If you interested in reading about Berkeley's School of Public Health - this is hot from the press!
You too! Yup, GH&E! And I also was informed of the $5k fellowship.
I'm being flown out for a conference in Berkeley in April so I am going to visit campus then rather than pay out of pocket and attending the visit day in March. Let me know if you hear anything from current students!
Anyone have plans to go to Emory's day 1 of visit day on March 31 and then straight to UNC's on April 1? It's really too bad they make it the same weekend, but I suppose that's intentional.
Look into University of Iowa. Their MPH website says their deadline isn't until mid-April and they say that most of their MPH students receive full-funding! Best of luck with everything!

Thanks! I'm from CA so fortunately will be able to attend Cal's and UMich. How was UNC?😉 that's great your dept had a separate visit day.For my department UNC already had a visit day. I guess it is just an unfortunate coincidence. I am unable to attend Berkeley's because of U Michigan's. I will be at Emory visit day, though. Good luck!
It is! I wonder how much of a problem this is at other SPHs at state schools...Wow, I must say the multiple mentions of funding issues is worrisome: faculty retiring and unable to hire more, thought of cutting financial aid for students, etc.

Accepted to University of Michigan MPH in HMP! 🙂
FYI, I had an interview with a faculty member last week.
For those who got a scholarship offer from U of Michgan, when did you receive the email? Was it a separate notice or included in the admission decision?
I know CA in general is in a huge financial deficit and so public schools are taking the hit. I think private Schools of PH as well as those in other states may be a bit more protected. It is! I wonder how much of a problem this is at other SPHs at state schools...

I know the feeling. Stay strong.Just got rejected by Columbia 🙁
Sorry; I know the feeling. Was just rejected from Harvard's SM2 in global health and population. Good luck to everyone else still waiting to hear back!
Yes, I think so, are you? I am looking for a schedule of Day 2 (4/1). Have you been able to find this anywhere?I'm glad you were able to receive funds to help you out! That is quite the commute from Oregon, will you be attending both days?
Thanks I appreciate it. Fingers crossed for both of us!I don't have 2 years of full-time public health experience but I got waitlisted for PopFam. Although maybe that's the reason for the waitlisting... Still, I think they're looking at you as a whole instead of just throwing you out because you're missing one thing. Good Luck!
Anyone have any information comparing Emory and Michigan? The main thing I hear is that Michigan is very research focused, while Emory is also research focused, but has more of a work-school balance and has a strong focus on employment and practice. I also hear Michigan is smaller student-to-faculty ratio, but professors are approachable at both schools. Any other information? Any current students want to chime in? Thanks! I have seen some threads on this, but looking for more info.
I applied for the EH-EPI programs at both schools.
Just for all to know, I did not receive the financial aid survey, but got accepted to Columbia. I also have an EFC of zero so I'm not sure what the financial aid survey is indicative of.I applied MPH in CDE, was accepted last week, and received a 25,000 financial aid support or Mailman Scholar thing. NOT a merit scholarship lolol. For those who look at this thread next year, the financial survey IS likely indicative of an acceptance.
I'm right now deciding between Yale or Columbia for CDE. Yale seems that it does not give good packages, so it may be Columbia for me. Anyone have any thoughts or opinions? It seems that Yale is more competitive to get into and has smaller class sizes, but Columbia is ranked 5 and is offering me more money.

I got an e-mail from them. I copied it below🙂Where did you see/hear that most students receive full funding?
Is your sister in the school of public health? I wonder if it's different for different schools- it seems like law school is fine, haha. 🙂My sister is at Cal and I think it is particularly bad there. And because its so popular with out of state students they end up taking the hit in tuition increases
I'm having the same debate in my head right now! I am still so torn 🙁 I'm going to Michigan's admitted students day in March. I'm not sure if I'll be able to attend Emory's visiting day. I was also considering getting a flight up to DC as well to visit GW. Decisions, decisions!!
Also I was really hoping I'd hear from Harvard today! 🙁 I'm basically sure I'm not getting in but it would be nice to know either way!
Congratulations!!!! May I ask you when were you verified? I'm still waiting to hear back from them.Accepted to the department of Health Policy at Yale! 🙂
She's an undergrad, I was under the impression it was university-wide but I could be wrongIs your sister in the school of public health? I wonder if it's different for different schools- it seems like law school is fine, haha. 🙂

