That's going to be some drive, huh? I'm leaving on July 22nd! Who's going with you? Mom or Dad or Adolfo?

My mom. I cant take Adolfo, he wont be able to buy me all kinds of stuff for my apartment like my mom will 🙂 Im hoping that when she leaves he will come fly out, but we'll see... Who you coming with?

Y'all have excellent birthdays, ya hear??
I really mean that!
Good luck and hope to be seein' all y'all soon!

I'm sorry things have taken so long (I know I have nothing to do with the personally, but still....the waiting sucks). Things have been kinda crazy at school (we just finished our first system...woo hoo!!!) and I know Dr. Stowers hasn't been around too much, and when he is, he is swamped with all kinds of stuff. I think out of the last 4 weeks, he has been out of town for at least 2 of those weeks. He was at school today, but was in meetings all day. We had to wait a few extra days for grades b/c we needed him to sign off on everything. I know you don't want to, but just keeping hanging in there.....don't get discouraged or assume the worst. I look on here all the time justing waiting to hear...I really hope you guys get some good news, especially after this long wait. Again, I am really surprised that things are so behind, it's not like DCOM, but it'll get there....I promise!!!

thank you so much for the encouraging words, Nascardoc!
hanging on by a string
would rather be hiking Cumberland Gap about now
there's a few of us who have not been either waitlisted or declined yet who are just out there twisting in the wind....
i'm sure it will be soon.

It's my understanding that if you get the interview, you will not be declined just yet. I interviewed on 3/7 and received my wait-list letter last Saturday (3/29), so check your mail today. I was told that this late in the game, the admissions committee is being very conservative with acceptances. No longer are they taking ~50% of the interviewees but much less. At this point they are turning away a lot of qualified applicants who, if interviewed earlier in the year would be shoe-ins.

If wait-listed, do not get discouraged because it is not a polite rejection (as I initially thought). It's a wait and see. They have tons of applications more this year than last and are playing it safe. If mid-May comes up and they have only 130 seats full, the alternate list will come into play, not to mention those who forgo their seats after a deposit. In short, an acceptance would be wonderful, but the wait-list is not the end of the road. Good luck to all those who will hear anything soon and those left to interview. To those already in, hopefully you'll be seeing me soon.

i wouldnt definitely call them. i got my letter last saturday and we interviewed the same day. i was waitlisted if you didnt see my earlier post...so i'm assuming everyone should have heard from our group by now, but i could be wrong. but seeing as people who interviewed after us have also heard...i would call if i were you

I'm in the LMU-DCOM class of 2011. I own a home in Harrogate, TN but will be gone for the summer. I'd like to find someone interested in a place to stay for the entire months of June & July. There will be some important responsibilties for you to handle while we're gone, but you might be pleasantly surprised about the monetary cost to you. Serious inquiries only -please email [email protected]

Thanks for the advice! The link has been very helpful. My interview is right around the corner and I'm trying not to get too nervous.. :scared:

Aw, you'll be fine! Don't worry. 🙂 I only had 2 interviews, but the one at DCOM was waaaay more relaxed and welcoming than my first one. Like other people have said, just be yourself! Don't try to rehearse any answers, tell them what they want to hear or anything like that and you'll be golden! 😉 Let us know how it goes!

Good Luck! :luck::luck:

I'll agree, I only went to two interviews. My first one was at DCOM and I loved it. The second was at NSU and I wanted to go home when the plane landed. Maimi did not make a good impression on me..........the interview wasn't too bad, I did feel somewhat like a shrimp on the grill. There was only one interviewer, out of the 5 interviewing, that I felt I made a decent impression on. I thought the other interviewers disliked me. Secondly, the students just didn't seem happy. Our guide looked VERY tired. All-in-all, it just was not the school for me. NSU did offer me an acceptance, but I declined. After that so-so experience I canceled all of my other interviews and sent my deposit to DCOM. I'm telling you, sometimes you have those gut feelings and you have to follow them.

While finding housing may be easier eslewhere I wouldn't want to go there. DCOM just seems to be special and well worth the effort to find housing. Future classes should have it easier. I have been able to run into a few poeple who have shared plans for condos and another apartment complex (besides the one that is already being built and has a line that is 3x longer than they have space for 🙁 ). Although it isn't too bad right now, I have been to a number of homes for rent that just don't work for me because I have a family.

This leads me to my question, for those making the trip from LaFollette to DCOM, how is it? I am thinking of doing this, but I'm unsure of it. I drove it today and it is around a thirty minute drive. How do this effect your study time?

