LMU-DCOM (DeBusk COM) Discussion thread Part 2 2007-2008

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
i read on facebook that finacial aid packets are due in two weeks. i kinda remember getting something about financial aid but i didnt think we had to send anything back. rather, i thought we just had to fill out a fafsa and have it sent to DCOM. is my memory that bad already? probably not a good sign entering med school.

Yep, that's all you had to do for the Financial Aid packet. 👍

The matriculation packet is the one that's due in July and you have to send in a whole bunch of paperwork (doctors signature for your physical, blood titers, drug test, immunizations, etc.).

My guess is that since its up for committee review, its not a bad thing.

thank you so much. you are really sweet.
i just wish that i wouldn't have told people to begin with how soon i was supposed to find out because now not only am i going nuts...people (family, classmates, friends, teachers ets....) are driving me nuts asking about my status. and i have no answer.
in a sick way it is comforting to come on here and know that i am not alone. man, i love ya'll for that😉

im in the same situation as you (sent back for further review)........im guessing our files were reviewed by the admissions committee last thursday 4/3????

alicat318---any idea when we are supposed to here back now?

oh wow..already? good call!

Hi guys, I was wondering if u all happened to know how many interviews/seats are left?

I kinda wanna know b/c I'm still waitlisted and have been since my interview in December. I'm just trying to somehow trying to gauge my chances for getting an admission at DCOM.

Its been my only med school interview so far, so yeah, kinda nervous 😕

I think one of the earlier posts said they had about 30 seats left, but I may have made that up. If it helps any, two of the students that had lunch with us during our interview were both waitlisted when they applied. One was accepted I think six weeks before classes started and one was accepted three weeks before. So, I know it probably sucks to be waitlisted for this long, but hang in there.

Just out of curiosity, anyone from the 3/25 interview group hear back yet?

Just heard from Paul Carney that my wait will be at least until next Monday or Tuesday, possibly Thursday if I wait for snail mail. He is off to Osteopathic Convention in St. Louis all week and so is Dr. Stowers. New news for all of us waiting out there in lala land. I'm gonna keep the faith.😀

Did you email him?

Monday would be a fabulous day to get accepted!! 😀:luck:

FYI to everyone waiting to hear:

I worked up the gall to call Dr. Leo the other day and he advised theres about a dozen or so seats left and that they would be meeting to start looking at the waitlist in about 2 wks. I interviewed 12/7 and this has just been miserable waiting. In response to what nascardoc said about the waitlist, Dr. Leo said he expects it to move quite a bit because of people pulling out to save money for in state schools. Example: Person X gets accepted last minute to their instate school at 23k/year, so to them losing a 2k deposit is still cheaper in the long run. Anywho, that's how Dr. Leo explained how/why the waitlist will move and that I shouldnt check into the nuthouse quite just yet.

In happier news, I took PALS yesterday and got to practice doing emergency I.O. access in on chicken drumsticks. Its going to be about a month before I can look at chicken the same!

Not surprised with this number of seats left. We still have some interviewing to do too, so we will have to see what happens. In reference to my post about the wait-list, I agree with what Dr. Leo said and there will be movement for sure. I am just guessing as to the amount of movement in terms of will we see the same number of people taken in off the list as last year. I am guessing that a major reason why people opted out last year was b/c it was a first year school, but since this is no longer the case, that it is less of a reason for someone to give up their spot. But we will definitely see people go to state schools, etc. rather than DCOM. So I was not questioning if there will be movement, only how much movement, and again, it is only a guess, so please take it with a grain of salt.

For you guys on the waitlist, don't give up at all. Keep DCOM updated with grades, additional LOR's, LOI, etc. to let them know you are very interesting in attending. It can't hurt you, so do what you need to stay updated with them. Good luck to you all, and more so for those still awaiting acceptance decisions. I look on here everyday to see if it has happened yet, so hopefully next week. GOOD LUCK!!!

I would say most of the waitlist movement occurs right around 05/07 because that is when most people finalize their decision

I was told that I was in the #1 spot in mid july of 2007 for the class of 2011, however, i never ended up getting it because no one that late in the game will change their minds ( I was hoping for at least 1)...but it didnt happen.....every single person showed up during the 1st day of orientation

I'm just happy they extended an acceptance for the class of 2012...

ND- Thanks for all your encouraging words! Hopefully you will be right and we will see that waitlist shake up a little bit!

So I'm guessing that this weekend will probably be the last of the interviewing . . . . And if they are going to let the wait list people know by next week then those that interview this weekend (my hubby and JoshKent that I know of) will probably find something out by then too??????

When they called to invite me to interview I was give the choice of this Friday and two later dates. Therefore, I'm quite sure that they are interviewing through the end of April. If squad41 is right in saying that there are only a dozen or so seats left, I'm curious to see if we'll actually hear anything before the end of the month. However, I hope that you're right DanaRenee about finding out next week.

DCOM is interviewing thru the end of April, so there are going to be more interviewees than acceptances left. This is probably why they are waiting before handing out acceptances. If they give everything away and somebody comes in and knocks their socks off, but they can't give them a spot, then it sucks for the school. So I really think they are going to be waiting awhile and seeing what comes across their table. Does that mean they won't be calling anybody until the end of the month...no b/c they can give an acceptance whenever to whoever. They probably want to make sure they have enough seats for the students they really want. But again, its only a guess.

