MPH Fall 2016: Applied, Accepted, Waitlisted, Rejected!

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Congrats! Do you mind if I ask if you heard about any funding offers from any of your programs?
Not yet, from what I know it comes in the acceptance package that they send via regular mail? If anyone can confirm this, that'd be great. I figured if I got in on a friday, it would be a few days before I find the package 🙂

Accepted to UNC-Chapel Hill for Health Behavior MPH and Tulane for Tropical Medicine MPH.
Congrats! I applied to UNC's health behavior program too. Haven't heard back yet, submitted 12/8/15. When did you submit? Might help me get a better idea of their timeline.

Accepted to USF dual concentration epidemiology / global communicable disease!

I just sent new transcripts to GW and she told me that I'm in the next pile to be considered - somehow that just makes it even more nerve wracking!

Congrats on the USF acceptance! Lol you got more info out of GW admissions than I did this morning! Do you mind me asking what department you applied to and when you applied?

Thanks! 🙂 I started by asking her if it would be possible to send a new transcript, and she told me that even though it's not "official" she'll attach it to my application. So then I had to ask if they've already looked at my application so I wouldn't pay to send a new transcript if they've already made a decision, and she was very helpful and told me that I was in the next pile to be reviewed but she would put a note to hold until my transcript arrived (which was the same day). I think I was verified Nov. 27 and I applied to the epi department!

Thanks for the insightful information. I'm kind of confused why when I called last week they told me they're sending out decisions two weeks within verification. I was verified 1/5, also applied to Epi. I wonder how often they review a batch of applicants...Did you apply for fall or summer semester?

Amazing thread congrats to all of you. I am planning on applying this fall. Are MPH programs on a rolling admissions basis or are they a single deadline and after then they consider the apps? Thanks!

I believe most programs are rolling-basis.
You can look at this thread. People who already got several acceptances by now submitted their applications very early, maybe September or October last year.
Of course I think submission just within priority deadline would not jeopardize your chance, but you have to wait longer while seeing others getting handful of acceptances.

So I managed to boost my GPA from a 3.253 to a 3.369 and am wondering if I should send my updated transcript to the schools I've applied to. I haven't heard back from anywhere yet, but should I check with each school individually first and see if they've already reviewed and if it would be worthwhile or is that not enough of an increase to make a difference? Also, if anyone has done this did you email or call and what did you say? Thanks!

Wow I honestly thought that I had posted this haha my GPA went from a 3.28 to a 3.36 and I did the exact same thing! I applied to GWU, Columbia, USF, UTH, and George Mason, and called all of them and only GW and Columbia said that they would attach my updated transcripts. Both were able to tell me that they hadn't yet looked at my application and GW actually told me that I was in the next pile, and she pulled my application out until I sent the new ones. I don't think it matters so much with the GPA though as much as it does the type of classes you took. I sent new transcripts because I got straight A's in five public health courses and figured that would look good, but I wouldn't have necessarily done the same thing if they weren't related to the MPH.

That's strange, I definitely hadn't heard anything about the 2 weeks thing! I applied for the fall semester, and I called before winter break and she said I was next up so I'm hoping to hear in the next week or two

It depends on the program. Most of mine were a single deadline, or they had a priority deadline in December and a final deadline a month or two later. If you are like me and don't want to wait as long for admission decisions, apply by the priority deadline 🙂

I asked for UMN and their response was, "We have not made any awards for school funded scholarships yet. That process is just beginning and we will likely make the first round ofoffers in early March." Hope that helps!

For those wondering about Yale Graduate School Of Arts and Science's decisions, I spoke with their Admission and I was told that the decisions are made in February and March, and they send out email notification.

Hi everyone,

For anyone who has already been accepted, about how long did it take you to hear back from Boston University?

& Yale if anyone can answer!

Thanks 🙂

I had a very positive interview experience with a student from Columbia's HPM department today. I was told that decisions vary widely from February to March. Judging from last year's thread, it looks like many people heard back on the first week of February.

Did anyone who got an acceptance e-mail from UTHealth get any follow up mails on how to complete the enrollment? I still haven't received the official admission letter or any further communication, since the acceptance mail approximately a month back. A bit worried.

