MPH 2020: Applied, Accepted, Rejected, Waitlisted

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I’m still waiting too. This is week 4 for me :/
Yes! I was only accepted on 2/18 but the portal says "Financial Aid award letters are anticipated to be sent within the next 3-4 weeks. Your award letter can be viewed under Status Update" so I'm not too worried yet. It seems like even if you don't get scholarships they still break down the cost of attendance based on others who have received their financial aid information at this point, so I'm sure its coming!
I talked to a current student on Thursday and she told me that she didn’t get any scolarship and never got an email saying that she didn’t get it.

Guys, does anybody know what Harvard looks for in the applicants? I am aware they look at applications holistically, but what actually makes them like/ not like a candidate? I mean any idea about their process or if anyone has heard anything from friends studying there or just anything. Haha, may be, I am just looking for sort of closure and may be I won’t find it, but yeaaa...... I mean I was just wondering that Johns Hopkins is number 1 in public health but it seems like Harvard has a higher rejection rate.
Also curious, particularly for the MPH65 program.

I'm not sure if they do this on a master's level but my friend was rejected from many PhD programs and almost every school she emailed asking why responded with the reason! So you can try that if you really want to know.

On another note, in my experience, admissions decisions have been so arbitrary. Some schools will see an applicant who says they want to work on some specific thing and choose them over someone who may be "stronger" in other ways because they want someone who has that particular interest.

To add on to this, before writing my SOP, I researched all the faculty and picked two or three that had very similar research interests. I addressed it directly in my SOP, not sure if it helped but it may have provided a bit of benefit.

Rejected from Harvard too. Waiting on Columbia to finish off my admission cycle, but I'll most likely be committing to Hopkins next month.

Anyone else attending NYU's Admitted Students Day on March 7 or Hopkins' on March 13?
I will be at NYU!

Hi everyone - since people are starting to make decisions, I figured I'd pull together a spreadsheet similar to the ones that past years' threads have had. This compiles everyone's stats, results, and final decisions for future reference for applicants next year.

This is, of course, completely optional, but I think it will be a good resource for people on this thread and in future threads. Feel free to fill out as much as you want!

2020 MPH Compiled Results

Bumping this since I know a lot of people got results or made decisions today

I submitted my deposit for Yale's MPH in health care management this afternoon! Thankful for this forum for all of the support throughout the admissions process - looking forward to connect with everyone who is going to Yale either at admitted students day on April 6th or in the fall!

Is anyone that applied to UC Berkeley late November still waiting to hear back? I applied to Health and Social Behavior 🙁

Me, for that same program too! Called them today and was told to follow up with the department and they’d get back to me tomorrow hopefully

Thank you for this info! I called them last week and was told I'd hear back before their admitted students day mid-March, but I'll call them tomorrow and see if they can give me a decision. Best of luck to you!

Just got in to Emory BSHE!! Now I have very hard decision to make.... also accepted into GWU GLEPI.... advice please!
Emory has been my dream school since I started high school and I’m also very interested in behavioral sciences plus it’s EMORY but my heart has always been with global infection control and though I’ve only been to GW and DC once, I loved it to. Still no word on $$ which might become the deciding factor

I am! I know you're a different department, but I called the Epidemiology department this morning and they said they started sending out decisions last week and should finish this week. Hopefully that also is true of HSB!

Hey yall. So I need some input and would appreciate it. I was accepted to GWU MHA (+22k), Michigan MHSA (no aid as of now), Columbia MHA(no aid yet as of now), BU MPH-HPM (+35% tuition), USC MHA(no aid as of yet). My main concern is cost of these programs. Essentially all will be around the same cost -- 90k- 100k in loans (I am LA based so for all out of state programs I am factoring in moving and cost of living). Part of me wants to accept the idea that I will have this much debt and the other wants to run away lol. What are your thoughts on racking up this much debt with any of these programs?

I was given the opportunity to participate in Emory's REAL Program! Super excited, but have a lot of questions. Is this something that can double as a practicum? Does anyone know how many hours/week the commitment is? Thanks very much.

