MPH Fall 2016: Applied, Accepted, Waitlisted, Rejected!

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Hey guys, does anyone know if there is a thread specifically for HPM applicants? Now that everyone has received some acceptances, I would love to talk with people to compare the HPM programs at different schools (I am an HPM candidate myself). Best to combine our knowledge and brain power! If there isn't a thread yet but people are interested in this, let me know and I can try and get one started.

Does anyone know if there's an admitted students facebook page for Colorado?

Anyone go to the HPM U-Mich meet the faculty day thing?

Did you have a formal interview?
What was it like?

I wish I knew... I attended virtual session since I am an international applicant. The session itself was pretty informative and casual. I have just received a Skype interview invite from a faculty member.
So nervous..! Any tips?!

I had my phone interview with a Michigan faculty member this morning. The professor asked me about my research and then we spent the remaining half hour discussing why Michigan would be a good fit for me. Be prepared to ask questions!

Just got a second email saying my Yale application is complete and they will let me know when a decision has been made. Got the first one a month ago. Weird
Same thing happened to me about 2 weeks ago!

Certificate programs tend to be geared more toward a specific subject area, and have fewer number of courses so as not to constitute an actual degree. Unfortunately, since I could not gauge your stats or background from you prior posts, I cannot tell you why you were accepted into a certificate program and not a degree program. If your ultimate goal is MPH, and you are accepted into a program, then chose that over the certificate.

I just clarified from Pitt and they said I was accepted to the certificate program but not the MPH degree as I wanted. Guess it's not a big deal as I heard back from other schools, but I was only surprised because a lot of the MPH programs I applied to don't have their MPH/certificates as a separate acceptance and assumed I was admitted to Pitt until I got the rejection letter today. I'll be posting stats here soon!

Thanks a lot, Montreux!

Anybody still waiting to hear back from Johns Hopkins and Berkeley (MPH in Epi)? (Applied 12/15 and 12/1 respectively)

Yes applied to Berkeley on 12/1 as well and haven't heard anything. I think most applicants haven't heard from Berkeley yet either

Rejected by Columbia SMS. Don't really care to be honest as I'm not a fan of spending more than a week in nyc

for the people who received merit awards from columbia, did you get a separate email for it? if so how long did it take after the acceptance letter?

@nlm13 I received a $30,000 merit award from Columbia on 2/16. I received my acceptance to the program on 2/12. If you minus off the weekend (2/13 and 2/14), it was about a 2 day turn around. Several others seem to have received their scholarship offers the day after receiving an acceptance to the program, though.

eeek ok thanks, fingers crossed..

Has anyone received emails from BU today?

Also does anyone know if they send acceptances regularly at the same time?

Any insight would be greatly appreciated!

It seems like they send them as they make their decisions rather than in specific large wave days. I would expect to hear back about 3-4 weeks after you applied

For reference, last year, Columbia's requirements to receive a merit award were a 3.75 GPA and at least 90% on each of your sections on the GRE. I'm not sure if those standards changed this year though!

Do you have any advice on securing other funding options at Columbia?

Also, I was reading on the website that 1st semester students are assigned clusters and take multiple classes everyday with their clusters. Would you say that set schedule makes it impossible to have a part time day job? Or do you have any insight regarding working part time while being a full time student?

I emailed the FinAid office recently and that's what they told me also, so it looks like it's consistent from year to year.

For reference, here is what they wrote: "In order to be considered for merit scholarships you must have an overall GPA of 3.75 and scored above the 90th% on all sections of your standardized test."

Like others above, also rejected from Columbia SMS today.

Don't mind so much because 1) still riding the high from Emory's acceptance 2) it was my third pick school and 3) not going to miss two years of what would assuredly be a financial struggle.

A rejections is still no fun, though. UNC is going to be the hardest wait...it's my top choice, so now I'm really anxious.

Columbia's financial aid office is very honest in saying that there aren't too many opportunities to fund your education. Basically, from what I got last year at Admitted Students' Day, you need to start looking in October to find the most and best options in terms of aid :/

All first year MPH students are put into 4 cohorts. Cohorts 1 and 2 go from 8:30-2:30 while cohorts 3 and 4 go from 1-5:30. Of course there are days when the schedule is different. You're going to be in class for 22+ hours a week in your first semester, and the workload is quite heavy. I would not recommend working part time at all. That being said, there were a few students who did work part time, but they were an extremely small minority

Anyone know how long it is currently taking to get your application verified? I am afraid that I might have applied too late to Berkeley.

