Maryland Class of 2025 Interview/Acceptance Thread

Hey guys!
Congrats to those who were accepted yesterday.
To those who are awaiting a status update or haven't even interviewed yet, DO NOT GIVE UP HOPE

Here is how things go in a "normal" cycle
- Pre-December interviews
- Early December: round 1 of acceptances
- Mid-December: round 2 of acceptances
- Post-December interviews until March with monthly rounds of acceptances
People will accept, then decline, or decline from the get-go as they get numerous acceptances and clearly can only pick 1 school. First deposit is usually due 2-4 weeks after notice of acceptance. There is a second deposit in the spring, as people who change their mind, more people get accepted.

Covid differences
- first round yesterday is likely the only December round. The next two weeks are holiday weeks, so they will probably just manage those who were accepted and people who are interviewing soon
- don't expect another round of acceptances until the new year
- interviews are being held through April, not March!

Do NOT bother the Admissions office with numerous calls and emails. Do not email with an update until the new year. Be polite, be patient, remember dentistry requires people skills

I'm a general dentist who graduated in 2018 and am more than happy to answer questions in the thread or via PM 🙂

Asking cause Idk how soon I need to put the deposit down at another school. UMD is my top choice so I really hope it comes out soon
I would wait until the last day to be honest to make that deposit, but when that day comes if you can picture yourself there pending its your only choice, make that deposit. They give you time for a reason.

Remember a thousand dollars "lost" to give up that earlier spot when you get accepted to your top choice is such a small amount in the big picture.

Endgoal: become a dentist by attending a school you will be happy at!

Do you think i get noticed if I get rejected soon (I interviewed today)
No, rejections are typically handed out later in the cycle or whenever a school makes a decision. When I interviewed post december last cycle people in my group got their acceptances a couple days afterward and I got my rejection months later

I got accepted to one school and their deposit is due in January. My top choice however is UMD and I was wondering if I heard from UMD after paying the deposit, would I be allowed to back out of the other school? Obviously I would forfeit the deposit but you are allowed to back out and accept another schools offer, right?

Yes you can accept other schools and just lose the deposit

Anyone who hasn’t interviewed yet just get an email? Does this mean we will get an interview or we’ll just find out if we got rejected??

They send it out to everyone who hasn’t gotten an interview to narrow their options from the ones that got accepted to other schools and aren’t considering Maryland anymore.

Anyone who was accepted receive information about merit scholarships? My interview notes appear a bit quiet on that topic, might have gotten past me...

Very few people recieve scholarships from the get-go. A ton of scholarships are available once in school, but still limited. You apply in the fall online for them.
I would complete your FAFSA once you are able to in the new year so you can get your financial aid package earlier. I recieved some grants and Health Professions Loans directly from UMB in addition to the normal direct loans.

Any current UMD students I can talk to? I am trying to decide between Maryland and UMich and UMich seems to be a good package. Maryland was my other top choice and I don't want to write it off without talking to more students first, especially because I can attend without anymore schooling

It is ver possible that someone hasn't made it yet. Whoever does should 100% be committed to attending versus rushing it
I think it's usually someone who is enrolled at the school that makes the FB pages, not an incoming student.

Did anyone get email about setting up student account but has not received an acceptance yet?

Did anybody get anything from Maryland after paying deposit/sending the receipt? I did this a while back but I haven't heard anything when the other school I paid the deposit at has given me a matriculation checklist already

i got that email, but i haven't even been invited for an interview yet? i wonder if it was a mistake?

Not yet! Please let me know if you hear back from them.

Just a general reminder that it is technically winter break, so don't expect to hear much from the school for at least another week.

What have y'all seen from those UMID setup emails? I interviewed in late November but wasn't accepted in their first round. I didn't even receive it; lol it was my dad that received the notice. When I login, it say under the account management that my primary affiliation is student? The notice said explicitly in red letters that this wasn't an acceptance letter. Bizarre, I figure it's a system glitch.

Got an interview invite. Anyone know how what the tuition is for OOS students?

I will decline the interview, hopefully someone else will get the spot. Good luck!

it’s more complicated then that . The school requires you to prove that you did not move to maryland for educational purposes only.
It was my understanding that most OOS students who apply for in-state residency get it. Any current students that can shed light on how often this happens?

That's correct. the document on their website says that you have to prove that you had other motives than only educational purposes.
From what I remember in the interview day they mentioned that many students get in-state tuition after the first year

I had the interview this morning and the dental students in the zoom said that majority got in state tuition on their first try for the last three years of dental school. You have to “prove” that you are active as a “state citizen” so keeping receipts of you going to restaurants or shops in the state to strengthen your case of being and in-state applicant. She also hinted that its likely to hear more acceptances once the first wave of acceptances deposit deadline occurs.

Yeah I understand this, my question is what does one need to do in order to prove this?
Get a maryland’s driver license, register to vote in the state of maryland, file taxes in maryland, switch over any vechile registrations, have a lease etc ..

Alum here. Literally 99% of people get IS after first year. You have to live in Maryland for 12 months. step 1, get a lease and change over your driver's license. Step 2, be social, make friends, get a relationship, find a church, join a gym, do community service, have a life outside of dental school. Step 3, file your taxes as a Maryland resident. Step 4 complete your application on time and have all supporting documents ready.

The average student debt by graduation is around 255k last I heard, which is below the national average.

I just submitted my second deposit and sent them the second deposit form. I have officially chosen to attend University of Maryland. I have also sent them all of my transcripts. Is there any sort of confirmation that everything is in order? UMich has a spread sheet that updates in real time so you always know if the university got it or not.

Is the matriculation path set in stone now? I don't want to be in a situation where suddenly Maryland springs new requirements on me after I drop Michigan
