MPH Fall 2014: Applied, Accepted, Waitlisted, Rejected!

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I don't even know how to put my feelings into words but.... I was accepted to Yale!!!!! This is my #1 and with my stats I thought it might be a reach for me. Grades and GRE aren't everything! I put so much thought and time into my SOP and I really feel like my goals align with those of Yale.

Waiting on two more schools: Michigan (interview in March) and Columbia but at this point I am extremely content!

Wow, congrats to you as well! Did you hear back just now?

Yeah, I applied in early November so I am pulling my hair out. Also waiting on Columbia and the University of Michigan.
I also applied in early November! But I called after I also got the "2-3 week" answer by phone and it had been 5 weeks and I was informed that each department has their own admissions committee, which calmed me down. I applied to Health Policy as my first choice and I know there hasn't been much action about that on here at all so I've been stressing less. What department did you apply to?

Just saw your acceptance, congrats!! Now you have me on edge again! Ahh

Health Policy. Trust me I was on edge too but it was worth the wait!

Now I have to decide...!!

Same here. I think the program is heavily geared towards Med students and dual degree students...so it makes sense..oh well it is what it is....

Do you know anything else about their program? I've been able to find exactly nothing talking about UPenn on here.

Is anyone else between Emory and Hopkins? I guess Colorado is in the mix too, granted they give me a fellowship, but I'm not counting on it!

Hey there!

Emory and Hopkins are two schools I have acceptance from so far! I got into the HMP track at Emory and the MPH/MBA at Hopkins. While Im inclined towards Hopkins for the brand name, I'm assuming Atlanta is a better place to live in right? (I'm an international applicant btw)

How are you deciding between the two places?

Well I know its a recent program, very small, about 20 students per class I think. Most of them are part time students and work full time. They give priority to Penn Med students and dual degree students. They don't do any career fairs, they combine through GW (I think ), so you would have to travel to DC for the fair (which isn't all that bad.) but overall, it doesn't seem like a lot of networking opportunities, so you probably would do a lot of the leg work for practicums, jobs etc and rely mostly on the Penn Name....So in all I think it wouldn't have been a good fit for me anyway.

Congrats everyone on Harvard!!

For those who applied/accepted to Harvard HPM SM2, I'm trying to get an idea of how much post-college work experience the average student has. Are there mostly straight from undergrads or do most have a decent amount of work experience (3+years)? Also, any idea how large the cohort is for SM2 HPM specifically?

I will have 3 yrs by the time I enroll- and it looks like there are about 10 students in SM2 program (based on the website and who they have listed as current students- but I'm not positive on this)

Hopefully you get off the waitlist! If it helps, I'm going to reject my offer (going to UC Berkeley most likely), hopefully it goes to you! You said you were from california, just wondering why you didn't consider Berkeley and UCLA (in-state tuition!) MPH programs?

Is UC Berkeley decision out? Thanks

Whoah...if all the students are in their "current students" section. Looks like 9 total..meaning only 4-5 per cohort. On top of that, further breakdown between policy vs management vs research. I think there is such a thing as too small...

Yes I got in Feb 5th to HPM. Might vary by dept
Congrats!!! and thanks...
I applied MPH epi/bio in UCB...it's nerve wrecking waiting phase we all have to go through...
Will graduate from UCB May 2014 MCB....got accepted at Columbia,UPENN,Emory,Dartmouth, Yale, UC Irvine....waiting for UCB and UCLA....
My ultimate choice is UCB...

FINALLLY heard back from JHSPH-MHA🙂
They are "slightly behind in our admissions process" direct quote from the email. Have a Skype or phone call with them next week. I don't know if its an interview per se because thats not what they wrote in the email. I'm already decided to go to Yale-HCM but my brother said he'd buy me a new iPhone if I got in :soexcited:! So hopefully I have a new phone in my future lol

p.s.: congrats to all the Harvard acceptances!! But we are now supposed to be enemies YALE>>Harvard lol :poke:

This data is from 2012 but it looks like they accept 260 into the SM program. They don't differentiate between 1 & 2 however. http://www.hsph.harvard.edu/admissions/2012-hsph-statistics/

As a reminder, Yale's financial aid application (FASFA and a seperate application that can be found on the site) is due March 1st whether you have been admitted yet or not. So don't forget, guys!!!

Yes I saw this. That includes all 3 SM degrees (42.5, 60, and 80 credits) as well as all ~10 concentrations. I was asking for particularly the size of the HPM SM2 cohort, I guess it is extremely tiny according to their current students section...

Wow impressive! Congratulations!

Hey everyone,

So I heard back from NYU and I was wait listed for fall 2014...has this happened to anyone else? This hasn't happened to me before but I am curious if there's any way I can improve my chances of being admitted while on the wait list? Thanks

Hey y'all, been a long time lurker and have decided to finally add my stats:

Undergrad School: Emory University
Undergrad GPA: approx. 3.2 (not stellar, I know)
Major/Minor: Biology/Environmental Studies
GRE (including date taken) or Other Test (if applicable): Q-156, V-161, AW- 5.0
Experience/Research (please, be brief): honestly not that much, currently work at an infectious disease physician office and taught HS biology for a few months

Applied: WAY too many to list (think around 12 schools) I was terribly afraid of not getting into anywhere so I went overboard - finished my SOPHAS app around the first week of January 2014
Accepted: SUNY Buffalo, SUNY Albany, Emory, Tulane, GWU, U Minn, Drexel, & UAB (all EPI)
Rejected: Yale, U Pitt (all EPI) 🙁
Waitlisted: n/a

And quick question: Anybody going to Visit Emory this March? I don't know if I should considering I'm an alum but the public health school is so stellar (and I am not going to lie, I also want to visit the CDC which I think is part of the visit...🙄). ALSO does anyone have any insights on U Minn? I have done a bit of research but would love to hear from people who have visited, etc. 🙂

Side note also but congrats to everyone on all of your acceptances!!!!!!! (Is it weird to think that we're the future of public health?)

That's awesome! Cool to see fellow Ducks venturing out into the public health world!! What schools did you apply to? Best of luck to you as well in the application cycle and into the field! 🙂

If I have not received an interview request from Columbia is this a bad sign? Do you think they interviewed all accepted students? Thanks!

I also applied to the MPH in Health Policy and Management at Columbia. It looks like they don't interview all applicants - I received an acceptance letter (by email) on Feb 20 without having been interviewed. Good luck!

Just got my acceptance via email to columbia!

Department of Epidemiology MPH program with a certificate in Public Health & Humanitarian Assistance

Hey Irikahsa,
When/How did you find out about your merit award from Columbia? I was accepted but haven't heard anything regarding financial assistance. When did you submit your financial aid documents? I received a link to a survey to fill out to see if I am qualified for any financial assistance, but I only received that link once I was accepted.

Has anybody accepted to Columbia been issued a Columbia Student ID yet?

Please lmk. Thanks!

I would think that only happens if we decide to accept the offer, no? I did get the OrgSync online system username/password though!
