Lurkers, don't be shy!

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
So, I've been around for a little while, although I actually didn't find SDN until AFTER apps were due this past cycle, so at first I didn't join, because the hard part was over, right? You can tell I hadn't done this before... Been mostly around the OkSU, Auburn, and TAMU forums, and am trying not to be a lurker, but a lot of times, I find myself with an opinion that someone else has already voiced, so I tend to just pass on posting.

Anyway, since I never actually introduced myself:

I'm 23 and currently live in Dallas, TX. I grew up in Plano, just north of Dallas, but did my undergrad at Auburn (War Eagle!). Even though I was hooked on Animal Science all four years I was there and was involved in the Pre-Vet club, I felt like I wasn't quite ready to commit to the time/debt/life of becoming a vet...I hadn't experienced enough! So I did an internship and have since been working full time, and now...here I am! Texas A&M c/o 2014! Woo! :soexcited: And SDN has answered a lot of questions for me, and I will try to do the same for others!

I thought about just staying a lurker, but might as well post!

I'm 23 and graduated last May with my Bio degree. Vet school had been on my mind all throughout undergrad and I shadowed vets during the summers, but could never fully commit to the idea of vet school. Basically, I had no confidence in the thought of my being accepted and attending vet school. After completing an internship at a wildlife rehab center this past August/Sept. I knew that this was definitely what I wanted out of life no matter how long it took me.

So I accomplished my one mission in life so far of moving out of FL and to VA. Goal accomplished. Got a job as a vet nurse assistant, found a large animal vet to shadow who mainly does cattle and other farm animals, and recently found a wildlife rehab center to volunteer at and I plan on applying this cycle! Life is good. 🙂 However, I was a weenie and didn't take physics so I'm going to have to take it this coming year. I'm sure that'll hurt me on the application process, but oh well. You live with your past mistakes I guess.

I look forward to being a part of the pre-vet forum!

(many Penn c/o 2014 lurkers joined our fb group too lol)
I was one of those lurkers lol. But i didn't join until there were a bunch of members so no one wondered where i had heard about it.

So all you new people should all start posting in other threads now that you've broken the ice! Don't say anything stupid and no one will bite your head off 😛. j/k

Plus, even if you say something to piss everyone off, you're not tied to your handle/avatar yet anyway... so just get a new account and start fresh!!! If anything, posts that piss people off are at least very entertaining. You'd be contributing to a great cause.😀

naw, just trying to pull out the shy noobs out of their shells. They're half poking it out already, they just need to know extending it all the way won't get them decapitated... (and if it does, they can grow a new head?)

Yeah I'm pretty sure noobs have that type of regenerative capability. Sooo... who else wants to take the bait? We're waiting :meanie:

Definitely guilty of being a lurker for a long time...like 6 months? 🙄

In my defense, I was thrown off a horse at school and had to stay home/take a medical leave with a compound tib/fib fracture of my right leg, so SDN and mybrokenleg.com were my two best friends!

I'm now back at school (though I have to re-take all of my first semester classes next fall 😡 ) I'm a freshman in undergrad with a Biology major. Unfortunately, I don't yet have a lot of vet experience but this summer I will be volunteering at a Wildlife Rehab Clinic in my area and hopefully shadowing my vet. She has allowed me to come down for a couple of hours here and there to observe little procedures (teeth cleaning, tumor removals) but I haven't kept track.

My IS is MU (LOVE the 2 + 2 schedule!) and I want to have a very mixed practice (small, exotic and non-equine large animals) but I'm not opposed to anything at this point.

Thank you very much for making this thread! I probably would still be a lurker without it, lol.

I was one of those lurkers lol. But i didn't join until there were a bunch of members so no one wondered where i had heard about it.

lol man thats sneaky hahaha i feel like being a lurker is harder than just being an active member. well, feel free to post more often and you can add your name to the final decisions thread.

its so weird, when i joined...i just jumped right in. i couldnt control myself enough to just sit back and read lol i dont know how you lurkers do it! i think i was searching the threads just waiting for one that "fit" so i could post in it lol

Shoot I was freaking excited to find a pre-vet forum! I had actively searched for one in the past, but SDN didn't come up. I stumbled upon SDN from some other site which I don't even remember now.

My friends who were pre-vet were just as lost as I was, so they weren't much help lol. SDN was like an oasis. No way was I going to wait to jump in.

