What's the policy on guests for Pizza night?! My bf (also pre-med) is coming with me for the interview...should he come along or is that not kosher? 😛 I don't mind either way.....what do you guys think?

I recommend all girls break up with their bf's before coming....guys...go ahead and get married. pizza night is a good time. I think oasis has the best pizza around. If we had time to drink, that would be a good place to hang out from time to time.

I also have a couple rooms for rent in my house. I'm a student right now.

hahahahah...okay, bf boycott?!?!?! LOFL 🙄 so the girls should be single and the guys married? silliness of the century...sounds like trouble to me

Not to count my chicks before they hatch but....... would you allow your renters pets? AKA very cute puppy? how far is your house from school? 😛

Well guys, I have officially withdrawn. I am so thankful DCOM gave me the chance to interview, not to mention how great it was to be accepted. You guys are all awesome and you'll have to come visit me if you're ever in AZ. 😀

Isn't he cute?!

p.s. I'm really apprehensive about bringin puppy to med school. I worry whether I will have time to really take care of him. The last thing I want to do is neglect my pup 🙁 but I really don't have an idea of what's it's like. For those who are in school and have pets, what do you think? Is it a strain? I would love to bring him with, but if it's going to hurt him in the long run I would rather find a better home here....(single tear) my bf's family loves him and is willing to keep him for me need be...

any advice would be appreciated 😀

I don't have a dog right now but am getting another one here soon. I had to put my last pup down just before I came here.🙁 Anyway there are lots of students here now that have dogs and I know lots of students in the 2012 class have dogs. Reference the LMU-DCOM Discussion thread part 1. I don't know how to link to it but you can search LMU DCOM and scroll down through the results. Anyway, starting on about page 20 there are lots of doggie pictures posted. My advise is to bring the pup and try it, you might find a walk on a local trail with your favorite furry friend is just the study break you need.

I don't know anything about the animals during med school thing but if you do take him with you maybe you should get him a friend so he won't be lonely while you're gone. 🙂

My dad bought the house and I think we would prefer no pets only because he will probably be re-selling soon and doesn't want a mess everywhere. If it was very well-trained, then maybe. I don't really know how people have time for their pets here anyway, but there are plenty of times I wish I had one.

As far as my house goes, it is in Lincoln Memorial Estates which less than five minutes from the school in Harrogate. It was basically the only really nice neighborhood around the school. I have the master bedroom and then there is a larger and smaller bedroom for rent. I might rent to people from my class, but it might be nice to have some of 2012ers living with me so I can get to know your class better and you can get other people from your class to live there after I leave for rotations.

I posted pictures on fbook a long time ago, so PM me if you want more info or i'll give you my name so you can look me up on fbook. Also feel free to PM me if anybody has any questions about the school...trust me, I had all of the same questions coming in and it was tough not having an older class to ask.

hey guys, im interviewing at LMU and wanted to know what you guys thought of the school. What kinds of questions did they ask? Were they laid back? Do you know how many more seats are left to fill?

You best bet for interview feedback is to visit the interview feedback forum here on SDN. That is where you will get a lot of questions people were asked. As for the day, it is very relaxed. The school wants to get to know you, so be yourself. Go to the Oasis pizza outing the night before your interview b/c you can meet current DCOM students, as well as those interviewing with you. The pizza night is informal and a great way to relax and get questions answered before your interview. As far as how many seats are filled, I don't know. I haven't heard any specific numbers and I don't want to speculate, but I know it is not full.

When is your interview?

He is soooo precious!
What kind of dog is he?
I have a 14 year old Black Lab and a 2 year old Jack Russell, who doubles as the pet of the Black Lab
I'm definitely renting a house with a yard if (when) I get in.
Look out, Tennessee, here I come!
Wish me luck. Two weeks and counting on the MCAT.
Planning to (in words of TexTri) "OWN" it!!

Did you get accepted to AZ? I hope so!
Good luck to you and your family!

Thank you! My interview isn't until February 29 so I won't know for a while. I'm really really hoping so though!!

How old is he? It would be hard to try and get him house broken and whatnot as a student but if he's already house and crate trained it would be much easier. I have a dog and know quite a few other students that do as well. I've taken to studying at home because it's nice and quiet and I can hang out with my dog and he's not lonely all the time. Plus if I want to study with other people one of the other students also has a dog and a house and we get together to study while the dogs play. If you think you can dedicate the time needed to keep your dog happy and not feeling too alone then I say definitely bring him. They really are great ways to take a study break. Plus there are plenty of trails if you want to take him for a run or a walk.