Undergrad School: Large public university
Undergrad GPA/Major GPA: Sophas calculated to 3.26; 3.8 for final 60 hours
Major/Minor: English
GRE: 162 V (90%)/153 Q (52%)/ 4.5 W (80%)

  • 1.5 years managing a membership department for an Association (frequent reports, revamped policies and procedures, maintained database)
  • Volunteer Spanish Cooking Matters instructor, food banks, managing volunteers/first aid/band hospitality 3 years for music festival, tutoring
  • Volunteer/member of urban community garden
  • Studied abroad in Argentina and spent some time in Colombia to learn Spanish/volunteer
I'm hoping that my experience balances out my low Sophas GPA, but I also know the programs I applied to are very competitive. I'm currently seeking work in research or as a dietary aide to round out my background and better prepare for the RD portion.

Any current or past MPH/RD candidates out there who have any advice on strengthening my application if I don't make it this round?

Awesome thank you for the response. As for grades, what would be considered a competitive GPA for good programs? I really don't know much about it and the information is surprisingly not as easily attainable as it was for medical school lol

Has anyone heard from UIC or Loyola yet? My apps were verified the first week of December and I haven't heard anything!

Did everyone put a lot of identifying information (name, program applying to, year, etc.) on each page of their personal statement?

Or did some people just have their name ?

I'm starting to freak out because I only had my name and a title...

I didn't have any of that on each page of my SoP. I don't think I even mentioned my name at all in the entire thing. Just make sure you address the specific school/program you're applying to and why you want to go there. Without that, you're screwed.

Same. I didn't put anything on my SOP at all, like a name or anything, but the way it's written for schools is specific. Like you can tell it's an essay addressed to Emory. I didn't necessary mention what specific department, but I addressed what the BSHE department studies and how I wanted to be able to study under them if that makes sense?

I think schools would know since it's attached to that school's application?

I had my last name as a header on each page and addressed specific school, department, program etc in my statement. If they wanted an in depth or specific header, they would have put that in their instructions.

Okay cool. Yeah I have my name, and obviously made each one school-specific; but I was reading through last year's thread, and some people mentioned that some programs wanted specific identifying information on each page of your SoP. I didn't explicitly see that instruction for any of my schools though, but wasn't sure if generally that was something I was supposed to be doing.

Thanks for the replies!

I had the same problem when I switched from pre-med. I think for the best schools (top 7 or so) you want a GRE at about 60% and above a 3.5. However public health is a lot more about your fit in terms of research interests than medical school is. The biggest factors are usually experience that is displayed in your CV, Personal statement, and LoRs
So there are students who have around 3.3 GPA's (or lower) and GREs below 50% and still end up in the best of the best. Also, I would say that a lot of emphasis shouldn't be on school rank, I have heard again and again that long term career (10 years out of school) there is no difference between going to a #12 school and going to #3 school, it just depends how you use your opportunities and education.

That being said, if you are just trying to get a feel of where you stand, I think GRE is the best indictor and you should shoot for above 60%

I got an email from Emory this morn saying I was admitted to the global epi program as a traditional 4 semester student but not as part of the MPH/MDiv dual degree program I applied to. Now I'm torn up. Emory is my top choice for both MPH and MDiv and now I've been accepted to both and they won't let me do them both..... So many feels Right now
🙂🙁:bored::soexcited::bang::slap:

Ps. It said that the official decision won't be on OPUS for 1-2 weeks so you all don't have to start obsessively checking quite yet lol

Wow that's kind of weird that they would accept you to both but not the dual. Is there any way you can petition them? Or maybe you can enter one program and petition to have the dual added after 1-2 semesters? Anyway, congratulations!

Has anyone heard from Columbia yet? I know that their final deadline isn't until 1/15 but I was just wondering if anyone has heard regarding admissions.

Thank you so much for the information! I unfortunately won't be taking GRE 🙁 but the schools I have on my list accept my MCAT score. I only spoke to Harvard (only reps at an event) and they said a 10 in each section (old mcat) is competitive for them in case any medstudents are reading this.

Didn't get the chance to post but I got accepted via email on 1/8 for UMich HBHE!
Congrats! If you don't mind, could you answer when your application was submitted/verified and some of your basic credentials (GPA, GRE, etc.)

If you click on someone's username, you can go back through their posts and find their original one with their stats! Most people here seem to post only on this thread, so there isn't much content to sift through.

Hope this helps!
