MPH Fall 2014: Applied, Accepted, Waitlisted, Rejected!

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Finally decided to create an account after a long time lurking...:cat:

Undergrad School: Cal state northridge

Applied: SFSU, CSUFullerton, CSU Long Beach
Rejected: SFSU ( no surprise, had a strict 3.0 requirement and a 2 year experience requirement that I barely met)
Accepted:
Waiting: CSUF and CSULB... Hoping for Fullerton because of lower gpa req... But because of first rejection yesterday, I'm starting to sweat bullets:nailbiting:

I think you will be fine for both universities. I currently attend CSULB (I'm a Health Science major) and the MPH program is not that difficult to get into at the university. Have you poken to anyone at both schools? Also, CSUF doesn't require gre scores so I really think you will be ok! 🙂

Good luck!

Oops. forgot to update... Accepted into University of Arizona MPH - MCH program last week!

Just waiting on USC now - called today for an update and found out they aren't even reviewing til the MID/END of April. Decisions won't be out til June! That's insaaaaanely annoying considering priority apps for scholarships were due in early December. Wah! Unfair when other schools want decisions by April/May!

Deciding between Arizona, SDSU, and Claremont - kinda learning towards Arizona just to live in another state for 2 years, change it up! They also offer a chance for in-state tuition through the WRGP - Western Regional Graduate Program. Look into it if you're trying to go out of state. You could qualify!

Oh, decisions. It's so hard.😱

USC will not send out acceptance/rejection letters until June :/

I emailed Joanne on Tuesday and asked when I should expect to hear - she notified me that my app was "on hold" and that as they started to hear back from the admitted students they would admit more students (if they declined the offer). She didn't offer any timeline but I've heard in the past the admitted students had a decision deadline earlier than April 15 due to the waitlist - not sure if that's the case this year. So - not having heard yet is a good thing since you weren't in the first round of rejections! I would email Joanne if you want to confirm 🙂 Good luck!!
Okay, thanks! Hopefully a few people turn it down! Good luck!

I can't decide between Boston or Wash U!! Finances are playing a big factor in my decision, but I don't know if paying more at Boston is worth it. Boston is my top choice and Wash U is my second choice, but I wish I could visit and get a feel of the program/department.

Or wait for other schools? Cos If I accept the offer I have to start the documentation right away to fulfill the formalities on time..

N what r my chances for Georgia State Uni n Texas??

And can anyone also suggest me nice program in Health policy and Management which I can still apply to…

Columbia acceptees: if we're applying for financial aid and complete the FAFSA, do we automatically get considered for all the Institutional Fellowships and Scholarships?
For EPI folks, does anybody know about chances of getting the U.S. Public Health Traineeship Award? It says here
http://publichealth.columbia.edu/apply/financial-aid/scholarships-fellowships
That due to budget cuts it wasn't offered last year, but any news of this year?

I'm very interested in vector borne diseases, too! Who have you looked into working with at JHSPH? I know they are very strong in HIV/TB, but do they have a lot of people doing vector borne diseases/non-HIV/TB work?

I wonder how JHSPH compares to Emory in terms of career opportunities- it seems like everyone at Emory works at the CDC during grad school. Perhaps JHSPH students work at NIH and places like that? They definitely don't market that aspect the same way Emory does.

Yale is a really good research match for me too since all the Epi is focused on ID.

GW and Emory are both great, congrats! Are you leaning towards one or the other? Are you visiting/have you? I am going to admitted student days the next 3 weeks- Emory 3/21, JHSPH 3/28, and Yale 4/4. Ready for this waiting/decision process to be over!

Awesome! Yeah, they have the Malaria Research Institute http://malaria.jhsph.edu/research/ . Some of the researchers involved with that also work on dengue and some other vector borne diseases. I ended up applying to the MMI ScM program instead of epi ID because all of the faculty I'd like to work with are in the MMI department.

