LMU-DCOM Discussion Thread 2011-2012

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Do you know when the admission committee will be meeting to make their decision...?

They said the committee will meet this Thursday, and the letters go out on Monday.

Thanks! Did they give you any new statistics regarding how full the class is or how many people got pulled off the waitlist?

They said on Monday that the class was maybe half full. I'm not sure, but I thought they said that they wouldn't start pulling from the waitlist until the end of interviews.

I don't know if they told all you interviewees on Monday, but DCOM just got approved to increase next year's class size by ~65 students on account of the new building, increasing residency placements in the area, and increasing faculty size. That should open up a few more spots for people on the waitlist/late interviewers 🙂

What does it mean when they put your file on hold? A nice way to say no? I am re-taking my MCAT so maybe they're waiting on that.... but still, my current MCAT score was just a tad bit below the average while my GPA was above the average. I want to go to LMU really badly!!!!

Pre-interview or post-interview hold? If pre, they're likely waiting to see the results of your MCAT retake.

Yeah I guess that makes sense. Pre-interview hold right now. MCAT is at the end of the month. What do you think of sending in a letter of intent to let LMU know that I really want to go there? Or should I just wait and send one after my MCAT?

wait so...the increased class size is for this years class? the one starting august 2012?
that means if i was placed on waitlist in november....i shud have a higher chance of acceptance now?
that gives me hope :s

i heard 75 students

to 225

Yeah this is correct. The increase is about 50%, to a total of 225 students.

Obviously they are going to have to ramp up the number of students they accept to accommodate the (just recently) increased class size. Whether they take those people from the wait list or simply interview more is anyone's guess. Being that this has happened later in the application cycle though probably means that everyone has a better chance of getting in this time around.

Probably won't do you any good to send one now - I don't see them pulling you from pre-interview hold if they're holding you due to MCAT performance. Was your first score very low? Generally pre-interview hold with a new MCAT scheduled just means that they want to see how you do before taking any action.

With that said, the class size did just bump up about 75 spots, so a letter of intent certainly won't hurt you..

My MCAT was in the low 20's. I was complete by the end of October so yeah, I guess you are right they are waiting for my January MCAT. So with this new addition of seats, they currently haven't filled 50% of the class yet????

If your GPA is solid go ahead and send the letter. It can't hurt you. You can always send another one after your retake if you don't see any movement after you release your score.

They're typically half full by Christmas break so you can figure they had probably accepted roughly 80 people by then. However, they just added the additional 75 seats, so the class is now only 1/3 full.

I'm not too sure about how I feel regarding this increase in class size. I mean, it's great that more potential students can be accommodated, but I sure hope that DCOM knows how to properly prepare for the surge. If they can, then I welcome this. One things that I appreciated about this school was the smaller, home-y feel to it. I guess we shall see.

If I had a choice, I would definitely prefer the class to stay the size it is. That being said, I don't think that it's going to ruin to feel here. We have many smaller group activities that help you to get connected and have one on one time with faculty. My hope (and expectation) is that they will be hiring more faculty in the next year. The transition might be rough at first, as new faculty adjust to how we do things here, but it should be fine. They hired a bit this year to replace some professors we lost and I have to say, we got EXCELLENT clinicians and PhDs this year. Right now, at least, we have 10 people to a small group- these are the groups that you learn all your physical exam skills in, the groups you work with on group exam, your anatomy lab group (which was actualy 5 to a body, and with the increasing lab, will be less, I hear), etc. Point being, they do a good job of not letting you getting lost here, for the most part.

Also, the more I think about, the more I think the jump won't feel THAT different to students, at least once the school wears the kinks out in day to day business. Honestly, when you only have 150 in your class, and 300ish total on campus at any given point, everyone knows FAR too much about each other anyway. Maybe an extra 130 people total between the first two classes will minimize this some 😉

I was wait-listed here and I think they should start accepting people from the wait-list as they have more space now🙂

I mean they must have liked us a little at least to put us on a wait-list?

Also, I was looking at AOA residency website and I don't know why they said they increased the residency seats near the school as I only found one residency program affiliated with LMU in Knoxville, TN and then like 1 more program in orthopedic surgery. So maybe the website hasn't updated the new programs but I really hope more residency seats were created as many schools seem to be expanding!

Also, would an update letter be helpful?

An update letter would definitely be helpful 🙂. Also, I think the school is working with hospitals in the area to create new residencies, but they aren't set in stone just yet. If the increase in class size is for the class of 2016, then theoretically they would have until then to work out the details. I know our core site in Cookeville is trying to set up a residency after having our students rotate through there in the past couple years.

