LMU-DCOM (DeBusk COM) Discussion thread Part 2 2007-2008

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I've heard from friends and other med students that lectures are a waste of time. Instead they read the material and notes (if provided) and study at home vs. sit in lecture. That's scary to me, but I've always been a get up and go to class (hmmmm...) what I mean to say is that the act of going to class kept me on the ball in undergrad. What methods do you med students find most helpful?!

p.s. thanks for the input in advance 🙂

to LauraDO!!! Yay!!! How exciting! You'll have to let us know how it goes! :luck::luck:

Can anyone tell me more about meeting for pizza the night before the interview? Is that still going on? I read somewhere that I'm supposed to RSVP but I don't know who I'm supposed to tell. I'm sure it's here somewhere, but there are SO many posts!

Today was my first interview offer at LMU-DCOM, so I'm still new at this! Thanks 🙂

i dont think you have to rsvp for the meeting at the oasis, you just show up and look for the table with the dcom sign. good luck at your interview! by the way, nice name. i like your style.

Oops, haha... I guess I'm not very original 😛 Thanks for your response!

well you could skip class at DCOM and watch the lectures on video and not feel guilty! 🙂

Well I was excited to be accepted. I was gonna make due with whatever I got of course. But now I have the option and I had such a better feeling about DCOM. It's a little bit of a dilemma because I did get excited about going to school but now when it comes down to it I feel like DCOM is a better choice for me.
$1500 is a drop in the bucket compared to what you will be spending on tuition through 4 years of school. That's like 1 student loan payment! Don't make your decision based upon the money (at least that small of an amount). Here's another way to look at it: I would be willing to bet that the cost of living going to DCOM is way lower than LECOM-B, I'm sure you'll have no problem making up for that $1500.

Does DCOM provide notes? or just the ppts? :meanie:
Also, does anyone have study tips for med school? What do you wish you would have known/learned ahead of time? any techniques? what is most effective?

thanks guys...sorry with all the boring questions it's just that I'm so excited and scurred at the same time!!! LOL 🙄

Laura (and anyone else that might be staying in Knoxville the night before an interview),

I would leave Knoxville no later than 7, possibly earlier...just to make sure you get there in time. The reason I say possibly earlier is because of school busses and school zones. I have to leave BY 7, or the busses and stuff really slow me down. Traffic probably wouldn't be a huge problem in Halls going North...as most are headed into Knoxville rather than out.

I just got back from "home" in the KC area (it was FRIGID)...looks like I missed quite a bit on here. Looks like I'm going to be resting all weekend as I've come down with a nasty cold or something.

Good news though! Got a clean bill of health at my 5 year post-Hodgkin's checkup! Just need to work on my fat. 🙂

Great MJB thanks that is helpful, Good to hear your in good health too! As someone who has also dealt with quite some serious health issues, it is always reassuring to know your on the right track!

Most of our p.points are pretty inclusive so you just have to write some stuff in as you go to better understand what was being said.. some other profs provide more thorough notes that go along with the p.points. For me the power points with my own stuff written in make up the notes that I use. Our profs give great info and provide lots of outside sources and references we can use to further our understanding, but the stuff covered in lectures is what is tested on.

It takes a lot of time to get through the material that we get. Everyone has kind of developed their own strategy, so I can only tell you what I do. I try to keep up during the week by going through the lectures that we had in class later that same day. I can tell you that it is really hard to stay caught up, especially the week after the test. I end up doing a lot of marathon study sessions on Sat. and Sun.. Its ok to take days off, but just realize that it is really easy to get behind. The more times that you can review the material, the better it sticks. Some people do better with concepts (me) and other people do better with straight memorization, so its good to know what your strengths are so you know where to spend more time. I just try to do a good job of covering all material evenly. It doesn't do any good making an A in anatomy if you make C's in everything else. During the first semester you also have to make time to go into lab to learn and review all of the anatomy structures. Anatomy takes another strategy in itself. I found that if I really spent time learning it first through notes and Netters, that I memorized the structures faster.. I think this is because you have a vocabulary base to draw from when you are staring at the bits and pieces. Because I spent more book time in anatomy, I only went to the lab once or twice a week outside the usual lab time. I found it more efficient for me. Some people do the exact opposite going to the lab nearly every day. Basically you have to find what works for you. I also think that for the first test you should go all out.. You can always scale back later. I think a lot of people don't do well on the first test because they don't pace their studying efforts and don't realize how much work it actually takes. I didn't do as well as I wanted during the first round and spent the rest of the semester making up for it. I found that after a few tests I was much better at judging how much time it took for the material covered and was also more efficient.

