LMU-DCOM (DeBusk COM) Discussion thread Part 2 2007-2008

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Does anyone know of any storage places in the area of Harrogate? I am living in washington dc right now, but am moving home (south dakota) this summer.

I believe there is one across the street from the school. If not, there are plenty around here and close by, so that won't be a problem.

I think that you have to add DCOM to your FAFSA. The good news is that you can have your results sent to multiple schools, so if a spot opens up they already have your info and can get your package together more quickly.

👍 Good advice. For all of you on the waitlist, add the schools you are waiting for to your FAFSA so you can be ready to go if you get pulled off.

Good Luck to those waiting! :luck:

For those worried about titers, shots, etc.:
I emailed Mr. Carney last week. I had not been vaccinated against Hep B, and I did not know how long it took to complete the vaccination (a total of 7 months). I was worried that I wouldn't be able to matriculate because I did not start the process until April 4th. Mr. Carney said that as long as the vaccination is complete by the fall (roughly October) I should be fine...so if you have not yet been Hep B vaccinated, make sure you get to the doctor very soon...but don't freak out either.

I haven't seen Sherruns post yet today - if I remember correctly she was supposed to hear something today - Hope it's good news!👍

What type of bike do you have?

I love living in east tn. We have a 40 min drive from where I work (and were I previously went to school, downtown Chattanooga) to where I live, which is a small town called Soddy-Daisy. Its actually two small towns that were merged, and all the old timers still claim to be from either Soddy, or from Daisy. Its really kind of funny...anyway, sorry for the tangent. About 25 min of the drive is on the highway, but the other 20 min is backroads and twisties. Its so great to get to ride like that every day during the summer months.

I ride a 2004 Yamaha R1. My avatar pic was taken at a trackday my wife and I attended back in February. We have some good shoots of her on the R1 as well as her CBR600F3.

I plan to do much riding while up in Harrrogate. A couple of longer rides out into VA will be very beautiful and relaxing.

I have lived in west Knoxville for the last thirty-six years and know many wonderful rides in North Carolina, Northern Georgia, and surrounding areas.

so i interviewed March 20th at DCOM...I thought the interview went really well but I just got put on the alternative list...does anyone know if you could find out what tier you are on the alternative list or should I write a letter of intent?

PS: Really bumed out :O(

Thank you so much 007!!!
Use some of Murph Dog's MoJo and your own 007 gadgetry and superpowers for me!

Anything, amphibious jetboat car airplanes, watches that uplink to satellite, shoe phones, umbrellas that shoot curare darts, Miss Moneypenny, anything!!!

I really think the laser eyes of Murph are in order at this late juncture.....

We are just out here still.....
alicat and myself

we both can't wait to hear!
😍😍😍I absolutely love this school!!!😍😍😍

Thanks so much for the post, the luck and the thoughts!

Alright, this is Murph dog trying to convince the adcoms to let sherruns and alicat in to DCOM.

The laser eyes!!

And if that doesn't work, maybe the cuteness will?

And if all else fails, we can call in my little brothers dog, Duke. He eats people through osmosis.

Seriously, I feel bad for Murph because I'm gonna hug and squeeze and kiss him sooo hard when I get out there! 😉

I don't know, it sort of looks like Murph is doing something dirty to that stuffed animal. I mean, sex sells, but maybe not for med school admissions

You forget who you are dealing with:
Marthea007
this is 007 status (hello!)
out of all leagues
I feel confident in these abilities, here, shall I say.
Nothing more need be done for the Alicat or the Sherruns at this moment.
We are set.
Murph has shone his light beams, and 007 has mandated.
So it shall be done.
That is all.
There is no unintended innuendo of any kind involving much-loved too-fluffy not-so-small laser-eyed animals frolicking with their intended flat green stuffed animals here.
It's all good.😀

I've emailed a couple of times to see where i fall on the alternate list. I get the same email back... so ill share it... i really hope i get into DCOM... its the only school I interviewed at.... and wel the only school I want to go to.....

Dear applicant,

Thank you for your recent inquiry. While I am not a liberty to discuss anything that was said by the admissions committee in its deliberations, I can provide some information about the level of competition for admission. Also, because of the increase in the number of applications that we are receiving this year the committee on admissions is being very conservative at this time in extending offers of admission.

