MPH Fall 2016: Applied, Accepted, Waitlisted, Rejected!

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Your stats are similar to mine, but I had higher GRE scores and far less experience. Also my main experience was in global health and I applied to epidemiology programs. You can look up my post in the Fall 2015 thread for my stats and the schools I was accepted to for comparison if it helps. In a nutshell, apply to the concentration you want, and apply smart to maximize the possibility for acceptances. Do not apply to another concentration that you think is easier and then try to switch, it will only add additional stress. I think you should be fine.
Thanks pudu! I'm fairly new to this entire forum- how do I find your 2015 thread? I tried searching but to no couldn't find anything.

Has anyone heard back from Yale? I got a confirmation from Yale that they received my application and started reviewing (but no expected notification of decision date) and today one from Columbia saying they would notify in two waves, middle of Feb and middle of March.

I can't take this waiting thing!

Yale has not begun sending decisions out yet, but I predict they will fairly soon!

Hello,

Congrats to everyone who has already been accepted. So this is probably a dumb question but I just received my OPUS login from Emory today via email and I can't figure out how we select and rank secondary and tertiary program choices. Does anyone know how we go about marking our second and third choices?

You have to email Emory with your choices as far as I know. It's what I did, they sent an email containing information about how to add choices. I believe it is the same email that contains your log in info.

"If you would like to change your departmental selections, email RSPH Admission at [email protected]."

You actually don't have to do a search, the thread is in the similar threads section below this page. I would suggest reading through as many of the posts as you can muster to get an idea of where people were accepted with their stats.

I'm still awaiting on Yale too.

Question: So I just got my grades back for this past (Fall 2015) semester and my GPA has risen from 3.75 to 3.80. I don't think the change is that big of a difference, but my family is concerned with whether sending a new transcript with new grades would make a difference (They are kind of pushy about me sending a better GPA). My original post with all my stats is on the first page of this thread for reference. Should I just leave everything as is, or send my new transcript to SOPHAS?

I had the same thought and for me it probably would have made more of a difference (3.28-->3.36) but I honestly couldn't bring myself to wait to be re-verified and then put in the back of the pile again. What I suggest is calling individual schools and asking if you can send a new transcript directly to them that can be attached to your application, GW and Columbia both said they would do that for me.

When I contacted UT-SPH about sending my final transcript, they told me that they don't accept transcripts directly--only through SOPHAS. So sending a final transcript to SOPHAS means I have to wait for verification again? D:

For those who submitted to BU, did any of you run into log-in issues with the supplemental application? They said to login using your SOPHAS username/password, which is what I did, but it keeps giving me an error message saying my UN/PW are incorrect. I logged in to SOPHAS after seeing the error message and it worked without any problems. I already emailed BU about this, but I'm wondering if anyone else has encountered the same issue...
I had the same issue back in November. I emailed them after I received an email telling me the supplemental questions had not been answered. I had to send them a screen shot and answer some questions until finally on Dec. 10th they told me it was a SOPHAS issue and they could see my answers now.

I emailed them and they said they will have a decision about 3-4 weeks after they email you to say they have received your application.

Weird. I just checked and received that e-mail from them (confirming the receipt of my application) on Nov. 17th, so even with the holiday it has been more than 3-4 weeks for me.

Yeah they told me the same thing so I just chose not to send a new one. You have to get your GPA verified again and if you applied scholarship deadline it might push you back into regular decision - I figured it wouldn't be worth it.

That is weird. Here's exactly what they told me, if it helps:
"Thanks for your email. The standard timeline for the application review process depends on when your application is verified and sent to us by SOPHAS after your application is submitted. Once we receive your application from SOPHAS, it takes about 3-4 weeks for us to review your application and notify you of a decision.Your application was verified and sent to us by SOPHAS on January 4th. Since the offices just reopened, we have started reviewing applications again, particularly those that came in over the break. Given this timeline, you should expect to hear from us in late January or early February. We will notify you via email of our decision, so please continue to check your inbox for updates."

Yale has never sent out decisions earlier than January

Had just finished my daily ritual of checking OPUS, this, and grad cafe when I got an email. So, I pull down the notification bar on my phone and see its from YSPH and have a mini heart attack, because someone just posted about getting accepted there. Turns out it was just an invite to the SOPHAS fair..... All this waiting is horrible!! Lol

Also, anyone thinking of signing up for that?

Which department?