I think a good approach is to rewrite things in your own words.. also drawing things out works great. I love our OneNote for this! I really liked having the Netters flash cards too. I think we will have lots of good reviews and materials that we can pass down. I basically beg Nascar and Froggie for their stuff.. works for me.😍

Yes, DCOM provides you Pdf and power point slides for you to study. I don't want to refute what piratese said but i never re worded their notes or additionally drew out pictures. I don't know i never found time to do extra work..my work was to consume all the material they provided and supplement my work with some text book reading and doing questions from books i have bought. Its probably not the greatest approach since you will be compromising your overall grade on your exams but it won't fail you. I do well and understand concepts when i do questions..so its a habit of mine. I would do what you feel comfortable and less time consuming..as you will realize that time would be hard to find. I want to emphasize though that if you do a lot of practise questions from review books or other sources (like online) you will develop pattern recognition and this should fetch you long term..perhaps you will easily retain the info second year.

Congratulations, that is very good news! I think every single person in the Lincoln/Omaha area has come down with a nasty cold/cough/head thing in the last week or so. It probably spread down to St Joe's/KC.

If I remember correctly, someone asked what a "day in the life of" question about what our day is like at DCOM...and I can give a slightly different perspective..

I typically get up about 5:30 or 6 every day since my wife has to be at work about 6:30 most days...some days it's earlier. I then get ready and head to school anywhere from 6:45 to about 10 after 7..get to school and get myself set up for lectures, etc...I typically download all the ppt's the night before if at all possible..

I go to lecture, lunch, etc...like all the rest, but then at the end of the day, I would either stay late to go to the lab for an hour or so, or just head home. Then, I typically have dinner with my wife, then hit the books around 7 or so...and do that until about 11. Wash, rinse, repeat. I did stay up there on occasion to study with a group, but more often than not, I found that this hurt me because then I felt like I was getting home only to go to bed, then turn around and drive back up there.

On the weekends, I typically do NOTHING on Friday evenings...very, very little on Saturdays, and then usually would study for a bit on Sunday evenings. Now, there were some exceptions, but more often than not, I was spending time with my spouse on the weekends. If I did do some "studying" on the weekends outside of Sunday nights, it was making up study sheets while watching football, etc...

I did all the usual married dude things like running errands/doing projects, going to dinner, even going to Gatlinburg, etc...and last fall, we managed to seed our lawn, do a little landscaping, stain our fence, etc...and I did ok grade-wise. I was only really disappointed with my performance in one class, but I was happy just to pass that sucker...so I'm not too upset.

Now, I expect this semester to be a whole different animal simply because we have MANY more lectures on a daily basis and lose the anatomy lab, so I expect to not have to spend nearly as much extra time at the school (for lab stuff), but to have to spend WAY more time going over lectures, etc...

I'm hoping to learn OneNote better because I think it could be an excellent resource for some of the stuff we have coming up.

Basically, I'm just giving the perspective of someone that has a spouse at home who wants to spend time with you, etc... Essentially, all I'm saying is that it's very possible to "have a life" yet survive school. I've just found I have to be very efficient with my study time, and not waste a lot of time once I actually do sit down to try to get something done because I am on the road about 2 hours a day and spend at least an hour or so fixing dinner and eating, etc...

What I'd really like to know is how the folks with kids at home do it! Those folks truly amaze me.

Thanks t-funk!

Oh, I forgot to mention earlier that I got the Rads Dept. back home to make me a CD of all my CT scans over the years, so all my 2011 peeps can have a look at them if they want...and I figured this was the easiest way to let folks know. I haven't looked real close, but I don't think they were able to put the original diagnosis scans on the CD's, so I was a little disappointed in that.

That sounds cool. What a great way to get some good out of a crappy situation. I hope you have a huge party or something to celebrate.:clap::clap::banana:

So the waitlist does move before May/April!!! I was put on the alternate list in November and my acceptance letter was signed Jan 3rd. I had really given up hope in getting into school here because I wasn't going to wait around until May and I had gotten an acceptance to LECOM-b. Now I'm out of my LECOM deposit but I think it'll all be worth it in the long run. Anyways maybe there is hope for some other people on the waitlist.

so it sounds like you have definitely decided on DCOM?

Hey everyone,

Current students; I was wanting to know, is everything still a go for the PA program in 2009 at DCOM? I have a good friend who is very interested in being a PA and it would be good to have him at DCOM if I am there going to Med School. Just wondering what you all have heard about the program opening up? Also, what about the CRNA program?

Hey everyone. Wow, a lot has happened since I've been gone. Congrats to everyone else who was accepted! MJB congrats on the good health!

So... I'm so tempted to withdraw my apps from every other school and just to DCOM. I have an interview at KCOM on the 28th, and at PCOM philly in feb. But, I think I just want to go to DCOM. I got such good vibes while I was there.

