LMU-DCOM Discussion Thread 2011-2012

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
alternate list. and my only one.
guess im not going to med school next year.

It's not a down right rejection, there's still hope. Plus, you have a good 4 months or more of the application cycle that you might hear from other schools.

Hang in there! Don't pester admissions, by any means, but do send a couple of valuable updates to your file over the next few months so they'll know you're very interested in the school. In past years, if SDN is any indication, when the alternate list starts moving it moves quick!

Yo Giggity you're welcome bro. It was good to meet you.

Thanks bro! Haha, you were right, this site is kinda addicting (I now check email, fb and this, in that order) lol...Plus I also realized I can kinda guess who's who among those that interviewed w/ us...

Don't sweat it, u're still in the running! I have a friend that got accepted into KYCOM last year 2 days before classes started...Not kidding! Plus, you know there will be movement around May 15th for all those that decide to go the MD route...Hang in there!

Don't give up yet! Send a letter of intent, and update them on what you have been doing to strengthen your app. They like to know that you are interested in the school, and sending in things about continued progress shows you are working as hard as you can to get into school. Also, Janette says they usually put ~100 people on the waitlist and take about 25-35 people, so you still have like a 30% chance which is pretty good. Just keep in touch with the admissions committee (obviously don't call like every day, cause that could get annoying, but letting them know you are still very very interested is a good idea). Good

To the person asking about the powerpoints...every class has a downloadable powerpoint associated with it. There is a program installed on the computer called onenote, and you can download the powerpoints to it, and you can put them in all sorts of different folders so you can organize your stuff however you want. You can also write all over the powerpoints if you have them in onenote (the computer literally turns into a tablet and has a stylus). There are all sorts of colors you can write with and highlight too. The computer is a lot easier to study from if your notes are in your own handwriting for sure. But, if you really don't like using the computer you definitely don't have to, and I would recommend buying a printer only if you are going to be printing out lots and lots of stuff. I have printed pretty regularly at school, and I haven't run out of my free pages (but I do have a printer and sometimes print stuff at home too). If you get one, I would get one that prints color, because that is the one thing you can't print at school (they are all blank and white).

I received an e-mail today informing me that my deposit has been received! Woo woo!

A few hours ago I got a call from the dean. I am accepted into medical school. I am going to be a doctor. Woohoo. I interviewed this past tuesday.

I JUST GOT MY CALL TOO! congrats to you🙂

I officially declined my acceptance offer so hopefully that opens up a space for a future interviewee or someone on the waitlist. Ugh what a tough decision. I really really liked DCOM but I put down a deposit at another school which is closer to my family.

Good Luck to everyone!

does anyone have a picture of the anatomy lab mural??

Well I paid my deposit and I am almost positive I will be matriculating here. Ive turned down like four other interview invites (in my humble opinion dcom had way more to offer), and I got waitlisted after my interview at the only other school I was really considering (university of wisconsin, md, although I was probably still gonna go with dcom even if I was accepted). Its jusy starting to settle in (tennessee and all), probably see you guys in a few months!

The more I think about it the more excited I get.

Also, coptoem I am really looking forward to meeting you. You seem to offer solid advice on a consistent basis. Also does ur screen name stand for Cop to Emergency Medicine?

Thanks - I try to help out where help is due. That is what my screen name means. Quite the change of careers, huh?

What is the most commonly used route for interviewees from the west coast to get to LMU? My plan is to take a flight from AZ to Knoxville, TN and rent a car to drive from Knoxville airport to Harrogate. Is there a rental car at the Knoxville airport? Also, how long is the drive from Knoxville to Harrogate?

Yeah there are a few rental places right at the Knoxville airport (TYS). DCOM gets a discount through one of them although I forgot which. Very easy pickup/dropoff right at the airport. The drive is usually about an hour or so.

Same here! I hope to see you on Jan. 9th. But, I will ultimately decide whether I will interview there or not before the Christmas since I am waiting for the decisions from the two schools I interviewed early this month. However, I want to interview at LMU!

Thanks for the info, fiznat!

Officially declined my seat.

Hopefully one of you will get it.

I'll have to miss pizza night unfortunately-I've got a final tonight.

I got ACCEPTED too!!!!!!!!!!!!!! See you soon LMU!!!!!

Congratulations futuredoc911!👍 It is a great place and hope to be joining you all soon.
Has anyone who interview 12/06/11 been called by the dean?😉

I interviewed on 12/06 and I got a call on 12/08 at 10:20 P.M. eastern time from the dean. Did you get a call from the dean yet?

i wishhhhhhhhhhhhh i hope i hope i get it :'(

Just declined my offer of admission via email. Hopefully, someone on SDN who is waitlisted will get the spot! Good luck, everyone! DCOM is an amazing school, but I have two offers in my state that I can't refuse. 🙂

From what I'm hearing, Jan 9th is an excellent time to interview due to the spots opening up (deposit due on Dec 15th), so I wish you guys the best of luck next month! And congrats to everyone else that got in, I look forward to seeing you all in fall! 🙂

what kind of GPA are they looking for? I got denied by another school because my current science GPA (3.17) did not make the cut off (should be over 3.3 after this semester). I made a 26 on my MCAT. I just hope that they don't have a cut-off line for GPA...

Hey I am interviewing tomorrow 12/14 as well, are you going to Pizza night tonight?

