Guess what guys I'm re-joining this thread............guess what that means!!!!!
Guess what guys I'm re-joining this thread............guess what that means!!!!!
Thanks for the response. I have been a heavy notebook user for the most of my life, however, I have no experience with a tablet...I always thought of it has a glorified PDA or something.
I'm glad to hear that onenote is working out perfectly for you. I look forward to using it.
Just a few more questions:
Regarding the notes----
-are the notes pre-typed with full details from professors......... and students just go along and add and edit the notes as the lecture goes on?
-or is it power point presentations with minimal information? and we are mostly responsible adding in the pertinent information?
-or is it no notes at all...just take whatever notes you can on a blank sheet of paper?
Regarding computer stuff ---
Also...did the tablet come with XP or Vista? And is everyones computer an "image" .....which is they are all the same? Basically, is it like a corporate notebook?..meaning that DCOM really owns it and we are just using it...and are we free to install whatever extra programs we would like?
Alright current students, who's gonna be at pizza night on Monday?!?!?! 😀
I am. 😉
Hope to see some of you there!
Our tablets are really just convertible laptops. All the same functions and basic programs as a regular computer with the ability to use the stylus to write notes directly onto the power point slides and OneNote. You can actually use the stylus to write on just about anything including word documents which is helpful if you want to just go through and highlight stuff with out printing it out onto paper. This year ours run on XP. We were told that Vista had not been perfected for tablets. I'm not sure which system they will use next year. This year, since we are the first class, our computers were provided to us for free. We all received identical Gateway notebooks, but we are able to add any programs to them that we want as long as they are licensed. I added stuff like Firefox, AIM, and iTunes with no problem. Next year's class might not necessarily have the same brand as we do. You guys also have to pay for them, meaning that they will add it on as a fee and budget into the financial aid, but deliver them to you at the beginning of orientation fully loaded with some of the specialized software that the school wants us to have (Primal Anatomy, Vpad, etc.).
As far as notes go, each professor has their own style. They all do power point presentations with some of them being more detailed than others. Some of the profs give out extra study sheets that go with their presentations that fill most of the blank spots. It really just depends.. sometimes I barely write notes onto my slides because the power point is very detailed, but other times I can barely keep up and have to go back to listen to the videotaped version later on.
The videotaped lectures are one of the most powerful learning tools that we have here. Some people use them more than others, but just the fact that we have them available is amazing.. also everything that was recorded this year will be available to next year's class as well, so you guys can see different versions! My favorite thing about the videos is that the they are recorded in sequence to the timing of the profs power point presentation.. that way if there is just a slide or two that you didn't get you can scroll through the slide menu and listen to the audio for just that specific part.. It saves loads of time not having to search through the whole audio file.
Sorry this is so much info, but I just want you guys to be able to hear all of the cool things we can do here at DCOM. They really give us every opportunity to learn more efficiently, and in med school that's really the name of the game. The tech stuff saves us time and money and without that we would not have any social life!😱 Quick example.. in one year of my masters program I spent about 350$ in paper and ink... In this semester of med school I haven't spent a dime!![]()

Congrats!!! I know you've been anxious about this for awhile. Let us know when the interview is so we can stop by and say![]()
Just got off the phone with LMU- They got me in for this Tuesday!!!!!
Amazing, shock and awe...............
So I drove up from knoxville once before and it took me about 1:15 to do it, but that was mid-day on a Saturday how long should I allow to get there by 8:45 am on Tuesday?
Congrats Laura!!
I remember seeing you in the back of the room at the OMAC on 12/15...
I was there with my wife and kids.
I live in Farragut and always allow at least 1.5 hours for travel.
Either 63 or 33.
Yeah, this deserves a dancing banana!!