So I'm trying to type up a letter of intent, but I'm having a hard time finding what makes LMUDCOM unique or different from the other schools- so any of ya have any suggestions or facts that I'm overlooking? Thanks!

...math was never my strong suit haha.😳

You were actually right anyway - our class size was supposed to be 150 according to everything I'd seen up to this point. They were 160 for all the other classes though - not sure why they intended to drop it by 10.

Got the interview invite for 1/31. Seriously so excited!

What program in Knoxville did you find that is affiliated with LMU? I know that the program in Wellmont, VA is linked with us now for ortho, but I wasn't aware of another one. Also, programs are opening up here and there in the general Appalachain region, which is where a lot of our students end up wanting to practice, due to family being close to that. I am just one of those that blindly accepts that it will all work out- of course we need to voice our opinions as schools keep opening, but it's happening slowly but surely. I read of a new psych program in plans for 2012 at one of the residencies I've been researching and with every few programs I examine, I find the same thing.

Really?! That's fantastic! We must just be that awesome that they want to draw us in that way 🙂 Do you happen to have any idea what program they were looking to open?

Hmm, ok, I'm going to approach this as nicely as possible lol. First, these questions are kind of a crapshoot, let's be honest. I mean for the one thing you can say about DCOM that you love, at least 5 other schools out there probably offer that very thing. So in reality, that question is really hard to answer with a fully justified answer. On the other hand, without this coming across poorly, if you can't muster up a genuine letter of intent, you might re-examine your interest in the program. Asking other people what to write in these letters, with regard to your passion about the program, is not a good sign exactly. I don't mean to be negative, but I just think something like this should really come from YOU. I assure you, the adcom can see through it otherwise. 🙂 Maybe spend some time researching and dig deep to figure out what you like about the school. Read my blog if you need inspiration 🙂

DCOM just recieved approval to increase the class size to 225 for the class of 2016

The only reason I know is my dad works there, and is on the committee that is trying to start it...but I have no idea how far along in the process they are. I think it might just be an FP program for now, but I think once one is set up it will be easier to get other types of programs to pop up there. All I know is that Cookeville is really loving our students. My dad is a radiologist and literally thought DOs weren't doctors until he started being a preceptor for LMU. I think the term he used when he told me I had to apply here was, "these students are brilliant".

No offense taken- that did help. Thank you for your honesty; however, where's your blog? I do want to take a glimpse at it.

Anyone else get an accepted letter today? I got mine this morning!

I JUST got off the phone a while ago with someone from admissions and I got invited for an interview. Considering my GPA/MCAT, to say I'm surprised would be an understatement but I am SO RIDICULOUSLY excited / happy that I made it this far that I'm literally shaking.

That being said, is LMU-DCOM one of those schools where if they give you an interview they really do like you? Or are they giving interviews pretty liberally?

Thanks and congrats on all the acceptances! 🙂

Congrats! When do you interview?

Well I was at work when I answered the phone and was completely flustered so I told them I'd call them back tomorrow morning and confirm the date but Feb 13 probably.
I'm so nervous/scared!

Congratulations! When were you complete? I'm just trying to figure out when I should be hearing back from them.. (if I do that is). Thanks!

Traditionally roughly 50% of interviewees seem to be accepted. Most of us believe that DCOM grants interviews to students that they feel are completely capable of succeeding based on numbers alone. That is to say they have reviewed your file and feel like you're capable of completing medical school academically.

The interview, on the other hand, seems to be more about determining who you are as a person socially. Will you fit in with the school? Are you nice or do you come off as a stand-offish person? Can you carry on a conversation with complete strangers? Etc.

To add to that, you are going to be interviewing at a time when there are 75 additional seats available. I would believe this increases everyone's chances of acceptance for the rest of the cycle.

Tl;dr version: No liberal interviews, you've been chosen because they feel you're qualified and want to learn more about you as a person.

This made me chuckle! 😀 The hospital is in Kingsport, TN (Holston Valley Medical Center) and it's part of the Wellmont Health System!
Bahaha....just check the time I posted...it's reaching my peak, I'm still awake but I'm about to get very, veeeeery sleeeeeeeeepy 😴 Haha, yes, it's Wellmont Health System we're affiliated with...I think what I was thinking of is the Family med program we have in the Norton area. I know for sure this exists because one of the 2011 grads was back at Hospital Day (where the rotation sites and many residency sites from all over the country come and chat with students) and we talked about his experiences there. That's truly what thought process was going through my brain I swear!! 😀

Dude. Totally thought you were another first year. Now I know the real truth. Either that or another first year lives your life identically...
Lol but seriously, I'm sure you knew who I was (Uhh, picture, not pretentiousness, caused me to say that), so I feel kind of silly 🙂 But hey, I maaaay or may not want to rotate with your dad eventually, so you just keep me on your good list alright? Assuming I'm on that list...

