If you're looking at Johns Hopkins then the education is well worth it but I don't believe that UMDs public health program is worth it. It's just too small at the moment. This is just my opinion (always weigh your own opinion the most lol) and I do know many people who love Baltimore to death.

Thanks! Yeah I applied to Johns Hopkins but I doubt I'll get in. Good to know about Baltimore on the off chance I do! 🙂
 
Sorry to hear that! I just went back to review your stats...I'm honestly taken back! Princeton, great GPA, and definitely competitive GRE scores.

Still, both Tulane and Michigan are AWESOME programs. Tulane is just as good as Emory in GH, and equally respected internationally.

At least that's better than a flat out rejection! And as others stated, Tulane has an excellent GH program so you have some great options open to you. Looking at your stats though, I'm actually very surprised you have two waitlists.

The only one I applied to on this list was Pitt. I talked to several people on the phone and through e-mail and visited the school. Below is my bullet pointed pro/con list:

Pros:
  • Location:
    • The city has a lot of great resources, including UPMC. Also, there are several other universities in the area and they have a reciprocal agreement with at least Carnegie Mellon where you can take classes there as part of your Pitt tuition.
    • A lot of people say they love Pittsburgh. I wasn't there for long enough to know, but it seems to be a diverse, younger population and people seem to be nicer than other areas.
    • Excellent cost of living.
  • One of the older programs with long-standing relationships both in the area and across the country; this makes for great practicum opportunities. It seems like they work hard at trying to match you up with solid opportunities in your area of concentration.
  • Staff seems student focused, helpful, and very friendly.
  • Wide array of course options and specialization opportunities for epi.
  • You can go directly from the masters to the PhD program if you choose to apply while you are there.
Cons:
  • 0 funding for masters students in epi.
  • City is cold, gray, rainy, snowy. I'm not sure where you're from, but I'm from Cincinnati, and that's the only school on my list with worse weather (and that includes Boston and Baltimore; for me "worse" incorporates amount of gray hours vs. sunshine hours).
  • Building is really old and crappy. They're going to start remodeling soon. I know this seems trivial, but if you're spending so many hours there, environment does become a factor.
My take on Pitt is that it is an excellent school and I was very excited to get in. However, given that they give no master's scholarships and WashU gave me $25k, and I got into Emory, they've been knocked off my list. If I get no scholarships, I'd rather pay full price for Emory than Pitt, and WashU has an excellent overall reputation and would be $40k less total.

I don't know much about Yale or GWU's programs because I did not apply to them. It ultimately depends what you want to do. If you want to go immediately into the field, any of those schools will work. You will get a job. Your main concern should be available internship/research opportunities in your area of interest and curbing debt. If you want to go on to further schooling (PhD, MD, etc.), you'll want to consider brand name a bit more, but all of those will still be solid.

Thank you so much for this list!!! I'm torn between Pitt and Emory (by far the two best schools I applied & got in to) and that list gives me some good perspective and things to think about and add to my own pro/con list.

Where did you find that info about going straight to PhD, and do you know how that would compare to Emory? (I'm not for sure going for my PhD but that is a big consideration of mine, and why Drexel got knocked off my list)

When I visited Pitt, the student services contact gave me that information. I also exchanged e-mails with a current student who indicated that was what she was doing. Don't quote me on this, but you may be able to save a year of tuition if you apply for the PhD during the 15/16 school year and "start" the PhD program in fall of 16. You will probably want to contact them though to get the info. They're all really nice and helpful. That was one thing that I did like over Emory. I'll PM you some contact info.

I honestly don't know about Emory and the PhD. That's a good point. I really need to write out a list of questions and see if I can get someone on the phone.

If you're choosing between Pitt and Emory and you want to work in one of those areas or with a specific contact in one of those locations, go to that school. Otherwise, just go to Emory. 🙂
 
Also, as a side note, the head of the dept recommended the "PH" degree as a compliment to the "research" degree. I.e.:
MPH and PhD
or
MS and DrPH

Otherwise you have 2 research degrees, or 2 professional degrees. She felt that would be redundant, for what it's worth. They are very similar.

That's an interesting point. I hadn't really thought about it that way before. I've been debating between pursuing either a PhD or a DrPH after my MPH and have been leaning towards the PhD. If this is widely agreed upon, it further encourages me to do so!

I think your career goals and ease of transitioning into each program should guide you. While the "PH" degrees are a little more broad, both DrPH and PhD are research oriented. People with either degree will continue on into academic, research, or health organizations for employment. The coursework is a bit different (again, more broad for the DrPH) and a bit more multidisciplinary for the research projects, and the types of conferences you'd attend would also be different, but functionally in your end career, there won't be THAT big of a difference.

However, if you're intrigued by one subject more, I think the specialization of the PhD is a little more appealing (it was to me).

I applied and got in the same week. However, they only gave me 4 weeks to send in my deposit (which fell over their holiday/xmas/winter break), so I gave up my spot when I got into Pitt and Drexel.

That's pretty much the conclusion I'm at right now. I have a pretty good idea of where I would like my career to head and what my research interests are, but I don't think I can really know for sure until I'm in my MPH. Once that is all solidified, I'm sure it will give me better direction (go broad with a DrPH or specialized with a PhD). I'm leaning towards the thought that I'll go for my PhD because my interests, should they remain the same, will likely be specialized.