Thanks for the encouragement everyone! This is only my second interview, so I guess the jitters are natural. I'm very excited about the possibility of attending this fall, but I know I'm kind of late in the game. Hopefully this factor won't hurt me too badly.

Congratulations on the interview! My hubby is interviewing on the 11th as well. Are you planning on going to the Oasis Thursday?

Thank you! Yes, I'm definitely going to be at the Oasis if at all possible, and my wife will be with me. Will you be attending with your husband?

Ok, so I gave Malisa the heads up on this first, because I know she has had a hell of a time finding a place to rent. But here it is for the rest of you all.

A doctor friend of mine who lives in Tazwell has a Psychiatrist friend who is moving to Memphis. He wanted to sell his house, but because of the market, he is interested in renting. From what he told me about it, its a three bedroom two story house, and its on the North side of Tazwell, so not more than 10-15 minute drive in the morning to DCOM, and a very easy drive at that. This is the message I sent to her.

I might have a lead for you for housing. I ran into one of the stat care doctors I worked with in the ER, and he said that a psychiatrist friend of his is moving to Memphis. He was gonna try to sell his house, but because of the market, he might possibly rent it. Its supposedly on the north side of Tazwell (the side closest to Harrogate) and its only about 10 minutes or so from DCOM.

His name is Bilal Ahmed and his number is 423.912.9576 (cell I think). Tell him you heard about it from Zak Hussain (my doctor pal).

I think he said its a three bedroom place, two story, and after that, I dont know much more about it. I know you've had some issues finding a place, especially that will take pets, and I dont know if he will or not, but I figured I would let you have first dibs in calling him. Let me know if you talk to him and what you think so I can post it up on SDN and our facebook group if it doesnt work out for you.

Any questions on who to call, or anything else, pm me. If you end up talking to him, let us know on here or on the facebook group. And let others know some details about the house if you dont want to live there, or would like to and would need some roommates.

a 30 minute drive is not going to kill, so don't worry about that. It is actually a very nice break during the day as it allows you to relax, drive and listen to music for awhile. What all of you will realize once you start school is that you will not, and don't need to, spend every waking moment studying. You will drive yourself crazy and will absolutely hate life if you do that. IMO, the major things that come to mind in terms of being a disadvantage as to being in LaFollette, the biggest is being that far away. I say this, not b/c of study time, but cost (gas) and the mileage on your car. It is about a 60 mile round trip, so 300 miles per week, minimum. Also, with the distance, it makes going to people's houses in harrogate cumbersome sometimes, but overly not a huge deal. During the week, you will be at school anyway, so the only time you have to think about things is during the weekend. When I lived in LaFollette for the first 2-3 months of school, I usually spent saturdays at school and sundays at home. Also, we when drive in on test days, make sure to leave earlier than normal to minimize chances of being late for whatever reason. Overall, living in LaFollette is really nice and not a big hinderance, but do realize that you will be making some sacrifices by living that far away....and don't ever leave anything at home 😉. If you are planning on living there b/c you are married and spouse will be working in K-ville, cool....but if you are single, I would recommend trying to find something closer to school....thats from my own experience living both in LaFollette and then Harrogate. You definitely are able to do more with more people when you live closer to school.

THANKS Rose, I'll be trying to get in touch with him first thing in the morning.

Thanks nascardoc, that is along the lines of what I was thinking. I'm going to keep looking for some place closer to the school.

 Yep! I wasn't sure if anyone would get that or not.

i have mad skillz. hahahaha. funny i actually remembered that b/c people don't appreciate how important delaware is. i mean, i come from there. haha

Oh are y'all fixin up your house this weekend? That sounds fun. 😀 I wish I could join you, but it would take me 3 days to drive out there. 😉

Well the house is in pretty good shape, it's just that the office was formerly a 3-yr-old's Disney princess bedroom and, while I adore Cinderella, I thought the blinding pink walls would make it difficult to study 😛 So now it's a nice, calming light brown.

Wish you could have helped! You would have loved the neighbors...

Your neighbors are awesome!! Can I bring my dog up to see if she will herd them like she is supposed to do since she is a cattle dog?

Lol, awesome! I've only been shot at a few times.... 😉.

Oh, and pm your aim sn if you have one. We are forming a chat group.

Does anyone know exactly how many seats are still up for grabs at this point?

