MPH Fall 2017: Applied, Accepted, Waitlisted, Rejected!

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
So, I'm getting really frustrated with the Experiences section on SOPHAS mostly because it requires weekly hours and number of weeks. I have a job that I only work when I am on break from school, and I have a volunteer experience at the hospital which is all over the place and not consistent because I jump from department to department. Does anyone else have the same issues? How did you go about filling that part out then?

I had those issues too. Here's what I did:

I entered in the range of time I had been working somewhere. Say, if I had an internship two years in a row, but it was only for a few months, I'd enter in two years. Then for the weeks, I put in the actual time I spent at that internship. So say, eight weeks. Then I put in the number of hours each week. It's tough since they only let you do whole hours, so here and there, I would add a week or take away some hours, just to make sure that the total hours were as accurate as possible. I hope that helps.

Anyone know when Columbia sends out decisions? How soon after interviews?

Thank you!! How has your time been at Columbia thus far? Any other general tips for application?
This is a response to you and to anyone considering Columbia MPH: The administration at Columbia definitely over hypes the difficulty of the first semester and suggests that students should not work, but it's totally possible to work part-time if you want - I did it and so did many of my classmates. There are a lot of courses, but only about half of them require actual brain power. I think that if you do decide to attend Columbia for a MPH, know that you will encounter students and faculty who are extreme in their political beliefs and will make sure you know it lol. Some faculty members have made strange comments that prompted formal complaints from students, such as our Science, Evidence, and Public Policy professor claiming that pro-life people are the same as people in the Taliban. Although there are people like him, there are also a lot of faculty members who make themselves very available to their students and are genuinely interested in your success, personally and professionally. If you are open-minded and can associate with people who may think very differently than yourself, then Columbia is a great option. If you prefer to not be confronted with possibly emotionally charged debate every now and then, consider another school.
Additionally, I believe NYC offers unparalleled opportunities and being able to call yourself a Columbia MPH student really puts you ahead of other practicum/job applicants in the area.

As for application tips: keep in mind that the majority of Columbia MPH students have impressive professional backgrounds. Make your experience and character the theme of your application.

I hope this helps!

Note about GWU fin aid: last year, the deadline to notify schools of your decision to attend was April 15th. GWU sent out emails a week or two before that date to admitted students who had not yet received notification of scholarship offers saying that in order to find out if we would receive anything, we had to go ahead and reject other schools, say yes to GWU, and wait for the possibility of getting a scholarship. Although I was leaning toward Columbia anyway after visiting the campus, I was far less inclined to attend GWU after reading that email because it felt like they were hoping students would go ahead and accept their offer for the possibility of getting a scholarship. I was not a fan of that tactic. Not saying it will happen again this year, but don't be surprised if it does!

For anyone seriously considering GW, please weigh this into your decision to attend. This isn't cool and dishonest at best. I've sensed a trend from them, and I'm not surprised to hear this unfortunately.

Thank you for the insight. I think this information and my phone interview have made Columbia a school that I would really like to go to if I get accepted. I have some money in my college fund, but I really wanted to be able to work to start paying for what that won't cover. Do you know how likely it is for someone to get a paid internship for their practicum? I think I've also heard that students also tend to get more financial aid their second year, mostly from having time to apply to more external funding, could you confirm this?

Thanks

I'm glad you are considering Columbia! It is very possible to get a paid practicum experience. I am beginning my paid internship at the NYC Department of Health this spring and will continue there over the summer to complete my practicum. The pay differs a bit drastically between the public and private industries, though. Do not expect great pay from the NYC DOH, but if you are seeking an internship in pharma or consulting, the pay is much better. I am not that familiar with second year students' success with securing funding, but I do know from my own scholarship search that there are tons of funding options that require students to be in their second year of study to apply.

I've also heard from a friend who does not attend GWU that they require the practicum/fieldwork experience to be unpaid. Most other schools allow you to do your fieldwork at any place, paid or unpaid, so long as it fulfills their requirements. Take this info with a grain of salt since it is just hearsay from someone who doesn't attend the school and merely applied there. With the above info, I personally am not likely to consider GWU. However, I would encourage anyone who's concerned about this info to reach out to current students and see what the real story is.

Thinking about dropping a last minute application at BU. These merit packages look somewhat promising and some of their certificates really appeal to me.

The thing is, I'm having trouble differentiating between Program Management and Healthcare Management certificates.

