LMU-DCOM (DeBusk COM) Discussion thread Part 2 2007-2008

I do not exactly know how to drive on snow!!😱

drive very slow...brake far ahead in advance...I hope you have ABS..if not, then pump your brakes if you are ever in a skid. In addition, do not make any sudden turns...and keep a long distance b/w you and the car in front of you...hope it helps...

oh ya...if the car skids to the left...steer the wheel to the right..and vice versa

i think you should be fine though

Thanks for your advice!! Are the roads still bad from Knoxville? They made the news here in Austin yesterday!!!! I land at 3p and if I don't get to the pizza thing, you know I am still driving!!! This is going to be a real adventure for me and my rental car!!

We had over 500 wrecks reported in Knoxville yesterday!! I think mostly people were just being careless. The roads were fine today. I left the house at 7:00 this morning and had no problems. The temperature was 37 degrees when I left this morning compared to about 27 yesterday.

Congrats to everybody thats gotten an acceptance! I really excited for you guys!

I wanted to extend invitations to our new class members of 2012 to sign up for Osteobook. Its a new networking website set up by COSGP (Council of Osteopathic Student Government Presidents) thats a lot like Facebook and Myspace for Osteopathic Students, Interns, and Residents. Its a great way to network with your new classmates, our 2011 class, and other Osteopathic students and residents from other programs. The site just started on Saturday and there is already 1318 members, so jump on board! Its a lot of fun too. You can add music, videos, and have different background colors. Make sure and join the DCOM group and put that you are the class of 2012... and add me as a friend! 😀 I'll go ahead and put that my real name is Andi..most of y'all know that already. You can find me in the DCOM group.

make sure you're covered while driving another car than the one on your policy...if not, opt for their insurance. sounds like a ripoff, but $15/day could save you in the worst case scenario. another tip: if you're having trouble gripping the ground, shift down..it will inevitably slow your car down. 😉

:luck:!

Yeahh yesterday was a mess! Classes got delayed 2 hours, which has never happened in all the time I've been at UT. All of the sidewalks from my house in the Fort to campus were covered in ice...not to mention my front porch step that I almost busted on. I saw some lady interviewed on the news saying she tried calling 911 and it was busy! That's crazy.

Oh, and I forgot to mention... Congrats to everyone who got accepted!!

And Good Luck to the people in the Friday interviews!!

Yay for Texans!!!! I'm from Waco most recently.. raised in Nacogdoches! You should be fine getting to the pizza thing by 7. I don't think we are getting anything wintry tomorrow or Friday, but it is going to be in the 30's. Roads should be fine.

That's good to hear--I have been checking the weather online. I went and bought gloves yesterday as you know--we don't really need them here in Central Texas. If we get even a hint of ice everything here shuts down. I don't even own a coat just a wrap!! So if you see a popsicle at Oasis--you will know the Texan!!! Looking forward to it tomorrow!!

how late do you all usually stay at Oasis? I won't be getting in until 8 at the earliest...

It really just depends on the student group going. I've always stayed until at least 9:30, and last time Nascardoc and I stayed until 10:15! .. but this week is a test week so I can't guarantee how long everybody will be around. Most likely they will still be there.

ok cool, I might just skip my last class and go to a make up session so I can get there earlier 😉

Hey Dawn, thanks for coming out to the Oasis on Monday. It was SO helpful 👍. I absolutely fell in love with the school.... I will be so broken-hearted if I don't get accepted 🙁

Piratesse ----->>>>Naconowhere?:laugh:

no problem..your best bet is just to drive slow and 2 hands on the wheel (you may really need both) and keep your hazourds on so you don't anger the locals who are used to driving in that stuff

cassrae, darwin, i'll be there too on the 25th... driving from GA. You guys eating pizza the night before? I'll be there too! 🙂

I, for one, am down with pizza....see you there!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! 😛

:zip:eats

Wait, aren't you supposed to turn the wheel in the direction of the skid?

if the car skids (tires are locked), you turn opposite of the skid very fast to counteract..then the car will swerve towards that direction...then you have to turn the wheel the other way...keep in mind you have to do this in a rapid succession until the car straightens out in a very severe skid....and this goes back and forth like 5-10 times

Basically, rule 1 of driving in snow/ice....

Just because you have 4WD does NOT mean you can drive 50mph on ice...

4WD is useless when trying to slam on your brakes on black ice...like MANY people in Knoxville learned yesterday.

Rule 2:

SLOW DOWN, and don't tailgate.

It's that simple. 🙂

Congrats all on the acceptances!

I was recently driving to Univ of Iowa during a bad snow storm....I literally saw a vehicle off on the side or in the middle stuck every 50-100 yards for a few miles during a downhill portion...kind of frightening to see a whole semi on its side in the middle

Yea, I'm probably going to stop in to meet all you SDNers for part of the pizza night tomorrow...I would hang out a lot longer if it weren't for the massive amounts of studying I need to do tomorrow.

As far as weather, my widget says high of 29 tomorrow and snow expected...and I trust that thing with my life, so it must be true. You will all be fine, but I would suggest if you are driving up after dark that you take 75N instead of 63 to get here. 63 has a lot more hills and narrow roads.

I look forward to meeting you all and congrats to those who will be here next year!

So it seems like a ton of the 2012ers are staying in the student housing 🙁 I'm going to be missing out on all the fun. I just don't think I could get rid of my poor pets.

I snuck by having a chihuahua live with me for 1 year in undegraduate dorms.....never even barked! perfect pet...I don't think I'll try sneaking that again in med school...my sister will be taking good care of it anyhow

Awww. Don't give them up. DCOM student housing wouldn't be worth loosing your pets over. 😉 Don't worry, since we're already friends (AKA facebook, SDN etc.) you can come over to student housing and hang out with me! 😀

I was accepted too! I'm really excited and looking forward to meeting everyone in the fall. Wow, just so relieved. We get to start the rest of our lives now.