We will continue to review applications for admission and interview prospective students through late April. At that time we will take a look at the numbers to see how many people are in the class and how many seats are still available. If such availability exists, then we will take another look at all of the applicants on the Alternate List and make an appropriate number of offers of admission to fill the available seats.

The alternate list is not ranked numerically, but is stratified into a few categories: local applicants from the southern Appalachian region are given first priority; applicants with significant experience in the medical field are given priority; applicants with family connections or other connections to the southern Appalachian region are given priority; applicants who are a good ‘fit’ with the mission of LMU-DCOM are given priority. That is, their life experiences and future plans coincide with the mission of service to the southern Appalachian region.

I have provided some information below about our inaugural class. Please note that the averages for the GPA and MCAT scores are just that – averages. We had some higher scores and some lower scores. The bulk of the GPAs were in the ‘B+’ to an ‘A’ range. The bulk of the composite MCAT scores were between 22 and 29.

At this point I cannot give any definitive answers about what GPAs and MCAT scores will be competitive for admission for the fall of 2008 because admissions is fluid and changes from year to year.

I would imagine that we will see an increase in the number of applications that we will receive this application cycle. This will have an impact on the level of competition for admission.

We will accept MCAT scores through the January administration of the test. We encourage all applicants to apply early, even if you will be taking the MCAT at a later date. Please indicate this on your AACOMAS application.

When reviewing applications for admission the Committee on Admissions looks at the entire application. Obviously, the GPA and MCAT carries the most weight in this process, followed by other factors such as experience in the health field, letters of recommendation, the applicant’s overall ‘fit’ with the mission of LMU-DCOM, changes in academic performance over time due to age and maturity, major accomplishments, etc.

No one factor, in and of itself, will or will not determine whether or not someone will be invited to campus for an interview or offered admission into the class. The totality of evidence presented by the applicant will be taken into consideration by the Committee on Admissions. Their decision will be based on a complete review of the application and compared to the entire applicant pool.

Thus, what may have been competitive for admission in previous years may no longer be competitive this year or in future years. This is totally dependent on the number of applications received in an application cycle.

Here is some information about our inaugural class of 2007:

Number of AACOMAS applications: 2050

Number of applicants scheduled for an on-campus interview: 558 (27.2% of the AACOMAS applicant pool)

Number of applicants interviewed: 529 (94.8% of interviews scheduled or 5.2% no-show rate)

Number of offers of admissions extended to applicants: 295 (14.4% of the AACOMAS applicant pool and 55.8% of those interviewed)

Number of those who were extended an offer of admission who also accepted the offer of admission/students in the class: 160 (54.2% of those who were offered admission)

Mean Cumulative GPA 3.29
Mean Non-Science GPA 3.40
Mean Science GPA 3.18

Mean MCAT Total 24.62

Females 59 (37%)
Males 101 (63%)

Minority (self-reported) 10 (6%)
Non-Minority 150 (94%)

By State:
TN 44 (28%)
KY 7 (4%)
VA 4 (3%)
WV 0 (0%)
NC 6 (4%)
SC 3 (2%)
GA 2 (1%)
AL 1 (1%)
All Others 93 (57%)

I was thinking of writing a letter of intent... should I put I'm willing to take O chem over before classes start if accepted??? any advice helps

Thank you Rock for your reply. It is appreciated! I have completed my FAFSA already and included both DCOM & my safety school. But I was more so wondering what happens to the financial aid loans that I signed with my safety school if I were to get accepted to DCOM? Do I just cancel them & start over with DCOM using my SARS again, or do the loans transfer over to DCOM since I would have already signed for them with the bank? Thanks!! Good luck to the rest of you guys on the alt. list!!

Oh man, sorry, I have no idea. Good question though. I guess you can't really call up DCOM and ask then that, now can you! Maybe you can anonymously call and ask them?

Thanks so much for all the wishes you guys. I received my letter today and have been put on the alternate list. I'm still HOPING! 😳😳
I'm not going to stress out about this, just let this take its natural course. If I'm supposed to be at this school, then it will happen.
Every bit of encouragement from all of you has been so appreciated. I STILL hope I get in. I'll just be hangin' out in the rafters for a coupla more months, til all the people with multiple acceptances drop down to one school. I may still have a shot! So not gonna pout!! My own darn fault for not applying earlier!
Take care and best wishes and luck to ALL!!!