Congratulations LauraDO! I'm really excited for you on your interview!! I also live off of Northshore...small world 😉.Yep I know who you are, I wish we had gotten a chance to chat. So did you drive up the morning of your interview? I'm just wondering if there is any 'rush hour' stuff I'll have to deal with
side note: I used to live in Farragut, love it over there, now I"m off or Northshore

Can't help you too much on the morning drive time though. I stayed in Middlesborough the night before because I wanted to be sure to not have to rush the next morning. I can tell you that I went through Halls on the way there at about 5:00 the day before and the traffic was awful! I went through La Follette on the way back and enjoyed that drive much more. I would be worried about going through Halls early in the morning because of so many people travelling into Knoxville for work.
Please do not be sorry, I am very thankful for the detailed post. If you don't mind, would you post a little bit more on the specialized software such as primal anatomy and Vpad that you mentioned. Thanks 👍
Well hoss, I added you too... my name is Maximal Dominus. So you can invite me whenever your on.
No one really answered me ... what gym is in Middlesboro?
Hopefully I'll be on tonight assuming the internet is working where we're staying (we're house-sitting for my wife's Aunt in Farragut...the house is AMAZING, except their internet sucks) and that XBOX Live will let me.Well hoss, I added you too... my name is Maximal Dominus. Traffic is a relative term. I'm not sure where you call home, but I know someone from Chicago or New York would think that our description of traffic is hilarious. It took me about 30 minutes longer than I had expected to get there on the day that I am referring to...but it was also raining and the people ahead of me must have never driven in water.I'm surprised to hear that there is any traffic down there..😱
The gym in Middlesboro is called Castleton's. Its actually just about a block from where Marthea and I live... about 8 minutes from the school. I would have joined except they don't have any morning hours. There are some people in my class that work out there and like it just fine. I don't remember the name of the one in Harrogate.

Don't know about the Middlesboro gym. I believe one of the students that I met on pizza night works out at the College gym, and he said he liked it. If it's any help, I worked out at a gym in a small town about the size of Middlesboro for a while and the membership fee was about $25/month. I moved to a larger gym in Knoxville called The Rush. The fees were about $60/month for me, my wife, and the ability for both of us to bring a friend for free.

I agree with you there. We cancelled our membership a while back. There is another club near the house called the 180. It is huge! I would like to check it out to see what it has to offer.I hate the RUSH, I can tell you stories about the rush, and the owner, honestly everytime I drive past that club I want to spit on it
No problem! Primal is a 3D anatomy learning tool. It has several different functions. A lot of people use the quiz mode, especially before tests. You also look at different parts going layer by layer, bone to ligaments, to nerves and vessels, to muscles, and so on adding them piece by piece. Its a great way to be able to tell how things fit together. There is also a lot of text you can go through and read. The tool I used the most takes muscle movements and shows which muscles are being used for something like abduction/adduction of the arm.. For me it was easier to learn by seeing the muscles moving in a group than by memorizing the groups straight out of the notes.
Vpad is a program that we use for in class quizzing. When its opened it puts a little window onto the desktop that looks something like the calculator function. They ask us questions during class on their power points and we key in what we think the answer is. When the alloted time is up it gives a bar graph of the percentage answered for each choice. It is also used as a way for us to get points toward our overall grade.
I think our histology prof said we may be adding some kind of histo slide program. He used it in class to show us some stuff during our first semester. You can look at the slide as a whole and then zoom in on any point in the tissue. I think it might be cool to have because instead of just seeing a picture of cells, we can back it off and see where those cells are in relation to the whole slide sample.
That's all we have installed right now, but I believe we are adding more as we get closer to some of our more advanced classes. I've also heard them talk about us getting PDA's for our clinical years. We don't really know a lot of the details yet.
To me, the biggest advantage of our system is that we are just about paperless. Everything is neatly organized and easy to find right on our laptops. That plus the videotaped lectures means that you can move from one thing to another quickly and efficiently without taking extra time to organize paperwork. It saves so much time not having to print notes out and then punching holes in them and tabbing them up in a notebook. In my masters, I spent soooo much time organizing or trying to reorder notes that had gotten out of order... same as in undergrad. Time I could have spent studying or having fun.
One other thing. You asked me about notes yesterday and I forgot to tell you that they test what's covered in class. They give us reading assignments, but they are just to help us better understand the material that we covered in class. You don't have to go into more detail than was covered by the profs. Some people read everything because it really helps their understanding of the material. I'm one of the people that didn't hardly open any of my books. I don't like to complicate stuff by seeing all of the details that we never would get tested on. I only looked something up if I didn't understand what they were talking about on one of the slides. Most of us had to wait for our loan money to come into be able to buy supplies and books. If you are a reader I would go ahead and get all of the books so you can read stuff from the very beginning of class. You can get them from the bookstore during orientation and they add it to your account and comes out of your difference check later. If you are like me, you can wait for the difference check first and then you have plenty of time to get them used online and save lots of $$$$ before you would probably need to look something up. 🙂
I had a great time at my interview...but every one is different. It is 2 interviewers at the same time in a single office and you.Hi Guys,
What's the interview like at DCOM? Is it formal/informal, panel etc... What types of questions do they ask? and what are good questions that intervieweeeeee can ask?
thanks so much