I'm leaning towards the interview being scheduled on Feb 1st. So I got about three weeks. I gotta fly in to knoxville and then drive up to harrogate. I'm siked I have an interview...hopefully they like me a lot. lol

Hey guys, considering the region DCOM is in, how racial diversity there? Sorry but i have some stereotypes of rural tn, which are horrible I know.

Well if they accept me, they will have a half-pakistani there who looks white.

Based on the make-up of our class, I believe they took the best 160 students they could find. I don't think there was any deliberate effort to make our class particularly diverse. They like to accept students from the area in hope of training future FPs for the area, but most decisions seem to be merit-based.

Just turned down an interview invite from DCOM. This was tough to do, because everyone on here can't seem to say enough good things about the place. However, I am solid in my decision to attend GA-PCOM, and I simply can't afford to keep traveling anyway.

If I would have chosen to attend there would have been a half Chinese half white girl who looks Hispanic.

Awwwwww mannnnnn... We would have loved to have you! I understand, though. GA-PCOM is a great school!

There isn't much diversity in the area, but that is not surprising. Will you be sneered, jeered, stared at....no. The people around here are extremely nice and I don't think you would have any problems, nor have I heard of anyone having any. I have not witnessed/heard of any of the stereo-typical southern behavior. Are there people who have issues, I'm sure, but you will find that anywhere in the country, so I wouldn't worry about it. Our class has some diversity, but I think next year's is going to be more so. I don't think anyone here feels left out or that they don't fit in, so it isn't a huge issue. A nice way of thinking about it is that you will be treading new ground and being a pioneer in more ways than just being at a new school.

sorry, I think I did some rambling in there 😳

I pretty much entirely agree...and will only add that (sadly) I've personally seen/heard more of what you are likely fearful of in my home state than I have here in TN.

Basically, it would appear to me that your stereotype and concerns are fairly un-warranted. Like ND said...I'm sure that faction of society exists here, but I've not seen it...and it exists to some extent everywhere as sad as that is.

I would suggest coming in with an open mind and not making judgements before you even come for a visit. 😉

Now, one thing I have seen is some GIANT confederate flags (and I know some people are offended by those), but even those were more in Middle/Western TN.

I'm Indian..and I did not experience any sort of funny looks or anything. People were welcoming and friendly

Yea, the only thing I can warn you about is if you are flirting with a girl at the grocery, make sure she has all her teeth first...lol...sorry, this happened to me. seriously though, the people here are great, but we really don't have that much interaction with them. It is very easy to remain inside a med student bubble... I hardly even see undergrads, much less people from around the area.

OH cool, im pakistani as well! I personally didn't get any weird looks or anything from people there when i went for my interview, butthen i was there for like half a day. But from what i read on here seems like its not a problem. Question for people who are currently living in the area, do u ahve issues wtih snakes coming inside the apart. iheard something like that and i wanted to ask if that has happened at the apartments by the campus. i have a snake phobia..im even afraid of rubber snakes so this is important for me. thanks!

I don't know the story behind that, but I wouldn't be too worried about snakes getting inside. I know 2 people who have come across some snakes in the park during the summer... but that's too be expected I guess.

as long as you're not afraid of rats, you'll be fine...hahaha, jk

Yeah, but living in the mountains will have snakes. We just have that kind of wildlife. Deer and turkey show up sometimes too. You just have to pay attention when you are out and about. Its not like they are under every stone or log you turn over though. I can count on one hand how many snakes I have seen around here in the 23 years I have lived here. And I dont live in the middle of the city either.

Congrats on the interview. I can only repeat what everyone has said so far regarding the interview, but the best advice is to be yourself. Don't be fake.....be YOU. There aren't too many people at the school who have the southern twang, but there are a few, but it is easy to understand - nothing to worry about. Definitely go to the pizza thing the night before. You will get a lot of great advice, plus you can ask a lot of questions. It is completely informal, so you can ask anything. We do not report back to the adcom about you guys....so no need to worry about anything...just RELAX. There will be at least 2 current DCOM students at the pizza night, but I will make sure to be there that night, so there will be at least 3 DCOMers there then.

Good luck with everything and make sure to ask any questions that you may have.

That's great that you'll be there. Have you been to a few of the pizza meetings? About how many interviewees show up? Could you tell me some more about the town. Is it basically a college town? Isn't most of the town's population made up of students at LMU? Is it easy to find a place to live? I will probobly need a small house if bringing all my things and animals. Two cats, big dog, and a snake.