Good luck Everyone!

*Edit: SOPHAS application was verified two weeks after so I made my deadlines! I also added community-based programs.

Congratulations to everyone being accepted! Every time I log in I see some wonderful posts!

So an update: I have been accepted to Yale! A few months ago I did not think I would get in anywhere, but I have now been accepted to my top 4 schools! I am officially on the fence between my top 2 programs (Yale EMD and Berkeley IDV). Berkeley has been so kind to me, and I love their public health department. I loooove the research that is coming out of Yale, but I am not sure about the transition from SoCal to Connecticut. And honestly, I never thought I would get in so I have not looked at the program as much as I should have.

Does anyone have any advice in regards to picking a school? I have met with UCB students, and would now love to hear from Yale students. Any advice about these specific programs? :help:

@Kaku22$ thats sad to hear. But I guess they rejected you for not having research experience as your and mine scores are almost near and I am also a international student. but I got accepted by UW probably because of my research experience for a year....Anyways dont lose hope ...🙂
Thanks a lot dear. This waiting game along with the stress of funding my education is getting frustrated.
I have applied for my programs in late NOV/ early DEC. But still under review in JHU, Yale, Emory, Umich

Thank you!! This is very helpful!

Still waiting to hear from UW Global Health. They said decisions would be released in mid-February and we are now officially in the latter half of February. I don't want to make a final choice without all the options on the table!

Related, have any of you contacted schools you don't plan to attend to let them know? If so, did you just contact the admissions office directly?

I also emailed Columbia regarding scholarships consideration. They said "In order to have been considered for a merit scholarship you must have had an overall GPA of 3.70 and have scored in the 90th % on all sections of your standardized test."
According to this statement, an applicant must have GPA 3.70, GRE V162, Q165, AW5.0. That is really tough! Congrats to those who receive scholarships!

Just as a follow-up to this, I received a $30,000 merit award to Columbia last week and my GRE scores were not in the 90th percentile across all subjects (Q162). So there is hope for others out there - perhaps they decided to do a more holistic overview of the application this year 🙂

Quick question now that we're on the subject of financial aid from Columbia:

Does anyone remember where the link for the financial survey is--maybe a specific email where people remember receiving it? I tried back combing in my emails and can't seem to find it. I definitely remember not filling any financial survey out though so I'm trying to go back and cover all my bases.

I received mine on Feb. 3 but I know other people received theirs earlier.

Related to that, for those who filled out the survey, when you click on the survey link, does it bring you back to the empty application form (as opposed to bringing you to a page that says you have already completed the survey)? I'm second-guessing whether mine actually got submitted because I haven't heard anything about financial aid yet...

Did you receive it through an email? Also, when did you submit your application? I submitted all my documents on the 15th (the last day lol) so I'm wondering if that is why I have yet to receive the link for the survey.

In addition, if you're second guessing if you actually submitted the survey, I would go ahead and email them! Better safe than sorry 🙂

Yes, I did get it through an email. I submitted my FAFSA last week and then updated it after I filed my taxes this past weekend. But I don't think they're related because I received the link before I submitted my FAFSA. Did you indicate in your SOPHAS application that you wanted to receive financial aid? If you didn't, that might be a reason why you didn't receive the link. Maybe try checking your spam box also?

And noooow I'm getting nervous haha I did indicate on my SOPHAS application that I wanted to be considered for financial aid. I wonder if it is because I am a MHA application and not MPH. But still, they're all within Mailman so financial aid processes should be the same. I emailed them so hopefully they get back to me soon. Thanks for your help though!

If anyone is in a similar boat or knows more, let us know!

Can someone please explain the Boston University Merit award? Is it the same amount each time for three semesters or is the award divided by the three semesters and applied to tuition?

In my letter it said that my merit award is being divided by the three semesters. So 12K --> 4K each semester

Have people found that a decision about a merit award came soon after getting accepted?

Same, I was 90+ in verbal and writing but nowhere close in quantitative. I wonder if they have different scholarship types!

(Though that's weird/sucks for both of us) it's good to hear I'm not the only one who somehow did not get the link lol what concentration within MPH did you apply for?

Keep us updated if (when) you eventually do receive it! 🙂 I will also do the same.