I'm stressed out about loans too. But I don't think you'll have to take out that much money!! There is still a ton of time left for schools to hand out aid (some don't even BEGIN until March). You can look into in-state tuition (from gaining residency after the first year) at public schools like University of Michigan. Also, my sister went to grad school and her second year she was offered an RA position that covered tuition so that was 50% off the price she originally thought. IDK what your career goals are but for public service, there are loan forgiveness programs as well.

Also, (sorry if you already have seen this info) but I've seen a lot of places like here for example, that the recommended loan amount should not exceed your first year income after graduating (which I calculated by looking at the average starting salary of different programs). So maybe looking into what programs have the highest average starting salary (assuming all cost around the same) is a good start for finding the best deal for you.

Best of luck!

Chk Harvard mission.. and how do you fit into it!!
Moreover, they look for leaders/would be leaders who will take advantage of their platform. I know, many low profile students were accepted in the past.

^^ similar question but for unc -- i've only been to NC once for about a week and split it between chapel hill and asheville. is there anyone that goes to unc that can speak to the environment/housing situation (best time to look), financial aid .. and really anything else!

I went to UNC for undergrad (and will be going back for my MPH/RD!!) I loved Chapel Hill. It's safe, and the epitome of a college town. A lot of grad students choose to live in the next town over, Carrboro, because it's cheaper. A lot of undergrads sign leases fall semester to go off campus, but I am sure that grad students will be looking for roommates and such since we have until April 15th to commit. There is a pretty popular facebook page to join where you can look for roommates. Rent can be pretty cheap (ie as low as $500/month if you live with roommates) but can get expensive as you get closer to campus and/or live by yourself. A lot of people rent houses too instead of apartments.
There is a great bus system (which is free!!!) that runs throughout Chapel Hill and Carrboro, this honestly saved me so much money my senior year when I lived off campus. There is also Triangle Transit which is inexpensive which runs throughout Durham, CH and Raleigh. Parking on campus is pretty annoying/expensive. The campus is pretty large, but Gillings is in such a great location (lots of bus routes run by it, and it is surrounded by the other Medical buildings, and a great library).

Feel free to message me if you have any more specific questions!

I feel you on that. Got into Emory BSHE too and also have a really hard decision to make. Cause it's EMORY and and can't beat its connection with the CDC. Also helps that one of the certificates Emory offers is Genetic and Molecular Epidemiology. But on the other hand, I've been accepted into other schools for EPI and I had my heart set on epi going into the application process.

But I'm thinking about going to Visit Emory. Hopefully that helps me with my decision. But like you still no word on $$ so maybe that might sway my decision.

I’m also planning on going to Visit Emory. I have a LOT of questions and hopefully once I get them answered I can make my decision. Good luck and congrats!!

Has anyone been able to get any external scholarships? I feel like all the search engines out there are catered to undergrads and I really haven't found many graduate specific ones besides sweepstakes

its been pretty painful for me as well

Connections are almost everything. Atlanta is the capital of Public Health. With Emory's connections to the CDC and many well-known public health organizations, you have it made. You have the entire school to back you up. Plus, as an Emory Student, you can always pick up a certificate in Epi if you so choose. As an Emory student, you can take any courses offered on their campus, free of charge, because your tuition is a flat fee (one of the admission directors revealed this info to me, which might not be publicly known). It is a good deal.

I will be there April 6th too. Looking forward to meeting you!

For everyone interested in Emory's connections to the CDC, is that more valuable for Epi folks or does it apply across the board? I'm trying to choose between HPM at Emory (pending aid) and UNC (21K merit scholarship), so I'd be grateful for any input. My interests are broadly in the social determinants of health outcomes and access but I'm pretty new to public health so I'm largely just looking to see what's out there.

Does anyone know if the Yale Horstmann scholarship is merit-based or need-based? Thank you in advance!

When did you hear about UNC aid? and how did they let you know?

I just called and they said that I "should hear in a few weeks".. when I asked if I would know by the end of march they said that they will try.. so it wasn't very helpful. I submitted on 11/04

Browsing last year's forum, this happened last year too. If this keeps up I'll have committed to a school by the time they give me a decision...

Just received a $200 travel stipend from Tulane! Luckily their admitted students weekend is over my spring break so now I am seriously considering visiting!!
