MPH Fall 2016: Applied, Accepted, Waitlisted, Rejected!

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Does anyone know much about the Health Services program at UW? I just got in and would love to know everyone's thoughts! I am mainly interested in Health Policy and would like to know how you think UW compares to place like Emory or GW.
Congratulations on getting into UW! Somewhat unrelated, when did you hear back from Berkeley?

I talked to someone in the COPHP program this fall and they said they loved it!
Ooh, really?! I spoke with the graduate student assistant (also a student) who very much enjoyed it, but I'm hungry for more details, haha. Very much torn between Berkeley and UW right now!

I did my undergrad at UW in global health and have worked within the school of public health the last three years. UW health services has great affiliations with organizations within the Seattle area and also a great international focus if you want to move into global health.

I'd say UW is strongest for global health (very close connections with Gates Foundation) and anything cancer related (Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center and Seattle Cancer Care Alliance). Other great organizations in include Group Health's Research Institute and UW's hospital system that serves the majority of the pacific northwest.

If you are interested in the global health side, Seattle has become a new hub of global health organizations:
  • Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation
  • PATH
  • I-Tech
  • Health Alliance International
  • Institute for Health Metrics and Evaluation

Wow, thanks for the awesome post!! That really helps. I applied to the Health Services track because my interest is in Health Policy. I feel like most of the things/organizations you mentioned are very involved on the policy side as well. Did you have any interaction or experience with the policy side of things in undergrad?

I feel like UW is a great option because Seattle really is a great health organization hub and as a result UW is getting more recognition as well.

CONGRATS and thanks for the heads up. Did you get in SM2 or SM1? I've been refreshing my email and the portal like crazy! I just want to know ASAP, and it's driving me mad!

Hi! It was for the 2 year 80 credit degree program - I think thats the SM2?? Best of luck!! 🙂

I'm still waiting on Columbia now...it's been almost two weeks since my interview. I'm just a bit impatient because I have a pending interview across the country. If Columbia accepts me before then I'll most likely cancel my interview and trip since it would save me hundreds of dollars

I heard back from Columbia last night, sent me an email that I had been waitlisted for Epi. Good luck to everyone else still waiting to hear from them!

It depends on what you mean by health policy. My impression is that most of UW's health policy work is very applied, like how will health provider strategies affect outcomes. Probably not as focused on the ACA as a school in DC. There's also a lot of work focused on Native American communities that's very interesting.

The place that I work is also health policy related. I work at UW's Institute for Health Metrics and Evaluation that's a relatively new organization that's doing a lot of quantitative work around health data. We publish results that are used to inform health policies, most notably the Global Burden of Disease Study. Our website is healthdata.org.

Also check out our cool data viz's because they're fun to play with:

obamacares -- crazy congratulations! Did you receive an email from Harvard updating you at all? I know we have to check through the Portal but I'm almost afraid to log on....

P.S. When did you submit your app through SOPHAS?

I'm not getting good results. I see some apps are still open including BU. Do you think it looks desperate to apply this late? Would I have a chance or do you think acceptances are pretty much done.

Anywhere you think would be particularly receptive to a late application.

All advise gratefully received

what programs are you looking at? I don't think University of Iowa has closed yet, and it's not because of an extended deadline either so you might have a better chance than say NYU, who have extended their deadline and sent off a lot of acceptances already.

South Florida (4/1), Alabama-Birmingham (5/1), WashU (3/1), Tulane (Rolling), and (UNT Rolling) are all other places that I applied to that are still accepting apps.

Hello! Brown University MPH has rolling admissions. It's a small program and many students receive aid. I believe BU does as well. Good luck!!

Looking for all Pros and cons of Emory vs. Columbia! Anything at all so I can compile a massive list in order to make a decision

Especially if anyone has spoken to students at columbia and can talk about if they have enough time to work part time during core curriculum?
I'm a current Columbia student! Just message me all of your questions!

Just got rejected from Berkeley-was waiting a while to hear back 🙁 I guess it's okay as my geographic preference was mostly east coast but I could have possibly gotten in-state tuition.
Guess it will be b/w JHU and Yale now (MPH in epi/want to do concentration in health disparities)

Sorry to hear that. I'm guessing mine will be coming anytime now too. You have some great options though so I'm sure you'll end up loving wherever you decide to go!

I noticed on GradCafe that Berkeley sent out a number of rejections today. I have not received one so far...but I am fully expecting it!

best of luck in hearing back 🙂. just hope whatever school all of us future public health folks end up going to, it's one that's rly the best fit for each of us and our future goals

Hey everyone! I was wondering if I could get some insights from you all. I've been admitted to both an MS and MPH program and I was curious about whether a doctoral degree is necessary in the field? Can PhDs pursue jobs outside of academia in public health?

Look into University of Iowa. Their MPH website says their deadline isn't until mid-April and they say that most of their MPH students receive full-funding! Best of luck with everything!

Did you have an interview with Columbia? If so, how long did it take for you to hear back? I don't know why I'm getting so anxious about this :/

*panicking*
I was debating between applying to the Population and Family Health program or SMS at Columbia, and ended up picking PFH. BUT apparently I glossed over the part that said "Prospective MPH candidates should possess two years of full-time, public health-related work experience." I don't have those 2-years!!

What do I do???? Or does Columbia, like other schools, ever pass your app along to another department that they think might be a better fit? I'm seriously freaking out right now.

Hey guys! I am attending Visit Emory 3/31 and 4/1 and am flying into ATL at 8 in the morning. I am looking for advice on what are my best options to getting to the university. Thanks in advance!
Hey! you should join the Admitted students page on facebook if you are already on facebook, they have great info like that there. Someone asked a similar question and the response was ideally to get an Uber, they cost about 18-22 bucks from the airport. You could also go by train and then MARTA but they advised that it could be a little confusing if you've never been to Atlanta as you would have to change trains or get a train then a bus and takes more than an hour.

Was just rejected from Harvard's SM2 in global health and population. Good luck to everyone else still waiting to hear back!

I don't have 2 years of full-time public health experience but I got waitlisted for PopFam. Although maybe that's the reason for the waitlisting... Still, I think they're looking at you as a whole instead of just throwing you out because you're missing one thing. Good Luck!

Rejected from Harvard (Global Health) - 65 credit.
Its too tough to get huge loans for JHSPH MPH in my country.
NO reply from Emory, Univ Mich and Yale
having a feeling of impending doom!!!

Rejected from Harvard-45 Global Health. Good luck to everyone else =)

What about Tulane and BU?

Got selected in Tulane and boston too...
But Tulane dont offer any scholarship, Boston offered 15k. The real problem (which I was not aware of,while applying) is, Its nearly impossible in my country to get these huge loans! I have done mistake while selecting universities! I should had applied for some cheap universities

Congratulations to all who have been accepted and good luck to those who are with me waiting anxiously for the results.

Quick question, those who have been accepted to Drexel, if you don't mind in telling that anyone of you mentioned about scholarship in personal statement. Or if anyone get through it for the endowed scholarships without mentioning? Just curious to know if someone didn't?

Hope for the best! I would definitely look into applying to additional schools/programs. You still have time!!

Don't be nervous, just think about what you can do now? There are multiple websites offering small scholarships too like collegeboard, finaid etc. if that works, or talk to financial office of the school?

Hey guys! Is anyone considering between UW and Emory, specifically Health Services/BSHE? I was totally surprised when I found out I got into UW yesterday. I'm from California and maybe thinking I should stay on the west coast? I can't go to UW's visiting day because I already booked by flight to Atlanta the same day. Does anyone have any thoughts? Pros/Cons of each school/program? Thanks in advance 🙂