I want to add some information that I have.
Regarding RA/TA positions, UMichigan has tuition waiver benefit for those work-study opportunities while Emory does not have any tuition waiver program. Also, in UMichigan, internship is a degree requirement.
Hope it helps.
Wow! Yeah UCs get more and more competitive each year. Wild.My brother was rejected from Cal with a 4.5 GPA, 800 in physics and Math 2 SAT subject tests, a high ACT score, and tons of ECs because they were accepting less in-state and more OOS. It probably didn't help that he applied engineering.
SAME I was really hoping news would come today but at this point I'm holding out for next week. They told me by the end of February/first week of March when I emailed them asking about when I would know by.Congratulations!!!! May I ask you when were you verified? I'm still waiting to hear back from them.
I will let you know. Emailing some students today. Is it one of your top choices?
Thank you! I verified on 1/12. I applied on way back in November last year, though.Congratulations!!!! May I ask you when were you verified? I'm still waiting to hear back from them.
Thank you! I received the 'application complete' email on 1/12. I applied on way back in November last year, though.Congratulations, that's incredible! When did you get the "application complete" email?
So I am applying for MPHs in Epi, I am definitely interested in applied Epi (no real interest in a career in academia or further education at this time) and have always pictured myself working for the government in some capacity. I've been struggling a lot recently with the cost of the degree and how I will be able to afford loan payments on a salary of around $50k (maybe less) for my first few years out of school. I toyed with working before getting my MPH, but any jobs I can do with my BSPH, wouldn't allow me much room for saving anyway. I am wondering if anyone else is in the same boat as me and what your though processes are regarding the prospect of about $90k in debt. That seems to be the cost of a private school MPH & cost of living. I have looked somewhat into Public Service Loan Forgiveness with the Stafford and Direct Plus loans and I assume that will be the route I will go. Anyone have any insights into that program?
I have been accepted to Emory, GW, and BU(with $20k merit). Still waiting on Yale. I won't be getting merit money from Emory (they already released all of their merit finalists) and am still unsure about Merit from GW. I know FinAid packages aren't released until mid-March, but since I do not have substantial debt from undergrad I am not expecting much in that department.
This is becoming a lot to digest- I am sure I'm not the only one feeling that way. Thoughts/insights are greatly appreciated 🙂
I'm deciding between UMich and Emory too, leaning towards UMich. Thanks for the information! Is the work-study program different than Emory's REAL program which offers some money to students?
Me too! I was hoping to get some news (hopefully good news!), but I guess we have another week of waiting ahead...good luck!SAME I was really hoping news would come today but at this point I'm holding out for next week. They told me by the end of February/first week of March when I emailed them asking about when I would know by.
Thank you for your answer! I was verified on 1/28, hoping to get some good news next week. Is this your top choice? Congrats again!Thank you! I verified on 1/12. I applied on way back in November last year, though.
I think it was Minnesota that sent some decisions over a weekend, and I think I got my UT-H rejection on a Saturday...there might be hope for weekend correspondence!Do schools typically not send emails (acceptances/rejections) on the weekends?
Yes. Within a week of the acceptance. Those who got accepted to Columbia, did you get an email from OrgSync?
You're welcome 🙂 Good luck! I'm keeping all my options open until Financial Aid comes through!Thank you for your answer! I was verified on 1/28, hoping to get some good news next week. Is this your top choice? Congrats again!
Sent from my iPad using SDN mobile
Yes, same day as acceptance email. Those who got accepted to Columbia, did you get an email from OrgSync?

This conversation is helping me lean further towards UMich, even though I came in here with Emory as my top choice =P
It's my understanding that if you're offered an RA/TA position (At U M), you do not pay any tuition for the term that you hold that position.
Emory's program kind of seems like something that might help you cover a little bit of the tuition, but probably not nearly as good of a deal as getting your entire tuition waived and getting amazing experience being a research assistant??
Anyone who knows more about this than I do, please correct me if I'm wrong.
You have been echoing exactly EVERYTHING that's been going on inside my head having to do with funding and grad school haha
I've come to the conclusion that if I calculate everything and receive all my funding, and it seems like I can't get my degree for under $50k in debt, then it's not worth it. I have gotten into all the programs I wanted, but at the end of the day, I've found that if I don't get the money to supply some of grad school, it's more worth it to find a job and work hard for a couple years, and then get like an MBA focused on healthcare, than push myself to get a degree now and then be in dire debt paying it all back with a meager salary. (I'm also applying to all health management programs if that puts my situation in better context.)
That makes a lot of sense for you- I think if I was interested in HPM I would go that route (work +MBA or MPH later on). With EPI however, there is literally nothing you can do before you have your MPH in EPI. So if I worked I would be doing something that I literally do not want to do. I'm just struggling a lot with concept of debt though!
A lot of students consider working in pharmaceutical companies or in the private sector right out of school to help with the cost of a graduate education even if they do not completely agree with their mission statements. Consulting jobs also pay well for practicums and post-school. Health departments might not pay as much, but the larger amounts of benefits are something to think about! So I am applying for MPHs in Epi, I am definitely interested in applied Epi (no real interest in a career in academia or further education at this time) and have always pictured myself working for the government in some capacity.