No way! thats pretty kool.

are the class lectures powerpoint...??

would you guys recommend getting a printer?...i cannoy study off a computer...im a paper kinda guy

I printed off everything in college as well, medical school this practice is an epic waste of time IMO. You can do so much more by having them printed to OneNote, and its SO much easier. I saw people printing out all the lectures at the beginning of the semster and laughed out how rediculus it was. I mean papers galour and it looked like a pain. I noticed the number of people doing this decline as the semster went on.

I can't imagine printing out all of the lectures. I mean youd have papers coming up to your ears, we had tests that included 50 or so lectures that averaged 40-60 slides a pop. I hated the OneNote program at the start but I absolutely love it now. Has a bunch of awesome features (Search fucntion in your notes is awesome), I am more organized than I have ever been with it, and it has made a huge difference with me. The time alone saved by not having to print out the lectures is worth using OneNote.

BZ1024, I had a 3.2 cGPA and a 3.17sGPA and a 28R MCAT and got in last year.

I hope they won't deny me before I can submit my fall grades which I think will help out with my GPA a lot!

There are no known cutoffs that I have ever heard. They look at the whole applicant!

Interview on the 24th of January! Anyone else going to be there?

COPtoEM - how old are you? (if you don't mind me asking)

I am a 30 year old non-trad. and was the oldest interviewee in my group. Just looking for some fellow non-trad.'s who might be classmates with me.

I know a lot of people have responded to this comment already, but here are my two cents.
Yes, I would recommend at least a little cheapo printer for home....you get 500 pages per semester to print at school (b&w) and people definitely do run out. I will say, the one times I've run out are when I did, in fact, try to print out every lecture in powerpoint form. I even printed 4-6 slides a page double sided (saves you one of your 500 pages!) and I still ran out...so yeah. I wouldn't recommend it 🙂 If you must have paper stuff, which I understand totally, I would recommend typing out or writing out a set of your own notes. Most people I know condense each lecture down to 1-2 pages written or typed and keep that as a copy of notes.

As stated before, the computers truly are very study friendly....you can write all over the notes, highlight with your stylus etc. I think you'll be ok 🙂

That's what they told us as well about their reasoning for closed file interviews. It really bothered me though because by being closed file, the interviewers do not have the full picture of you, your accomplishments, and your abilities. In my interview at DCOM, my interviewer told me that the majority of their decision was based off of the interview. Well, if you are an interviewer and you have no other information to go off of, you could come up with all sorts of unfounded conclusions in the minimal 20-30 minutes you have to ask questions. I think this happened to me, as I was waitlisted here.

I had much better experiences at schools that were open file. We were able to talk about my essays, my grades, my EC's, etc. Whereas at DCOM, I struggled to fit all of what I saw as relevant in such a narrow timeframe and I left thinking they knew nothing about me. Or worse, they had a distorted idea of me as a person.

I'm sorry you had a bad experience 🙁 To be honest, most people view the closed filed interview as a blessing (I certainly did!) but it's true that a closed file interview presents a whole new challenge than others do. You have to manage to share all the great things about yourself in your file based on the questions they give you. I think both interview types have their pros and cons, but I have to say that I think it serves our student base VERY well. There is a lot to be said about the interview process and the faculty/staff that do the interviews truly are just looking for the personalities that are going to work best. Let's be real- once you have the interview, you've passed the numbers game for the most part. They want to see what you're all about as a human being more than anything at that point.

I've heard it becomes easy to get used to over time - the tablet makes it a little more intuitive. Either way if you do get a printer you will definitely want to invest in a good laser jet - black and white ones are actually pretty affordable.
I'd recommend having some color capability as well- there are many things that you MUST have color for if you're going to print them and actually use them to study.

alternate list. and my only one.
guess im not going to med school next year.
Chin up, kid! I applied twice and many of my classmates did the same...plus, as others have said, it's still early! A large number of people in my class got accepted in January, February and March, some off the waitlist! Keep them posted on what you're up to to enhance your application (yes, you have to be doing something constantly!!) and the day the next class starts, start following up with admissions to see where your weaknesses are. I swear it works 🙂

There is...and I know someone commented on the drive being an hour or so. I actually live in Knox this year and even from where I live, I count on an hour and fifteen minutes and I go ahead and leave an hour and a half to get to class on time for sure...and I live on the northernmost part of the city. From the airport, count on a 90 minute drive just to be safe, if you're going to tight on time at all that is.

That GPA does not rule you out of getting into DCOM for sure. Your MCAT is still above the average as well, so really it all just comes down to other aspects of your app....LORs, personal statement, activities, etc.

I personally don't use OneNote, but lots of my classmates love it. They do a tech session at the beginning of the year as well to help you get oriented, but the best thing to do is sit down with people who have used it and get help. It's definitely a way to keep everything organized and right at your fingertips.

Good luck to all those waiting to hear back on interviews/decisions. Congrats to all the new members of 2016!!! I won't be there when you guys are campus as I'll be starting rotations, but you're still always welcome to send me questions. Also, I've started regularly posting in my blog as it is now linked to LMU's website, so be sure to follow it if you want to see what it's like to be a DCOM student. In addition to my blog, there's another student linked to mine (justin) and he will be in the class of 2016 and is also a member of the DO/MBA program.

I got it with VERY similar stats for next fall.

OH, and my deposit went through today 😀
See you all in the fall!
