MPH Fall 2016: Applied, Accepted, Waitlisted, Rejected!

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Hey guys,
I am having a mini freak out session. What did your completed and submitted applications look like underneath the program status bar in SOPHAS? Did it look like this? And is there anything further we need to do to make sure the programs we applied to got them?

Do you think its best to send an email/letter with what has changed or just send an updated CV?

If I remember correctly, I think you could add those experiences, since they are new, to your SOPHAS even after you're complete and verified. You can't edit or fix existing ones, but for those new experiences, I think it would be good to add them since I think your application is updated in real time. I don't think sending an updated CV/letter to the program you're interested in would hurt either - I've seen people do that in the past as well.

Hope that helps!

Sorry another question, what if I submitted the SOPHAS application really close to the deadline? The application will be e-submitted to the school, but I am guessing it will most likely arrive after the deadline. Do you think they will still accept it because it was completed on SOPHAS electronically before the deadline?

So, I went on a Fijian piknic (I'm a peace corps volunteer in Fiji) yesterday at the beach with my village and I was like :headphone: "I got my toes in the water, ass in the sand, not a worry in the world ~except if I'll get into Emory/Yale~ a pineapple in my hand, life is good today" :headphone:
Lol

This made me crack up. I'm waiting on my GRE scores to upload for Emory and music is my stress reliever so I feel like I'm on top of the world except the worry about getting in, argh. Fiji sounds awesome right about now too.

Thanks!

From what I've been researching, I think as long as you e-submit before the deadline, most schools will still take a look at your application ONCE it is complete and verified with all the materials required since SOPHAS is updated in real time (schools can see it once it has been e-submitted, but they may not look at it at all until it is complete and verified from my understanding). For example, my GRE scores are going to be late to Emory, but I was told that as long as I was complete and verified before the deadline on the 5th (I was complete on the 1/2), they would still take a look at my application once my scores came in. Therefore, although my SOPHAS is done, to Rollins, I am incomplete and on hold until my scores come in if that makes sense?

It really depends on the school though so I would check on their website to see as well. Hope that helps!

I was in the same situation with several programs (GW, Emory, Yale). I called them and most schools said that it wasn't a problem as long as you were e-submitted by the deadline. If you're concerned, just call admissions and double check to make yourself feel better. Anything can cause the worst anxiety in the app process lol

I finally got my OPUS login information for Emory actually only to find out it's the same as undergraduate (like all my demographic information and everything is on there already). If I get accepted, my OPUS ID will be exactly the same as my undergraduate one was so that was really anti-climatic.

....That didn't stop me from having a damn near heart attack at work just now though, hahahahahaha.

HAHA same! I just finished reading the last thread and got an email from Emory about OPUS. Thanks guys.

So I only selected one program, but the email says I should rank others? What else are you guys considering? I'm more of a social/behavioral sciences person, but I'm really interested in epi and biostats too.

No problem!

With Quant scores so low (just arghhh), I think my chances at Epi are done unfortunately (My Verbal and AW were decent though). However, my top choice is the BSHE program, with Global Health or Environmental Health as my 2nd/3rd choice respectively. BSHE would suit my interests since I've done quite a lot of behavioral intervention and health education work at Emory. However, as someone who wants her work to be based in intersectionality, identity development and social determinants of health (going to probably end up in preventive or behavioral medicine to some degree), I can see myself in Global Health and Environmental Health.

GWU applicants: Does the time we hear back with decisions depend on the specific program we apply to? For example, would the time frame be different for global health applicants vs. epi? Wasn't sure if the school makes decisions or the actual department does.

I also received that email today, maybe it means they just have finished processing all of your paperwork and the application is ready to be reviewed by the admissions board?

Thanks. Hope they make a (positive) decision soon enough!

When I had my admissions appointment back in September, they told me it's the actual department that makes the decisions. So my guess would be that hearing back also depends on the specific program you apply to.

Hi everyone! I received a (weird) email from Yale today, telling me that my application is now 'complete'. Did anyone else receive this email, too? They sent me an email month ago saying that they've received my application and that they'll start reviewing soon, and not they're telling me my application is complete.. I'm confused 🙁
I got that too! Even after they said it was received like a week before. So strange.

For me, GWU answered within ten days of verification. I was verified in the first few days of December. Still waiting on on BU and Emory, which were verified 12/1 and 12/4 respectively.

Did you apply epi for GW?

Same here! I was wondering how that would work. Yay Emory alums! 🙂

Hello, for anyone that applied to Tufts MPH, I received an email with the subject "admissions decision" and access to a login portal. However, once I logged in there was no decision to be found. Anyone else know what's going on?

Going through waves of anxiety!!! I'm very well aware of my low gpa and low gre scores. I realized my interest in public health late in the game; therefore, I don't have much relevant experience from graduating until now. I do have strong letters of rec and I'm hoping my SoP will also help.
Look forward to some optimistic responses and input from you guys!

Did anyone else apply to Colorado State? And for what? And do you know when decisions start rolling out?

Basically yes. Also, keep in mind that you can add more designations even after submitting. This way, if you feel like you don't have time to write a bunch of SoPs, you can apply to schools with the soonest deadlines first and do the other ones later.

Is there any way that you can cancel your order. It just seems a shame to sit through a stressful 3+ hour test if you don't really need to. I guess you can always choose not to report your newest scores if you don't do better.

Apologies for a very delayed reply, but I did retake it and managed a 165V/ 165Q/ 5.5 writing score. I'm glad I retook it!

Thank you!! Definitely the earliest I have seen from them, but I was not about to question it haha Best of luck to you!

Thanks! I did a little more digging, and it does look like some IDV applicants found out in January last year. We HSB folk will just have to be patient until the start of Feb!

@benzyne It's awesome that you have been given an interview by Dartmouth! That is one of my dream schools... hahaha and yeah I also read the stuff that one person wrote about getting an interview to Columbia and got a little nervous. I think certain MPH programs use interviews to allow them to holistically look at prospective students if they are on the fence about them. So at least if you were given an interview you can rest assured that they were very interested in you!

So according to gradcafe Emory's Epi dep sent out a bunch of PhD notifications, all rejections...., a few days ago and I hear from past threads that the PhD apps get viewed first.... Maybe they're getting close to finishing up with those and will move on to the MPH apps soon..... 🙄

I saw that yesterday myself...... all the rejections, man. From what I read on last year's thread, Emory sent a lot of acceptances between Dec-March for the MPH programs, with a majority in mid-to late January into February. I probably won't hear back myself until then, which is hurting my soul (working for Emory means I can't not check my OPUS, but just arghhhhhhh).

Here's to hoping all of MPH candidates end up where we wanna go.

Congrats on all the acceptances! Do you mind me asking when you were verified for GW?

Called GW to ask about decision turn around time and was told that their website says 6-8 weeks but to expect to hear back in 4-6 weeks. The wait is killing me slowly! 🙁 Is the general sdn consensus that that's their standardized answer but everyone hears back sooner? :nailbiting:

You should hear back really quickly from GW! I heard back about 1-2 weeks after application marked complete