I've been a a few of the pizza nights and the number of interviewees varies. We've had anywhere from 1-10 people show up. I would say the average, at least from the times I've been there, is about 4 or 5. I wouldn't call Harrogate a college town, that would be Knoxville near the UT campus. I would call it your average small town that happens to have a kicka$$ medical school in it 😎. LMU is pretty small with a little over 3200 students. The area is very proud of the school, but I would not call it your prototypical college town. But the school is growing at a huge rate due to DCOM. The campus is expanding with new buildings for both science/research and more dorms (not for the med school though). I would say the area is made up of a mixture of people, but I don't think it is dominated by students.

There is a post I posted about a week or so ago regarding the different cities to live in around DCOM. I will have to refer you to that post since it has a lot of info. Just click on my name, then click on "Find more posts by.....", then you will have to look for it. Or you could just go thru the pages as it should only be a page or two back from this one. It is a loooong post, so you shouldn't miss it.

BTW, if you bring the snake near me....:beat:........:boom: I don't do snakes

Now I'm off to study more microbiology :zip: (I like the new emoticons :meanie:)

Who is the better dancer  or :zip: ??????????

ohh i like the monkey, when I get accepted 😉 I want a post full of dancing banana's and monkeys

Call me old school, but I like the bananas better.

My primary was mailed on 12/27 and I still haven't received an LMU secondary, is this normal? are they email or snail mail?

thanks

That sucks man. It would have been a lot of fun to have you around...you're crazy man...you're crazy.

sounds good. i don't care for racial diversity, just rationality. lol. im really siked about the interview. does anyone have pictures of the school b/c the website hasn't been updated since the summer. thanks!

thanks so much for all the info (everyone) ! I'll definately have to think about this one.....

Also, for clarification, I am NOT accepted yet....I have an interview on Jan25th...I hope I didn't jinx myself lol I just got really excited about DCOM after reading these threads! I'm really hyped about the interview and excited to actually check out the town/campus. From the vibe I'm getting here it seems the students are happy...oir maybe the miserable ones are at home studying vs. posting jk lol....

wish me luck y'all................:hardy:

p.s. i love the little heart smilies =) :clap::banana::banana:😆:biglove::biglove::biglove::biglove::biglove::zip:

I uploaded a couple of pictures that my fam took during our White Coat Ceremony from around the school into our Facebook group. Check out our videos too!

sweet, thanks. how does the lecture room look like? also, how many kids are in ur class? do you know of any increase in size? a bunch of osteopathic schools have class sizes in the mid to upper 200s. considering how late my interview is, im not sure whether there are a lot of spots left. oh yeah, how many kids interview the same day you do? sorry about the questions!

Our lecture room is huge! I'll try to find a picture to give you an idea. Our class size was 160, I haven't heard if they increased it for next year. It will probably be the same. I'm pretty sure that there are spots left.. I interviewed last year at the end of January and plenty of people interviewed much later than me and still got in. About 12 people or so interview on the same day. Don't worry about the questions! I don't feel like paying attention in class today, so its giving me something to do, lol!

Ok.. I added a few more pics to our Facebook group.. not really great ones of the classroom.. mostly because of the people in the way, lol. Maybe it will at least give you somewhat of an idea. So if any of the other current students have anything that they want to add please do!

I think last year they started accepting too many kids early on and started wait-listing most people as they got later into the interviews so they didn't run out of spots before the interviewed everyone. So if you get waitlisted after a late interview date, you might be one of the first ones taken off the list (which they reviewed regularly).

I'm surprised the code for this one...:boom:

Isn't :mjbduringdralleylecture:

Piratesse has pretty much answered this, but I did want to mention that there will be no increase in class size for next year. It is scheduled to be 150 students, but they can have a few more, up to 160 I believe, like us. I don't think there is going to be any increase for a few years either from what I've heard. There is no need either, IMO. As for spots left, I don't know an exact number, but there are definitley spots left. You have to remember that DCOM started interviewing about a month behind most schools. I also interviewed last year in January, so I wouldn't worry about spots. I know of a person who was in the second to last interview group of the season, so end of April, who got in without having to go thru the waitlist, so don't fret. You will usually have 10-12 students interviewing with you.

If I do end up at DCOM, I'll be bringing 2 5 year old black labs with me. I'll be getting a house with a yard. If you're there too you can bring your pup to my house and leave him to play while we're at school. They love puppies.

I submitted in September and was interviewed 12/7 and have been on the waitlist since then. I'm dying to get off of it for an acceptance!!! DCOM is ABSOLUTELY where I want to be in August. My interview group was the record sized one of about 13 people. I'm continuing to retake classes in which I performed crappy from undergrad to try and improve my application --cell and molecular, immunology this semester..... Any words of advice about the waitlist or other advice?

squad, what are your stats? im not a stellar candidate and now am worried it'll be a waste of $600 going when i wont get in.