Hi there! I was a lurker wayyy back when and have just recently returned to the SDN family. I found this site in high school, thought it was the coolest thing ever, stayed around long enough to see stats from terrifyingly fabulous applicants, and proceeded to get right off in order to wreck havoc during my teenaged days, promising myself that if I didn’t fail too miserably in life I would be back. Annnnndddd, here I am!!! I’ll be applying in the fall (provided no disastrous finals results - ahem, should be studying now then….) and am so excited to be back to SDN. I’m a Canadian, so I am a little jealous of your fancy VMCAS and multiple school options, but despite my best efforts at hoping for a trust fund to appear, there is no sign of it yet so I’ll be sticking with government subsidized veterinary education at OVC. I’m currently in Hong Kong on exchange for my third year and wishing I never had to return home from Asia. So that’s about all from me!
xo lib

Welcome (back)!

thought it was the coolest thing ever,

Oh it is. The phrase "next best thing since sliced bread" refers specifically to this forum.

Oooh, they're excellent! I actually was accepted for an internship there my freshman year (summer as well), when they had first introduced the intership program. Then I became ill, and unfortunately, I had to make up classes during the next two summers to stay on track with my major. Then I decided to go vet med and the internship didn't allow me to get the experience I needed. (I'm seriously lacking in vet exp, but have a ton of animal exp).

They're so nice over there! Don't stress. Although I have to admit I will be super jealous of you because you will be getting to do something that I had wanted to do but couldn't because of extenuating circumstances.

:-D

So I got the email yesterday, notifying me that I got the internship! I start sometime next week I think...I am beyond excited!!

I found out that not only will I be getting direct animal contact with wildlife but also veterinary experience sine the vet comes on campus once a week to take care of the animals. =)

Just thought I would provide a little update... (Also possibly getting a night job at an Emergency clinic!)

Hi all,

I am a way non-traditional student, 46 years old, who after practicing law for 15+ years, decided to 'look into' vet school early last August. Fortunately, since I had always hoped to go to vet school, I had all but four of my prereqs and began taking those classes last Fall. I applied to one school - my IS school- last cycle and miraculously was accepted so I will be starting vet school this August. I guess that I should also say that even though I have been working in another profession, I do have quite a bit of animal/vet experience and have bred and shown whippets for many years as well.

I am really, really excited to be starting vet school (and a bit nervous, too) and thanks to all of you regular posters for all of the helpful tips and information!

Just found this forum--and proceeded to spend the next week pouring over every thread 🙂 I have a good undergrad gpa (about a 3.7) with a bachelors in environmental science but am currently attending a post-bacc at UPenn (to complete my pre-reqs) and my gpa is not so hot (about a 3.25)--those competitive undergrads are kicking my butt! Experience in small animal clinics, zoo internship, wildlife rehab center and am currently doing ride alongs with a large animal vet. It was great to find this forum but was a little disheartened by some of stats posts--while there were some exceptions, most successful applicants have amazing gpas and loads of research experience. Haha, duh, I do know it's hard to get into vet school--but seeing it in type just brings the point home. Thanks to all who make this forum such a nice and lively place! I promise to start some new threads to do my part to keep it lively 🙂

:welcome: Hello new SDNers!

I love your name, goatvet! I'm guessing you're a fellow goat lover?

If you have personal livestock experience, that may add something to your app (depending on the school). Most research experience is somewhat limited--most people do not have significant/published research. Are you applying for c/o 2015?

Gilch-yes! I do have a weird affinity for goats--and who doesn't love goat cheese? It's wonderful to meet someone who also loves goats! If there were a goat specialty I'd be in it 🙂 Unfortunately no personal experience with livestock (grew up in the suburbs) but some zoo handling experience and am tacking on specifically veterinary experience in livestock. I will be applying this cycle (c/o 2015) but feel that my application will be unimpressive. I don't have an overwhelming amount of experience--it's varied but I haven't logged that many hours in any specific area. While I thought the UPenn post-bacc would help (fancy ivy league name and all that) I think I would have been better off going to another post-bacc where perhaps I would have done better---although who knows? maybe my grades would be the same. I'd really like to get in this cycle because although 25 is not especially old for applying to veterinary school, I would like to feel like I'm moving toward a future career. I apologize for the long post--and for treating you like my own personal therapist---clearly I've spent a bit too much time with the cows this week and am a little starved for human interaction +pity+

1 member of the no-goat cheese-loving crew here!
😱 👎 :nono: etc.