Hey guys!!! I haven't been on in awhile, but wanted to tell you about a few things we've been doing to get you excited for next year.

UAAO (Undergraduate American Academy of Osteopathy) Convocation was a couple of weeks ago over our spring break. We had 8 students and 2 professors go to Dallas for almost 5 days of lectures, workshops, and good times. We learned lots and got to network with other students and DO's who love and use OMT. It was a life changing experience and really made me realize how lucky I am to be a a future DO and be able to have OMT in my bag of tricks. Next year Convo is in Little Rock, so we will be able to car pool and drive and stay in a cheaper hotel to cut down costs. Since it will be more affordable it will allow a lot more people to go from both our classes. Also, really exciting is that our DCOM-UAAO Vice pres was elected to be National Coordinator for UAAO. She will work with other national officers and act as a liaison between the AAO and individual UAAO chapter coordinators..
Here is the UAAO website: http://www.academyofosteopathy.org/UAAO/index.htm

.
Medwar was this past weekend and it was freakin awesome too. For those of you who haven't heard of it, Medwar is an Adventure Race for med students, interns, and docs to gain experience in Wilderness Meds and CMEs. The one we attended was part of the Mid-Atlantic Medwar and took place in Newport News, VA close to Virginia Beach. It was a 7 hour long race consisting of 2 Orienteering loops, a mountain biking loop, and a canoe loop in which we located points, answered wilderness meds related questions, and took part in scenarios where we demonstrated how to treat things like, hunting accidents, lightening strike, and avalanche victims. We had a great time camping while we were there and the 11 of us that went are definitely planning on doing more of them in the future. Hopefully at least one a semester.
Here's the Medwar website: http://www.medwar.org/

During the same weekend as Medwar was SOSA convention. Student Osteopathic Surgery Association in Fort Lauderdale. I didn't go, but heard that everybody had a great time.. maybe somebody who went can put something up about it?

Anyway, GET EXCITED 2012!

Good luck to everybody waiting to hear back from the ADCOM... I've got all of my fingers and toes for you guys!:luck::luck::luck::luck:

Get excited everybody!

So fellow railsplitters (i think thats the "mascot" for LMU) already at DCOM, are you guys going to take both the COMPLEX and USLME or just pick one? also, what fields are you interested in?

Yeah, but this one is so much more fun. Can we move this one to Osteo next year? Please???? *elbows Cassrae and Prions to bat eyelashes and use puppydog eyes*

Hey you all,

I commission in May as 2LT in the army and only have a 1yr ed delay to get into medical school so i'm a little nervous.....
Thanks

... and as usual for our buddy CamelJockey, this has already been discussed on page 43 😛

yes, My hubby told me last night that he had also been given several dates to choose from til late April. so what Nascardoc said makes sense in that it still might be a couple of weeks before the 4/11 interviewees hear, unless they just know for sure they want you.

We only looked at one house there and it seemed like your typical small town. Of course when I googled it wondering the same thing a few months ago, I found this forum:

http://www.topix.com/forum/city/new-tazewell-tn/TDQ5KTATJTD4UOGOO

Some of the posts on there are just ridiculous though, so I wouldn't base your research on that!
If I based my research on that, I wouldn't move to tazewell, harrogate, or middlesboro! Those guys think everyone is a racist and drug addict, from tazewell all the way to middlesboro.

Oh man, oh man, cameljockey! You be needin ta do some research bout this shiz, you feel me? 😉

This topic is discussed A LOT on the osteo boards, so check it out. 👍

In short, you will have to take the COMLEX, since you will be a DO. It's not a "one or the other" type of deal. It's up to you if you want to take the USMLE if you are interested in applying to MD residencies that require the USMLE (because not all of them require it, some will take the COMLEX).

Good Luck :luck:

no one can resist that...

I'm planning on taking both. I think we definitely have to take the COMLEX, but I want to keep my options open for both. Should be a hell of a grind next summer preparing.

most of the top/competitive residencies will want you to take the USMLE so if you plan on the ROAD you will probably take both.

many, but not all allopathic programs allow some type of "conversion" of the COMLEX so you don't necessarily have to take the USMLE to get accepted to an allopathic residency....

Recently as of 2005, the AOA president voted to block a universal system where any comlex can be converted into USMLE universally......but the AOA elderly elite are very determined to keep the COMLEX and USMLE in seperate fields, not being able to intertwine with each other to benefit DO students....kind of stinkss for students...but they are determined to keep the individual identity of DO's...which I don't mind at all

Yes sir, indeed you do have to take the COMLEX. 👍

we must take comlex. usmle is a good idea. very few allo residencies will "convert", regardless of what you hear. they dont know what the hell to do with the score, its on a totally different scale, and oh yeah it has some stuff that IS NOT on the USMLE (called OMT or something). Take them both, bite the bullet, you'll be smarter and have more character because of it. Concerning waitlist movement - there is no "single day" of movement like someone said there was, thats a pretty common myth. Its a pretty constant trickle from what I understand. Some of my best friends were not admitted until around mid-july. Stop speculating about when maybe things might happen, gather up some intestinal fortitude and CALL. They can give you info on how many spots are left, when they are meeting, etc. Just call one time, they are kinda busy. If you call weekly, you are neurotic and will not be admitted. I do hope everyone is enjoying their time in limbo (if accepted) and I hope for the best for those of you still waiting. Good luck.
