Michigan State University c/o 2023

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I wonder, do they waitlist everyone? I haven't seen any rejections.

I’m not 100% sure for OOS but for IS no one is rejected if they got an interview they just get in or waitlisted!

Is anyone here gonna apply for the brush summer research thing

I haven’t seen anything about this. What kind of research is it, and for what summer is it for?
It’s for this upcoming summer, I got an email saying I qualified for it this morning

Well that’s an exciting opportunity, I did not get an email like that so you must be particularly qualified for it 🙂

I got this email as well. Can you explain and tell us about it 🙂

I'm happy to talk about my experiences but in this case I feel like it's easier to do by PM. So feel free (you or anyone else) to message me if you do want to ask questions.

I will say in general though that I thought it was a great experience and I highly recommend it. Especially if you dont have other plans for your summer.

Does anyone know if its possible to get instate, if admitted for out of state? I got accepted to my instate school, however Michigan is definitely my top choice, especially if the tuition was comparable.

At the information session at my interview, we were told it’s very difficult to obtain in-state tuition. Like, you’d have to marry someone who already has Michigan residency. During 4th year rotations, you can sign a contract to agree to work in the state for at least 1 additional year after graduation, and the school will reimburse you for OOS tuition for your final year. The first 3 years are non-negotiable OOS.

The easiest way is if you or your spouse are honorably discharged veterans

Is that reimbursement for the entire tuition of the 4th year? Or just part of it

Just the difference in tuition between in state and out of state tuition. It's still a pretty good chunk of change

Would any current students be willing to give me some general averages of what you (and/or your friends) pay in living expenses? MSU estimates $1700 a month in living expenses and that seems a little high to me. That includes health insurance and any non-tution expenses. I obviously will err on the higher side, but I'd like to have a better idea of what students actually pay. I know situations are all different and have huge variability, but curious what people budget for.

Also, any suggestions on housing that is dog friendly would be appreciated.

Feel free to PM me!

I live alone and I have pets so that increases my expenses as compared to someone who has roommates and/or no pets but I think the estimate is pretty close to accurate for me.

I accepted last wednesday and havent heard yet.
To those who have accepted your seat and submitted the intent to enroll form and paid the deposit... how long did it take to hear something back? Even something like a confirmation?

IS: I submitted my online application on January 12th. Computer generated confirmations only.
Submitted my intent to enroll form January 22nd, received confirmation from admissions that they received it and put it in my file the 23rd.
Submitted my tuition deposit February 16th. Computer generated receipt only.
February 26th received my student ID information.

Hope that helps 🙂

So depends on where you live, what you want. I've seen rentals for $600-1200. Some places charge per person vs a set amount that you can divide up between roommates.

There is a private cvm rental list for accepted students. Right now there is only a couple listings but they range from $375 renting a private room in a house owned by someone in my class to $1100 for a one bedroom apartment or $900 for a three bedroom house and a couple other options in between.

It really just depends on what you have to have. When we first moved here we only had one weekend to look so opted for a really big two bedroom apartment for $1100. We had a community pool and it was decent but not fancy. We've since purchased but our situation is different than my classmates who could move every year if they wanted.
So you decided second year to purchase? I’m currently on the fence trying to decide if we want to purchase (since it’ll be four years) or if we want to rent first (being a first time home buyer half way across the country starting vet school sounds like a lot) and we are kind of stuck on what direction we want to take.

We moved before I applied to establish residency. We purchased before first year. We are not first time homeowners but gotta say we are considering selling because home ownership is a B....

If you have any advice on any part of this (buying locations, renting locations, your thoughts on home ownership in Lansing and if it’s worth the pain) I would love and appreciate it 🙂

I'm definitely the wrong person to ask about location as I'm a transplant. Just be aware if you buy that there is always work to be done on a home and just not a lot of extra time on weekends to do it. It will depend on what your priorities are for your free time

One of the residents I'm on service with has had a constant 3 year on going home improvement going on throughout residency.
They're buying new construction when they move on

That sounds like a lot. Haha

I just know we’ll put our money towards something and we could lower our monthly payment buying, but I like people reminding me the cons to buying a house too.

I also live alone and that definitely increases the cost of things so that's fairly accurate for me but if you want to have roommates it can be cheaper

Thanks guys!

I rent a house in the Old Everett neighborhood in Lansing, and while it's maybe more money each month than a mortgage, I am super happy with my living situation. No taxes, upkeep, or repairs to worry about, but all the benefits of living in a house. I hardly have time for myself sometimes, so I couldn't imagine having to arrange maintenance if need be. Glad to have my landlords for that!

Please remove that link. As stated, this is only meant to be shared with students in the CVM and placing it on a public forum makes it visible to anyone who pops through here.

Hi. I emailed admission a few weeks ago about a facebook page for our class. Just got this back from Candace from Admissions today.

"We do not create the Facebook page. The students in your class have to create one. We did create it last year, but have since decided that we will not be creating one this year... Any student is more than welcome to create a Facebook page for the class. If you are interested, perhaps you can create on for your class and post the link on studentdoctor.net for students to access it. "

I went ahead and created a facebook group. I just joined student doctor network today so I don't know the rules about posting links. However if you search "MSU CVM Class of 2023" in facebook I think you should be able to join the group.

thanks

We don’t have to buy a specific laptop/tablet or anything right?

Kinda random but does anyone know of any good tattooers in the area? I wanna get some work done once I’m up there 😛

I've heard fairly good things for splash of color but it doesn't have much competition in East Lansing.

How do MSU CVM scholarships work? If you receive multiple will they send them at once, or will they send you a package will all scholarships offered at once?

Hey @SkiOtter , what was Simba's sdn name? I know he got some ink done while he was here for summer research

Woo, love it when I get official emails! Sounds like this year they are setting up a D2L to connect the students, and the FB page that our kind friend a few posts back made will be our FB page since they infact are not making one. (So join!)
The email also gave the link for the housing and sale document and said we'll start to hear about everything we'll need to know April 19th!

It's beginningggg 🙂
