MPH Fall 2014: Applied, Accepted, Waitlisted, Rejected!

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Hello Friends, I got into Emory MPH Global Health (submitted 12/20 selected on 1/30) , Tulane Heath systems and Policy (submitted 12/22 selected 1/21) .. Waiting for Harvard and Berkeley Health Policy.

Congrats! Was the acceptance sent via Email?

I got an initial email from the School of Public Health saying that they had recommended my admission to the Graduate Division. And then later that day, I received an email from the online system telling me that my status had been updated. But I had to log in to the system to find out about my acceptance!
Good luck!

Thanks for getting back to me! The waiting game is killing me...I'm hitting refresh every 10 minutes. Congrats again on your acceptance!!

No problem! What concentration did you apply to?

I also applied to Infectious Diseases. My GPA was a 3.5 (not too impressive), my quant GRE score was pitiful, and I don't have much public health experience. I was a public health major as an undergrad, but spent five years after graduation working in education. I was a data analyst for a school district, so I do have data manipulation experience. I actually left education with the intention of applying to veterinary school, but I realized that my interest in animal medicine was really a part of a deeper interest in infectious diseases. I know I'm reaching with Berkeley, but still going to hope 🙂.

Got into Hopkins MSPH International Health - Health Systems today, had submitted 12/9

Just curious as to what you got on the GRE if you got in to U of M??

Hey everyone. I read these posts all the time and decided I'd post my credentials and hopefully get some feedback. I am applying right out of undergrad.

3.82 GPA at my university, but a total GPA of 3.78 as calculated by SOPHAS due to summer classes taken at community college
3.94 major (health administration) GPA
GRE is 151Q 150 V 4.0 AW
, pretty low I know
I have research experience with health admin professor, an internship at a hospital, volunteer experience at a hospice house, worked as a student assistant in the health sciences department, ACHE student member, and worked various other non-healthcare related jobs through school
LORs from two from health admin faculty members and one from a hospital CEO.

I applied to Iowa (MHA), UMich (MHSA), Ohio State (MHA), St.Louis (MHA), and UMinn (MHA). Do you think I have a chance to get in to any of the programs, particuarly Michigan (my clear cut top choice)?

Undergrad School: San Diego State University
Undergrad GPA: 3.31; CC-3.64
Major/Minor: Kinesiology
GRE
(including date taken) or Other Test (if applicable): V-147, Q-145, W-3.5 🙁 (I didn't prepare for it so it sucks)
Experience/Research (please, be brief): Medical Assistant Certified/Work Experience, Hospice and Palliative Care experience, certified administrator but worked as an administrative assistant for elderly care facility (2 years), 1000+ hours of hospital/physical therapy aide hands on experience, facilitator/counselor for a company doing case management for disabled adults, bilingual, medical aide/supervisor for LGBT pride festival, translator/educator for a community health clinic, lived abroad for 9 years in Southeast/East Asia and South America, student representative for a medical club for the college of sciences student council, research on effects of stride lengths on oxygen consumption (undergrad), taken some public health classes (epi, health foundations, hiv/aids).

I applied to SDSU, CSU San Marcos, and was going to apply to one school in Canada but was way behind on my letter of intent so I let it go. I didn't consider applying anywhere else because my stats are low in the test and GPA department as well as $$$!

Has anyone heard from University of Minnesota? If so, when did you apply and what is your track or concentration?

I heard back from Minnesota on January 17th for the MPH: Public Health Administration & Policy program. Minnesota confirmed my application was complete on 12/1/13.

I called, too and was told mine was under review. She said that the decision should be uploaded before the end of next week (but to call back in another week if it wasn't uploaded). If it was submitted by the priority deadline, I don't think they wait to compare it to the ones with Jan 31st deadline.

Any word yet from JHU? Mine was submitted for review on 12/4 and my status still just says submitted.

Just received an acceptance from UC Berkeley on 1/30 into Infectious Disease and Vaccinology! Anyone else?
I haven't heard anything yet. I applied to the MPH Epi/Biostats program. When did SOPHAS send your application?

I heard back from UoM 12/27 for the Community Health Promotion Track. SOPHAS sent 11/20, completed app sent for departmental review 12/3.

I submitted for the 11-month MPH program. I think they are reviewed by different committees.

Mine was sent for review 12/8 (for the 11 month MPH) and the lady said it's with the committee now and that I should hear back towards the end of this week so hang in there! Yours should come around the same time, I would think.

Mehhh, I'm getting antsy. One of my recommenders was late with her letter so that my completed app wasn't sent for departmental review until 12/6, but I still haven't heard anything back yet. CHP track, too. Thanks for the feedback, both of you!