What do you all recommend for housing though. I have 2 dogs that I really want to bring with me, so I'm leaning towards renting a house. Are there nice houses around to rent, within about 5 minutes of school?

And... since I got accepted to a school, and I'm definitely going to med school next year, I decided to spend the summer travelling in europe. I bought my eurail pass today and am buying my plane ticket next week. I'm so fricken excited!

I was going to get on earlier but got busy so I probably missed you guys if you got on earlier. Good luck Laura and Prions! Blow 'em away!

As far as I know both are still going forward as planned.

Honestly, it's something that you are going to have to figure out for yourself.

The fact that we have mandatory attendance here coupled with the fact that I've never been an auditory learner often results in me reading a textbook in class.

Anecdotally, I know people who have done well in the class that use completely different methods of studying. Interestingly, there are many in the class who try to mimic those doing well and don't do nearly as well but eventually they find what works for them.

Right off the bat, you need to figure out if you work better alone or with others. That should be the first sieve through which you derive your studying method. That's not to say it has to be an exclusive sort of thing one way or the other. But trust me, it will save you a lot of frustration if you figure this out early.

As far as the other interviews that's completely up to you. Once I got my acceptance here I turned down my other 4 interviews because I just knew I wanted to go here. It was nice because I ended up saving a lot of money and time by not having to travel all around. But again, it's up to you.

Now as far as renting with two dogs that could be a bit of trouble. I have a dog and when I was looking for a place to rent a lot of people specifically said no dogs or that they would have to be outside dogs. I lucked out and found an apartment through some really, really, really nice people who said I could have a dog because they assumed that med students would be more mature and able to take care of the place with animals. I can get their number from my roommate and PM it to you if you want. I think at the moment they're working on getting another apartment ready but I'm not sure if they have any houses available. Most places around here only do month to month so they might not have a lot to tell you at the moment but it never hurts to try. But if you can find a place that lets you have your dogs I say jump on it. I'd be so sad without my dog here.

And have fun in Europe!! Traveling really is the best idea. 👍

Hey everybody! What did everyone get for Christmas? Everyone have a good one? I got a little behind in the past two weeks. But I've been snowboarding, so I'll just have to do some reading 😉. Congrats to all the new acceptances and new interview invite.

What's the policy on guests for Pizza night?! My bf (also pre-med) is coming with me for the interview...should he come along or is that not kosher? 😛 I don't mind either way.....what do you guys think?

You should definitely bring your bf with you. The night before I interviewed one lady that was interviewing the next day brought her 2 kids and her son brought his girlfriend. We all had a good time.

Yup! I agree with Hoss. I do the pizza nights a lot, and families are always welcome.. They have great questions too!

Speaking of pizza, I wish Laura and Prions would have come! I guess I'll have to meet you guys later.

Welcome back Rose!

I wish I had been able to come too, it just seemed stupid to spend the night in a hotel being all uncomfortable when I could just sleep in my own bed and drive up from knoxville in the morning. Hopefully though, you will have all of next year to get to know me really well 🙂

It was great meeting nascar and mjb though, just everyone keep their fingers crossed from me

I hope everything went well for you! I'm sure you did just fine in your interview. Did y'all get salt and vinegar chips for lunch? I was probably the only person in our group that was excited when I saw those 🙂.

Hello everyone. I'm scheduled to interview at LMU. Does anyone know what the acceptance rate is? Also, are most of the spots filled already? According to their web site, the interviews will continue for months. I've never been to Tennessee before and am looking forward to meeting everyone. I've been told that the state is very pretty. Do the people talk with an accent? What are the interviews like? Do the interviewers talk with an accent? Hey, it wouldn't be the first time. LMU seems like a great school to me. I like the student-teacher ratio. I'm a bit worried about the interview though. My last interview didn't go well. I'm not much of a talker but more of a listener. If I get grilled again, it's going to be a bad scene. Anyway, I really hope I get in because my wife doesn't want to go to California and I probobly won't either. Has anyone else noticed how weird these e-mote things look while typing? They keep staring at me.

not sure of any of those numbers...but i think acceptance rate is probably 1 out of 2 post interview. People have a slight southern accent, but nothing too drastic or noticeable. It is VERY pretty...it is filled with rolling green mountains with amazing views. I haven't been there in the fall yet, but I can imagine that it is probably the most beautiful time of year due to autumn colors.

Regarding the interview, try not to be nervous about it. think of it has a friendly conversation rather than you being grilled. Find a connection b/w you and the interviewer(s) and explore that (do you both like skiing? racing? share a common interest? researching in the same field of research?). Just relate and be a normal person. That is what they are truly trying to find out by the interview. They want to see what kind of person you are and evaluate your personality more than anything.