I would love to be a goat only vet! Unfortunately, that simply is not possible just about anywhere in the US. There are some goat/sheep people, but I don't know how much time I'd want to spend around woolly-wannabes. So I'm officially pre food animal.

It sounds like you are not too badly off--research isn't mandatory and most schools like breadth of vet experience, which it sounds like you are getting. Have you taken the GRE yet?

WELCOME!! 😀

goatvet- yes i love goats!! dont have a lot of experience with them but I have bottle fed them and fed them crackers when i was a kid at Grants Farm lol that was my fav. part of the park!

whippetsrule- congrats on your acceptance!! i am also really really excited....and the nervousness is starting to come around too, especially since I am starting to pack my things to get ready for the move :scared:

I am guilty of being a major lurker, however right now I am mainly here to get a little education on the admissions process and what I need to be doing until it's my turn to apply...I'm going to (hopefully) be class of 2017! I would've been class of 2015, but I switched around schools a lot and blah blah blah. Hello to you all!

Edited to say that I hope to work with wildlife/zoo species or small animals. I'm also really interested in nutrition and homeopathic medicine. Wooo!

Gilch--haven't taken the GRE yet--planning to take it in July and again in Sept so we'll see how that goes.
BlackKat--not sure if you're from Philly originally but if not then welcome! It's a super-fun city for the few times you'll be free from homework and studying 🙂

Lurker here! I imagine I'll be asking some questions in the future, so I might as well get started with the introduction now...

I'm a non-trad, turning a whopping 30 in a month. No offense to those of you who are older, but 30 just seems kind of...special, in the not-really-special way.

I graduated the first time around with a BA in English, worked very successfully for 6 years for a large communications company while my husband finished grad school, and am now back to being a student to finish my science prereqs, since you don't really take a lot of those as an English major!

I'm hoping to get into Penn, and am working my butt off this summer with a zoo internship, shadowing at two different SA practices, and studying for the GRE (again! can't believe scores are only good for 5 years!).

Even though it's been pretty stressful so far, and very difficult for me to go from being the successful, bread-winning business woman, I can not explain how excited I am to finally have the opportunity to pursue this as a career!

Hi everyone!
I've been a member who never posts (keep meaning to, then have to get off my computer) and a lurker...feeling guilty and intrigued by the nice open welcome, so I took the plunge!
Love all the posts; you are all very inspirational to me, as a mom of 5 getting back into the prevet game at (yipes) 40+. Doing post-bacc at USM and seriously would love to go to Tufts. That's it in a nutshell!

Hi Quackedup,

It's nice to see other 40 + in the mix. Met with the admissions advisor from my in state last week, and he said they love the non-trads because we bring a different perspective to the class. it was very encouraging.

Welcome and good luck!!!

I should probably introduce myself even though I've made only a couple posts...

I'm starting my second year of college, and didn't decide I wanted to be a vet until my senior year of high school (and really only because I'd eliminated everything else, and veterinary work fascinated me. I think I'm the only person who has responded to a text that said "My horse has to have stitches! 🙁" with "Can I watch?"). So, I thought I had three more years left, and plenty of time start getting experience, so I don't have any hours worked at a veterinary clinic yet. And the local animal shelter wouldn't let me volunteer until I was 18, and since I'm the baby of the class, I wasn't really 18 in time to get any hours in.

And then, my adviser points out last semester that I really don't have that many credit hours left to go until I can apply (38, to be exact, 2 years thanks to chemistry) to vet school for the first time (I jumped the gun as far as getting college hours, I'm ahead of the game... Dual credit, AP, and SAT were my best friends for getting a semester's worth of hours before I even started).

So now, in the next year and a half or so, I need to start racking up hours in time to apply. Fun stuff, right? 🙄 I'll make it work though.

Well, actually, I do have SOME hours. I spent an entire day watching a vet in the area of my college to embryo transfers. 8 hours of horse embryo transfers... I'm not gonna lie, after the first 30, it becomes a boring process to watch. They were clone embryos though so it was cool.

well ill introduce myself as well I have been looking at this forum for a while and I just recently registered.I am 21 years old and currently a junior pursing a B.S. in Biology and I am planning on applying to vet school in 2 years after I get my degree and finish all the pre-reqs for the schools of my choice. So hello everyone it is nice to meet you all.