I'm not sure about the career opportunities at JHSPH for epi - I'm sure there are connections with the NIH but Emory definitely has that strong emphasis on the CDC. I think it depends on where you'd like to work once you graduate. If your dream job is at the CDC then maybe Emory would be better, though I'm sure JHSPH grads have no trouble getting those positions.

I just visited GW yesterday. I liked it but it didn't blow me away so we'll see how Emory is. I live in MI so I'll probably visit U of M too before I totally rule it out ... basically, no I still don't know where I'll go hahah such a tough choice! I'll be at Visit Emory too!

Did anyone apply to the MS in Public Health Microbiology and Emerging Infectious Diseases at GWU? How long did it take to hear back? My application was sent out over a month ago and I just got an email this week saying it's complete...

Hey! SOPHAS mailed my app 12/5 and I was accepted 02/10. Where else did you apply?

Try University of South Florida. USF is a good school and quite easy to get in.

Hey guys, for those of you accepting NYU for this fall I started a new thread and hopefully we can help each other! 🙂

Thanks for the link! I found one epi professor in that group to email so that was very helpful!

I go to U of M undergrad so if you have any questions about the school/town I may be able to answer them!

I'm so excited for Visit Emory! I can't wait to see the school, proximity to the CDC, classes, and for some warm weather! I hope the visits are really helpful in figuring out which school is right. I also wish we would get financial packages already, although they will probably be nothing more than loans. Keep me posted on your decision process, and maybe see you this weekend in ATL!

Hey! SOPHAS mailed my app 12/5 and I was accepted 02/10. Where else did you apply?

Hey! I guess I have some waiting to do then. My apps were mailed 2/6. I applied to Columbia, Emory, UW, BU, UIC, UT, Drexel and Mt. Sinai. I've been accepted to Columbia, BU, Drexel, and Mt. Sinai. Wait listed at Emory and rejected from UT and UW (I'm a UW student, so not surprised).

Hey Thanks UB27.. Yes definitely i will look at the program at USF n will apply... nways any idea abt Health management and policy program at North Texas... i got accepted there...n in order to secure the admission i have to start formalities right away to confirm them by 15 april..

But m v much interested in UT & GSU,... UT has good ranking n quite cheap plus have my family there... but their results r expected in early may or later so .. not quite sure… either wait for their decision or accept the UNT offer... ... also with my credential .. What do u think my chances r in UT & GSU...

ME! They are taking their precious time and I'm starting to get annoyed.
When exactly did they say the cut off was for notifying people about admissions? I thought it was march 15? Maybe I just made that date up...

Oh, that makes me feel a bit better haha. No I have not spoken to anyone, I'm venturing on my own, so I hope that will be ok. You know anyone who got in to csulb mph with a gpa as crappy as mine lol?

Yes and it's not crappy at all. I know multiple people who have gotten in with 3.0-3.2 they had leadership experience like you and work experience. My former professor is one of the people who makes the decision of who gets into the program. You'll be fine. Call Toni the MPH Graduate coordinator and tell her Banke referred you and told you great things about the university😉.

How difficult is it to get into Tulane? If anyone could shed some light, I'd deeply appreciate it.

Hmm...Berkeley Visit day is today. I wasn't able to go so she forwarded me the materials. They already have an acceptance rate calculated for each concentration...18% for HPM! Cal's program is probably one of, if not the most competitive of MPH programs.

I'm guessing you are in the Rotaract Club! Me too 🙂 I'm the President of the club at my university. Congrats on your acceptances!

Thanks Pdesai8! What was the rate for infectious diseases? I guess it's time that I call for my rejection 🙁:dead:

I'm not sure actually, I just got the general MPH program packet and the HPM specific one. That is weird that they are taking so long to get back to you, I bet it's super nerve-recking 🙁

Ohhh was the admin day just for your program not all admits? 18% is craaaaaazzzzyyyyyy. Congrats on your acceptance!

