LMU-DCOM (DeBusk COM) Discussion thread Part 2 2007-2008

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I had such a great time at DCOM!!! We had the most awesome group of interviewees--i hope we all get in--felt like we were a class already!! Even Bob mentioned how close we all were! Glad to see MikeMD made it home safely.

I want to thank the students who came out to the Oasis on Thurs night. You really helped us feel the excitement surrounding your school and answered all our questions. You really have a school you can be proud of!! I was so impressed with the technology at DCOM! Good Luck on the exam on Monday!!!

Oh and Nascardoc--it was 70 degrees today in Austin--on Jan 26th!!! Now you know why I am scared of snow!!

Can anyone tell me a good website where i can check out apartments off campus. I checked on the local newspaper website and didnt find anything. Also, i did some other searches but cant find any apartments that are listed online. Any input would be helpful. Thanks!

I was told about another realtor in the area that does rental's

www.ballrealty.com

They are in Tazewell but rent all kinds of places from duplexes to houses from Tazewell to Middlesboro. Check out their website under rentals and keep an eye on auctions as well. I know someone around here that bought a 6 year old 1200 Sqft house for 75,000 that only needed carpet and it's a nice house.

Hope this helps...I'm off to study!!!

bouspret, your little girl is beautiful!! She looks like such a doll.

i can't get this link to work

i'm planning on buying a house.... not sure where yet. not too far away. who wants to be a roommate?? 😀

i can't get this link to work

Sorry about that guys, I don't know whats wrong with their link it keeps adding (new) in place of (www) when I try to get to their web site. +pissed+

Here's their numbers. 1-800-349-9526
1-423-626-9393

Try calling them if their web site doesn't come back up. I was just on it a few days ago but it won't work for me right now. Sorry all 🙂

Tomorrow I will be on a plane headed for Tennessee. All I need to do is pack my things. I will be at the oasis and hope that someone from SDN will be there. Also, I have some huge news which I can't keep to myself anymore.

I'm going to be a dad!

That's right, a few days ago my wife took a home pregnancy test and the rest is history. It seems my housing needs have changed again. Of course, the news doesn't make this interview any less important (or I any less nervous). If you are religious like I am, pray for me.

Ahhhh congratulations!! How exciting! I will definitely be praying for both of you and your sweet baby. If either of you have any questions I would be glad to try to help. 😀:hardy:

I have my interview at DCOM in a few weeks (Feb 19th) and I'm really hoping I get accepted! I'm from CA, but I have heard soooo many great things about DCOM that I've decided it's my first choice out of the other 4 schools Im interviewing at.

👍 Its cool to have another person from CA there! I am also interviewing on 2/19! This is my very first interview!!! I got a late start on the whole process and one of my LORs isn't even in yet (still waiting, its the DO one). By the way, HippieChick, are you going to the Oasis pizza thing? It sounds like fun and good way to relax a bit (I'll be a nervous wreck probably) Any others out there interviewing with us that day?

I'm a long time reader here on SDN (>1year), but never really post much. I've read the ENTIRE LMU-DCOM thread, Part I and the sequel, Part II. It took me several days to get through!😛 This whole LMU-DCOM thing really has me excited though! It has quickly become one of my top choices. It reminds me a lot of my high school. It was new too, and in the middle of the mountains, but I decided to go there because everyone seemed so happy and friendly. It turned out to be one of the best experiences of my life!

Funny story for my interview call...😆

I got the call from Janette (nicest lady!) on my cell phone while driving on the freeway. I thought it was going to be some sales person because it was a private number. I decided to pick it up anyway...'Hi, this is Janette and I'm calling you from the DeBusk Osteopathic school to invite you for an interview."😱 I got so damn excited that I thought I would drive straight into the center-divider! :scared:

With one hand on the wheel and the other on my phone, watching my odometer go higher and higher from all the excitement (75...80...85!). I must have seemed awkward or lame over the phone, but I said something like "Obviously I'm very happy and excited about this, but I can't talk right now because I'm driving on the freeway". Mind you, I said all of this in a very calm voice.