All of you guys are cracking me up with this snow stuff!!! Coming from Chicago, I'm not used to people freaking out over a dusting of snow. Granted, yesterday was crazy for a couple of hours, but all-in-all, it wasn't bad. But I guess when you're not used to it.....you get all 😱.

The best advice I can give for snow driving is to just be careful. But it won't be bad tomorrow, so don't freak out. The best thing to do is to drive relaxed, but attentive.

Yea, I'm probably going to stop in to meet all you SDNers for part of the pizza night tomorrow...I would hang out a lot longer if it weren't for the massive amounts of studying I need to do tomorrow.

As for the above quote, I don't know how you get to DCOM from I-75 without using either 63 or 33/25, and if I had to pick a way to drive if it was snowing, it would be 63...hands down. 33 is a lot more curvy and hilly than 63...so my recommendation would be, if it is snowing and you are nervous, take 63. It is a few more miles, but it is an easier drive. Granted, both ways are really dark at night, especially if you are from a big city, but drive with your brights on, but only if it is not snowing or foggy. It takes a little while to get used to some of the weather around here, but overall it is great. The locals freeze when it is in the 30's, but for me, in the middle of January...its soooo nice 😀.

Again, congrats to everyone on the acceptances and interviews. I may stop by Oasis for a quick bite and say to everyone, but it won't be a long visit 🙁.

Cool... around what time might you stop by, Nascar? Also, is anyone bringing their fiancee/spouse/boyfriend/girlfriend along with them to the oasis?

I will probably stop by between 7 & 7:30. I would bring my wife, but she's in chicago 🙁 But anyone who is interviewing, please feel free to bring your SO if they are coming down with you. If your parent(s) are coming, they are welcome to the dinner as well. We've had taht happen a couple of times (with parents coming) and it is really cool....so don't be shy.

Wait, aren't you supposed to turn the wheel in the direction of the skid?

sorry..you are right...im not sure what I was thinking

here is an excerpt from a website

"When most of us were first taught how to drive, we were told that if the car ever began to skid, to "steer into the skid". And when many of us got into a skid situation, we did little if anything - or steered the opposite way than we should have. Why? Because, "steering into a skid" is a difficult thing to figure out during the panic of controlling a skid. I've noticed that at least two-thirds of drivers will either steer the wrong way or do nothing at all. That's because "steering into the skid" is too confusing. In fact, I think it's the most confusing thing anyone is ever taught in their driving life.

So what do you do? How do you control a skidding vehicle. Well, if you read this column often, you know how I'm always going on about how your car follows your vision - where you focus your eyes is where the car will go. And, this works with a skidding vehicle as well.

So, if your car begins to skid, "look and steer where you want to go" will automatically make you "steer into the skid". And that's a lot easier, as long as you remember - no matter what - to look where you want to go. The important point is to focus your eyes where you want your vehicle to go, and then you will naturally steer in that direction."

Hey Dawn, thanks for coming out to the Oasis on Monday. It was SO helpful 👍. I absolutely fell in love with the school.... I will be so broken-hearted if I don't get accepted 🙁

It was great to meet you, I'm glad to hear you made it home with all the heavy snow and such! 🙄 lol

I will keep my fingers crossed for you and will hopefully be seeing you next year. Please PM me or post here and I'll be happy to help out anyway I can. That goes for all you others here on this thread too btw.

Yeah I wouldn't really give them up. Although my fiance wouldn't really mind if he didn't have to take care of pets any more. And I'll have to go hang out at student housing because that is were everyone will be!!!!

Yes, ND..you would obviously have to take 63 as well, but if you are coming from Knoxville you would have to take 75 to 63. You're thinking in terms of the roads that leave Harrogate and not the roads that leave Knoxville. So, yes, I think the 75/63 route is the best for bad weather or late at night.

ive been trying to find some more information regarding clinicals/rotations for 3rd and 4th year, but I haven't been able to find much. I see that they are mostly done in the knoxville area, right? Does DCOM have it's own teaching hospital there or ?? And when does the Inaugural class graduate? Just wondering about residency match stats, etc.

Thanks!

Nah, that just means you get to hang out with the cool 2011's that live outside of the apartments and have pets. 👍

I wanted to make sure someone answered your question because its a pretty important one. I saw someone post a message on the osteopathic board about how bad it was to set up your own rotations and such, so I was worried that there might be some fallout. The reason that not much is on the site yet is because somethings are still in the works since we are the first class going through (2011) and we don't get our rotation schedules until sometime next Novemberish toward the end of the semester. We have several hospitals in Knoxville and some into Chattanooga. So the way it works is that in 3rd year rotations we are assigned to a central site where we have rotations in our bigger hospitals. None of our rotations are more than an hours drive from our central site, and all are scheduled. We don't go hunting them down, just follow our schedule. 4th year we also have assigned rotations, but this time they are all at smaller community hospitals. This is so that we get more hands on experience.. something everybody wants and needs. 4th year we also have electives and selectives that we can choose to set up ourselves. This is so we can rotate through programs that we might be interested in attending during residency (we do set these up ourselves), or just try out some different specialties... We will even have pre-approved international rotations that we can choose to do.. I've never doubted that DCOM would not take care of us regarding our 3rd and 4th years. This school is on top of everything we have ever needed even though its new... I think they will go into a lot more detail during the interview day. Don't be afraid to ask questions! I wish I could give you some more solid info.. Maybe Nascar and MJB can chime in here.. We have a huge test Monday, so we might not be able to get right back with everybody for a few days.. but we'll try!