Thanks so much Marthea007. Could you just go in there and have Murph zap my application so it glows? That would do it, yeah!!
Hugs and waiting now!!!
Thank you for the wonderful wishes. We shall see!!!
Still ain't skeered! Tryin' to stick out my jaw and be brave....
Could definitely use a Murph hug!😍

Thanks Texas...
I'm not too upset. It took so long for the decision I think my entire emotional state sort of glazed over. It's done and we'll just see!!!
I could sure use some craniosacral about now!!!
All this stress has definitely taken its toll. Let's hope the alternate list moves and moves and moves..........
I'd love to be there, that's all I know!:luck:

Sherruns, I'm sorry to hear that 🙁, but I totally agree with you that it's not over yet!! I'm also a big believer in the "meant to be" mentality and I think if you're meant to go to DCOM, you will. 😉

Hang in there. We should be seeing some waitlist movement soon! 😀

😍 Prions 😍

Hey! I just got accepted to Touro NV! I don't even believe it! I'M GONNA BE A DOCTOR!

I had just finished writing a long, long letter to Mr. Carney, including six of my 2 hour lectures on stuff, and as I was sending it, I saw that I had received an email from Roger Corbman. Three of us from two separate interview groups, probably around 21 people, only three of us got in. WOWEE!
So I'm going to pay and go and if I hear from LMU, I'm gonna have a gigantic decision to make!!!

Anyway, at the end of the day, it's a wonderful outcome!!!

Oh Gosh, CamelJockey786, it's just like no other feeling in the world. After all the stress and anxietizing (is that a word?) it is just such a welcome relief!
I've been on the outside looking in. It's good to be in finally.

I attribute my acceptance today to the laser eyes of Murph. He just uploaded his beam onto a satellite and triangulated a position near Henderson, NV. Who knew he had such mad skillz????????????
Thank you Murph Dog!!!!

I don't know, and can't comment to how exactly DCOM works their financial aid, but for my masters they didn't provide the first disbursement until a couple weeks after classes started. That way you can cancel your loans without really having to worry about paying back what you might have already spent. That being said, I would also imagine you have to sign a new master promissory note through DCOM.

Thank you again for your insight guys!! I'm sure they must have a system on how handle the situation. I hope to have this problem in the future because that means I was accepted!! Congrats SHERUNS on your acceptance!

How are you guys hangin' in there, DanaRenee? I'm trying not to let the wait drive me crazy.:scared: I probably think about it 1000 times a day, and we've only been waiting for two weeks. I really feel for those who have had to wait for longer. Hopefully we'll both get good news soon. You guys stay strong!

Thanks Syncope82...my fault for entering the game so late. DCOM is awesome and I would have loved to have been the Ice Cream Queen. Well, you know, it could still happen. I just need to wait another few weeks. I've expressed to Paul Carney that DCOM is my first choice, but I think the ADCOM is boggled this year with so many qualified applicants. They can't go and admit everyone. I totally understand. I'm willing to wait and put my deposit down elsewhere. I just wanna be in class in August! Main Goal!!!

Thanks for the thoughts and best wishes to you too!
You're gonna go to school in an absolutely rockin' place. You completely deserve to be there!😍

To everyone on the waitlist: Believe in yourself. Have faith in your abilities. You know you deserve this. You know how far you have come. Have no fear. Let the process play out.

Sherruns....sorry to see you were waitlisted, but congrats at getting into Touro-NV!!! Like I tell everyone, if DCOM is your first choice, let them know and stay updated. For everyone else still on the waitlist, I hope all goes well.

For those of you with finan. aid questions, the best thing to do is call/email Pat Peace. She is so awesome at her job and is extremely knowledgeable. Definitely use her for your questions....don't guess.

I just got back from Washington DC for DO Day on the Hill where we got to mingle with congressmen/women and their aides to lobby about healthcare, etc. It was a great experience and we had a blast in DC. I highly recommend for people to go next year.
