Midwestern, Glendale 2012 class

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
So random Sunday thought, I wonder how much extracurricular involvements I will be able to participate in with school schedules. I know it all depends on time management skills.

What are you guys interested in and looking to be involved in?

I personally have strong interest in cardio and autism so I willm find myself gearing towards that direction in school. Also considering a pharmaceutical fraternity for future networking.

Anything having to do with HIV, low income communities, psychological disorders, and veterans. I'm also toying with the idea of fraternities/sororities although I admittedly find them laughable at the college level. No offense to those currently belonging to some sort of system. It just wasn't for me before but maybe some day in the future.

I feel exactly the same way haha. Greek life never interested me in undergrad, but I think it will be a completely different scene now 🙂

I finally received the supplemental app but I have a question. Should I take the time to make a CV?

It is - pharmacy fraternities are professional fraternities, more about networking / development. Oh, and rumor has it, free pizza. Maybe the pizza thing is the student sides of the professional organizations (like APhA).

I understand if you wanted to you could seek out a Greek fraternity...?

Why wouldn't you? It's an opportunity to sell yourself. Take it.

Yah, it's supposedly more about volunteerism and networking. As long as it has a minimal amount of butt kissing, sign me up! 🙂 I guess we'll see when we get there!

the multispecialty clinic on campus, is that a clinic for students health or serving the community?

I'm interested in pharmacy-related technologies (e.g. EMR, automated dispensing machines), psychological disorders, geriatrics, and oncology.

I second xtsukiyox's assessment of pharmacy fraternities/sororities. They have goals and objectives, whereas the usual undergrad ones seem to be mostly about partying.

It is up to you, but it is also up yo them whether they want to offer an interview or not. I don't see why somebody wouldn't want to present themselves in as many ways as possible. I supposethe CV is optional, so so is an acceptance to the school.... So with that being said, WHY WOULD THEY INCLUDE IT, IF THEY DIDN'T WANT YOU TO FILL IT OUT....

Does anyone know how long it takes Midwestern to receive pcat from pharmcas? I took my PCAT sept 26th and my pharmcas was updated OCT 28th. I checked my checklist and it still says pcat expected on my supplemental checklist

I didn't and I got the interview and acceptance. Personally, I feel like they already have all that information from job experiences and volunteer activities listed in your pharmCAS. I don't see any point in beating a dead horse. If you have some fantastic work experience that you really want to reiterate, then by all means, create a CV. If not, then maybe opt out. I think they might use it in your interview as they did with wanttobepharm but I don't think it'll be the deciding factor for whether or not you'll receive a interview invite. 😛 Excess is not always a good thing!

Give them a week. I took it Sep 28th and just recently got my official scores. I'm assuming it'll take at least a few days for Midwestern to electronically process the scores and update your checklist.

My two friends who got accepted and I (about to have an interview this friday) did not make a CV, so I think you'll be fine.

Hey all,

I am thinking hard about applying to Midwestern and I could not find anything on their research programs or stuff like that. The program description on the page does not offer much in depth detail. So what am I going to say when they ask me the big question "Why Midwestern in Glendale?" So far I like it only because it is a 3 yr program. Any other pointers on answering this question during the interview would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

PharmCAS mails on Mondays. The cut off for Monday's mailings is the previous Thursday, end of business, so they can get everything put together in time for the mailman on Monday.

October 28 was Friday, so it missed yesterday's mailing - it should be mailed on Monday, November 7. It makes sense to me that it would take a few days in the mail & a little time to get entered on the checklist.

At some schools, there is an unwritten rule that the "optional" parts of the supplemental are not optional. MWU is obviously not that way, which is very nice. 👍 I'm glad to hear people were admitted both ways (with & without CV).

The reason I felt I wasn't reiterating on a CV is because I really couldn't fit my job responsibilities for work & my main volunteer position in the 150 characters on PharmCAS. I didn't reiterate a whole lot of information so much as expand upon it - although a few of the ECs were the same (how much novel stuff can you say about being a student tutor?). I suppose if you've held relatively self-explanatory jobs, then it would definitely be repetative to make a full-blown CV.

Here's another take on the assignment. Did you ever print your PharmCAS application out on a printer / to a PDF? It didn't look very pretty, did it? I would be willing to hazard that the school gets something similar. Yeah, all the info is there, but do your best features stand out? A CV or resume can do that for you, especially if you're mediocre in the numbers & your experience is what sets you apart. A good CV can also help you look like a professional.