Hi! I am new here but found this site several months back and have been lurking for quite a while I'm embarrassed to say 😳 but I'm thrilled to get to know everyone on here, this is an excellent site. A little background on me, I have always loved animals and dreamed of being a vet ever since I can remember (I'm sure that's what everyone says haha) and have always had a passion for cats (I currently own 3 and always had one or more growing up). I have been a dog groomer for the past two years (cat in the last month) and have been having a hard time deciding between opening my own grooming business or trying for vet school. I recently started grooming at an animal hospital and I get to work closely with some of the vets and have been able to witness some of the things that go on from day to day, such as surgeries, and my passion for vet is being reignited since working there. Since this is my first job at a vet clinic I am trying to keep observing in the next few weeks to make 100% sure that is the way I want to go. If that is what I decide then I am going to try to become a tech there. If I do decide on Vet med for sure my school of choice would be Cornell because of their Feline Health Center but would consider my IS of UTK. I would love to be a feline exclusive vet offering adoptions, boarding, and grooming someday. But I've got to make up my mind and stick to it, I am very thankful to be working at this vet office and I am glad for the opportunities that may arise 🙂

Thanks for letting me lay all that out for you guys

Sounds like you are going about it the right way. You have lots of animal experience and you will be getting the vet experience necessary. Just make sure you are aware of the academic requirements necessary to get into and survive in vet school. If you've got that covered, then great. Good luck and welcome aboard.

Hi. I have been reading for a while but never have any time to write. But school is finally out so now I do🙂. Anyway I am a junior in college. I live on a farm and raise dairy goats (Nubians and Alpines). I intern at a SA clinic and I am looking to shadow a LA vet this summer. I am interested in mixed practice, espically small ruminants.
Nice to meet everyone

Was JUST about to go "well you haven't told us YOUR story yet" and then actually looked at the username instead of just the avatar.

I figure I should finally introduce myself. I'll be graduating this December at the ripe 'ol age of 25 (thus crushing my dreams of graduating before the age of 25. I'll miss it by 3 measly months). I'm debating whether or not to apply this cycle since I have oh... roughly... 8 hours of veterinary experience. Most of my animal experience is with wildlife rehab and therapeutic riding which gave me some basic horse handling experience. Hopefully I'll find somewhere to shadow this summer so I can at least start slowly accumulating some hours. If not, I've already failed one age related goal so, why should I expect to get through vet school by 30? 😀

Age is just a number don't sweat it.

Let me impart some karate-kid like wisdom on you.. ..

When I was 30 I started taking Tae Kwan Do from a 9th level grandmaster (at the time one of only 3 in the U.S). One day he complimented me on my progress and I whined that I wish I had started when I was younger. He responded "But you are doing it today. That is all that matters," and walked away. Real story. It has stuck with me the rest of my life.

Or as they say in management accounting... "historical costs are irrevelant".

Sounds like Finance to me. :meanie:

JtotheL, I'll be 25 on September 14th. Better not be calling me old. Age related goals are silly - isn't the goal itself enough? Why do you need to throw in the age factor too?

Hey everyone! I've been lurking here since...oh...final exam week, when my friend just happened to turn me on to this wonderful, helpful, and ridiculously addicting site. I had to use major self control to get through all my finals without spending too much time here, but now that it's summer I can catch up on everything and finally start posting.

Some background: I just finished my sophomore year as an animal science major at Michigan State. I'm applying this summer through what I believe is the same program psilovethomas is applying through. (small world!). Basically, I apply in summer of 2010 and, if accepted, start vet school in fall of 2012 contingent on achieving my bachelor's degree.

My grandpa was and my dad currently is the veterinarian in my small-town hometown, and I hope to follow in their footsteps. It's a mixed rural practice: nothing fancy at all, but it offers a variety and a downright cozy feeling that I've loved since...well...forever, I guess.

I'm looking forward to being a lurker no more and enjoying this freaking awesome site 🙂

Haha, no, of course not. I certainly don't think I'm old (though I did feel old when I realized my college aged friends couldn't go out to the bars with me one night). I just decided 30 would be a nice even number to be finished by. I'm not terribly worried one way or another about what happens (unless of course I'm still applying when I'm 30. Then I may have to rethink a couple of things). I think perhaps the tone of my post came across a bit more serious than I intended it to. 😛

Hi Klizard! Have you emailed the CVM with your letter of intent to get the application? Do you know anyone else applying through vet scholars?