Sorry...not to totally hijack your question (p.s. congrats on your awesome acceptances!) but as I'm someone who has applied to UMD's program...would you be able to share your thoughts on it? I don't know too much about it, frankly...

Wow! when did you hear? I thought they didn't start reviewing applications until January 5th

Hmm, so I called and emailed the admissions office and I didn't get a reply or an answer until I emailed the ADAP for GLEPI/EPI. She said they just got my application into the department today and hopefully I'll hear something in the next few weeks. FEW weeks???! Emory, you're killing me!

I submitted SOPHAS on 11/28 (or thereabouts), it was verified on 12/3, and then I got my acceptance email on 12/5, official letter in the mail on 12/8. So I had until Jan 8th to accept...which was...less than ideal.

What???? Another few weeks is disheartening to hear. My application was forwarded for review 5 weeks ago and the e-mail said it usually takes 3-6 weeks before a decision is reached. Oh well. I guess that puts them closer to when most of the other schools should be releasing decisions.

Did you get into the PhD program at Pitt? I was admitted there for epi. Did you find anything about funding? I am little worried, sounds like they don't have much in the way of funding there!

Aw man 🙁. Same here! My application was verified back in October so it feels like it has been forever!

Ok. I submitted SOPHAS 12/8, was verified 12/16, received a letter from Temple on 12/22 saying it would be 3-4 weeks before a decision was made, and then got an email saying the department was closed 12/24-1-5, so no decisions would be made till then. I figured I would probably here something either this week or next week. That's weird you had such a short amount of time to accept, especially over the holidays. You figure they'd give you more time then.

Since deleting this and the gradcafe threads from my bookmarks has only resulted in me typing in the urls longhand about 10 times a day, I figured I might as well give in to the addiction and join the convo 🙂

-1 year undergraduate research assistant at an anxiety disorders lab
-1.5 years office manager for a private clinical psychology practice
-2 months (as of date of MPH apps) interning in India on rural maternal and newborn health programs

Applied (SOPHAS verified 12/29): Johns Hopkins MSPH Health Systems (applied 1/5, forwarded to dept 1/15); Emory for Global Health (received 1/6, forwarded 1/8); UMichigan for International Health Epidemiology (received 1/6, accepted 1/16); Columbia for Population and Family Health (forwarded 1/8)

I do believe it is on a rolling basis...but you can log back in to the application system and track the progress of your application 🙂

From what I've seen in previous results on Grad Cafe, they are pretty later with acceptances. Feb-March.

I believe they are rolling but they don't start reviewing applications until pretty late in the game. I've been complete there since mid November and haven't heard anything yet.

I'm not sure...I know UIC's deadline is Feb 1. I submitted my SOPHAS stuff to them late November, but completed my sup application 2 weeks ago.
 
Just adding that today I got into Drexel for epi MPH with a $17,000 per year scholarship, which is apparently the max they give out. They seem to be very open for funding sources too like, grad/research/teaching assistants, compared to other schools.

So while I really want to end up in Boston or Minneapolis, Philly seems so much cheaper because of Drexel's amount of affordability, but is that worth the potentially lesser education I'd get from them compared to top programs like Minnesota?

Every time I walk by the TV in the office, CNN is saying something about "Deflate-gate" and it's making me angry that they keep taking words and adding "-gate" to them. Hopefully today's 4:30 Tom Brady thing will get them to stop.

I think where you want to end up long term also should play a role. If you want to end up in either Boston or Minneapolis long term, going to school there and finding work opportunities in that city definitely are helpful.
 
And that ends week six of not hearing back from any schools. Counting on lucky week seven to give me some answers!

Hi,
The impression I got was that UMD's program catered more towards doctors in the area who wanted an Mph to boost their resume and allow them to enter new fields of research. I worked with a few of these people and even they recommended that I search for other options bc I wanted to pursue infectious disease epi. If you are looking for injury prevention I would strongly recommend the program bc there is a lot of that kind of research through UMMC's shock trauma center. There program is also split between the two campuses, Baltimore and college Park. I believe Baltimore has the greater opportunities but compared to other schools that are discussed here often, Emory, Tulane, JHU it just doesn't compare. Also I heard from coworkers and relatives that the the Masters in nursing program (public health focus) and mph program are similar/share classes. The medical system is incredible but does have a strong push for the shock trauma center and any related public health and inner city community health work related. They also have one of the lowest acceptance rates, the lowest in one chart that I read, which is kinda odd. I asked them why during a sophas virtual fair and they gave me some vague reply and urged me to apply.
I'm not sure if any of this helps haha.
 
Phoned Yale about my application and was told something that has kinda thrown me off and I'm not sure what's going on? I'm super confused right now. But they told me I'll hear back in late February... I called my aunt who has a phd in health administration and she said what they're doing is something that is often done for multiple reasons.

So confused. Oh well. I can stop checking my email until Feb., then... I'm just hella confused because I've never seen anyone mention this on the board.

No, I applied to the MPH in Epi. And they have no funding for Master's students 🙁
