MPH Fall 2015: Applied, Accepted, Waitlisted, Rejected!

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Been lurking for a while now anxious to hear back from schools! :-/ Here are my stats 🙂 Has anyone heard from SDSU yet?

Undergrad School: University of California, Santa Barbara
Undergrad GPA: 3.84
Major/Minor: Global Studies with an emphasis in the Middle East
GRE: 159 V, 148 Q, 4 AW taken 11/2014
Experience/Research (please, be brief): I do legal research for a software company that serves the alcohol beverage industry. Before that I dabbled in various administrative positions. No formal medical positions, but excited to start!

Applied: Colorado University at Denver, San Diego State, Dartmouth, NYU, St. George University
Accepted:
Rejected:
Waitlisted:

CU, SD, and NYU have all responded that my application is in review...cross your fingers for me! Best of luck everyone!

Hey, anyone know when we would hear about waitlists? Is there a chance that Emory or BU will get back to me before April 15? Lol. I'm not particularly waiting to hear back from them (happy w my acceptances) but I will be out of the country from April 5-17 and need to pay an enrollment deposit for UMich by the 15th if I won't be hearing back D:

Really that's so interesting! Are you a domestic or international student ?

&& congrats 🙂
I'm a domestic student, and I heard back on Feb. 25. I was so surprised (after not receiving an interview) that I called to confirm. I do have five years of work experience in public health and pretty clearly articulated career goals tied to research strengths at UMich.

I'm from upstate NY and even I don't think I could get used to the culture of the south. I would agree with what people are telling you.
I was born and raised in a southern state (although it's only southern by location rather than what you would consider a typical "southern" state). I moved to Georgia roughly half a decade ago and even I am still not used to the culture. The south has a very defined culture that some people love, but many others hate. However, I will say that Atlanta has a bit more of a liberal culture than most of the south. It's still a very southern city, but it tends to be more accepting of differences than most of the south.

It can really be at any time depending on when people make their decisions. Here is the first page from gradcafe that shows people accepted off the waitlist, so it'll show the extremes, and then you can continue browsing through the larger page numbers.

If you're not used to random people saying hi to you or holding open doors or saying thank you very often to strangers, then the South may be a huge culture shock for you. And no one seems like they're in a rush to get anywhere, which is good if you're more laid-back, but horrible for driving and walking to places. My college roommate was originally from PA, and those were the main things she would "complain" about. You can definitely see a difference in attitude. I remember visiting NYC once and the first thing that happened to me when I got off a subway line was a man had stepped on MY luggage strap and starting cursing me out about it, and I was just shocked that someone could be rude to a complete stranger especially when he was the one that stepped on my stuff. Chapel Hill is a very liberal city and college town, but like 30 minutes down the highway there used to be a billboard that said "Dethrone Obama". Atlanta itself is very diverse in population and food (very important factor for me) and more liberal than the rest of the state of GA, which is why I really like it as a city. It has all the things I love about the south and all the things I love about being in a big city, and it can be pretty cheap!

Thank you, I am kicking myself for not applying to Emory.

I actually applied to UAB, because I heard it's a wonderful program, but I'm not that impressed.

As far as holding doors and such, no, I've lived in Montana and various small towns. I love that sort of thing. What I cannot handle is hearing racial slurs or derogatory terms for anyone used in front of me.

I lack the ability to let such a thing slide. It sounds like that's much less of an issue in Atlanta.

I read they're still accepting applications if they have space. I think I'm just going to apply and see.

Does anyone have any tips on preparing for an interview/case study for health management and policy programs? I have my UMich one coming up!

Just got a $24,000 scholarship to Tufts o___o was not expecting that. Throws a wrench in my plans since I was going to go to UTSPH due to lower cost. Ahhhh!

How did you find out about your Tufts Scholarship?

You have to do a case study? Odd... But I've been practicing them since I've been interviewing with healthcare consulting firms recently

I used the Victor Cheng videos, Ace The Case for brief background and case samples (~50). Frameworks are a great guide.

Also the most important thing is to find someone who has practiced cases in order to give you feedback and guide you. It's all about practice to build your skill.

thanks. i heard it's not that intense, and you do it with a group. the interview with the faculty is also informal. i just want some question examples so i can brainstorm!

Yes, I've heard its like a job interview but I didn't realize case studies were involved! Ace The Case has a lot of sample questions, its $14.00 for an e-book. Also if you don't want to buy the book, and want just a few examples go to the McKinsey, Oliver Wyman, Accenture, BCG, PwC, Huron, etc... websites they have free samples online of business case studies.

If you have a friend to practice with, thats your best shot! Good luck 🙂

If that's something you're concerned about, it's really not much of an issue in Atlanta (can't say the same if you go much further outside of the city). For the most part, Atlanta has a relatively educated population and is a very culturally diverse city. It would probably surprise you how open people are here. You'll still find a lot of the "southern hospitality" though.

I'm originally from DC and I love Atlanta and the south! It's not perfect, but it's definitely not that deep south feel you get when you visit parts of Alabama or Mississippi. It's a good mix of north and south since a lot of the people there are transplants. My friend did visit this weekend and we both found out that you can't get alcohol before 12:30pm on Sundays due to city law...I guess those little things kind of remind you that Atlanta is in the south!