She was so nice about it, asking me if she could call me back at a more convenient time! I asked her to call me back in 45 minutes. I hung up the phone and started screaming and slamming the wheel! My sister was sitting next to me, telling me I should have shown some of that excitement while she was on the phone! Way to make feel stupid sis! 😀

So I start thinking...oh no! I'm an idiot! This must have been the first time when somebody was actually rude enough to say, 'just call me back in 45 minutes, I can't talk now'. Needless to say, when she called back, I apologized 25 times for "earlier". She seemed to insist though that it was better for me not to get in an accident!

So thats my story and I'm sticking to it! WOOOOOOOOOHOOOOOOOOO!

Don't feel bad I did the same thing when Dr. Leo called to tell me I'd been accepted last year. I was in such shock and denial I think the most intelligent series of words I could string together was uh and ok. Maybe a "really" thrown in there a few times. I think it was Dr. Leo I talked to...😕

I actually called back a few hours later and apologized for my unusual behavior and they just laughed and said it was normal!

Anyway congrats on your interview let me know if you need anything!

Yay! Im so glad someone else on here will be interviewing on the 19th too! It's also going to be my first interview! I had to wait for my DO letter too, thats why I took so long completeing all my DO apps, Im worried since it seems so late to be interviewing but I guess it's not so bad, my Midwestern interview isn't until April (Im going to keep calling though to see if I can get in earlier)! Where about in CA are you coming from?

I will def go to the Oasis for pizza, are you bringing any family/friends with you? My BF is waiting to hea back from DCOM about an interview so hopefully he will get one and will be there too, but if not Im bringing my mom 🙂

I know, before reading SDN I really had no idea which school I really wanted to go to but the more I read about DCOM the more it sounds just right for me!

I have a couple of questions:

1) Does Dr. Stowers only call if you are accepted, but if you are waitlisted or rejected you only get a letter?

2) How does the waitlist work at DCOM? I think I remember hearing at Oasis that most (or all) waitlisted people ended up being accepted last year. If you don't end up getting accepted from the waitlist, do you have to reapply next year or do they guarantee you a spot?

The suspense is killing me.... :scared:

here's the info that mr. carney gave us at the end of our interview day:
1) accepted= phone call. waitlist=letter
2) last year 10 people were taken from the waitlist. not much movement...BUT there was someone that has already moved to accepted. someone who posts on here...can't think of who it is...look a few pages back. 🙄

hope this helps. keep your fingers crossed! :luck::luck::luck:

I was one of those that was moved off the waitlist....but since I came so close (I believe #1 or #2) they gave me an automatic acceptance for the class of 2012!...so at least there is some compassion and empathy on DCOM's part

Only 10? Wow, I guess I was being hopeful 🙄 Do many people that interview get rejected, or is a waitlist more common?

last year...they accepted way too many people in the beginning...so later on in the cycle...they ended up wait listing almost everyone..hopefully they changed it this time around

They said the adcom is meeting this Thursday...does that mean there is a chance we can here on Friday? Or probably Monday?

thanks

Ohhhh, that's right... I do remember hearing that. Thanks for your answers everyone!

What is the acceptance percentage after the interview? I know its a 20% acceptance at some schools, not too sure about DCOM. How many spots are still left?

I mailed in my deposit two weeks ago, and I haven't heard anything since then. What/when will I hear something else? I know that they're in the middle of accredidation work now, but if someone could shed some light on the rest of the process, I would appreciate it.

thanks!

He didn't call me (or anyone from my interview group as far as I can tell) until the Wednesday after the adcom met... so if you don't hear anything the Friday after don't panic, sometimes it takes a few days...

I asked Mr. Carney about this and he said the matriculation packet would be mailed out in February or March. Sit tight until then! 🙂

They are just waiting for me to be part of the class before they mail anything out

Yeah, he said that too, but I wasn't supposed to mention it. 😉 I think they're going to send your picture with all the matriculation packets!

I knew it! You know we argued about the picture thing, but it was either that or a putting it on a big bilboard in Knoxville

Heys guys...

We just finished the test from HELL (175 questions, 3 hours)....so I need to veg out and figured I could answer some of your questions.