Does anyone know about the differences between these?

Just wanted to clarify that it doesn't matter if the practicum is paid or unpaid; it's just really hard to get a paid one. I know two people from the previous graduating class who got paid during their practicum; one was an MPH Epi student at the DoH in Seattle and the other was an MSPH MEID student at some military research lab.

And yeah, I'm pretty shocked about the deceitfulness on scholarships. Never accept an offer unless you have all the information. If they refuse to give it to you, drop them; they're not worth your time.

I just received an end of year performance evaluation from my current job, (only been here 3 months) but I did really well (4.49/5) on a number of public health competencies and would like to include this in my apps last minute. Could this go under achievements even though its not really an honor or an award?

Yes. We don't need to be so rigid with these categories.

Accepted into Johns Hopkins' online/part-time MPH program for Summer 2017! I'm very excited and surprised (didn't really think I'd be accepted). Now I just have to figure out how to pay for it =\

FYI - I did not receive an email alerting me to an admissions offer or update in my app status. I only discovered it after logging into my applicant webpage and noticed a request to respond to the admissions offer.

Thoughts on a 1200 word personal statement? It's almost 2 pages single spaced. I'm worried that it's too long..

I think that if they didn't have a maximum and you're not including too much fluff, then it should be great! 🙂

Anybody else have trouble with their OPUS login information? I've obtained my network ID and password, and I've tried logging in a number of times, but it hasn't worked for me yet. I want to see if this has happened to anybody else before reaching out to the admissions email like they say to in the OPUS informational email.

So obviously my GRE is my weak point and DAMN is it weak. Any advice on where else I should consider applying? I'd like to move east coast because I'd like to pursue med school out there eventually. I come from a diverse background with strong ties to my tribe and reservation and talked a lot about how this influenced my interest in public health/how I want to help indigenous people in my statements.

Any advice is much appreciated, especially recommendations if you think I should apply elsewhere! I realize these are all kinda reaches because of my GRE.

When did you apply to BU? trying to figure out how long the wait will be for me.

I'm trying to figure out how long it takes to hear from BU after applying! Can you help?

Hi! BU received my application on 10/31, then sent an email that they would try to send a decision sometime in December, and then I was accepted on 12/15. Hope this helps!

🙂 Don't worry, stress gets the best of all of us some times.

How awesome! I haven't met too many pharmacy colleagues that go down the MPH route. I saw you got accepted to 3 of your choices already - congrats! Where do you plan on attending?

Leaning towards JHU, but torn because UNC is an awesome school as well, & they've been very friendly & responsive to emails.

Does anyone know if there is a place where I can find the employment rates for different programs, I really would like a list

I applied to Emory, its definitely one of my top choices, but I have an extremely low undergrad GPA but a higher grad GPA (in an unrelated field). Can I ask what your GPA was?

My undergrad GPA was a low 3.0 (I was a double major in Neuroscience and Psychology). I had special circumstances that I highly explained in my personal statement that revolve around family illnesses and working jobs to support.

I think if your profile makes up for that, you should be fine. The rest of my profile is in the What are my Chances Thread if you want more details.

I apologize I went MIA (first semester was hellaaaaa busy but I survived!)

I hope ya'll are doing well in your apps. I look forward to seeing some ya'll at Emory in the Fall of this year!

Said they received it 11/28, heard back 12/16. They sent me an email specifying that it would be some time in December. Should get a vague timeline of some sort. Best of luck!

Does anyone know how long BU takes to get back to you with the supplemental application? I just submitted my application last night and SOPHAS verified my transcript this morning. Thanks in advance!

I second that friendliness and responsiveness to emails from UNC (they answered my emails all throughout the holidays!). Certainly a difficult choice! Let me know what you decide to go with!

Just wrapped up my interviews with UPenn (Generalist) and Columbia (HPM).

My interviewer at Penn said I should expect to hear back in the next two weeks. Pray for me guys 🙂

Upenn requires an interview for Masters?

Hey y'all I got my merit award in the mail,
And wanted to know if BU usually send more $$$ later on in February or March? Just want to know if there's a chance to get more haha

Being in CA, I haven't had the chance to visit but it's great to hear that they're nice.

Here's hoping for a positive decision asap then 🙂

Yeah, I live in Florida! The reason why I visit so much is bc my boyfriend goes to Penn dental haha. Best of luck!
