd's while in med school 😉 and if you really want to....just rip it on to your HD

Dock's are also unnecessary, unless you prefer to use an external monitor..and you could do that without a dock as well

Personally, I think pro's of having a thinkpad outweigh the 2 cons you just mentioned

Yeah, good point. I never load software but watch a lot of dvds (not much else to do here! 😀).

I wanted to chime in on this subject, I am not a big fan of Gateway I never have been since I owned one years ago. This laptop has performed better than my previous Gateway but several students, myself included, have had problems with theirs. These problems have ranged from the pens failing at an amazing rate (I know someone on their 6th pen), to someone else who has had to have the whole computer replaced at least once. IMO and several people in class these computers are not top of the line...not even close. That being said I know the school is trying to get different computers for your class. I have heard Dell as a maybe but do not quote me on that. They are also trying to set it up for our class to buy new computers for next year. Your best bet if you really want a straight up to date answer is to call and ask. Do keep in mind on our computers we have a 4 year complete replacement plan so if something breaks or goes wrong you take it to the tech crew and they are great about fixing the problem or replacing the part. If the whole computer has to be replaced it is done with in 24 hours I believe. Personally though my computer has become an extension of me...I take it everywhere so even 24 hours without it would send me into withdrawls! lol

I hope this answers some of your questions.

I say we screw the whole pc thing and get macs!

I have also heard the same. That is why I reccomend the thinkpad tablet. My friend also has a gateway tablet and complains about it all the time. The primary complaint is that the computer is just too darn heavy and that tablet feature fails randomly.

As for the macs.....😱

Mac's rule!
How about a mac petition?

🙂

I doubt they would ever do that since it's such a new concept for mac. I'm sure they wouldn't want to have a staggered class, where one class uses pc's, while the other macs.

Too many support issues unfortunately

I'd totally be up for a Mac I have one at home but I agree on the tech issues having two different systems and all of our lectures are in powerpoint so the software would cost extra to run that. What a nice dream though!

do we buy the computers, like the cost of them built into tuition so we physically own them ourselves, or are they technically the schools?

How many 2 room apartments are available? How many of the current class live in LMU housing?

At least for us, our computers are ours as long as we graduate. But we got ours on a grant. For you guys, I imagine that since you are paying for them, that they are yours, but I don't know for sure. The machine may be yours, but I don't know about software issues/licenses, etc.

How many 2 room apartments are available? How many of the current class live in LMU housing?

As for the number of people in there, I don't know.

For all the current LMU DCOM students, how did DCOM handle financial aid for the first year? Were you all eligible right away or did you have to wait a couple of months to get federal aid? I'm a bit confused at how PNWU and RVU are saying that they are eligible for aid at different time points so I was wondering at how a new school does this?

I 😍 my MacBook! I'm bringing mine with me, but I guess it's going to stay at home and look pretty on my desk.
Hahaha, me too! But I was thinking of getting the parallels program that you can boot up in windows with and just put the needed lectures and stuff on there so I can bring my mac to class with me 🙂. It wont have the tablet feature, but it wont be a pc either 🙂. I dunno though... maybe I will be taking a bunch of notes and will need to tablet function. I know that in undergrad at least I never really took too many notes, because it kept me from focusing on what was being said.

RVU is a for profit school, so their time lines will be completely different.

PNWU should be in the same boat DCOM was this past August since it is non-profit. The way they were talking to us there will be no delay in the financial aid for the second year. As for the first year, I'm not sure.

We are eligible for loans right away. Once the Fin Aid office gave us their preferred lenders list, we were able to apply for loans that day if you wanted. The same should be true for you guys, so just wait until Pat Peace sends you guys that info. Also, when it comes out, I don't know (just to answer the question before it gets asked).

As for washington and RVU, the reason their fin aid is kinda messed up is b/c they are brand new schools with no university affiliation, meaning they are not hooking up with a university, or other instituition, that is already running. Since DCOM is part of LMU, we didn't need to go thru the waiting period, or whatever it is, that makes those other 2 schools not eligible for federal loans, etc. I don't believe it is tied to RVU's profit status, altho I do appreciate the dig :meanie:

Edit: I was looking at the posts on the washington school and Tachy has some interesting info. It does, at least right now, look like it is partially tied with RVU's for profit status as to why it takes them longer to get federal loans. Altho I don't want to get into the politics of RVU, I just can't believe a school would be willing to go thru all of these hoops, extra rules, and issues to be a for-profit school. Just not worth it to me and seems complicated and confusing. I'm happy that we didn't have to go thru all that jazz setting up DCOM.