Plus, the interviewers in my group admitted they didn't see the PharmCAS application prior to the interview, just the supplemental. So they would only see your CV. 😛

Well, you're going to answer the "why" yourself. The faculty is very friendly and seems like they'd respond well to this question. How about looking up an appropriate contact at www.midwestern.edu & asking more information about the research as a prospective student? The immediate question that comes to my mind, if you're really in it for the research, is why not U of A? They're known for research.

so why is everyone else choosing Midwestern as their top choice? if i may ask.

The 3 year program is a huge bonus, but the school already knows that. The reason I have Midwestern as a top choice is because of the faculty. They are amazing to work with (from other past work experience) and really show concern for their students. The school is focused on helping students find the right pharmacy path and encourage students to think outside the box. They don't want a cookie-cutter student, they want a student that is going to excel in their profession, work hard, and represent Midwestern well. Some schools just focus on the numbers, but they focus on the student.

Hi, since you've worked with Midwestern before, do you happen to know how to get their stats on NAPLEX, JE, Residency placement %, and rotation sites?

I tried calling, emailing...being ignored left and right lol...no luck so far

Stumbled across this link today... I thought it was kind of neat. Ever wondered what a student's week at MWU looks like? Schedules for P1 & P2 Fall & Winter blocks:
http://www.midwestern.edu/glendale_az_campus/block_schedules.html

Also, academic policies, course descriptions, and electives are listed in the catalog, here:
http://www.midwestern.edu/Glendale_AZ_Campus/Catalog.html

The NAPLEX on MWU site is 2009, but thank you Cynthia for providing that spreadsheet, it was awesome!

Very helpful when you see school's progress year to year

I read up on that also. PS15 is us right? they differentiate by year. Class of 2015 will have orientation on May 30-31 🙁 so early lol.
This block schedule exam is interesting since I've never had any experience in that previously. Hope it'll be manageable.

EDITED: The block schedule shows final examinations, there are still midterms correct?

No problem! I thought it was cool to see the school's progression as well as to be able to see it relative to other schools.

Yup, saw all of that too. I think I searched the entire website before I even received my acceptance.

My gawd, posted residency match information on Facebook group and got lectured by hackerpanda how bad my English is. Damn 😡

LOL Your English isn't that bad. Thanks for looking that info up and then for clarifying. 😛

What do you want me to find out about UOP again? You can email me what you want to know.

Very little new comers post in the thread now. Can't be only 2 interviewed today.

Eh not bad, but kinda tough haha. There were only 14 interviewees today when I went.

Hey how you like it? Let's hear some details and what you think of it

Over all it was pretty good. There were PA students waiting in the same room to be interviewed also. My interview group had really short answers so we ended up having like 8 or 10 questions.

Also, since no one has mentioned it, Midwestern stated that they will let you know whether you've been accepted, waitlisted, or denied within a week of your interview.

Wow, that is cool. The waiting is the hardest part.
Good luck !🙂

guess im the only one here going in for an interview next friday :/

I also interviewed on the 4th, so that makes a grand total of 3 people that have reported.😀

People that interviewed the 4th, what are your backgrounds?

I know majority of those interviewed on the 29th were graduated and worked for a year or two.

Just curious.

Imaging walking into an unknown situation with a room full of unknown people. It would most likely be very stressful with a tense atmosphere.

Now imaging walking into the same room but seeing a familiar face among the crowd of unknowns. This would be an instant relief of pressure. There is now someone you know and can talk to.

I think back to the first day of all the classes I have attended. For the most part, people are quiet and reserved. By the end of the first week everyone is talking with each other like they've been friends for years.

I was wondering if anyone who is interviewing this Friday would like to meet up for coffee either Wed or Thurs night of this week? This way we can create those familiar faces in the crowd. We are all in this together.

Im coming in Thursday evening from cali, do you live in arizona?

Entering the room where everyone was first seated, I felt a bit nervous, but a second year pharmacy student was there to greet all the newcomers and I instantly became more relaxed. We just spent an hour talking, socializing, etc. before the dean came along to give his speech.

Interview was a little nerve-wracking in the beginning when I first entered the room to sit down. However, as the hour went by, I felt more relaxed. The interview really just want to get to know you. Don't rehearse your answers until it seems like you just memorized word for word. Be honest, be genunine, be relaxed, and you'll do just fine. Most if not all the interview questions can be found in the Midwestern CPG "Interview Feedback" in SDN.

Also, don't fidget with hair, look bored, or be obnoxiously opinionated or loud. It just ruins the image and sets up a bad impression. Be sure to thank everyone for their time and keep a firm handshake. Shaking a limp fish is anything but pleasant.

Finally, I had trouble walking at the end of the day. The reason is I'm married to sneakers. Be sure to wear comfortable and, at the same time, professional shoes. You'll be touring around the campus for about an hour.

Hope that helps.

PM me if you have any specific questions about interview day! Good luck everyone, and I hope we all get in. 😀