No offense taken- that did help. Thank you for your honesty; however, where's your blog? I do want to take a glimpse at it.
I see you got directed to the blog already 🙂 I'm glad my words came across alright. I just always like to see the people coming here have that undying enthusiasm that can be, well, somewhat overbearing at times. It creates an energy here that I really love. So dig deep and see what you think...if you have other options, maybe LMU isn't the best fit. I happen to think we're the best in the nation, but, well...I guess we'll have to graduate a few more classes before people really start believing it as much as I do, but you see what I'm getting at with this infectious enthusiasm right?? 🙂

It's test day tomorrow so in case she isn't able to check this: http://lmudcomheather.wordpress.com/

That's her blog!
Test day indeed. Brain=fried. So fried that I keep typing "friend" for "fried" and may actually be asleep before midnight! I do hope to be updating as much as possible on that thing...by rules of the university, I need to post once a week minimally. If there's anything anyone would like to hear about, please let me know somehow!! The more I run dry on med school related material, the more I ramble on about life and other topics that, well...I can get a little animated in with my writing. I'm supposed to keep it somewhat focused 😉

I felt the same way when LMU offered me an invite (terribly unworthy numbers wise), but have faith....an interview is a GOOD SIGN. With class increase, you have a great shot if your LORs are solid and your personal statement and all that is in line. Now just rock out the interview! Don't be like me and have to interview twice because you were so freaking nervous the first time around. Walk in confident- you have every right to be if they offered you the shot at a seat!

It's okay - I see the time now! Hahaha. Yup, there's a Family Medicine residency in Norton at Mountain View Regional Hospital. They also do some rounds, I believe, at Lonesome Pine Hospital in Big Stone Gap (~15 minutes away) and do their other training at Holston Valley Med Center in Kingsport. Dr. Nida is in charge of that program along with Jo Anne Harding, the coordinator, so if you're interested he's the man to know!

Congratulations! When were you complete? I'm just trying to figure out when I should be hearing back from them.. (if I do that is). Thanks!

I was complete 8/29, I emailed admissions with some updates regarding my interest (I got into their post bacc prog so I also mentioned that) along with some other stuff last week and I got a phone call today. Gluck to you!

Well best fortune! I really wish you the best :luck:

Thank you! have you interviewed yet?

Thanks! i've been slightly panicked because from what I've read my sci gpa is RIDICULOUSLY low so I'm sitting here scratching my head over what made them give me a shot (not that I'm complaining). I'm trying not to get my hopes high but it's kind of hard because I never even thought I was gonna make it this far because of my grades...
okay so its not a formality type of interview where you're in as long as you're not a murderer but at least I have a 50/50 shot --more or less.

AHHH I really hope i can start school with you guys in the Fall!

No I interview the 31st! Really excited. Like you, I'm not getting my hopes up, but it would be Amazing if it did happen.

Received the acceptance letter yesterday! Crazy stoked about the future and to all those still waiting.....keep your head up and stick with it, good things will happen. I am the underdog's underdog and I made it so, stay positive. LMU-DCOM Class of 2016!

BadelRN, did you interview on the 10th? I had a guy in my group who is from Greenville, SC, who went with his wife to the interview. I am from birmingham! Congratz!

if there's someone that wants to split the cost to rent a car from the airport or share a hotel room (female, preferably) I'm down to do that since I'd rather save money where I can and it'd be nice to not be completely alone (and freaking out). Just PM me and we can work out the details. 🙂

You'll prob fly into Tyson-McGee in Knoxville (airport code TYS). It's out on the west side of the city and it takes about 1hr30 min to get to Harrogate from there with normal traffic. I *believe* it's 25 to rent a car here too, but I am honestly not sure so you'd have to contact the place at the airport and see what they say. If you don't find someone coming on the same day, contact me....I might be able to set you up with something. We do have an exam that Monday so it's going to be tricky, but we'll see.

Any Of the accepted get a package yet???

Also is there a bus or anything from knoxville to harrogate ir even close by??

I was accepted back in September, and I haven't received the matriculation packet yet. I am from Harrogate, and unfortunately there isn't much public transportation in the area at all. I have seen a taxi or two and public transit for the senior citizens--but that's it.

Like Heather, I was also asked by LMU to write a blog representing the DO/MBA program and the Class of 2016. I am just getting my feet wet now, but I would love to have some input and direction. So, if anyone has any suggests, be sure and send them my way! I do have photos documenting the progress of the new science building.