I can also make a petition if people are willing to sign?

Let me assure you, the tech guys have plenty to do than receive emails or petitions on what computers you want, I would definitely not email Dr. Leo or any of the admissions personnel about this issue. They are busy as well.

Also, understand that you are accepted, but you are not a student until you sign in on day one of orientation, so your petition probably would not carry too much weight, maybe a single e-mail to the IT department would be okay, but more would be uncalled for. They also have to balance what is needed and cost.

Another method might be to ask one of the current students to suggest a specific model.

We have to have the Vpad program in class in case we do in-class quizzing, so you would prolly need to have the notebook at school. Although, the quality of the Gateway isn't that great, I haven't had too many problems except for the popping off of my left control key. However, I love being able to write notes onto the powerpoints.. I'm a sucky typer, so if we didn't have this feature I would be printing off notes to write on. I would never do that again now that I'm spoiled with the notebook!😍

Great..... There is a reason I switched to a mac. It was so I didnt have to put up with pc crap anymore... *sigh* Oh well.... The macs are much nicer for making videos and stuff on though 🙂. Like the kick butt ones we are gonna be putting together.....

Do you really think that is the case? I already spoke with Dr. Leo about this and he was very welcoming and warm to the idea. In fact, he said they still have not decided and they are looking for suggestions

In regards to that we are not LMU students till orientation...kinda rough huh?

We have already paid our deposit, sent in housing deposit, etc. I would say we are 100% committed and our petition should carry weight...if not...I would need to question if LMU is the school for me

I doubt there are enough students that have used a tablet to be able to give a recommendation as to which would be the best, thus, we would be signing a petition blindly. I have never used a tablet, but I personally have had just as much trouble with my IBM T42 Thinkpad as I did with any Dell or Compaq I have owned. I have never owned a Gateway either, but I have heard enough complaints in the past from friends and family to keep me from buying one.

I would imagine they will choose the PC that is most cost-effective in terms of both actual cost and time spent fixing them. I know that Dell recently released a tablet and that they are known to give really good bulk-order discounts, so I wouldn't be surprised if we ended up with those.

People usually think thinkpads are much more expensive than other notebooks. Though, generally, that is the case, Lenovo has been dropping prices on their notebooks like crazy...you could get a fully loaded x61 tablet for around ~$1000 believe it or not...

Of course, you don't have to sign the petition and I would never want you to sign it blindly.

I really recommend people browse http://forum.tabletpcreview.com/forumdisplay.php?f=1027 so they can get a general feel of which tablet pc is the most highly regarded

quality does not always come with a sky high price

anyone else in the IT field that can vouch for any other tablet?

Dr. Leo is a great individual, and I can't see him telling anyone to leave him alone, because he is too busy. But you should take into consideration that he is a Dean and in charge of admissions. So he is not only very busy, but I do not think he has much to do with the computer decision (I could be wrong since I have not asked him directly). So take that into consideration prior to contacting him about this. I am sure he will just tell you thanks, and that he will forward it to the IT people.

No, not rough at all in stating that you are not students yet. I worked here for part of the summer doing dissections, and we were informed of our status of not being students yet. The point behind that statement was that until day one when you sign in, why should they take into account what you petition for? You could get your way with the petition and then attend another school, or not get your way and choose another school. Even if a deposit was sent in, things change.

Now, I did not say not to send in an e-mail with a recommendation or to ask, let's say Nascardoc, to make the suggestion. I just said that the admissions staff is very busy, so think twice about taking their time away for something they have no control over.

anyone else in the IT field that can vouch for any other tablet?
One of our other developers uses a Toshiba. His last 2 have both been Toshibas (so I guess he likes them), but I did hear him admit that he wished he would have tried the Thinkpad

And I agree that it is probably some combination of a financing department along with the IT department that will make the determination of which computer to get, so it probably wouldn't help to bug Dr. Leo or the admissions staff about it