Hi! I emailed my letter of intent a couple weeks ago and I got an e-mail last week from admissions that layed down a timeline for everything. However, they're not sending out the part of the application that applies to vet scholar applicants until October, after they receive our VMCAS application. Basically, all there is to work on until October 1 is VMCAS and getting the 3 letters of rec. I know of 4 or 5 other applicants, but I'm sure there are quite a few more 🙂

Hello! Now seems a good time as any to introduce myself. I'm a 20-year old undergrad at the University of Connecticut. My major is Animal Science. This fall I'm entering my 7th and final semester, but I'm virtually done with my degree. I'm applying right now as a C/O 2015.
Over the past 6 years, I've had experiences with a feline vet clinic, an opthalamologist vet, an equine vet, and the Beardsley zoo. Just went on a great World Vets trip last week. This summer I'm interning at a different vet clinic than before and getting hours at a horse farm.
To my relief, I'm done with GREs and the GRE Biology tests.

I've been lurking on this site on an off since last summer. These forums have helped to keep me on track. Just haven't posted yet.. so hello!

what did you think of the world vets trip? i know there was some talk on the SDN trip about doing world vets or vida and they went with vida. How much hands on experience did you get? Do they let you perform spays/neuters as an undergrad or current vet student? how were the living conditions? one difference i saw from the sites were that vida looks more natural and world vets seems to stay at a nice place, from the pics it almost looks like a resort house with a pool. I am interested in these trips but i'm not sure which one. I could do either type of living condition but if both provide you with the same hands on activity then i'd probably pick the one with the nicer conditions so it seems like a vacation too haha

I think I'll formally introduce myself as well, even though I've made some posts. I've been a lurker for more than two years but I'm ridiculously shy and quiet so I didn't join until this past application cycle. I'm 21 and I just graduated with a B.S in Biology. I don't have a lots of SA experience, maybe 100 hours. Most of my vet and animal experience comes from aquatic animal medicine from the aquarium in town that I did an internship at. I also have some animal experience with rehabilitating abused dogs at a shelter in Arizona, and some farm animal experience from when I moved to Florida and some more aquatic animal experience from a short stay at a marine institute in California. I didn't have the best of luck this past application cycle. I'm on the waitlists for both Mizzou and Tennessee so I'm hoping my luck will be a little better this application cycle, especially since I was able to improve my GRE scores and I'm getting more SA and equine experience this summer. Although I'm pretty sure that I'm in love with SDN and all the help it has given me over the past couple of years, I like lurking a little more (it's fun to be mysterious 😉) and since i'm now a pro at it, i might just stick with it...plus the World Cup starts in a week, which is going to be the more important month of my year. Soccer has pretty much been my life for the past 17 years and there's no way I am missing a single game, so I think I'm just going to disappear for the next month.

Hm, I got the timeline in April and I haven't even sent my letter of intent yet. Do you know what the average/competitive GPA is for vet scholars?

Hi! I've been lurking on here for a bit now and never posted anything and for that I apologize! For a little background, I am 21 and entering my senior year of undergrad this fall. I'm an animal science major, and have 3 summers worth of experience at a small animal clinic. Other than that my animal experience has not been too diverse. I will be working at the horse barn at my school this fall, to gain a bit of diversity. I'll be applying this summer for the class of 2015, and am already incredibly overwhelmed by all of it. I'm just trying to take everything one step at a time and see where it all goes. Hope everyone else is enjoying their summers so far!

That is wonderful news. I have posted a few times, but lurk a lot. I am (not afraid to say) 44 yo. I currently have 2 dogs and 11 cats (so I am a master operator of the pooper scooper). I have always wanted to be a vet, but life events have detoured me several times throughout my education. I will finally have my B.A. in biology in May 2011, and this cycle will be my first time applying. I can't believe that I finally made it to the application process. It will be nice having everyone on this site to lean on for support and to share in the anxiety. In reference to the very first post under this heading, if anyone who has been accepted to vet school is willing to share their personal statement, please feel free to send it to me. I'll introduce myself! I'm new, but I have made one other post before. I'm a female, twenty-one, and a junior in college. I'm going to apply this year, probably to UF, Tennessee, and Tuskegee, but I'm SUPER nervous about getting in! It seems like everyone on here has such amazing stats, and I'm kind of just average. But anyway, everyone on here has been super nice and I'm glad to have found this forum! 😀

We are all nervous! The SDN "family" will help you through the nail biting, hair splitting application process. Welcome, and best of luck! There are many amazing stories on this forum from people who have below average stats who were accepted to veterinary school.