It's just kind of an emotional roller coaster! One minute I feel confident that they will get back to me and the next I think they just forgot about me. I just emailed the program coordinator to check about the deadline for sending out notifications. If she gets back to me, I'll post it here.

No, it was for all admits but then I think the second half of the day they broke up based on their concentrations. I just requested the materials handed out for the HPM break-out session. But if you look at the admit stats on their SPH website, the infectious disease concentration is i think a lot higher than HPM. I'm not sure why they wouldn't let everyone know before Admit Day. Sorry, that sounds so frustrating! I hope you have some great back-up options though 🙂

Looks like I'll be doing the NYU Wagner MPA instead of the NYU MPH, got significant $$$ from MPA today.....and got practically nothing from the MPH......

Considering Epi at Emory! But like most people, trying to figure out how to make up for the costs.

Congrats! What type of epi do you want to study? Where else are you considering? At this point it's a 3 way tie for me and I have no idea how I will make a decision by April 15th!

The cost is so scary. I also didn't realize essentially all financial aid would be loans!

Update: Accepted at UC Denver for the Health Systems, Management, & Policy!
I don't know how I'm going to choose now! wahhhhh!
Anyone else learning towards Colorado?

Can I ask what you meant by "I'm a UW student, so not surprised"?
And to what types of programs did you apply?

I believe he/she was saying that he/she is a student at the University of Washington.

Well of course, I understood that they were a student at UW. What I'm asking is why he/she is saying that they are not surprised that they were rejected because they are a student there. I'm wondering why being a student already led to the rejection

It's not just with UW, though graduate programs tend to favor students who did not go to their institution at the undergraduate level. I'm not saying that this is what happened in this particular case or that it's apparent in every situation, however it is a trend that continues to puzzle applicants. I hope this helps!

The idv coordinator got back to me that all decisions have been made including rejections and that we should hear soon.

I'm annoyed that she couldn't just tell me my decision but is telling me to wait.

The WRGP is what is making me lean more and more towards accepting at UC Denver! Such a great deal! In-state tuition and mountains... hard to pass up. Anyone else accepting at UC Denver or going to admitted students day?
I just got accepted to the same program today! I'm super interested in going there, but I'm from CA.. so idk if a $250 flight is worth it for admitted students day. waaah. Did you find any information about the WRGP or how to apply? I just found this: http://wrgp.wiche.edu/wrgp_profile.jsp?profid=157&instid=143&progid=1159 I think ill call later this week

Yup, this is what I meant! I've heard this from multiple sources, including an instructor for a grad school prep class. I think this is because graduate programs want to show the diversity of students they can attract. I had hoped to counter this by having my professor, who is on the MPH admissions committee, write me a letter of recommendation, but it didn't work.

Has anyone else not heard from Columbia's HPM or NYU's Community and International Health Programs? I'm super frustrated at this point.

Oh yay! Congratulations! I'm not going to be able to make it out there for Admitted Students Day but I am going to accept because Colorado is just a better fit for me coming from Oregon. They sent me a form to fill out about a week after I got acceptance. Let me know what you decide... if you deciding on Colorado, let's chat some more! 🙂

You should email NYU. They're really nice about those kinds of things. I did and they responded back quickly.

What I was told by my old biochem professor was that it is also *slightly* looked down upon to continue your education at the same institution. Obviously, take this with a grain of salt, but she used the term "academic incest". When she was applying for her PhD programs, advisors, future employers, etc. wanted to see that you attended different schools and were able to collaborate and gain new perspective from being around different people.

yup!! My current PI also told me the same thing when it comes down to choosing med students and/or residents. They want intellectual diversity.

Got into Johns Hopkins MPH Epidemiology. So so amazing. But still being nervous to wait for funding cuz Im international and I won a fellowship which asks the school who accept me to give me tuition. Does anyone know it is easy to get tuition waiver or scholarship at JHU? Really hope I can joint the school