I don't know much about the owner...but I know he's a crappy tipper. I used to deliver pizzas in Kingston and I hated having to go to their house 🙂.
no morning hours that is crazy, what gym doesn't have morning hours. I am one of those early morning runners, I'm at the gym by 4:30am at the latest.
That can't be the only one in the area?
Can you tell me how much 180 costs 🙂.I actually have been going to 180 fitness since I have been home and love it. I know the owners and they are great people. It is a big facility with not many members (which is nice) lots of equipment and they are going to continue to improve. I have been a member of every club in KNoxville at one point or another so I can tell you all about them, 180 is the best so far, very laid back

I know, right?!?!?! I like to work out before class too. The pool at the school gym is open for masters swim at 6, and several of us do that on MWF. I don't know what's going on with the hours of the weight room at school.. they used to have early hours... hope they start them back when we go back to school. I'm not sure about the hours at the Harrogate gym.. I've been there before though. Dr. D'Eramo (OPP) teaches a yoga class there on Wednesday at 5 that is really good. Honestly, the best place for a running workout is in the park, but you are limited by the amount of light and sometimes the weather.
Again..thanks for the awsome response! primal anatomy sounds awesome. it is nice to see that there is a program that allows you to see structurse superficial to deep and vice versa...versus netters anatomy, which is just pictures..and it is hard to form a complete picture as a whole
Vpad sounds awesome tooo...a tool to help aid us on our learning process..and to learn from mistakes..which is key
I guess I am also only a note person as well...i also do not like to read more than necessary for the fear of oversaturation....it is nicer to read to get more info..but if that more info is going to confuse is..it is not worth it....it is nice to know that you don't have to go into any more detail than what is mentioned in class 🙂
I'd appreciate that. If you could, check on the price for one person as well as the price for me and my wife for a month-to-month membership. I'm not sure if my wife would work out there or not. She can work out at UT for free.Well I just paid for a month long guest pass so I"m not sure how much membership fee is, but i'll ask them tomorrow and let you know, it would be for you and the wife right?
If I go to this school (which let us all pray will be the case) Something is going to have to be done about this no morning hours situation
.....saga....to be continued.....
I just got a call that I'm accepted and off the waitlist! But I already paid my deposit for LECOM-bradenton. I liked DMU a lot better(other than I like the florida location better). I'm in such a dilemma now since I already paid $1500 to LECOM. Any ideas?
Speaking of Netters. You get a free Netters and a tshirt when you join SOMA! Its worth it cuz SOMA is only 60$ to join and a Netters is 75ish or something. One thing most of us learned: The required anatomy book looks really cool because it has pictures of real cadavers, but hardly anybody used it. Netters is much more functional to study from.. especially since we do prossections. If we were doing full dissections and didn't know what we were looking for or what the dissection should look like the book with real pictures probably would have been more use. So my advice is don't buy the required book, join SOMA and get a free Netters... If you already have an old one, use it just in the lab so it doesn't matter if it gets all greasy dirty and use the new one for regular study. Every group should get their hands on a dirty netters!🙂
Congratulations! But if you like DMU better maybe you should give up your seat at DCOM. 😉
Hah sorry that was me being dumb I somehow combined LMU and DCOM and got DMU. I really meant to say DCOM not DMU! I changed it now though. (actually DMU rejected me)

I am also glad to hear that it is prossection instead of dissection. Dissection is a waste of time IMO. Everything looks much different a few weeks later after so many students rummaging around with the cadaver and you wasted all your study time on actual dissection
I've seen alot of people do that, no worries, So what do you think you are going to do? From your other posts it seemed that you were pretty excited about LECOM-B
Well I was excited to be accepted. I was gonna make due with whatever I got of course. But now I have the option and I had such a better feeling about DCOM. It's a little bit of a dilemma because I did get excited about going to school but now when it comes down to it I feel like DCOM is a better choice for me.
