MPH Fall 2016: Applied, Accepted, Waitlisted, Rejected!

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Yay!! I'm leaning toward GW as well! I already live in the area and love it. Maybe I'll see you in the epi program next year 🙂 Just worried about the cost - did they happen to mention how to lower it?

I asked a current student about scholarships because I haven't been notified about anything and she told me that she received word of scholarships with the acceptance letter. But I'm not sure. I asked the same question, and unfortunately no advice on how to lower cost. She mentioned a practicum scholarship that some students are eligible for, but that would be closer to the end of the program.

I recall earlier in January asking when we would hear about scholarships, and someone in admissions mentioned sometime in March? Some conflicting information. But considering no one else has heard back about money, I would assume March when we should wait till.

I look forward to seeing you in the program hopefully 🙂

That's great news! Congratulations!
By any chance did they mention when are they going to announce scholarships? Thank you and Congrats again!!!! 😀

Nope, no idea 🙁 Someone I spoke to on the phone with at admissions told me we should hear about it in March.

For those who were accepted to UMD, have you received your official letter from the grad school yet? I received an acceptance email from the department chair last Wednesday and I know it can take up to two weeks to get the official letter from the grad school. If I don't hear anything by next Wednesday then I will definitely follow up with them. Just curious about others' experiences. I have also checked my status in the portal and it still says under review.

I received the official acceptance maybe 3-4 weeks after the department acceptance email.

I requested $200 and received $150. Perhaps the trick is to request 50 more than you need 😛
Thank you all for sharing this, I am coming from Boston and could really use any support they can provide, so it is a huge help!

Just booked my travel for Berkeley's Diversity and Admitted Student days! 🙂 Will I be seeing any of you there?
Can I ask when admitted students day is? I just want to use it as a gauge for if I haven't received a response from them by/close to that date, then I can consider myself un-officially rejected lol

I'm not sure about Diversity Day, but Admitted Student Day is March 7. I hope you hear something soon!

I'm in the same situation. When were you verified??
@max04 In the same boat also and haven't heard anything. I believe they've released epi decisions b/c a bunch of people have posted about that but I haven't heard about any other depts...

I received my recommendation to the MPH (Epi + Biostats) program from the Berkeley SPH last week, however have not gotten my official admit from the Graduate divison. I spoke to the Admissions coordinator from SPH because I wanted to be 100% sure I was admitted before I traveled across the country to visit for the day and she told me they are transferring to a new system this year and as a result a lot of the admissions decisions have been delayed. She told me I might not receive my official admit until 2 weeks from now (which would be the day after the admitted students day!). So don't lose hope - it could just be that yours is also delayed because of the system transfer over 🙂

Ah, just saw this, thanks for the information! I haven't received any notice at all (not even a recommendation which would be amazing), but maybe I will cling to that last shred of hope. Thanks!

Question for the masses -- how do you view the MHS program at Johns Hopkins? I've found some older threads discussing this, but not much in terms of recent perception of the program and the merits of an "MHS" degree itself. I have primarily applied to MPH programs, but made the decision last year that the Hopkins MPH probably isn't the right fit for my long-term goals (more focused research) or schedule (I won't be able to leave my job until the end of July/early August, and I'd personally prefer a full two-year program). I just found out that I was accepted to the Health Behavior MHS program at Hopkins -- I'm thrilled to have the option to go to JHSPH, but I'm not sure if receiving an MPH from another school would be a better option than holding an MHS, especially if this ends up being my terminal degree (at this point in time, I'd like to pursue my PhD, but I also want to plan for a scenario in which I change my mind or pursuing a doctorate isn't possible). Is anyone familiar with the JHSPH MHS program and have any thoughts as to how the MHS stacks up against an MPH in the professional world?

I got that mail too. Are they sending to everyone? How the waitlist works here and what is the amount? Do you have any idea?
Another one got that email is here.

As far as I know, the amount itself would not be something big(1k or so..). However, if you receive the scholarship, you are qualified for the in-state tuition during the first year, which is probably a huge discount to non-Texan students. You know how much their in-state tution is..
Though, if you are a Texas resident, that scholarship may not be an attractive offer.

So, do we expect to hear from Harvard this Friday?!
When I read the last year's thread, Harvard sent out its decision on Fridays. The first group was SM2 at the last week of February.
Or is there anybody got a good news already?

Hi everyone! I've been lurking but I'm new to posting here.

Here is a very brief description of my credentials as to not bore you:
Major/Minor: Biomedical Science, Minors in Chemistry and Anthropology.
GPA: 3.61 (SOPHAS)
GRE: 157V/154Q/4.5AW
EXP: 2.5 yrs research, 4 publications, 5 conference presentations. Several leadership positions at the lab and in organizations on campus.