Got my letter of admission from them on Feb. 27 🙂 (the email they sent telling me to check the website went to spam, so I only saw the letter when I decided to spontaneously check the website two days later--imagine my shock! 🙂 )

I knew something was weird...I checked my decision online without receiving an email 2 weeks ago. I just checked my spam folder and there it is! lol

My Harvard portal still shows "under review"
Jesus, how much review do they need, lol
I got my Columbia decision well over a month ago.

I haven't received a decision from either of those schools yet 🙄. Hopefully we will hear something this week. We are entering into the "mid-March" time frame.

You said it... I'm starting to get discouraged :bored:

Question... @ GWU what's the closest related program to HMP? They have Public Health Management but that requires career experience (10+ years) and then Health Policy???

I really wanted a mix of both

I spent high school in rural Alabama and never heard a racial slur there. I doubt it would ever be an issue in Atlanta. Yes, it's still a "southern" city, but it's quite different from what people expect of southern US areas.

I received my acceptance letter from SDSU last week! But the weird thing is they're rushing me to make a decision by March 20th 🙁 and I'm still waiting for other schools. Have you heard of this happening before?

For those who are still waiting on a decision from Harvard, has anyone reached out to them?

I'm tired of calling them. I feel like I will know my decision in (5 x 10^4) years.

Has anyone still waiting on Columbia contacted them, since we are now in "mid-March"? I'm thinking of doing that because I'm leaving for a 3-month trip to South America in 6 days 😀

I AM!! My interview with them was about a month ago, and since then I have been accepted by Michigan and Hopkins:whistle:. Are you HMP?

I called them about a week and a half ago and the only response I got was that since I didn't hear in mid-February, I would hear in mid-March. They did not say when they considered mid-March to be, though. If you're going out of the country, I think it's completely reasonable for you to call them and explain your situation, asking if they have reached a decision on your application. I assume they have already made decisions on many applications, but simply plan to release them in a large batch.

Nope, Epi. Accepted by Harvard and Hopkins so not exactly on thorns regarding Columbia, but would still like to know where I stand with them.

I'm still waiting too! I'm going on a medical mission trip to Vietnam this Friday

Also waiting to hear from Harvard (SM2 epi). It was a long shot, but I'd like to know before I leave the country in two weeks.

If you don't mind me asking, how long did it take SDSU to get back to you after they received your application? I'm still waiting to hear back, but my SOPHAS was verified just a few weeks ago.

Wow, another day and no word from Harvard.
Ladies and Gents, I am beginning to get frustrated. :boom::wtf:
Understatement. This is really putting me on edge. It's getting to be pretty late even for them. Maybe they are doing an unofficial waitlist this year? Or maybe the weather was just so bad they got super duper backed up, moreso than any other school in Boston? Maybe they got a ton of apps this year? I'm trying not to care but I just want this process to be over so I can focus on selling my condo and going into debt.

Lol, I am already in debt, and I don't own any condo, just an unfurnished studio, lol.

Oh Harvard Harvard, wherefore art thou Hahhhhhvahhhhd

Oh overrated private school, famous ONLY by Hollywood movies and the media, why won't you put me out of my misery and tell me I'm rejected, so I can just move to New York, buy a Columbia T-shirt and sit next to the prehistoric rats on the subway on my way to school?

Oh Harvard...

so I can just move to New York, buy a Columbia T-shirt and sit next to the prehistoric rats on the subway on my way to school?

Not to worry, the rats generally keep to the tracks 🙂 Some of them occasionally get adventurous and venture onto the subway platforms late at night to check out the trash cans (but they run back to the tracks very quickly if they see you, they do not desire human company any more than we desire theirs 🙂), and in my 6 years in NYC I have yet to see one actually go *inside* the subway :angelic:

I'm thinking we should hear this Friday. They said decisions would be released through mid March and they usually release decisions on Fridays (based on past years). I'm not holding out much hope for an acceptance from them, but I'd love to know soon.

Does anyone know when Emory's Financial Aid packages go out? They received my FAFSA on Feb 6th

Also Hopkins got my completed application on 12/12 and I still haven't heard back from them. I applied to the Department of International Health. Are there other people in the same boat? I feel like 12 weeks is a long time for an admissions decision

This is what Emory says on the admitted students portal; nothing specific:
Award notifications are made via email to your official email account designated in OPUS beginning in March and continue on a rolling basis until all students have been notified. Some email programs may place these emails in a Bulk, Trash, or Quarantine folder rather than your Inbox, so you will want to ensure that [email protected] is an accepted sender.

Hopkins rejected me a couple of weeks ago and it looks like they've been slowly doling them out according to grad cafe.

Not sure if you saw the other thread but the new rankings are out
http://grad-schools.usnews.rankings...ols/top-health-schools/public-health-rankings

Emory bumped down 1, Harvard bumped up to tie with UNC, Pitt bumped down 2, UW stole Emory's spot at 6, Columbia remains at 5. Those are based on what I can remember off the top of my head. WashU still not ranked due to being a new program and not a school, blargh. Still kind of wish I would have applied to UW.