I applied to the same program and haven't heard anything yet. Worried since other people are getting phone calls and emails from Cal.

I've definitely stalked way too many of the past threads, but Epi/Biostats seems to be one of the later decisions released (I'm in the same boat waiting...aka slowly going crazy..as you guys!).

SOPHAS E-Submitted: 1/27
SOPHAS Verified: 2/3

I believe their Epi/Biostats program gets the most applications, so I wouldn't stress if you haven't heard back. Last year, My friend applied to Epi/Biostats and didn't hear back till early March! SOPHAS sent my app on 12/19. (I procrastinated a little too much haha) Good luck though!

I think you stand a really good shot, course my opinion isn't worth much sadly. I had a 3.37 GPA (real low unfortunately) and I had a 157 V and 164 Q (so maybe that's what helped me?). I also think my essay was definitely one of my better ones. I'm currently a senior so I haven't taken time off either. Good luck though! 🙂

Me too! Got into UC Berkeley Infectious Disease and Vaccinology. Congrats!

That's wonderful! Is it your top choice or are you waiting to hear back from others? I only applied to UC Berkeley and UCLA, and no news from LA yet.

So looks like people are finally hearing back from all of their schools, I am in the same boat.

Accepted: Pitt MPH, UMN MPH Epi, Emory MPH Epi and Yale MPH Epi
Waitlisted: Pitt PhD

Its going to be a tough decision! I would love to hear how people are going to compare the schools to make their choice. Also I was wondering if people will be attending the admitted students days?

Wow congrats!!
When was your Yale app complete and when did you hear back? The wait is killing me!

My app was complete December 12th and I got my acceptance January 9th. Since then I have received an email from a Professor and a current student reaching out to me and offering to answer any questions which I though was very nice.

Good luck! I hope you hear soon!

Does anyone know if Tulane has an admitted students day?

No problem!! Emory is definitely one of my top choices now after looking through their programs and opportunities they offer.
Same, I'm just super worried about the financial aspect...as is everyone else I'm sure haha. Can't wait to visit and learn a bit more, hopefully they decide to be a bit more generous with scholarships this year 😛.

I've heard from my boyfriend and his friends (all of whom are at Emory and study in Epi, HPM, Enviro Health, etc) that scholarships are few and far between. Mostly everyone who applies early enough gets the REAL award for $4,000 annually, and some people get lucky with a little more, but the consensus seems to be that Grad Plus loans are the name of the game.
A little depressing, but I guess you have to spend money to make it...🙁

And I thought BU's 15K scholarship was little....

Potential classmate here! Got into IDM PEL. Have you visited yet or are you planning on going to admitted students day?

I'm considering going to visiting day, depends on whether or not I can get a few days off from work. I haven't visited the campus at all yet, but my old roommate is from the area and she's been telling me about where to live and all that.

And I thought BU's 15K scholarship was little....
You're telling me. I know there are definitely other scholarships you can get, but I think there's such a limited amount that only REALLY qualified students get them. Emory hasn't announced scholarship decisions yet, but I'm not holding my breath. If an Epi degree didn't have high-ish salary potentials, there's no way I'd be shelling out the money to go to Emory. However, it's pretty much the only avenue to do what I want with my life. sigh.

Side note - does anyone know when Emory gives information on scholarship decisions?

I too am waiting for Colorado. 🙂 Nothin' yet, except confirmation they received my application 1/21.

I'm waiting as well! Got an email about a week ago for the scholarship application but that's all I've heard so far.

I have heard from PITT MS epi, GWU mph epi, BU mph epi, Icahn School of Med mph epi, and Emory MPH EPi. All accepted. Visiting Brown for Recruitment day (Interview day) next week. Waiting to hear from UCLA, Columbia, Colorado, UMass and Brown.

Though I don't currently work in PH, I am a New pt and Surgical coordinator at UCSF and have conducted PH research in the past.

Recent 2013 Molec Bio Grad from Occidental College in LA.
GRE 162 Q 156 V 4.0 W
Undergrad GPA was 2.78 because I played college Football for 3 years before I got hurt and decided I wanted to go to grad school.

hey! i went to oxy too. graduated in 2012. congrats on all the acceptances that's awesome! what's your top choice?

Lol i'm getting slaughtered in admissions: Denied from UPenn

Just curious as to what you got on the GRE if you got in to U of M??

Well my GREs are from 2008 so with the old scoring my V is in 70% range and Q in 29% range (!) luckily, maybe UMich's HBHE does not weigh heavily on math skills. I'm guessing my grades and previous Master's degree helped me significantly.
