Hi everyone!

I am a current junior and getting ready to apply in the 2018 cycle for dental schools. I have already taken the DAT and am currently working on my personal statement and getting my LORs situated.

I am getting a committee letter from my school, but I am also working to try and obtain an additional letter from a dentist. The problem is that I have finished most of my shadowing hours my sophomore year. I shadowed with a general dentist during my freshman year, who I shadowed with for the bulk of my shadowing hours. He already agreed to write me a LOR when I asked at the end of freshman year, but I am not sure if I should go ahead with this letter because I have not stayed in contact with him since then. I am worried the letter would not be as personal since I didn't shadow with him recently. Should I go ahead and have him write me one or should I look to shadowing another dentist for about a month and have him/her write me one? The only thing about the latter option is that it is quite difficult to find someone to shadow with only two months remaining before the application opens?

Thank you!

You should ask him. I don't recommend that you shadow another dentist for a month and ask them for LOR. If you have the time you can go back to the dentist you shadowed your freshman year and ask him if you could shadow for about a month and ask him for LOR.

Thank you for your reply!

The only thing is that he is a general dentist from back home, and I am at college OOS. I will be back home from school in the middle of May. Would it still be possible to maybe shadow him for a few days and have him write me one before June? (The deadline for additional LOR's attached to my committee letter is June 1st.) Or should I call him soon and let him know of the LOR deadline whether I do end up shadowing him for a couple days?