Just be yourself and be honest and take some deep breathing exercises...imagine them naked...whatever it takes

Thanks Syncope, being nervous is not really a question. I will be nervous no matter what I do. In my opinion, the problem with my last interview was that I wasn't getting enough feedback from the interviewer. I didn't feel I'd enjoy studying under him because he seemed really boring. The questions were asked in a monotone voice like some kind of telephone surveyor. I'm sure this interview will go better though because I'm certain my grades are competitive. Also, picturing people naked doesn't always make everyone more relaxed. I wish someone would please tell me what to expect. Someone who attends the school probobly knows what they look for. I really want to get in to LMU, and the worst part is that I can't think of a decent back-up plan if I don't get into medical school. I'm totally freaking out.

1. RELAX
2. BE YOURSELF
3. Don't expect much "feedback". They will carry on a casual conversation with you, but it's not likely you're going to get any type of reaction (positive OR negative) based on your answers...that's just the way it is.

My interview at DCOM was quite relaxed and very conversational.

My only other suggestion is to read over the interview feedback. I think that covers pretty much everything you can expect.

TN is BEAUTIFUL...but not as pretty right now as it is in the summer/fall. I love the rolling hills though, and so far, you can't beat the weather as far as I'm concerned.

Some have a southern accent, but not many at the school, and very few of the interviewers. I find it charming, and catch myself having a slight twang from time to time since moving here. I have a twang anyway I guess, being from the plains/midwest.

I think you will find that most anyone you interview with/meet at LMU-DCOM has an engaging personality, though there is quite a diverse range of personalities.

When do you interview?

Hey Nick, really no reason to be nervous...really. I had my interview 12/11 and thought I would be nervous as well but I found that I was really having a good time. By the time I remembered I might be nervous, I was halfway through the interview. I not making this up!

Just be yourself. I prepared with possible questions and well thought out answers, which I'm sure helped me feel prepared but in the end they just wanted to get to know me and put a face and person with the application. I was surprised how quickly the time passed and would have actually liked another ten or 15 minutes.

I got the call for acceptance on 12/14, now that's fast service!

I found a couple threads on interview questions here on SDN. Those did help with preparation.

Best of luck! 😀

That's a great assessment by MJB. 👍 It truly is beautiful terrain and everyone there at LMU-DCOM is very accomodating and generally pleasant to be around. You'll be impressed without a doubt. I'd also try to be relaxed and genuine, it's easy since everyone there is the same in return.

Thanks for the help and encouragement. I am also from the Midwest and sometimes speak with a twang. I was curious about the accent because, depending on where you are, the accent can be quite different. The reason that I'm worried about not getting feedback from the interviewer is because it's difficult to know how well I'm doing, or if I'm boring them to death. Is it my job to direct the interview? I planned on speaking very little. I interview at the end of January MJB. I'll most likely go to the pizza thing. Will I see some of you there?

The reason that I'm worried about not getting feedback from the interviewer is because it's difficult to know how well I'm doing, or if I'm boring them to death. Is it my job to direct the interview? I planned on speaking very little. I interview at the end of January MJB. I'll most likely go to the pizza thing. Will I see some of you there?

After talking to Nascardoc I was not nervous for my interview at all. That kind of surprised me because at first I thought I would be terrified. It was really laid back and my interviewers were nice but didn't jump up and cheer or anything if I gave a good answer but they didn't just sit there and stare at me in silence after I answered either. I think it's not a great idea to plan on not talking very much. It is an interview after all and they can't get to know you very well if you don't want to say anything. After answering a question one of my interviewers would ask me another question or to elaborate on what I had said. I didn't feel that I was directing the interview at all. Just be prepared to answer their questions and show as much of yourself as you can even if it means talking more than you normally would. :luck:

Congrats on the interview. I can only repeat what everyone has said so far regarding the interview, but the best advice is to be yourself. Don't be fake.....be YOU. There aren't too many people at the school who have the southern twang, but there are a few, but it is easy to understand - nothing to worry about. Definitely go to the pizza thing the night before. You will get a lot of great advice, plus you can ask a lot of questions. It is completely informal, so you can ask anything. We do not report back to the adcom about you guys....so no need to worry about anything...just RELAX. There will be at least 2 current DCOM students at the pizza night, but I will make sure to be there that night, so there will be at least 3 DCOMers there then.

Good luck with everything and make sure to ask any questions that you may have.

Thanks 🙂

What's the policy on guests for Pizza night?! My bf (also pre-med) is coming with me for the interview...should he come along or is that not kosher? 😛 I don't mind either way.....what do you guys think?

So, for pizza questions -

bring all who want to come. Sig others are more than welcome - I am sure they have questions too! Just meet us there around 7ish.

RSVP is not necessary, as people will ALWAYS be there, but they are nice so we know how many people to look out for! Good luck on interviews, and happy new year to everyone!