 That's so funny about the Disney princess bedroom! You should have kept it as our super secret clubhouse. 😉

Awww, I see you have some of my friends as neighbors! Tell them I said Mooooo. 😀

What the heck? 😱 I'm gonna need to hear that story!
Lol, we just werent supposed to be riding dirtbikes in that field I guess... 🙂. I wish it was a "mad dad ran me off with a shotgun" kind of story, that would be cool. My mom's dad actually chased my dad with a gun when they were first dating one time in Germany.

I interviewed on 3/28 and we were told that there were around 30 seats left. But we were also told that due to spring break our files would not be looked at for a couple of weeks. So after the pile of around 30 interviewers, there are probably a few left i would think ??.... but u cant have mine.

sheruns and I both interviewed on 3/11. Neither one of us have heard back yet although there are 2 other people who interviewed with us that recieved waitlist letters last week. If you call Paul Carney, he will look up your file and it's status. Mine was "sent back to committee" and I am hoping that that is not a bad thing but a very good one. 😳
good luick!

My guess is that since its up for committee review, its not a bad thing.

im in the same situation as you (sent back for further review)........im guessing our files were reviewed by the admissions committee last thursday 4/3????

alicat318---any idea when we are supposed to here back now?

I'll throw my $0.02 out here for ya guys...and this is my opinion, nothing from admin or anyone from DCOM, no inside information (sorry)...just my feelings on the whole situation.

I think they are going to be very picky since they are winding down with the number of seats left for the Class of 2012. That is probably why we haven't seen many acceptances posted on here in awhile. I think they want to make sure they get who they want, so they are going to take the time needed to evaluate all those who interview. Do I think it is a bad thing you guys keep going back to committee, no b/c they are still looking at you. Without knowing how many seats are left (and I truly have no idea), how many people are still deciding, and how many are still to interview, its hard to say when decisions are going to be coming down. I guess the adcom doesn't want to spread itself too thin, so unfortunately, the waiting game it is....and even though it sucks, at least you are in it.

The thing I am going to be very curious about is how active the waitlist is going to be this year. I think we had 20+ people in the Class of 2011 from the waitlist, but I imagine it will have had more movement than this year's b/c DCOM is no longer in its inaugural year, so people are going to feel more secure about their choice. Again, this is only a guess on my part and I could just be talking out of my a$$ too. Oh well, wouldn't be the first time :meanie:

BTW, I got to use the sim lab today for our group's first simulation..and it was freaking awesome. Its amazing!!! You have to talk to the simulator like a real patient, they answer back, you get lab tests, imaging results......everything is just like real life!!!!!!!! It was really intense too b/c it crazy how your mind blanks out the first time you do the scenario. Drug names slip your mind, basic things even slip your mind. It is definitely one of the greatest teaching tools I've ever seen and it teaches you lessons you will never forget. I can't wait to use them more....woo hoo!!!!!!! 😀 👍

This feels like I'm sort of sliding down a slippery slope. Not knowing is eating me alive!!!
I just don't understand what is taking so long. I figure it's a test of my ability to persevere in the midst of stress. I'm holding up OK but my walls are starting to get pretty bare from all the scratch marks.

Thank you Rose. Alicat and I are just out there with no idea what our fate is. It's a pretty tough and strange situation! You're the best!😍OK, OK, because you're so nice, I promise I won't make you eat tunafish sandwich ice cream, or even a tunafish ice cream sandwich.

Don't worry sherruns... at a few other schools, my application has been "going back to committee" for over seven months now! Especially at this late in the game, anything is better than a rejection. Here's hoping good news comes your way this week!👍

Wow really? That's just amazing. I didn't even know that this was part of the process! Guess my hands will keep getting flatter and flatter as I keep sittin' on them and sittin' on them. I may get up the gumption to call Paul Carney tomorrow although I bet he's plenty harassed. Lots of decisions, not that much time, lots of Nervous Purvises and Nervous Nellies out there:scared:. Me included!
Thanks for the thoughts and have a great week Missdochopeful!

i read on facebook that finacial aid packets are due in two weeks. i kinda remember getting something about financial aid but i didnt think we had to send anything back. rather, i thought we just had to fill out a fafsa and have it sent to DCOM. is my memory that bad already? probably not a good sign entering med school.

yeah, i am a little freaked out i forgot about the financial aid stuff. i swear everything was due in july. i just got back to campus and now gotta drive back to my house and read all the info again....can't make a stupid mistake now. lol
