LSU 2024-2025 (c/o 2029 hopefuls)

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I really like this conversation on the comparison between graduate programs because it can be helpful to others on the forum! 🙂 When deciding on where to go for graduate school, it's super important to decide which one is the best fit and should reflect your true interests. For my veterinary program from Mizzou, I chose veterinary public health as I want to practice in government or on the local level. All my classes are upper division science, with the exception of one internship requirement. Cowsrcool also had to take upper division science courses as well, whereas, abrew13's masters was research heavy. I love this dialogue because it really highlights the vast nature of what you can do to not only improve yourself as a future applicant, but also what can enrich your current interests ☺️ I am so proud of all the hard work we have all done! You all are so awesome!

I just wish schools gave it more weight bc I felt like I sold my soul to get that mf degree 🤣🤣
Oh trust me, I feel that. When I applied last cycle I got into 2/6 schools. While on the one hand I’m happy to have gotten into my top two schools, I’m still a bit bitter a year later that I got 4 rejections without interviews even with a masters degree. All it takes is one though, and I truly wish you success with the rest of this cycle!!

Same!! I truly loved my program, but it’s neat seeing how different people’s graduate experiences are. I loved the upper level science classes I got to take, but the research is what really sealed it for me. It’s good for people considering graduate school to see that there are different options, whether it’s research heavy, course heavy, or somewhere in the middle, they just have to look around!

YES! ✊🏻 I love that you got into your top schools! I also feel you when you mentioned being bitter that some schools completely overlooked you, given your achievements. That's the hard part of this process--not letting it drag your morale through the mud. But all it took was one yes and here you are! You also found a program you loved and that's the best feeling. In a weird way, I'm glad those rejections in prior years got me here because I can't say enough good things about what I've learned in my program. BUT, now I am ready for vet school, 100%.

Oh yea didn’t think you were downplaying it. Just wanted to offer my perspective to show truly how variable it is. I just wish schools gave it more weight bc I felt like I sold my soul to get that mf degree 🤣🤣 but I totally understand why undergrad is weighted the way it is bc everyone takes the same prerequisites. I think I’m just feeling scorned overall lol
Heavy on the selling of the soul part!! 🥹

speaking of grade inflation, can we talk about how some private colleges grade their undergrads easier? I saw an o chem graded exam from someone in my family, and let me tell you, all those partial credits wouldn’t fly at my public college

My gigantic public university switched the format of all chemistry and physics class 2 years after I took the courses.
My format: completely 100% in person, barely any partial credit, professors literally WANTED to give u low grades (they explicitly said they barely give As and enjoy Cs). They even told us the exams were meant to stump us and “doing well” in the 2 orgo classes was passing the class.
New format: all exams are online and OPEN NOTE with professors all following the same exams and no anti-cheating software is used for the exams and partial credit can be argued to TAs
And these are the people I’m competing with for admission. I’ve spoken to these students bc they were in my classes as a graduate TA and they said nobody gets below an A- anymore in any chem1/2 orgo1/2 and physics1/2 😙😙😙😙😎😎😎😎🤩🤩🤩 which is rlly good and cool for THEM but not me who is applying with the “same classes” ☹️

It’s absolutely frustrating, but for anyone younger reading these posts, these types of things are exactly why we tell high school kids and younger prospective pre-vet students that where you go to school doesn’t matter. while there may be some element of rigor considered, but it’s going to be minor and in the end, taking 15-18 credits and getting a 4.0 or close to it it going to be better than taking 20-24 credits and being overcommitted and getting a 3.5 or lower. Like you may get some consideration and a nod that you were doing a lot, but it’s probably better imo to go slower and do better if circumstances allow. Go to the cheaper school. Figure out which professors are easier, there’s no shame in that. The stats matter and it’s definitely hard to compare school to school but the stats are what matter in the end, whether talking about vet hours or GPA or whatever. And yes I know that it can stink to overcome those if you’re on the below average side, especially if you’re a nontrad or something like many here in this thread.

And also, on the topic of grade inflation, grade inflation 100% still occurs in veterinary school, so don’t think that’s a unique situation you’re done dealing with when you leave undergrad. Especially if you’re pursuing internship and residency. My vet school GPA was a 3.2 and I was right at 50% on class rank. At the school where I did my residency halfway across the country, we were outright told by our faculty that averages on our exams we gave should ideally be between A- and a B, and I was friendly with a 4th yr student who I know had a 3.2 at that university and their class rank was like very bottom of the class, like 85th percentile or something. (And no judgement, that person is a specialist in my field now too and they’re great!) But we had the same GPA, but my school just tested and graded subjectively harder. That’s why internships and residencies use class rank as a metric, but some schools are getting away from that too so what are they gonna use next? It’s very frustrating but also a constantly evolving cycle.

soooo what do you think the chances are for decisions coming out on Friday the 13th? (spooky day for spooky decisions?)

My portal said "Your prerequisite coursework has not yet been assessed by LSU SVM Admissions". Is it not a good sign? 🙁

I think it said that until final decisions were released last year. I could be wrong, but I’m almost certain I didn’t see a change until the date they released decisions and added what classes you were missing.

Mine still says “Folder Under Review” I hope that’s not bad.
I think everyone's says that right now. I'm IS and mine still says that as well. My thought is they probably hoped to be able to update as they go but I imagine with 2,600 people applying they probably won't update it until they need to with decisions.

I’m hoping they do come out tomorrow, hell I’d be happy if they came out today! Waiting is driving me nuts, I feel like a crazy person between checking the portal, my email, and this forum every 15 minutes

SAME like im supposed to be studying for finals right now but vet school is consuming my every thought

Honestly I'm extremely nervous. 2,600 applicants and only 50ish out of state seats....it seems almost impossible. Ugh. I wish my in-state vet school wasn't so GPA-focused since I have a "lower" GPA. If it happens tomorrow or next week, I hope we all end up where we need to be. We worked so hard to even have the ability to/meet the requirements to apply!

What is your in-state school (if you don't mind me asking)?

I agree! My in-state school is also like this which makes the process even harder knowing I am fully relying on an OOS seat now.

I do not envy him
Im an IS applicant and ive been in close quarters with a lot of the LSU vet med Staff and dean and I do know he goes through every application and makes the final decision on who gets accepted or not. He reads through all the applications and notes to see why the committee voted to accept or reject an applicant and considering they got 2,600 applicants this go around that def can take awhile when you're the only person going through them at the end. We just gotta stay patient and let everything work in God's favor!!
So you speak with and see the dean on a daily basis?

Do we think they will do interviews this year or not? Also does anyone know about their waitlist like how quickly it moves, how many people get pulled off, etc.