I had one HECK of a time getting my applications in due to several misunderstandings and mishaps. So below I included the dates that I received an email from the schools confirming my application was complete and under review. (Lol yes, not until February). I went a little crazy applying 'cause I was nervous about the lateness and getting accepted.

Applied: Emory (GLEPI- Feb 9), Harvard (Epi, Feb 2), Boston Uni (Feb 1), Columbia (Epi, Feb 5), Yale (Epi, Feb 16??), Ohio State (Epi, Feb 12), George Wash (Epi, Feb 3), Tulane (MPHTM, Feb 18), Uni Illinois- Chicago (Epi, Feb 2)

Accepted: Boston University (Feb 18), George Washington (Feb 22)
Waitlisted: Columbia (2/24)
..and I haven't heard anything from the rest.

Also - people talking about why NYU would extend their deadlines.
I read somewhere that some top schools might do this to increase their number of applications to lower their accepted/applied ratios to improve rank. I don't know if this is true, but just a thought.

I actually heard my recommendation to the program awhile ago, January 22nd, and I didn't get the official letter from the grad school till February 17th. So, I wouldn't be too worried if it takes a while.

Saw this posted on the grad cafe Feb 19: "Admissions office says admissions committee meets every thursday and that decisions are released on fridays. Another rep said rolling release of admissions (but that everyone should know before March 4th)." ... I have a feeling a lot of us will be refreshing our emails repeatedly on Friday!!

Accepted to Johns Hopkins for a MS in Epid! In the letter they said all MPH students are eligible to receive 75% off tuition the second year of the program as long as they maintain a certain GPA and pass an exam...enticing. Verified on Jan 14th. I regret applying to so many schools :/
Also someone asked how Michigan applicants received the notification of the dean's scholarship- you'll get an email from the Michigan SPH.

Hi! I just got accepted to the MHS in Epi program too. Applied on 24th Jan, verified on 28th. Which track did you apply to?
Do you know about any scholarships/ funding at JHU for MHS programs?

Lol I thought I might be the only one going through this dilemma! I have a MPH in Epi offer from Emory that I would really really like to take up! But the prospect of studying in JHSPH is quite alluring though I'm unsure how differently it is viewed from a MPH.

In case anyone else is still waiting to hear, I reached out to UW and asked when the rest of the Global Health decisions would be coming out. They said they expect to roll them out in the next week or two. Looks like it could still be a while!

Oregon (PSU Program) emailed me back-- staff has to submit their admission recs by March 5th... hold tight. We have another week and a half!

Dean's scholarship to Michigan (50% tuition-only)!

Officially accepted to UW EOHS program (without funding) and Berkeley. I am trying to talk to some current students at Berkeley about TA/RA positions and how they funded their education, but right now it seems out of reach, especially with the cost of living.

Visiting Michigan and Emory next month so hopefully that will help me decide. Lot's of hard decisions, everyone.

Congrats everyone on all your admissions!

I think we both got into the same program at Berkeley. Have you heard anything about funding? I received an email response back from Norma saying that they won't give financial aid packages out until an accepted student commits and files their statement of intent to register, which to me sounds bogus (students need to know how much to budget!)

I heard that as well. I guess Berkeley receives so many applicants across the graduate programs that they can't provide financial aid packages/estimates until you intend to enroll. I have no idea how to plan around that, although I should be eligible for in-state tuition and am therefore finding the whole thing a bit less concerning.

Anyone who was accepted into GW Epi considering the one-year accelerated MPH?

Your application was sent for review...........
Just got a mail from NYU

Do I need to reply like thank you or anything???Will it make a difference, don't think so ..confused..its my first time. Anyone??

Hi everyone- I'm new the forum but I'm enjoying seeing everyone's acceptances. Congratulations and best of luck!

I am wondering if anyone has heard about Merit money from GW or Emory. I was accepted with merit money to BU and received that offer with the official acceptance letter about 2 weeks ago. I'm thinking I will be a candidate for merit, at least at GW, and am wondering if anyone else has heard!

I called about that and they said to expect packages in mid-March (for GW)

Congrats on the acceptance! I was accepted to the MS program in Global Health and the Environment, was that the one you applied to? I spoke with the director of the GHE program on the phone who said something about a $5000 fellowship for the first semester, but that I would need to figure out my own funding with TA/RA positions. That is interesting about financial aid packages being given out after students accept. I suppose I can talk to current students to see how many received funding after they accepted...It makes it super hard to make a decision. I agree it is bogus! I don't want to give up a position at other schools where I have more funding without knowing! I am trying to decide if I should even visit since they did not offer to reimburse that and I am across the country...

Ec_lc1114 being in-state certainly makes it more reasonable. I would be more comfortable committing in that case. I bet you have a better chance of funding being in-state as well. Good luck!!

Just got accepted to UIC today MPH Epi! Anyone else interested in Chicago?
Congrats on UIC! Did they notify via email or did they just update your application status on your login page?
