MPH 2020: Applied, Accepted, Rejected, Waitlisted

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Hey guys! Are any of you still waiting to hear back from UCI? I haven’t heard back yet so I was just wondering. Congrats to those who received acceptances yesterday!!
Myself as well! Super anxious but I have hope it'll come out this week! Best of luck to everyone still waiting 🙂

Congratulations! Did you receive email or you check the portal?
I believe you are notified by email (according to the website) 🙂

Congrats, me too! What are you doing to prep for it? I'm not sure what to expect since it's the only program I applied to that requires an interview.
Not sure exactly what I’m going to prep. I’m treating it like other phone interviews that I have, and just talk about my interests in public health and how I want to use the degree.

An email telling me to check the portal. It was around 1:00 PM Boston time.
Hey, Congratulations on your acceptance. Can I ask about your stats, if that is okay with you? Thanks

Rejected from USC 🙁 Anyone else hear back?

Still waiting on Columbia and the Cali schools. Applied to HPM

Sorry to hear about USC, good luck with your other schools though!! If you don't mind, can I ask when you submitted your USC application? I haven't heard back from them at all and I was verified 11/26.

Thank you! Sure, my stats are located in my signature. See them below:
GPA - 3.97/4.00 | GRE - V: 154 (64th), Q: 159 (70th), W: 4.0 (57th)

I'm an IMG, and I hold a Master of Science in Clinical Research.

Awesome, thank you! Did you get an admission decision yet? Are they behind?
Lol they finally gave me an admission decision on Feb 6. In their email in Dec 2019 they said they would get back to me by Dec 15th hehe they were almost 2 months behind! I think you will hear back from them soon. Double check you submitted all your documents

I actually emailed them in late Jan that my application was under review for a while and if I needed additional documentation. They responded a day or two days after!
When I submitted my app in December, the confirmation email stated that I would know by February 20, 2020; however, I applied to their online program so I'm not sure if there is a difference in acceptance dates.

Did you get into Yale? Is that where you are planning on going so far?
Yes I got into Yale and JHU. I am still deciding between them at the moment. Inclining towards JHU for the larger alumni network and research opportunities. Waiting for HSPH and UCB to complete the cycle and make a pro con list.

Oooo ya, I would also like to know this!
I applied for the Berkeley Epi program but my primary interest is HCM. Berkeley requires 2 years of FTE post-bachelors and thus I don't meet the requirements for the HCM program!

Wow! Thank you so much! Congratulations once again!!

Ohhh I see, thanks for that! I also applied for HCM and am deciding between Yale, Berkeley, and Boston. Just spoke with a current student from Yale HCM yesterday and she had nothing but incredible things to say so leaning towards Yale! Congrats and thanks again!

For anyone waiting on Maryland, my coworker saw she was accepted in the portal but never got an email. So, make sure to check your portal! This was for the in-person BCH program. I applied to online BCH and mine still says “under graduate school review”

I hope to see you there! Are you planning on going to their admit days?

Thank you!! I submitted 12/1. They received everything the following week. Good luck!!

Yes! Planning on going to the March 30th open house, how about you?
Hi! I was also accepted into Yale's HCM program and was wondering if they would send out an official acceptance letter besides the email from the director? There wasn't a pdf attached and had no school heading within the email..

Does anyone know if you get an outside scholarship if schools take that money out of your financial aid? I want to try to get some outside scholarships but it would be pointless if it just gets taken out, which I know they do for undergrad programs.

I asked WashU this question, and they said that only if the total scholarship amount exceeds the total cost of attendance (not just tuition) will they reduce the amount of scholarship money they gave you.

Hi! Yes, they send an official hard copy letter in the mail! Mine also came with a hand-written note and a YSPH sticker. Congrats!

Does anyone have any thoughts on the health policy MPH at Minnesota vs UNC? I was accepted to both and I was initially very set on UNC, but I'm a bit nervous about the newly overhauled core program -- as well as the fact Gillings seemed primarily geared toward PhDs in my conversations. Both are perfect location-wise for what I want to do (state level policy with a focus on rural health), and the faculty at both are high caliber. I'm waiting to hear from one more school, but these are definitely my top two!

I don't know anything about about UMN but I was accepted for an MSPH in health policy at UNC and from my interview day, they seemed really great.

I spoke to mainly MHA and MSPH students (just the way the interview day was structured) but also chatted with a few policy MPH students afterwards. Everyone was really happy with how supportive the faculty was. In particular, the professor in charge of professional development and career search got extremely high praise for being very committed and having access to a huge network. Every Friday is kept free from coursework and is dedicated exclusively to networking and prof. development. The students all liked the fact that courses are now pass/fail vs a letter grade system. If you're interested in rural health, there're opportunities for research at the Cecil Sheps center.

Another thing that I really appreciated was that it seemed very affordable - most students anticipated graduating with little or no debt, even though most didn't get aid offers at the time they accepted admission. Partly this was because assistantships come with tuition waivers unlike a lot of the private schools and also, it seems almost guaranteed to get NC residence for tuition in the second year.

Good luck making your decision!