Congrats!!
Thank you very much! It is for health policy and management. I applied to the combined MBA/MPH so this may have affected the timeline, I'm not sure. No word on the MBA yet

I went through the exact scenario -- it was made even worse because I was in the middle of a conversation with a co-worker and wasn't able to actually open the email for about 10 minutes after seeing it come up...

Same thing happened to me! I signed up just to at least chat with some of the programs who will be there that I applied to about anticipated timeline

I haven't been given any interviews which makes me nervous! Especially when I know admissions decisions for many schools are just around the corner... Are interviews for mph programs normal or do only some programs utilize interviews as a part of the admissions decision? 🙁

I wouldn't worry! From what I've seen, it's pretty unusual for MPH programs to do interviews, and if they do them, they specify it when you're applying. e.g., University of Washington highly recommends you contact faculty about the program, and they use notes from those informational interviews to build your applicant profile.

Hope this helps!

I want to say that it really depends on your school. I applied to 4 schools and none of them require interviews. I think interviews are more common for other types of health programs. For instance, they were required for my friend who applied to PA schools. Honestly, I don't think you should be worried.

Need advice!!!

I worked at a company starting in September and then submitted my applications in November. Unfortunately in December I had to leave the job (it was health related and great epi experience). I don't want to really have to explain why I only worked at a job for three months but I also really want to send in an updated CV as I just received a graduate teaching assistantship in my current grad program for the semester and I have two papers accepter for publication since submitting and a promotion with the Carter Foundation. Wondering if these are good enough reasons to send an update or if its better not to shed light on the job?

Hrm, I feel like your other accomplishments would outshine the fact that you left a job after three months? My inkling is to send an update letter.

Congrats to everyone on their acceptances today! I check this forum way too often, I feel ridiculous!

I don't know if anyone else has applied to UAB, but I got accepted today to the health behavior department. Will choose GW over UAB, but still made me happy!

Got an acceptance for UAB Epi today.

This was helpful to me too! I was weirded out that Dartmouth wanted to do an interview with me because I haven't heard anything from them in the past about interviews, etc. And then someone above said that Columbia does similar stuff? Weird! Has anyone else heard anything from Dartmouth?

I agree. Might be best to update, since those are pretty good accomplishments

*headdesk* Oh well. I figured I wasn't really competitive for scholarships anyway after seeing my SOPHAS GPA breakdown. I'll get a boost to my social science score, proof of grad level classes, and a community health class listed.
OMG YES the email about the SOPHAS virtual fair! My heart stopped when I saw the sender in my notifications, and the disappointment when I found out what it was about...

Hi everyone! I received a (weird) email from Yale today, telling me that my application is now 'complete'. Did anyone else receive this email, too? They sent me an email month ago saying that they've received my application and that they'll start reviewing soon, and not they're telling me my application is complete.. I'm confused 🙁

Anyone else apply to GWU for epi, summer semester? I received a complete email on 1/5. The semester starts on May 16th, so I'm feeling the crunch in the timeline!

I also received that email today, maybe it means they just have finished processing all of your paperwork and the application is ready to be reviewed by the admissions board?

Just heard I was accepted to UT Houston's MPACH department! My app was verified by SOPHAS on 11/23 and UTH said they got it on 12/4. I went to their open house in November and one person told me they reviews apps every Friday, just in case anyone is watching for an email from them.

Do you think its best to send an email/letter with what has changed or just send an updated CV?

So, I went on a Fijian piknic (I'm a peace corps volunteer in Fiji) yesterday at the beach with my village and I was like :headphone: "I got my toes in the water, ass in the sand, not a worry in the world ~except if I'll get into Emory/Yale~ a pineapple in my hand, life is good today" :headphone:
Lol

Today and yesterday I had really great phone interviews with a graduate student and faculty member in the Community-oriented Public Health Practice program at University of Washington! Feeling good, especially because I royally bombed an interview with someone in their Health Services department in December. Glad I'm more interested in COPHP—now just to get that application in before January 15! 🙂

In your experience, did the faculty members seem receptive to you wanting to interview? I contacted a professor twice in December with no response and am reaching out to another one this week.

Specifically for COPHP? I reached out via the program email and scheduled a time to talk with the graduate student program contact, who then put me directly in touch with a professor.

The professor I spoke to in December I contacted directly and just got lucky that she was responsive!

That's good to hear, hopefully you hear some good news soon.

My contact was also in Health Services. I reached out to the program coordinator and was told that the professor is very approachable so I'm not sure what the obstacle was in me not receiving a response.
