Do you guys have a garage? I've been thinking if my car will be ok in the winter, being outside and all.

No garage 🙁 but you will be fine. There isn't much of "winter" here. My car saw more snow during spring break last week in Chicago than all of winter here in TN. You may have a dusting of snow here and there, but it melts right away, so no worries about that. I saw them lay salt, maybe once, but I don't know, it may have been sand. As for my car, most of my driveway is under a tree with a lot of birds, so I avoid the "bombs" by parking in the only open spot I have, which is the farthest from the door......go figure. But your baby will be just fine in the "winter." 👍

YEY! We'll be twins! I'm really loving my new baby, but I'm so paranoid about it being parked on my street (in the middle of San Francisco 😱)! I think I'm going to drive it down to san Diego in a couple of weeks so it can rest in my parents garage until I get there in June.

That's a great idea I would have never left mine on the street when it was new. I washed it like every other week..ah the good old days.
Mine will be the one with AZ plates and yours with CA plates..so I don't get into the wrong car on those sleep deprived days!!!

I knew about the physical and immunizations because I read it in the Handbook, but I didnt know we had to get a drug test and criminal background check on our own too... I haven't really received anything from DCOM except some stuff about filling out my FAFSA...

Man, everyone is getting pretty new cars, Im jealous! I just paid my Nissan Sentra off so I think Im stuck with it for awhile even though I hate it. I just need to get my drivers side window fixed because it got stuck on Sunday and wont go up 🙁 They want to charge my like $500 to fix it at the dealership so I need to find somewhere else where they wont steal my money!!

I knew about the physical and immunizations because I read it in the Handbook, but I didnt know we had to get a drug test and criminal background check on our own too... They will send you 2 packets in the mail. A matriculation packet (with all the info on immunizations, drug test, criminal background check, etc) and a financial aid packet, which it sounds like you already got. You should get the matriculation packet soon. I got mine a couple of weeks after paying my deposit.

Does anyone know if there are good trails that allow mountain biking in the area? I used to be really into that before I moved to the flat-land. I'm definitely looking forward to the hiking trails that will be so close. I've gotten used to traveling to get to decent hiking trails.

96% of the hiking trails are mountain biking trails too. Unless they specifically say (and most dont) that you cant ride bikes on them, they are fair game. And there are plenty of biking trails around. We will just have to find them. I'm stoked about that. I plan on doing that the two weeks I'm up there before school though.

Definitely give Janette a call in the admissions office. I found that they forgot to send immunization/tech standards/etc. packet to my entire interview group! 😱 I got it 2 days after calling.

Only about 15-20 students use the cafe regularly, altho it can be frequented by others at times. Most either bring lunch, go home, or go out.

As far as cable, I have no idea...I think that it is just basic cable tho, if that helps.

This is a FYI completely unrelated to anything that has been posted lately. For those of you, with out a doubt, class of 2012 'ers....Book your hotel rooms for family/friends coming here for your white coat ceremony ASAP. I tried to book rooms in mid-July when I got here and all hotels were booked for that weekend (and stayed booked). I thought I read somewhere your ceremony would be October 18th but do not use that as reliable info. Even of your not sure how many people book some rooms or you will have people on your floor.
Don't forget there is Cumberland Gap Inn in Cumberland Gap (just below the DCOM apartments) it is a really nice place and often over looked.

Good point. You are correct, it is on October 18th. 👍 I had my family book rooms 3 weeks ago because I called the school and found out the date for the ceremony. They're staying at the Ol' Mill Bed and Breakfast, which looks super cute!

A question for all of you current students that have cars and are not TN natives. Did you have to register your car when you moved out there? I know in CA students don't have to register their car if they don't plan on becoming a permanent resident. I remember seeing lots of different plates on cars in the DCOM parking lot. Does the same go for your drivers license? Thanks!

I still have my IL drivers license and have not registered my car, but my legal residence is still in IL. Once our freaking condo freaking sells (can you tell I'm bitter 😳), then our legal residence will be here in TN, so then I assume I will have to get a TN license and register my car.

One word of warning to those that have purchased new cars just before moving here. If you move here too soon after buying said car/boat/motorcycle, etc...they may try to charge you the difference between the sales taxes you paid where you bought it and the tax you would have paid if buying it in TN when you go to register.

They tried to make me pay sales tax on our Waverunner that we bought in 2005 when I went to register it last summer after moving here.

For some of you that are not planning to register it here, this won't be a problem, but I wanted to give a heads up that they MAY try.

What's really bothersome, is one office insisted that I had to pay this difference in taxes, while another one I went to said the first one was completely mistaken and that I did not need to...so it appears that there's some real inconsistencies with how things are done.

Other than that little snafu that I averted, I LOVE having my personal property tagged in TN. The tags and registration are DIRT cheap compared to where I moved from, AND there's no Personal Property taxes!

Are you sure your taste buds havent gone bad with age? Marble slab is always better to me when I go vs. Cold Stone. It just doesnt taste as good....