Phone calls - Typically are made the Tuesday after the adcom meets. Dr. Stowers will only call those who are accepted, but he does not always call them. If you don't get a call, don't assume you have been waitlisted b/c it doesn't always work like that. I believe it was hoss who got no phone call and was still accepted. It is fairly common depending on the schedule, but you will not hear anything before Tuesday. Unless you get a phone call, wait to see what you letter says.

I wouldn't worry about the number of seats left just yet.

As for acceptance rate, it kinda hard to say b/c DCOM has already received almost 600 more applications this year than all of last year. Here's the stats from last year....

Applications = 2050
Interviewed = 529 (25.8% who applied)
Accepted = 295 (14.4% who applied & 55.8% who interviewed)
Class of 2011 = 160 (7.8% who applied & 30.2% who interviewed & 54.2% who were accepted)

Thats what I've got for you now......I'm going to play video games 😀

yea..those states do make your chances seem really limited if you are just aiming for DCOM and starting out at the aacomas level, but i'm sure it is not that bad if you're committed and show interest

really not encouraging Nascar, I'm assuming you are bitter after your test or you would not have posted something so cruel:meanie:

Someone at the interview (I think Dr. Stowers?) said they accept about 50% of those who are interviewed...so those numbers are about right... :luck:

This is a question for current students and recent interviewees: After visiting DCOM, did you just know that DCOM was the school for you?

thanks,

:corny:

P.S. good job on your grueling exam today DCOMers! phew...hearing about it was enough to make me go 😱
P.P.S. Hi Mike....just wanted to say hi to a fellow intervieweeeeee! 😀

I interviewed even before the building was built and I knew it was the school right away. i liked the overall atmosphere of the school and I also liked the fact that it is not just a medical school and there is much more going on within the university....of course the scenery just helps it even more

Yep, I feel in love with it within a 1/2 hour of being there. I first visited it when I went to the OMAC after that I just wanted to do whatever I had to to go back!

YES! Everyone was telling me that I'd get "that feeling" about a school and I was skeptical at first, but I really did feel at home at LMU. I could picture myself walking around the building, sitting in the study lounge, being in anatomy lab, etc. I only interviewed at one other school (DMU) and although I really liked the school, I could not picture myself there and didn't get "that feeling" like I did w/ LMU DCOM.

P.S. good job on your grueling exam today DCOMers! phew...hearing about it was enough to make me go 😱
P.P.S. Hi Mike....just wanted to say hi to a fellow intervieweeeeee! 😀

here's the info that mr. carney gave us at the end of our interview day:
1) accepted= phone call. waitlist=letter
2) last year 10 people were taken from the waitlist. not much movement...BUT there was someone that has already moved to accepted. someone who posts on here...can't think of who it is...look a few pages back. 🙄

hope this helps. keep your fingers crossed! :luck::luck::luck:

I got taken off the waitlist this year. Let me tell you that was one huge New Years surprise. From what I've heard it doesn't normally happen but who really knows what normally happens because this is only the second year of applicants. So I was waitlisted in Nov and then accepted Jan 3rd. So there is hope 👍

And to comment on the other discussion going on I really loved DCOM after my interview. I had another interview the next week and I was so judgemental because nothing was as good as what DCOM had (In my opinion) and I didn't get good vibes either. I just felt that DCOM was super friendly and laid back (the other school felt kind of uptight to me). I'm sure everyone has different opinions though. I kind of also doubt someone who didn't like DCOM is going to get on here and tell everyone it wasn't there favorite place. I would think most of the posts you read on this thread are somewhat one-sided because the people opposing DCOM would get flamed hardcore.

At our lunch with the Dean last week, I asked how the stats for the upcoming years class were looking and he said that we had over 2600 applications so far this year and that we had more applications than any other school for the first couple of months of the application season. Also, he said that the gpa and mcat scores for the upcoming year were probably going to be slightly higher because of the larger applicant pool. Hopefully this trend keeps up for the next couple of years....He also said that he had spoken with the dean from UT med school and that a couple of students that had been accepted to both UT and DCOM had chosen to come to DCOM and that they were supprised that we were having an influence on their applicant pool... Just some tid bits to chat about...
